    Did you know you can use a side plank to strengthen the muscles on the longer side of your curve?
    This is especially the case for people who have a C shape scoliosis.
    So how do you do it? The idea of a plank is to make gravity your friend and position yourself in a way that your muscles will automatically start to contract and help correct your curve. In this video I'm positioning myself as though the convex (longer) side of a C-Shape curve is down towards the ground. By C-shape I mean levoscoliosis or a curve that makes a similar shape to a letter C when looking at someone from behind. It is commonly accompanied by a thickening in the left lower back as well.
    The first thing to do is position yourself on your left side. Make sure your elbow is positioned under your shoulder. Depending on your strength you might want to start with you knees bent at 90 degrees so the two points of contact with the ground are your knees and your elbow. See if you can do that for 45 sec. If you can you should progress to doing the exercise with just your feet and elbows touching the ground. Make sure you do not sag in your hips and that your body is straight, ie. you butt isn't pushed back or forward.
    If you can hold that for a minute you can try and add some movement to the plank. I like to start with the pelvis and move it in all 3 planes (up and down, forward and back and rotation both ways.
    If you still want more of a challenge you can really take things to the next level by moving your arms and legs...but I don't recommend that until you have mastered the other levels.

    Thank you so much! I am 69 and been lifting weights for 47 years. Had some pain and soreness a couple of years ago in mid back, had soreness for a few days after doing some twisting movements so I went to doc and he took xrays and showed me a degenerative disc in my Thorasic region. Now only time i get pain or soreness is if i do something like arching back real far or twisting too far. I guess the disc presses on a nerve or compresses a nerve. I know what to avoid now. Also the xrays showed scoliosis which isnt bad and the convex is to the right. These exercises are just what i was looking for.

    There is a article to say that a for a convection to the right, you plank on the right but there is another brainstorming articles that says that’s wrong because muscle pulls, not push so you should plank on the opposite side of where your C is curved towards. What is your thought? Same side or opposite and why?

    • @EdPaget
      @EdPaget  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      wilson ganks you can do it both ways. One lengthens the short side of the curve with gravity, the other strengthens the muscles in the long side. Which one you use depends on your goal and how you integrate it into the other scoliosis exercises you do. This is not an exercise to be done in isolation.

      Grzegorz Brzęczyszczykiewicz This is just one exercise that should be used in conjunction with a whole program of exercises designed to increase mobility strength and endurance. You shouldn’t just be focussing on one exercise. If you want to do it properly, I have an online program that has seven steps to help you conquer and control your scoliosis. But picking one or two exercises off TH-cam and hoping for results isn’t The best way to go about it. Go to edpaget.com for more details.

    I thought you should do the side plank on your concave side since the muscles on the convex side are lengthened but are over working? The muscles on the concave side are shortened but are weaker. Could you please confirm this? Thanks.

    • @EdPaget
      @EdPaget  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Philip N the muscles on the concave side are shortened so need to be stretched. The muscles in the convex side a stretched and need to be shortened. One way of doing this is with 3D body weight movements, like the plank. Remember it’s just one quick example of how to get a different stimulus into those muscles.

    This is always confusing to me. My xray report says "convex to the right". So my curve looks like a backwards letter "C" towards the right on the lumbar. I've been told to "plank" more on the right side. Note quite like your drawing, as it's somewhat straight mid-back, and then it does its thang. Thanks.

    • @EdPaget
      @EdPaget  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The diagram I have drawn on the white board is looking at someone from the front. So from the front it would be called a reverse c shape scoliosis (which can be seen in the diagram) From the back it would be called a C-shape or levo scoliosis. When you look at your x-rays make sure you orientate them so you know if you are looking at your front or back. Where the actual curve appears in your spine (lumber or thoracic) doesn't matter so much for this exercise as long a the convexity is facing downward.
