Unfortunately, most of the “cheap” cars are now super high mileage late 2000s crap that has been completely run into the ground that quite honestly needs to be sent to the junkyard. It’s a combination of cash for clunkers, the microchip shortage, and social media influencer hype which has created the perfect storm that has priced everyone out.

Just picked up 2 honda CRX gen 2's an 88 and a 90 this year both at $1,300 both over 200,000 miles, yes both needed work but both were able to drive and move. These babies get insane gas mileage, and are still zippy and fun to drive. Planning on VTEC-ing one soon so it'll be more fun and just as fuel efficient when I want to just drive somewhere normal. In fact I've been using the 90 as my daily for the past half year now, dumped probably another 2k into parts for upgrades and repairs, but this has been my dream car since the early 2000's. Yeah, I am a millennial but most of us don't have a ton of cash lol which is why I was glad my dream car also made practical sense to buy, calculated my gas savings switching from my old car and in the first 3 months I saved $850 so the car is paying for itself. I was driving an 02 BMW 530i cause, second hand it was cheap, found out the hard way though to fix and drive they are EXPENSIVE. I drive for work so I drive a lot.

This honestly does make me really sad for anyone wanting to get into JDM. I got lucky by getting in just before the boom, bought my Type X 180 for $15k (aud) back in 2017 and got a friend who's wanting one too but you just can't find one for less than like $40k now. Even EG and Ek civics that need some work are going for like $8k - $12k here in Australia, it's just ridiculous.

So, I've heard this from many people in finance, marketing, people my age. I used to work at the track so I can confirm how rare some of these fucking cars are (keep your Miatas, some guy will just scoop up any salvage one to run it for SM class anyway).
The Millenials grew up with a lot of these iconic cars and now that they're at an age where they're finally making money, they're buying the cars of their childhood dreams. On top of manufactures (I worked in manufacturing/automotive/technology for 5 years as well) not building cheap, fun, and "tunable" cars; these classics are getting scooped up.
Personally I own my dream car (fell in love the first time I saw it in 1999). I have a 2005 Honda S2000 and to be honest, I'd want to own 2 more (3 in total) or scoop up an NA Miata or an S13. I've daily driven it and I track it. I drive the hell out of my car so I've put miles on it through road trips, commuting, touge runs late at night in the hills, etc.
I've noticed there aren't very many cars that seem "fun" to drive anymore that aren't over 15k. Manufacturers have found the meta or formula for making the most money and so because of that they don't want to innovate. Innovating involves risk, possibly losing out on profit and with supply issues these days ranging anywhere from rubber to computer chips these; "fun" cars are expensive as shit.
The new Nissan Z is expected to be 40k compare that to when the 350z came out which was around 26k.
The new Corolla GR will be 32k+ (I really want one) compared to the 1998 Celica All-Trac Turbo original MSRP at $20,298
A new Hyundai Veloster N is around 32k and the soon to come 2023 Hyundai RM20 N price is up in the air (could be as much as 70k depending on how South Korea wants to price it).
Here's a list of the cheapest cars you can buy from cars.com:
    1. 2021 Chevrolet Spark LS: $15,695
    2. 2021 Mitsubishi Mirage ES: $16,590
    3. 2021 Kia Rio LX: $17,045
    4. 2021 Hyundai Accent SE: $17,500
    5. 2021 Mitsubishi Mirage G4 ES: $17,590
    6. 2021 Nissan Versa S: $17,600
    7. 2021 Kia Forte FE: $19,785
    8. 2021 Nissan Sentra S: $20,410
    9. 2021 Hyundia Elantra SE: $20,655
    10. 2021 Hyundai Veloster 2.0: $20,905
Another reason why the older classic cars are popular is simply because they're easier to self-maintain. Most cars these days require you to flash the computer since many of them have modules all over the call. I remember when I worked at Dodge back in the day they came out with "lifetime transmission fluid" and the transmission "wasn't serviceable" even though it had fill holes from the factory; each quart of the fluid was $70 iirc. There are countless other cars that just become increasingly hard to find each year. Like other than the one I've seen around town, I don't remember the last time I've seen a different Foxbody Mustang...other than that one I mentioned. I NEVER see them. That and BB5 (97-02) Honda Preludes; I've only see one and it's the same guy.
Old adage applies here, "They don't build em like they used to". To all the guys and gals looking for their dream cars that just happened to be within this golden era of cars. Good Luck, don't give up. It took me 15 years to buy and own my S2000 (both of my cars are fully paid off) and trust me I had people telling me back in the day I'd never own one.
So whatever it is your looking for, don't settle.
"If you don't look back at your car after you park it, you've bought the wrong car."

All these 90's JDM legends are now to an age where they are either too rusty and sold for parts, OR the owner bites the bullet and completely restores the car makes it rust free. Basically the clunkers can't pass inspection anymore, and the clean ones are getting more rare and have a TON of rust repair to them so obviously they are much more expensive cause the investment is much, much higher.

Still gunning for a fc as my first car, specifically just one that runs, has a rotary still because that's what it for, is an s4 because I think those look prettier, and isn't a rust bucket, otherwise it's probably going to get the bosuzoku treatment anyway so why ruin a clean one.

I live in Finland and in 2018 I bought a z32 tt manual for 7500 euros. Today prices start at like 15-16k, even if they are automatics. Makes me sad but also happy at the same time, because for once I actually bought something at the right time.

Was lucky enough to buy a pristine 91 MR2 NA 5 speed for 4400. Got a 96 300zx manual for 9000 and a 2000 S2000 for 11k. All in the last year. Prices are going up for sure! Love these old cars
