    Loved your nuanced discussion on privilege, Jarvis' story about going to his therapist and downplaying a struggle because he wants to acknowledge his privileges really hit me as someone who has done the EXACT same thing.
    I think it's very easy to end up beating yourself up for having a tough time when you're in a relatively comfortable position, which a) doesn't help you, and b) doesn't help anyone else. Feeling guilty for your privilege isn't the purpose of acknowledging your privilege, the goal should be learning your blindspots so you can stand in solidarity with others.

    • @whatcolorjunebug
      @whatcolorjunebug 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +30

      Yes, and feeling guilty about your privileges is exactly what leads so many people to downplay or deny them! There’s no shame in having enough, because everyone should have enough. And there’s no special nobility in suffering, despite what the 1% would like us to believe. It’s always good to reduce suffering in the world, whether it’s your own or others’. Plus, if we have more than just enough then we have the delightful privilege of being able to give to others more easily!

      If someone is drowning in the ocean, and someone is drowning in a puddle, they’re still both drowning and need help.
      I’m a very privileged person in various ways and it’s easy to dismiss my own struggles when I compare my situation to others, but I’ve been struggling with depression and anxiety regardless of whether I’ve technically got things better than many others do. Dismissing my own struggles doesn’t help others in any way.

    💍 Jewelry Maker here! 💍
    Just to shed some insight about stone cutting.. it requires proper wet saws, grinding/polishing wheels, and proper ventilation. It is also a complete separate set of skills and craft than jewelry making. It takes some people decades to master just one of those skillsets! Yes, some people overlap in both fields, but many people don't have the space, equipment, or time (and money) to do both.
    I hope that helps shed some light on the jeweler situation!

    On a really serious note, I saw this very wonderful interview on tik tok with a survivor of the bombing of Japan. She described losing almost everyone around her as a very young girl and just unimaginable horrors, she said she will never forget the smell of burning flesh. Having that on my mind the stuff that girl said from g4 was so disturbing and just...inhumane idk. Sometimes I forget that not everyone has like a basic respect for others its really disheartening...

      My grandparents were from hiroshima and nagasaki. One of my grandmothers earliest memories was being taken by her mother around town with a bucket to try and find any parts or remnants of her father to bury, because his commute was in the hit zone. In the end, they buried nothing.
      Maybe i should stop being surprised, but it still amazes me that people are comfortable making such "jokes". It was barely even a joke, just a random insulting comment played for laughs. But the amount of times people will use it as some kind of "gotcha" or comeback or "joke" against Japan is crazy. Celebrating or making light of others' losses and suffering is nothing short of inhumane.

    • @genericname8727

      It’s so abstracted from the presenter’s own experience, just something from the tv or wherever, that she probably doesn’t even process it like she’s joking about a real thing, especially since she’s just reading a script someone wrote for her, and the writer is just writing something for someone else to read. It’s all too abstracted in their minds. It is inhumane because the writer and the presenter probably didn’t even think about them as real people rather than as abstracted ideas. I think the way the internet has connected us, so that you can hear directly from survivors recounting their stories and you can potentially interact with those people through the internet too as if meeting them “in the real world”, has helped many to develop more empathy. Yet at the same time consuming media over the internet can still also be used to make people’s experiences and pain feel more like abstracted concepts, easy to dismiss on some level as not feeling “real”. It’s sad how cruel people can still be but at least there’s been progress.

    One thing a lot of people should take away from this regarding jewelry is that its value is 100 percent arbitrary beyond the scrap value of it. If you pay 2500 for a ring, decent odds its made with like 300 worth of gold and a 50 dollar diamond. You're paying for the ability to say you paid that much for someone, basically. Anyone trying to sell jewelry will be familiar with this. (This excludes verifiable, unique antiques but that isnt most jewelry even if it is very old)

    • @whatcolorjunebug

      Is there no value given for the quality of the craftsmanship? Like if they’re going to resell something rather than scrap it?

    • @iamjustkiwi
      @iamjustkiwi 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +18

      @@whatcolorjunebug it's extremely hard to resell jewelry because tastes vary a lot and styles change rapidly. A custom piece especially will have no resale value as is because it will most likely just sit in a display spot unsold forever whereas there is always a hungry market for gold bullion. Thankfully(?) this does mean gold is infinitely recyclable so it never goes to waste and just changes forms over and over, but it definitely hurts unaware people when they are desperate, bring in a family heirloom they were told was purchased for thousands only to be offered nothing beyond its scrap value.
      There might be exceptions for some niche stuff like vintage Tiffany that has a verified history but it's not common.

    • @StormSought
      @StormSought 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +7

      The expertise that goes into designing it also does have value, even if it might not be resale value. It's not most of the price discrepancy, but it's there, even if many people don't think it's that important. See, businesses who don't hire graphic or interior designers, for example. Design only stands out to the eye when it's bad, but it's always there.

    1:53:58 one thing I like about how my mom brought me up: every time we saw an emergency vehicle while driving or heard sirens at home, we’d pause what we were doing and pray for whoever those vehicles were going to help. Pray for their safety, their peace, their families, etc. it was a short 10-20 second thing. I’m not religious anymore but I think it’s important to pause when we hear sirens and really take in the knowledge that those sounds mean people around us are having their lives torn apart by something…
    The couple’s flippant attitude surrounding the devastation in Hawaii reminded me of that

How much more financially and socially privileged do you need to be to stand up against Big Jewelry?

Think a Japanese 'Illiad', a fictional story about an epic war and the religion and philosophy surrounding it. Like the Illiad it's based on an actual historical war, but the work of literature overshadows actual history.

    Okay to be clear, whatever youre imagining that Maui house costing to rent, its more. Housing is inflated like crazy for places in Hawaii bc of all the rich white people. Its great her mom is helping people in Lahaina, IF she is. This woman already lies/obscures all the info she can. Like is her mom still doing red cross there? Or is that just how they started to move. Additionally, they still have the money to rent that shit... you dont get that money volunteering for the red cross. Theyre still fucking loaded, at least familial wealth wise

    • @blood-soup
      @blood-soup 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +15

      THIS!! You’re so right, thank you!!! Her story about the house on Maui was so suspicious to me. Any American around her age online today should have *at least once* heard SOMETHING about Hawai’i, about how the people of Hawai’i don’t want tourists coming, about how tourism fucking destroys places like that, and about the disgusting land theft and development done by non-natives (Oprah Winfrey, Mark Zuckerberg, the fucking military) that is destroying the environment and driving Hawaiians out of their homes and often into homelessness due to skyrocketing prices and just too many fkn people buying ~vacation homes~ n moving there bc “it’s so magicallll”.
      The LOUD public outcry of Hawaiians pleading for people to not travel there after the fires in & around Lahaina, Maui (and in general) was, in my opinion, unavoidable if you read a single thing on social media about it.
      If she hasn’t learned a thing about any of that, then her hippie, align-my-chakras, fun-loving, ooo peace and magic and spiritual connection to the Kingdom of Hawai’i where I’ve been told not to go -persona is exclusively an aesthetics and vibes-based personality. Absolutely no self awareness of her privilege and her notable, undeniable wealth and security in life. There’s no way your chakras can stay aligned when you’re that out of touch with the world and your impact on it.
      Yucky. I have a yucky feeling about it all.

Hawaiian is a classified as a critically endangered language due to forced assimilation, with only 2000 native speakers left (for context, only .1% of those living in Hawaii in 2001 could speak Hawaiian). And her mom, a white person, supposedly fluently speaks Hawaiian? If her mom grew up on the island or had lived there for years, she would’ve said that, not led with the whole renting/Red Cross thing. All very suspicious to me, definitely feels like a deflection of guilt

So regardless of what kind of insurance they did or didn’t have, they were going to pay the customer for the loss. The couple just refused to accept the amount it was worth because they believed it should be worth much more due to the gem coming from the $10,000 shaman experience and the sentimental value of the heirloom.

    I'm Japanese and I have a bad news about Chiitan. The talent agency that Chiitan belongs to, Kleeblatt inc., is known for producing an idol group named Kamen Joshi. The members were treated very poorly by the company: extremely low wages that forced the members to sleep in an office, and outing one of the member's sexuality and making jokes about it.
    I don't blame anyone for supporting Chiitan since this is probably a lesser known fact, but just wanted to let people be aware. Especially since Chiitan recently gained popularity for being a trans ally, I honestly don't know how genuine that is, considering the company's history.

    re the g4 stuff - iirc, for whatever reason in the ps3 era, games journalism was weirdly anti japanese games and they’d go out of their way to talk shit on it. meanwhile some really fucking solid japanese games came out around that time so jokes on them i guess

      Yeah actually I've heard Japanese game devs talk about this racism- like the use of "jrpgs" being used to shit talk them and make them seem inherently foreign and different to American rpgs... which are never referred to as arpgs

    9:49 “this is like if Oscar hosted the academy awards”
    Jordan once again saying something that had me laughing crying on the floor, going completely unoticed, is utter comedic bliss, and one of the many reasons i keep falling in love with the show more and more each episode 😭

    "I'm riding a tardigrade to the show!" Another incredible Jordan quip that goes unoticed cause he's so fast 😂

    I'm just waiting for the sequel where the engagement ring couple come back with a story-time about their baby who was somehow swapped at birth. They have a gut feeling and know, so they go to another (free!!) shaman to help find their baby - who tells them that with the power of a magical amulet (sold for the low-low price of $50,000), the internet will have the answer they seek. They finally find their child in a TikTok stitch and they instantly recognize them because they have the harshest, blondest center part you've ever seen 👱

    Refreshed TH-cam to see where I left off in the podcast playlist and saw this was uploaded a minute ago! Love your content and the message y'all spread. Thanks for all you do!
    Edit: So funny that MGS got brought up because I just started a new playthrough this week. Speaking on the amount of cutscenes, the opening prologue in the hospital is 45 minutes long if you do not skip cutscenes. I planned to skip through all of them but if I started to watch them, they would just pull me in and I'd forget to skip. I think that the cutscenes can bog down the gameplay but they are also so damn good.

    After seeing what her fiance is like I understand why it cost $10k to cleanse one of his chakras. I don't know anything about chakras but I think he's got at least another $100k of work to do. The shamans better stock up on gems

    Nevet watched your guy's podcast before and just wanna say I really like the 'how's it going' segment. Just you two being vunerable is such a nice thing to see in a way. I relate to some of the things you said and it makes me feel a little less alone in it

    I'm from Brazil, and Elon is a child who thinks the world is his backyard and have to follow his rules. It isn't and he lost way more than we did. You guys should see the real reason X was banned in Brazil!

    'How's it going' segment resonated with me, esp around 18 min. I had to work from home during covid, but it was a monotonous, miserable over the phone sales job. I had a hard time staying motivated because of all my comfort items, games, etc. were so close by, but I also struggled to completely relax because I could always see work waiting in the other room. Not being able to separate work and play, or leisure and focus, really destroyed my mental health for a while. I had to take work somewhere else before I could feel truly rested again, and really focus on the tasks at hand when clocked in.

      That's why I cannot fathom living in an apartment with my house on top and the shop I work at downstairs. Like those barhouses with some random guy upstairs.
