Hi Charlee.. Thank you so much for posting this. I just purchased an Elite Desk 400 G4 with the I-5 8500T processor. The USB-C port didn't come as standard equipment on this model (at least not on the front of the box). Adding the USB-C attachment to the rear (like you did) makes the Elite Desk much more functional and opens up many possibilities. Thanks again my friend. Hope you got your computer working the way you want it now that you've added the ne part. Great job on this video.

Back in the 1990's I was a computer support and specialist and network technician I was in the loop for all the newest advances and had access to most of the up-to-date hardware. After I got sick and ended up disabled I started losing touch with the different options available for computers and printers.until this video I wasn't aware that I could swap the vga port to usb c. I am familiar the display port as I recently purchased a bunch of hp elitedesk mini units with the display port instead of VGA. I know that several of these were sold to employees as well. The asking price originally was $150 but eventually sold for $100. No monitors just the elitedesk 800 g4 dm unit with power cord. Now that I am aware of being able to install a usb c port I will be able to help the ones that purchased the same units as I purchased. I can give them the option of installing a vga port or a usb c port. Where I live you don't get to see the changes that are evolving in the world of IT.

I like the precision of both this video and the other one you did on the G2. Very helpful! The number of variants of these HP mini PCs is extremely confusing. I think the IO module on the G3 -- the model I'm interested in buying -- can be swapped in the same way as the G4's (e.g. VGA or nothing --> HDMI). Correct? Unrelated to this: I notice that you have TWO M.2 slots for memory plus a dedicated WiFi slot. As far as I understand, most (but maybe not all) G3 models have only ONE M.2 slot and one WiFi slot (which runs in the same direction, parallel to the the memory slot). The same is true of the older G2. However, one video I saw suggested that some (newer?) G3 models have a similar configuration as the G4 (2 x M.2, plus WiFi). If you're familiar with the G3, can you comment on this? I suppose if one buys from Amazon, it's going to be hit or miss (i.e. impossible to know in advance).

    • @charleeeugene
      @charleeeugene  ปีที่แล้ว

Thanks for watching!!! I have only worked on the G2 and G4 I would assume the G3 is similar to the G4. But like you said there’s so many different variants only thing you can do is ask the seller what’s under the hood spec wise. Tell him to take photo since it’s super easy to take off the cover. But your right it’s kind of hit or miss. My advice get a good deal on one!!!!

EliteDesk 800 G1 and G2 USFF have one M.2 SATA slot, plus one M.2 WiFi
EliteDesk 800 G3 USFF have ONE M.2 NVMe slot, plus one M.2 WiFi slot.
EliteDesk 800 G4 USFF have TWO M.2 NVMe slots, plus one M.2 WiFi slot.
All EliteDesk have the Option Board slot… DS9 I/O, VGA, DP, HDMI USB-C…
G1 G2 G3 G4 G5 G6 and TWR MT SFF USFF have different form-factors, be aware of the one you need.
“Generation” did not overlap. There were no ‘early’ or ‘late’ versions.
Be aware that the cover may be wrong (as in this video, Elite vice Pro)
      G1 G2 G3 have only one M.2 SSD
I have no experience with Pro Desk models, only EliteDesk.
But in general, ProDesk were simpler ‘Buisiness’ machines, with fewer connections, ports, etc. ‘Cheap’ was the word.
      Oops, forgot to add:
EliteDesk USFF came in 35Watt and 65Watt versions. This dictated what type of CPU could be used.
65Watt models had beefed up V+ rails, coolers and fans. Also needed 95watt PSU’s.

go with Intel Core i7 8th Gen 8700T or lower generation make sure the T is at the end. Some people say that got regular CPU's to work without it. But they had to get a higher wattage power supply. I'd play it safe so you don't have to waste time and money. the T series Chips are lower powered and lower performance.

Another unrelated question: I'm really keen on buying one of these but I've just finished watching a video about the latest HP offering (see: HP Elite Mini 800 G9 Review - Project TinyMiniMicro). It mentions the huge problem of being locked out when trying to change hardware on a second-hand unit, for lack of the original HP BIOS password. Evidently, this problem could be overcome up to HP generation G4 by fiddling with a jumper on the motherboard to reset/wipe the BIOS. (No longer possible in subsequent generations for "security reasons".) Did you hear of this? Even if you didn't come across this problem, do you know where the jumpers are on your G4 motherboard? On the G3, they are right beside the same IO board that you swapped out, but I don't see them clearly in your video (G4 having a different motherboard).

@@xntricity6446 Thunderbolt and USB-C cables and ports are not the same, but they look almost identical and perform nearly the same functions. On most devices, the cables and ports are compatible so you can connect either cable to either port. But Thunderbolt connectors transfer data much faster than USB-C. If you’re connecting a USB-C cable to a Thunderbolt port or a Thunderbolt cable to a USB-C port, speed will default to the less powerful standard of USB-C.
Both Thunderbolt and USB-C have the same 24-pin connector too, so the only way to visually tell the difference between Thunderbolt and USB-C is by identifying the trademark lightning symbol near the port or cable connector.
Finally, a Thunderbolt port is more expensive, because it must have a Thunderbolt controller chip and certification from Intel.

Did you make sure it attached to the motherboard correctly? Also you don't have to do anything in the bios It should recognize once connected. Try another HDMI Module they are cheap and lastly I would try a more powerful Power adapter to push video to the monitor.
