Anyone else ever find it hilarious how Arnie uses a random dude as a shield, dude was minding his own business and could've been on his way to proposing to his lady, a child's birthday party, a very important job interview, a doctors appointment, buying some beer to relax, anything and his day ends being a human shield to soak up bullets for Arnie lol good times 😂
It isn't a Nineties action movie if some random guy doesn't receive a ridiculous amount of bullets and keeps wincing for every single hit until the bad guys are dead.
I don't know what's better, the squishing sound as he steps on the dead guy, or the window that he just jumped though getting shot out and falling on him again.
The best thing about '80s and '90s Action and Paul Verhoeven movies were the bombastic movie scores, reckless use of automatic machine guns and pistols and plenty of gun muzzle flash!
Imagine being that guy on the escalator, just minding his business, on the way home from a crappy day at work. And then suddenly an Austrian bodybuilder comes out of nowhere and uses you as a meat shield. RIP
I can't help but think of Sam Fisher from SpliterCell every time Michael Ironside talks. Criminally underrated actor with such a cool voice - he's awesome!
This scene almost had an X rating because of the violence. Paul Verhoeven had a similar problem in Robocop where Peter Weller's character Murphy shot multiple times including a close-up of wound to the head.
In one of the "behind the scenes" segment, Verhoeven said that the producer literally begged him "Stop the bleeding! Stop the bleeding!" on the set of Robocop lol
i love how in both Robocop and Total Recall (both Paul Verhoeven films).... he had to put in an over the top shotfest of a no-name dude getting shot to death. Most notably.... that dude in the meeting who got shot by Ed 209 from Robocop, and the escalator guy in total Recall. lol. Murphy also took hundreds of bullets before he became Robocop.
Tell me if you were in the same circumstance that you would you the body of a dead man as shield against high-powered bullets. He was already dead - a victim of bullets meant for the guy next to him. A term that comes to mind was a later Arnold Schwarzenegger movie.
@@tenhirankei I know this comment is a year old, but just for the sake of anyone else who stumbles on it.. A, there’s no way that guy’s skinny body would have stopped those bullets. They would have easily entered and exited him and hit Arnold, especially since it’s from an auto firing weapon at close range. B, the real issue is more from a film perspective in that Arnold is supposed to be the hero and heroes don’t use innocent bystanders as human shields..even if they’re already dead. (Unless it’s a war movie and they’re on the front line) that’s why I point to this scene as something you’ll never see again. Especially with the rise of super hero films. Heroes, even reluctant heroes or anti-heroes, don’t use innocent people as human shields.
They should’ve cast the executive who got shot up in Robocop to play the guy who got shot up here. And at the end of scene, have someone yell to call for a paramedic.
Probably because practical effects were the best effects, blanks, squibs, real explosions, real car wrecks, etc, so most movies ended up being violent. Now that CGI can create kid friendly fairy tales all we get is dumb Avengers garbage since the real money is in that 8-16 crowd.
@@starwarsrebel2006 CGI has been in movies for MANY decades. The first feature film using CGI was Westworld in 1973. Obviously, the quality was poor back then.
that's all he ever was! he had great aspirations to go to Mars and start a new life. little did he know the fates needed him to be a human meat shield in order for Schwarzenegger to survive the movie.
Interesting that this video was in my recommended list after all these years, as I just saw Michael Ironside in a small role in "Nobody" last week. (It was sad to see what he looks like now.)
1:31 I can't imagine why someone like Lori would fall for someone like Ricktor. In real life as we saw in the beginning of this movie Lori is Quaid's wife. Lori turning on Quaid was part of Quaid's fantasy.
She was an agent working for Cohagen. When he wakes up at the beginning of the movie that’s his first day as Douglas Quaid. Nothing was ever implanted at Rekall. Cohagens countdown to destruction started the moment he turned Hauser into Doug. His plan backfired BIG TIME!
I like it.. so the Subway was in Mexico City? Sweet! It's a pretty cool subway. I like how the tracker thing is like a Garmin Navigator thing today. Pretty wild! Arnold's gun was a Claridge Hi Tec, pretty neat little pistol!
Yay, Insurgentes subway station from Mexico City in the takes outside, while some takes inside the chase are in Observatorio station. Ahhh those days in mexico City! Looking itneresting in a dystopian style. :)
Rest in peace, Meat-shield.
Mars was saved because of your heroic sacrifice!

ahh the classic human shield I love it!
He'd already been killed when Quaid grabbed him to use as a shield.
To be fair, it does seem like he tried to push the guy aside, he got shot and then he grabs him to use as a human shield.
It isn't a Nineties action movie if some random guy doesn't receive a ridiculous amount of bullets and keeps wincing for every single hit until the bad guys are dead.
Arnold started using him as a shield only after the guy got shot
Arnold's 80's to 90's to early 2000's movies are all Legendary
Almost as good as van Damme
Arnold jumping out of X-Ray machine was so EPIC.
Scrolling the comments and I read yours as it was occurring
"Clever girl"
*instantly reminded of jurassic park*
Luke R Jurassic Park should actually remind you of “Total Recall “ considering that it came before the latter .👍
@@jamesroboyle JP way better movie
Me too.
R.I.P. , The Meat shield from the escalator.
Time to wake up and watch Mary Poppins.
That scream of frustration at the end 😂😂😂
Even though I admit the scene was hilarious, I always felt really, really bad for that innocent meat-shield bystander.

the 80`s
@@paulorufalco You mean the 90's? was probably made in 89'
You can imagine in a remake they'd have to do an extensive backstory for the meat-shield.
Hey it's not arny's fault that guy has the worst response time ever
jerry goldsmith's score kicks ass in this scene, its so exciting on the CD soundtrack as well (track is called 'clever girl')

well this was the 80s and 90s
A lot of unnecessary shoving, that is for sure. =P

Can't believe there was only one innocent bystander in all of THAT.
At least the guy who suffered the ultimate insult of being stepped upon after he’s dead is not Meat Shield…..

Yeah I love the MEAT SHIELD!! Arnold's like "Hmm..this guy next to me is already getting fucked up so I might as well use him as duh meat shield!"
The sound of that window breaking is one of the coolest sound effects...ever!
if I could isolate that....well it'd be a shweet cell phone alert..
I can
3:58 when you're pissed that you're late for work and just missed that damn train! LOL
All you had to do was follow the damn train CJ!

Mexico City's subway system so modern to it's time, it was used as a futuristic subway setting for this movie XD.

The squibs Verhoven chose for his films made the violence seem more brutal than other movies. People seem to get torn apart in his movies.
