My family has a summer place on a small lake in NH and one very warm summer evening, I couldn’t sleep, so I put Clair de lune (Reader’s Digest Magical World of Melody 1964) on the stereo and went down to sit on our dock and paddle my feet. It was about 1:00 am and I had it just loud enough for me to hear it. As I sat there, the moon, which was only intermittently peaking through clouds, began to emerge completely and I was witness to something magical: I was seeing before me exactly what the music was depicting. My eyes reared up and my heart filled like it would burst. I had the uncanny feeling that Debussy had seen the same sight one evening and had been inspired to write Clair de lune. That happened more than 45 years ago but the memory is still vivid and cherished.
He's got different dynamic variation going at the same time on each hand. It really is amazing. He lets the notes resonate too and doesn't rush. He's truly mastered the piano.
Many many times lost in this magic. Claude Debussy, Seong-Jin Cho, worlds apart, life times apart yet together as one, time and space do not matter at all. Their music travels deeply in the heart of those that have the pleasure to hear it, a kind relief from every day news of war, killings, world burning and so on.
This version means so much to me, on a personal level. It is played like he wants to enjoy every note/passage of it. It's almost like, through this piece of music, he is telling someone very close to him, how much they mean to him, and he wants them to fully 'get' the depth of his feelings for that someone.
I have heard Clair de Lune a thousand times played by a hundred musicians. I have never felt it like this. This is exquisite. A masterpiece in the hands of a master.
Cho Seong-jin is one of the pianists who understands Debussy best. His dreamlike performance is so beautiful. His playing makes me feel as if I were walking on the water.
Cho is a superstar in Korea and has studied in France where he fell in love with Debussy. What does the winner of the Chopin Competition evoke with his Clair de Lune?
I am not sure if Cho would like to be called a superstar. If you can have all those beautiful comments posted back here, then you already have your question answered in a thousand different ways. Why did they all disappear? Hmm.
I’ve listened to this popular piece so many times all my life, but never before heard it played like this. There’s a clarity in Jin Cho’s interpretation that sings out. I’m hearing notes I’ve never before realised were there. The melody is raised to another level. It’s gentle, quietly relax poised and very beautiful - thanks Jin Cho for sharing.
Hands down the best rendition of Claire de lune among the younger generation of pianists. None of the others possess the same degree of finesse, touch, artistry and above all, musical understanding of Cho.
So fully graceful, so full of elegance! His hands are, as others have noted, also a part of his playing, so melodic a ballet they seem to be! He is a master.

I can't put into words just how beautiful and gentle this performance is. There is such fragility in the way he touches the keys like fine crystals are floating in the breeze on a warm summer night. I don't know if anyone can imagine the visions that came over me as I listened to his version of Claire de Lune. I rarely ever leave comments but with this one I just had to.
