I've no idea how St. Louis fans felt. They had a fit in Baltimore and very angry in Cleveland. I just always felt that by yanking tradition away from a town, with it's identity strongly rooted in that sports team, the NFL made it's product appear disposable and cheap. They can't be anything else but the St. Louis Cardinals, now misplaced as an Arizona team. They will always be the Baltimore Colts, too, IMHO. Then you have free agency, which I support from a worker's standpoint, but it takes team allegience and tradition out of the pro game. Players today don't necessarily have a great identification with the city they are currently playing in because they could be playing elsewhere next year. This type of stuff doesn't help the league.

Agree 100%. It certainly hurt the league.

@@w41duvernay In all fairness, Bob Irsay had to do it. The state of Maryland was threatening to steal his team by eminent domain.

      Hi Tommy,
When the Cardinals left after the 1987 season, St. Louis wasn’t as angry as either Baltimore losing the Colts or Cleveland losing the original Browns. Owner Bill Bidwill allowed the team to deteriorate and kept whining for a new stadium, and fans just got tired of the drama. Plus the baseball Cardinals were perennial winners and the hockey Blues were always competitive.
It was a different story when the Rams went back to LA. I don’t blame Stan Kroenke and the NFL wanting a franchise in LA - it’s the 2nd largest U.S. metro area - I get it. But it was the falsehoods and outright lies that Kroenke, Roger Goodell, and Jerry Jones spewed to trash St. Louis and claim the fans weren’t worthy of a team. So, STL was far angrier when the Rams left.
The NFL settled out of court, awarding about $900 million to St. Louis, St. Louis County, and the Convention Center (I’m not sure of their official name) in the aftermath, so obviously, there was a strong case that the NFL was guilty of malfeasance.

@@geminijamie1 If Bill Bidwell actually built a competitive team, maybe people would watch it! The only city in all of sports that has a great team...but ZERO fan-support...is St. Petersburg. The Rays are a great baseball team, but nobody cares. The Cardinals never even tried to be competitive. They had NO home playoff games at Busch Stadium! Even the Patriots had one during that time (1978). For that matter, there had been times when the Patriots drew less than 30,000 to watch a lousy team at a lousy stadium; but, when they had a good team, people came to see it. Imagine that! Bill Bidwell was an idiot who never got the concept.

As an Arizona Cardinals fan, I feel conflicted because I agree that the Bidwells are dirty and they really screwed St. Louis over. But we love the Cardinals so much here, I wish you could come here and see just how important the team is to the entire state of Arizona, for better or for worse (because with the Cards, it's always worse). I empathize with what you feel, but I hope you see the one positive in their move, that being the team became ingrained in an entire state's culture.

Fact that can stump most trivia experts: The Cardinals are the oldest continuously operating professional football team. Yes, older than the Bears, Packers, Giants, and Steelers!
They started as the Racine Street Cardinals in Chicago then renamed the Chicago Cardinals. (Yes, Chicago had 2 NFL teams from 1920-1959!). The Cardinals moved to St. Louis in 1960, then moved to Phoenix in 1988.
