The Astrodome will at least at this point never be torn down. The Texas Historical Commission in 2017 voted unanimously to make it an official landmark which means it cannot be torn down or altered without approval from the commission.

They can’t demolish it because it’s huge and could cost money especially because of the NRG stadium being way too close to it. It’s impossible to implode those huge stadiums at this point. Even domed ones

    • @ChicosMonkeyFarm
      @ChicosMonkeyFarm 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

@@spacemansports4129 That has nothing to do with it. They easily could have it taken down in ways without implosion, that's how old Giants stadium was taken down as Metlife was being built next to it. As long as the commission approves the actions taken to the Astrodome, anything can happen to it.

The Astrodome originally used a specific type of Bermuda grass for indoor purposes, but what happened is that the roof created a kaleidoscopic glare which made tracking fly balls difficult, so they painted the panels to make easier (@ 4:25 in the video). But when that happened the grass died out, so they then installed Astro Turf.

The reason the Metrodome and Kingdom were torn down so quickly was to make room for new stadiums. Also as previously mentioned, the astrodome is protected as a landmark. So there's a big difference as to why some stadiums are torn down quickly and some aren't.

Although the astrodome is very old, the 60-year-old stadium still doesn't have any further plans for demolition despite the efforts of officials, property owners, etc. and It's very hard to determine the future of the dome. A couple years back it was finally dubbed a historical landmark/place in Houston and is now fenced off with e only plan in mind being dormancy.

Another abandoned stadium is one near my house. McCoy Stadium in Pawtucket, Rhode Island. It was the home of the Pawtucket Red Sox, AAA Affiliate of the Boston Red Sox. It was built in 1945, renovated in 1999. Last season before the move to Worcester, Massachusetts was supposed to be in 2020. They literally got taken away. It is scheduled to be demolished sometime this year. It was supposed to come down in March but it's still standing. Very sad that professional baseball is no longer played there. Even more sad that it didn't get a final season due to COVID.

I'm not even 30 seconds in and I'm curious to what extent you researched your information. The Ballpark was turned into a football field almost right after the last Rangers game there. You make it sound like it sat empty until the XFL put a team in there this year. There's been football played there since 2019, specifically high school football from the various Arlington ISD schools. It also hosted the last round of XFL before it was shut down during Covid.

GA State did take over Turner Field the Atlanta Olympic stadium that was the home of the Braves before they departed for the suburbs in Cobb County. GA State will have that facility for many years to come as it suits their ever expanding downtown Atlanta campus footprint and it is a nice home for the relatively new Panther football program who previously played in the GA Dome before it was demolished with the building of the Mercedes Benz Stadium.

The astrodome seats actually sold at a live auction here in Houston a few years back. As far as demolition, the imploded the towers/stairs back in like 2015/16. If the Texans do end up getting a new stadium in a few years, they’re gonna have to demolish it because it’s literally nowhere else in the city to build a new stadium to seat a NFL team imo lol. The whole NRG Park was built for the sole purpose for the livestock show and rodeo & and the Texans/Oilers

Won’t be knocked down on the national registry and they have had many attempts to salvage or knock down but it’s in the 20+ mill range. The Astrodome is not only a historical landmark so it can't be torn down, but it is a huge local issue that keeps it from being able to have anything done to it
1/3 of Houston wants to protect it (hence the reason it became a historical landmark a decade after being condemned)
1/3 this this place is an absolute waste of money, city spends about $ 200k/yr just letting it sit there empty for 18 years, and there are those that see it as an absolute waste of tax money and just want to destroy it, but the estimates are that it will cost 25 million to tear it down and They can't get enough momentum for voters to pass that
1/3 of the city has a fondness that wants to see it developed into something else but that group is so factioned that you can't ever get a single project to gain momentum. They have proposed, parking garage, casino, hotel, indoor shopping center, revitalization etc. But every group has their own individual interest and they can't come together to get anyone from the other groups to move it forward
As a houstonian I fall in the second category of seeing this as an absolute waste of taxpayer money And I love the historical component to the ballpark, But you're never going to get it back, At this point all of the plumbing/sewage has even been torn out of the building as a part of the building of the reliant next to it-- Just stop wasting money on the thing take a bid and tear it down

It isn't horrible but the sight lines are off. I've been in the press box to run the clock for a football game and the problem is that it is directly behind home plate. Fine for baseball but terrible for football. When play is at the south end (down by the original right field bleachers) you can barely tell what's going on. The clock guys need either a spotter or 3 guys running things -- play clock, game clock, and someone to punch the buttons. Ordinarily, the game clock guy does the scoring and stuff on the scoreboard, but you can't do that at that ballpark, at least not for football.

IIRC Valencia got hit very hard in the 2007 economic crash, and then the situation was made worse from overspending on players. Say what you will about American sports, but at least they make teams secure the funding before breaking ground on a stadium.

because most are built with public money not private

@@bostonrailfan2427 Depends. Most NFL stadiums take a ton of public funding, but MLB parks and indoor arenas, particularly in larger markets, are increasingly using private funding or tax breaks because the teams know they can make money on the venue in the long run if they own it.

They could do a complete renovation on the Astrodome if they wanted to, but you are talking a billion dollars possibly to do so. It would be pointless considering the Texans staduim is right next door, which is better in every way, that you can use that money instead, to keep that staduim up to par with modern standards. so, that it could continue to host superbowls in the future.

With the astrodome I think it is still up cause it was the world's first concrete doomed stadium without any visible supports or something like that.
Or is it thayit was the world's first domed stadium?
Yeah it's because of it being the world's first something as to why it is still standing.

How about mentioning the Shah Alam Stadium here in Malaysia which has been abandoned for so long since 2013 but recently got plans to demolish the stadium and rebuild it as a smaller stadium with multiple sports fascility, like the main KL Sports City which has the Bukit Jalil National Stadium? @Depressed Ginger

Why would you want it knocked down? I say just keep all the old ballparks standing. Better than some strip mall.

Yeah Turner Field is home of Georgia State's Football team now, they are actually building the area up around there with shops and college housing. So seems like Turner Field is most likely not going anywhere. (I Lived In Atlanta for a couple years)
