I have a mixed bag when it comes to ice spice mainly bc I do like her music and personality I’m a fellow New Yorker so I know cute nice girls like her she reminds me a lot of homegirls I knew growing up and I’m happy to see a NYC girl breakout in rap and the mainstream HOWEVER ice spice is truly the embodiment of how colorism is destroying mainstream female rap I’m sorry no one can not tell me her being light skinned and pretty have not been a contributing factor to her career idc especially when compared to the likes of Lola brooks, flo milli, Bree runway, etc I think this issue is more towards the hip hop industry for homogenizing female rap into sexualized lighter skinned (and in some cases mixed race) rappers with mediocre talent and big social media following and not making a balanced diversity for many girls being able to generate acclaim and success from sexually liberated girls to gangsta girls to socially conscious girls to experimental quirky girls, female rappers especially since black female rap is way too diverse for it to be one type of girls to blow, it really started with cardi b and have been a domino effect since. I personally spend my time supporting the female rappers I love since it’s nothing I can do about a systematic issue like this and call things for what it is, I do like ice but we need to stop dancing around the bruch to her career there is the great marketing and management, perfect timing and unique style that has helped her however the colorism is the biggest factor
To me the real princess of rap is Megan thee stallion no one wants to say it bc a lot of the main female rap fans are barbs who hate her bc her beef with Nicki but it’s always been Megan she won’t get that title nor she’s been able to fully grown into queen of rap territory mainly bc of her former label sabotaging her career due to her suing them for putting her in a bad contract, and there’s also the factor that she doesn’t make mainstream pop rap music she’s a southern hip hop artist that experiments with different rap subgenres as well as other music genres but to me it’s Megan each of her album have charted in the top ten in the billboard 200 and gone gold/ platinum every lead/solo single she’s dropped have charted on the billboard hot 100 she had made such a significant cultural impact of everything she’s done, developed a bankable and loyal fanbase and is top tier talented the only mainstream female rapper besides Nicki who the best among the mainstream rap girls but can go toe to toe with the underground rap girls. Megan also has the potential to break the mold among female rappers being boxed into a archetype she’s proven she can fit in the sexually liberated girls like Nicki, cupcakke and Latto, as well as sit with the socially conscious political girls like rapsody, noname, etc with tramutatize and cobra and then be able to fit with the experimental quirky girls like azealia banks, Rico nasty, Doja cat and shy girl she has a very chameleon esque quality while holding on to her unique, charismatic personality that make it distinctive. I hope with her new deal she can show everyone her queen of rap potential and actually change the landscape for female rap even more

Megan is also getting better with her sound. While most people view Cobra as not being playable enough, it’s great to see extend her in penmanship in places we have yet to hear. People complain about Meg talking about her 🐱 and her drinking problems, but she’s becoming more and more vulnerable which is something that rap fans have been begging her to do, but don’t ever give it a listen.

I love Megan, she’s 100% my favorite mainstream female rapper right now if we exclude Nicki. I do agree that the “beef” with Nicki & the situation with Tory Lanez as well sort of put a mark on her career. She has developed a lot of people who hate on her now bc of that. & with Ice, the support from Barbz & Swifties definitely helps bc anytime those fandoms have your back then you’ll be good. But I agree with you, colorism is no doubt a contributory factor in the success of her career. There are insanely talented rap girls that have been in the game longer & haven’t gotten the success she’s had yet due to it.

@@Keliforniamediaright I think Megan is low key a underdog and a dark horse in mainstream rap something about i feel about her she’s gonna break everyone’s expectations of her in the near future and like I said colorism is not big in ice career but almost the entirety of mainstream female rap and it’s unfair and unfortunate I do hope rappers like docheii and little smiz breakthrough very soon and have long lasting careers

Colorism goes both ways let the light skin racial ambiguous and yt girls win for once, light skin brown bw and regular ol bw have dominated hip hop forever now, yeah I’d like to see more dark skin women win too tho

Great video! I’m curious to see if she has career longevity or if she’ll be a flash in the pan. I do find it weird that she’s been called princess of rap when, like you said, she really hasn’t put out enough music to determine that. She has a great team behind her and a great image. But if the music doesn’t hit or she doesn’t deliver, I think people will get bored and lose interest. Marketing and pretty privilege can only get you so far tbh.

Yes exactly! So far she’s become really likable to the public since she’s young, fresh, new sound & cute style. But I’m afraid that I’ve already heard a lot of people saying that all her songs and lyrics sound recycled/repetitive so it could possibly hurt her career in the long run if people lose interest bc of her lack of versatility.

I hope she has a really good team that advocates for her throughout this journey. There have been way too many cases of young artists being pushed and manipulated into doing more than they can handle. Just tell them make their labels money. 😞

@@shizzlemywizzle1 I know!! It’s super sad to see those cases of young people gaining fame too fast. Just like Kpop artists. Justin Bieber is a good example of that as well, and he is pretty open about how the industry messed him up and he was only a kid. :/
