Simon's first order to have McClane wear the sign wasn't essential to the plan. He was supposed to be killed there as revenge for killing Hans in Die Hard 1, but Zeus saved him. The rest of the plan could be done by anyone because it's a wild goose chase leading up to the bomb threat as a distraction to empty out the area. McClane and Zeus being dragged into the goosechase was Simon just fucking with them by giving them instructions they were never supposed to be able to complete.
I’ve seen the movie while on business trips in several countries. They change the sandwich board sign to be blank; say ‘ i hate everyone”, or make it blurry. It’s my fun detail to watch.

It was probably left open and someone saw that it was a bomb and after the explosion, people would be on high alert. Even a kid would know that was a bomb.
Simon wanted it to be found, so the NYPD would know what they are dealing with and (from police reports) how much. It was probably left very suspiciously or was called in by Simon.
Just one note. Regarding Simon wanting Zeus to participate, I think it makes sense as a punishment. If it’s hinted that anyone who helps him gets sucked in, it further incentivizes them to actively avoid getting help.
1:00 I liked this Dump Trucks moment. I missed it when younger. The movie did a good job of foreshadowing there. Very subtle, you don't even notice it till you watch it again a few times.

Because it drove me INSANE, not knowing how they did the water jug riddle when I first saw this movie: step 1) Fill the 5 gallon jug all the way to the top step 2) Pour that into the 3 gallon jug until it is full, leaving exactly 2 gallons in the 5 gallon jug step 3) Empty the 3 gallon jug and pour the exact 2 gallons into it (now it has exactly one gallon of empty space) step 4) Fill the 5 gallon jug all the way up and pour it into the 3 gallon jug until it is full. 5 gallons minus one gallon is exactly 4 gallons.

I think Simon leaves the briefcase at the beginning, to show the police how serious and dangerous he is, ensuring that they have no choice but to comply. This was the 90's, so I doubt the authorities could reverse engineer an exploded device quickly enough to react accordingly within the hour. With the first explosion at Bonwitt Towers and the playground briefcase, Simon shows the damage that the bombs can do AND that the bombs are very sophisticated and can be set off by whatever means he wants. It was probably also a conscious move to steal the chemicals from a place that would report it, instead of buying from a black market dealer, so the police would know that he has A LOT of them. By leaving the briefcase in a playground, he shows the police that he has no problem killing kids, despite the bomb never being armed (no puzzle or anything, like you said). Simon later says "I'm a soldier, not a monster." when McClane guesses that there is no bomb in any of the schools, letting us know that he played the police force, by pretending to be more merciless than he really is.
Yes, in fact Simon even says so to the police chief at the end of the bomb-demonstration scene (something along the line of "If you are barely competent, you have already found my briefcase"): he wanted the police to find it and realize how powerful the explosive mixture is, so that they panic when he says he placed 2000 pounds of it in a school.
Even if he didn't intend to kill children, he still threatened their lives with a terroristic threat and 400 counts of child endangerment charges and 400 counts of attempted murder. This alone would have given him the death penalty.

The racism angle was awesome when the movie came out, and there's a reason why they chose to show it in the way that they did. The movie tried to show that when the chips are down, we all have to work together despite our differences, opinions and prejudices, and that if we actually poke our heads out of our little worlds (Zeus' in this case), we may find that we have more in common with the ones we hate on principle than we thought. This being delivered by two of the most prominent and respected actors in the world has to have had a big impact on at least some people. I had never given racism a thought when I saw this movie (I was just 12 at the time), but it gives a pretty good (albeit simplified) picture of how white people saw Harlem, how black people saw Harlem, and how ridiculous the whole racism-thing is, since we can all work together towards a common goal, if we just look at each other as humans instead of colors or races.

I cringe though where they did that mother fucker scene and it was clear it wasn't n&$#. Also Zeus quickly understood John had no choice and was doing it to prevent a bomb. I love this movie...the last die hard that wasn’t garbage. The last movie before John McClane evolved into a full blown kryptonian in Adamantium armor.
The story for Live Free was all wrong. McClane is reactive not proactive. His wife was in danger in the first two and in the third he was targeted by Simon. He had no reason to go after the villains in Live Free. It was too big a canvas for the little everyman McClane to handle. Worst of all, Bruce looked so bored and his sardonic humor was almost absent. He doesn't swear anymore and I'm not including the unrated version because that wasn't released to theaters. The studio didn't give a damn about the old fans and wanted to attract a younger audience. Seriously, who asked for a PG13 Die Hard? They didn't have faith that an R rated Die Hard film would perform well in a sea of mediocre cgi comic book movies.
@@jdxsr85 Live Free came out in 2007, the MCU wasn't a thing back then. So "mediocre cgi comic book movies" were pretty much only 3 Spider-Man movies, 3 X-Men movies and 2 Fantastic Four movies. I don't think those few films influenced the filmmakers of Die Hard.

All the Die Hard sequels started out as completely different unrelated scripts. This one was originally a movie about Zeus called "Simon Says" but was later rewritten and adapted into a Die Hard movie. It even almost became a Lethal Weapon sequel before it became Die Hard. So, he actually nailed it. Fun fact.

The first bombs (The one that exploded and the one in Chinatown) were obviously put there to make the locations seem random to the police. If they found four bombs around Wall Street it would have been pretty obvious from the start what Simons end game was. Also, there just was no endgame to Zeus. Simon says so himself at the end: I didn't invite you to this party
My favorite part is when the car crashes through the overpass barrier, begins falling, but then they must have hit the rockets because it somehow levels off and starts rising back up in mid-air for a moment.
This film is and will always be one of the best I've seen, and I've seen A LOT of films. Samuel and Bruce made a brilliant duo.
The FILM is great! The script sucks.

It was probably left open and someone saw that it was a bomb and after the explosion, people would be on high alert. Even a kid would know that was a bomb.
Simon wanted it to be found, so the NYPD would know what they are dealing with and (from police reports) how much. It was probably left very suspiciously or was called in by Simon.
Just one note. Regarding Simon wanting Zeus to participate, I think it makes sense as a punishment. If it’s hinted that anyone who helps him gets sucked in, it further incentivizes them to actively avoid getting help.

Because it drove me INSANE, not knowing how they did the water jug riddle when I first saw this movie:
step 1) Fill the 5 gallon jug all the way to the top
step 2) Pour that into the 3 gallon jug until it is full, leaving exactly 2 gallons in the 5 gallon jug
step 3) Empty the 3 gallon jug and pour the exact 2 gallons into it (now it has exactly one gallon of empty space)
step 4) Fill the 5 gallon jug all the way up and pour it into the 3 gallon jug until it is full. 5 gallons minus one gallon is exactly 4 gallons.
You can do it 2 ways, actually.. Either start by filling the 5 gallon or start by filling the 3 gallon. Both ways work.

I think Simon leaves the briefcase at the beginning, to show the police how serious and dangerous he is, ensuring that they have no choice but to comply. This was the 90's, so I doubt the authorities could reverse engineer an exploded device quickly enough to react accordingly within the hour. With the first explosion at Bonwitt Towers and the playground briefcase, Simon shows the damage that the bombs can do AND that the bombs are very sophisticated and can be set off by whatever means he wants. It was probably also a conscious move to steal the chemicals from a place that would report it, instead of buying from a black market dealer, so the police would know that he has A LOT of them. By leaving the briefcase in a playground, he shows the police that he has no problem killing kids, despite the bomb never being armed (no puzzle or anything, like you said). Simon later says "I'm a soldier, not a monster." when McClane guesses that there is no bomb in any of the schools, letting us know that he played the police force, by pretending to be more merciless than he really is.
Yes, in fact Simon even says so to the police chief at the end of the bomb-demonstration scene (something along the line of "If you are barely competent, you have already found my briefcase"): he wanted the police to find it and realize how powerful the explosive mixture is, so that they panic when he says he placed 2000 pounds of it in a school.
Even if he didn't intend to kill children, he still threatened their lives with a terroristic threat and 400 counts of child endangerment charges and 400 counts of attempted murder. This alone would have given him the death penalty.

The racism angle was awesome when the movie came out, and there's a reason why they chose to show it in the way that they did. The movie tried to show that when the chips are down, we all have to work together despite our differences, opinions and prejudices, and that if we actually poke our heads out of our little worlds (Zeus' in this case), we may find that we have more in common with the ones we hate on principle than we thought. This being delivered by two of the most prominent and respected actors in the world has to have had a big impact on at least some people. I had never given racism a thought when I saw this movie (I was just 12 at the time), but it gives a pretty good (albeit simplified) picture of how white people saw Harlem, how black people saw Harlem, and how ridiculous the whole racism-thing is, since we can all work together towards a common goal, if we just look at each other as humans instead of colors or races.
Agreed. It was part of the Zeus character with self reliance and how cops care less about Harlem and violence there.

I love this movie...the last die hard that wasn’t garbage. The last movie before John McClane evolved into a full blown kryptonian in Adamantium armor.
4 was pretty good, but the rest were after Unbreakable, so McClane can’t die...
The story for Live Free was all wrong. McClane is reactive not proactive. His wife was in danger in the first two and in the third he was targeted by Simon. He had no reason to go after the villains in Live Free. It was too big a canvas for the little everyman McClane to handle. Worst of all, Bruce looked so bored and his sardonic humor was almost absent. He doesn't swear anymore and I'm not including the unrated version because that wasn't released to theaters. The studio didn't give a damn about the old fans and wanted to attract a younger audience. Seriously, who asked for a PG13 Die Hard? They didn't have faith that an R rated Die Hard film would perform well in a sea of mediocre cgi comic book movies.

It's because the trope is actually subverted. A character says "take a look at this" instead of telling outright to create tension for the viewer. In this case we already know what this is about and we never hear him saying it either.

So, he actually nailed it. Fun fact.
