Been watching for a while but first time I've seen Garrett on the front side of the camera. Nice work - the new generation is on the way to point out the knuckleheads.
This is the 'ball of wax' right here. How we place ourselves, particularly us '9-5' types with kids and a dog. I've been taking that day off (okay 3 a week) and have that effect as said here, you feel fresh next ride. I only ride solo unless I bump into the local groups so I'm both good with 3 rides a week, 250km, and in the dark as to whether I'd get smashed after 2 hours or so. Probably would but so be it!
I got out of the Army at 24, just before 25 years old. I was in great shape as I had walked 350 miles in a month with a 50 to 60 lbs. pack. I took up running and found at 165 lbs. 6 feet tall I was too heavy for running. I took up bicycle commutes and long distance riding with friends. One Jim Elliott was the first to ride 500 miles in 24 hours. I supported Jim in the RAAM, Race Across America. I was his friend and had ridden 24 hours 2 times completing 330 miles each time.
Do you remember winning a race In San Francisco while thinking you still had another lap left? I was there for other reasons and stumbled upon the end of that race. This was a long time ago, before Garrett won the swimming race of his life!
Yes. I do. Hard to forget meeting Robin Williams at the finish line while in the podium. The car for 1st place was nice but meeting Robin and chatting with him was really cool. 🦋👊🌉
Chris, when you're talking about people potentially not spending enough time recovering, are you referring to anything beyond sleep and nutrition? I see some pros doing massage/ice baths/etc but don't know if that's actually effective.
I live in an area with lots of flat terrain but also wind (live near ocean in Sweden). Some sessions are like riding uphill. Even if flat, one need to use easy gears otherswise muscles get over strained.
If you have a desk job instead of a physicial 9-5 job, does it makes sense to increase training time? Do you consider the stresses of the two the same and thus the body cannot recover well?
Increase it from how much or do you mean just to be doing more than the construction worker. I would think a desk job would allow more time on the bike than someone on their feet all day and lifting heavy objects. But of course that’s not tested. When I was young and working at the bike shop i was on my feet often I was still able to train a ton. But that was with no family and no house to worry about and take care of. 🤔🦋👊
I grew up in DDR and we all have to ride with fixed gear , what do you think about it ? This trainging we have to do in winter in cold conditions until spring , some times uphill.
Ofcourse you wouldn't let Roglič go, he is practically family! Rog = Horn, lič = er (one possibility) BTW. in Slovania, roglič is also a pastry similar to a croissant
Interesting comments re the best DS' out there. The thing with a guy like Bruyneel is yes, he is controversial, probably does deserve that life time ban, but equally there are many just like him still working. And they get hired as Chris say, because they know the job and they do it well.
For me, a 440 mile week if drafting any amount of time or riding easy is about 9000kj. I can do that in 12 hours if I ride high endurance and its only like 225 miles. Miles are silly metric is what I'm saying.
Weight training is very beneficial. I wouldn’t go by what CH says here since he’s never really tried it. Core work and lower body, waist down. Heavy, strength training, 6 reps or less, 3-4 sets per exercise, 8-10 week cycle in the off season. It does help a great deal. Cycling is non weight bearing. Heavy Weights will help with your bone density no matter what age, but especially older.
After weeks of no lifting everyone will dramatically lose a big percentage of the weight lifting benifits quickly and I found it impossible to do both while training 550-700 miles a week and recovery properly. While you are right about the bone density I am only giving advice on how to be fast on the bike as a GC rider. Never was I talking about overall health. If over all health and fitness is one’s priority then of course weightlifting or core work takes on more importance. We already know that sprinters lift weights often and we know they get dropped first. 🤪🤔🦋👊
@ According to Dylan Johnsons testing, the benefits didn’t fade. He highly suggests it, and in my personal use have always been faster for the whole spring summer season after. My routine suggestion was very generic. He gets into much more specificity. I’m 60, and the weights are mandatory regardless, and I’m not doing much else in the cold of NJ winter. No downsides to not doing it.
@@GNX157 Chris Horner (a masterful winning cyclist) is telling us what HE did, not what WE should do at 60 years old. He's not an exercise physiologist. When Dylan Johnson wins the Vuelta, he can explain how he did it. I'll lift weights for my health, but also ride for my health. No friggin' way I'm riding as much as a pro because 1. I can't, 2. I'd break down, 3. I'm too old, 4. I have other stuff I like to do.
In your last comment about an all-American team, while UAE could easily miss MacNulty, could Visma (Vingegard) be competitive at the TdeF, missing both Kuss and Jorgenson? Last season, Jorgenson stepped in to fill Kuss's shoes. Who is the next backup at Visma?
Is it ok to take 2 days off a week if my other days are as follows Training for a 120 mile time trial 7 hours 4 hours 7 hours OFF 7 hours 4 hours OFF TOTAL hours 29 per week Thanks! 😊
That’s 8 days or more each month. 8 days is more than a week. There are only four weeks in a month. You are giving up 25% or your month so I would say no to that. But and this but is import because you didn’t tell me why you take two days off each week. So let me give you a good reason to take two days off each week if let’s say you worked more hours those days so you could train better other days. If that’s not the reason or something close to that to explain the off days then you should continue training those days. 🤔🦋👊
Chris always just loves to tell everybody how he's the oldest winner of a grand tour. And I don't my dad. But he doesn't tell everybody that he is dope to do it and he ran away from the officials the last day of the race and never took his dope test he never brings that up but if you look into it you'll find out it's true. Everybody else during that era had to fess up I just don't know why he doesn't do it
So awesome to see a father and son live out their passion together. This is what it is all about

Someone has to be watching and learning . 👀👊😂🦋🦋🦋🦋🦋🦋🦋🦋🦋🦋
Please do a whole video on training hours for a week... for casual, amateur and wanna be pros... for people who work 7am-4pm jobs
👊🦋

Oh snap that’s your son! That’s awesome. So what we thinking? Climber? All rounder?
That I do not know yet. 😂👊🦋
This was a fun video to watch. Nice.
👊🦋
Sure Appreciate your perspective, Chris! -
🦋👊
Wow! Really appreciate the sincere replies to the questions, and the extra insight from Garrett too! You two are a great team.👍🏆
If Garret goes pro... his dad will be lost without his behind the scenes contributions.
😂🦋👊
Love to see a video on stretching. It’s an area I really lack
Great show!

How nice to see garrett enjoying his luscious hair (while he still has some :)
Can you make a video showing the stretches you recommend? Thanks again for the great content and information
I have been wanting to do that video for years now. 😂🦋👊
You don't wanna ride for Jayco Alula? 😂🤣
Great video 👍

I’d like to hear how you trained as a pro, was it as simple as you make it sound ? I.e. no specific intervals ect.

What's you boys specialty? Imma guess Time Trial specialist?
We don’t know yet 🤔🦋👊
Did you do any PEDs? You're retired so you can be upfront
That’s a rabbit whole that never ends. 🤪🦋.

Weight training: Look at track thighclists. You only speak for yourself. Do better about everyone or add a disclaimer.
I think your kid needs to shave his head .
Why does Lantern Rouge have more subscribers than you when you were the pro with the real experience? Don't viewers want the real deal?
Patrick Visma? Somehow they get around licensing with the videos. Something to do with being in Andorra perhaps.
@@J-cz7yvI think I read somewhere Lantern pays for a license in order to use video footage.
