Honestly the best movie of 2019. Dafoe's monologue is LEGENDARY. Shakespearean worthy if you'll allow me. "Hark Triton, hark! Bellow, bid our father the Sea King rise from the depths full foul in his fury! Black waves teeming with salt foam to smother this young mouth with pungent slime, to choke ye, engorging your organs til' ye turn blue and bloated with bilge and brine and can scream no more - only when he, crowned in cockle shells with slitherin' tentacle tail and steaming beard take up his fell be-finned arm, his coral-tine trident screeches banshee-like in the tempest and plunges right through yer gullet, bursting ye - a bulging bladder no more, but a blasted bloody film now and nothing for the harpies and the souls of dead sailors to peck and claw and feed upon only to be lapped up and swallowed by the infinite waters of the Dread Emperor himself - forgotten to any man, to any time, forgotten to any god or devil, forgotten even to the sea, for any stuff for part of Winslow, even any scantling of your soul is Winslow no more, but is now itself the sea! people back then used to go crazy all the time working lighthouses. theres one true story of two guys working the same lighthouse and it was known they werent too fond of each other, one day one of them got sick and passed away and the other one thought "damn they think i kill him!" so for evidence that the body was unharmed he kept him around, i think he strapped him with ropes to the side of the lighthouse or something like couple meters high as there were hooks he could tie him to, and apparently due to the wind the dead corpse waved at him and that guy then went completely mad.
could be an urban myth though, still stories like these are numerous

I once heard that the very heavy fresnel lens was afloat in mercury to minimize friction so it would turn more easily. The keepers breathed in the fumes which again would affect the brain. Add to that long lonely shifts on some godforsaken rock, and there you go.

"When Griffith died in a freak accident, Howell feared that if he discarded the body into the sea, authorities might accuse him of murder. As Griffith's body began to decompose, Howell built a makeshift coffin for the corpse and lashed it to an outside shelf. Stiff winds blew the box apart, and the body's arm fell within view of the hut's window. As the winds would blow, gusts would catch the arm and move it in a way that made the appendage appear to beckon. In spite of his former partner's decaying corpse and working the lighthouse alone, Howell was able to keep the house's lamp lit. When Howell was finally relieved of duty, the impact of the situation was so emotionally taxing that his friends did not recognize him. As a result, the governing body changed the lighthouse policy to make lighthouse teams rosters of three people, which continued until the automation of British lighthouses in the 1980s."

I suspect that both characters in this movie are the same person, which is why it is eventually revealed they have the same first name. The island they're on is like a metaphor for this person's psyche, or soul and the way the interior reality of a person's psyche is forever cut off from any other person's reality. If you think about it, nobody can ever really truly know somebody else, so we really are like islands, and what I think the movie is getting at is that we can't even be sure we know ourselves. The older wiser part of this person, or the super ego, controls the rational faculty of mind, symbolized by the light in the lighthouse, while the younger version of himself is base instinct, or id, which fights for control of the rational faculty but has to be disciplined by super ego. It's something like that. If you think about it as a metaphor for the conflicting parts of somebody's psyche, a lot of the weirder aspects of the movie start to make more sense.
The ending is a reference to the myth of Prometheus, who stole the fire from the gods and gave it to humanity but was punished for it by being chained to a rock and doomed to forever having his perpetually respawning liver eaten by gulls every day for eternity. It's an ancient Greek version of the Garden of Eden story in Genesis and the idea that with knowledge (the fire, light, or the apple from the tree of knowledge), comes moral responsibility because knowledge makes agency and moral choice possible. If you imagine Prometheus as a symbol for higher order abstract thinking and the humans he gives the fire to as a symbol for baser earlier man before we developed the capacity to think, you get super ego vs id.

In part, if ya care, this is loosely framed on The Shining (as Mr Movies joked about). Many details point to this - but for the story's sake all that really matters is that Tom (all 3 of em!) is the caretaker, and he's *always* been the caretaker.
Also its inspired by the greek myths of Proteus and Prometheus, and also a Poe story with the same title. Probably other stuff too...

2:46 The film was shot in Orthochromatic film (that film stock is more sensitive to blue colors and had a harder time capturing red colors); so anything that was blue and to some extant green, had more exposure, while anything that was red, rendered a deeper and darker black color. For example, when Willem Defoe is giving his "Hark, Trident! Hark!" scene, since his face is becoming more blushed (redder) with his emotions rising, his face becomes more and more black, more and more menacing. And the 4x3 ratio is a reference to the ratio of film making of that period, all the while inducing a heightened sense of anxiety and claustrophobia.

Just an incredible piece of filmmaking in every facet. My brother and I were big fans of the VVitch and Pattinson's steady turn toward very serious and interesting movies, so we were absolutely hyped for the Lighthouse (and we knew Dafoe was going to be amazing). Went and saw it in the theaters on opening night, and we both walked out in a bit of a daze trying to process it all. I was wondering about the time loop theory but the ending shot of Pattinson being eaten by seagulls immediately made me think of the Prometheus myth, and the light was the fire of the gods that he stole and brought to humanity.
That shot of naked Dafoe with the light projecting from his eyes onto Pattinson is an homage to an early 20th century etching called "Hypnosis", which I believe was meant as the artist making a symbolic commentary on the power of masculine intimacy over himself. I'm still ultimately leaning toward a modern interpretation of Prometheus, especially with the presence of sirens/mermaids and Dafoe's transformation into Triton or Neptune/Poseidon.

I think they are the same person, which is why it's revealed that they have the same name. My guess is that the island and the lighthouse are a metaphor for any one person's soul, meaning their interior psychological reality. No person can truly know anybody else, so we really are like islands. Arguably we can't even truly know ourselves, because every person's psyche is split into conflicting and antagonistic drives. That's what I think the two characters are. The light in the lighthouse is a symbol for the rational faculty of mind. To possess it would be to have control of the soul, psyche, or consciousness. The older version Thomas represents the super ego, or rational part of the psyche, while the younger version of Thomas represents the id, or baser instinctual part of us that is furthest from reason. We often know what is right or good, but we'll have desires which convince us to ignore this knowledge, so people are often at war with themselves, with different conflicting aspects of the psyche fighting for control, and the rational part of the mind tries to discipline the baser instincts. I think that's what it's about. If you think of it as a symbolic representation of a single person's psyche and its conflicting parts, the weirder aspects of the movie start to come into focus and make a lot more sense.
This interpretation fits if you're familiar with Plato's tripartite soul. It would also explain the Prometheus reference, which Plato also references in his explanation of how the "soul" or consciousness is composed. This could be a stretch though because it's an open question as to if Eggers himself is familiar with the details of that theory. Not a lot of people are who didn't study it. I could be just reading it into the film where it doesn't exist. It could also be that the older man is what Plato refers to as the "spirited" part of the soul, and the younger man is the "appetitive" part, with the light being a symbol for the rational faculty of mind that both want control over.

The part in which Dafoe's eyes are beaming into Pattinsons eyes and the end with Pattinson getting pecked on are both inspired by famous art pieces! For the life of me I can't remember the names but I thought that was cool :)

I have a theory about the dirt that gets shoveled onto Dafoe's face. When I first saw it I thought he was actually eating dirt just because of how much he commits to the role and the scene, but then I remember talking with some other film fan friends of mine who mentioned the black and white grading would make it super easy to use ground up oreos instead. Movie magic!

Based on a True Story if no-one has mentioned it in comments! 2 Lighthouse actually disappeared from a Lighthouse during a storm and no one could understand what had happened. They or their bodies were never found, it was an explicable mystery. Their coats err on the hooks and a meal was on the table I believe? Or at least their were strange things that just didn't make rational sense, protocol was to not to go outside in severe storms etc. And certainly not both of them at the same time. So in the true case, no one knows what happened.😮

Just my thoughts. I feel like the fever dream while you die all takes place in those months we’ve seen as the viewer.

This was an utter nightmare to shoot. To get this dark film look the set needed to be blinding bright. You notice on occasion they are squinting because of it, but damn if it wasn't worth it. My favorite part is obviously the Willem Dafoe rant over the cooking. That entire thing earned a star by itself in my rating.

This whole movie is basically the story of Prometheus told through the eyes of lighthouse workers using old Sailor folklore. This movie is much more about creating atmosphere and fear than linear story telling. Also believe it or not this is based on a true story and Egger's used old diaries of lighthouse workers from this period to write all of the dialogue so that it is authentic to the time.
