Fun fact: in the novel, when Dracula feeds the baby to his brides, the child's mother was in the courtyard below the window screaming and tearing her hair out. When he grew tired of her noises, the vampire summoned his wolves to devour her alive. It's a real upbeat story.

@@jamiehill3621 To be fair, the inspiration for the fictional Dracula, Vlad III Ţepeş, was born a Wallachian prince and a cousin to 15th century Hungarian Regent John Hunyadi. The fact that Hunyadi mutilated and murdered his father Vlad II Dracul and brother Mircea II while Vlad III was imprisoned by the Ottomans notwithstanding, of course. Also, none of this has to do with the novel or Lugosi.

The real Dracula was a 14th century Wallachian prince name Vlad Dracula (1431-1476), also known as Vlad Tepes (Impaler). He is considered a national hero in Romania due to his resistance of the ever present threat the Ottoman Turks posed to Christian kingdoms. Yes, he is known for his ruthless and uncompromising stance against enemies and corrupt court officials and boyar nobles where punishments consisted of impalement, skinning, flaying, exposure to wild animals and the elements.

In the book, he didn't say I never drink. He said I never sup, meaning eat supper .Also, the book is very unique in that it is written as a collection of letters, notes, diary entries, journal entries, recordings, newspaper clippings and so on. You can see that in the way that some of the characters read part of their letters and the journal on the ship. Very well done.

The woman on the stage coach who handed Keanu Reeves the crucifix said, "Because the dead travel fast."
In the novel, Jonathan Harker sees blue flames in the mountains while riding through the Carpathians with a coachman who is actually Dracula. The coachman explains that the flames indicate where treasure is hidden, and that this is especially true on a certain night of the year when evil spirits are said to have free reign.
In the 19th century, the lines between werewolves and vampires were not as defined as today (thanks to Hollywood). So, in the novel, Dracula can turn into a werewolf.
And Vlad the impaler, the historical figure the character Dracula was based on, was indeed a prince. And Mina did tell Dracula her name.
It's not being bitten that turns you into a vampire. It's drinking a vampire's blood. If a vampire bites you and drains your blood - you die. But if the vampire drains your blood to the point of death and then has you drink his blood, you turn into a vampire.
Lucy did drink Dracula's blood. When she went out into the garden when Dracula first bit her (when he was in werewolf form) when Mina was bringing her back into the house, Lucy said, "I can still taste his blood in my mouth." You need to pay closer attention to the dialogue.
The three female vampires are not concubines. They are Dracula's brides.

ANSWER TO THE OPENING CROSS SCENE: Mina WAS his wife, she's a reincarnated version, and SHE was the only one who could free him since she was the reason he made the pact with the devil. CROSS SCENE OPENNING: You guys weren't listening at the beginning (reading the subtitles) lol. When Dracula finds out that Elizabeta committed suicide .... A. He learns she won't be accepted into Heaven and B. Since Dracula fought for Christ he feels betrayed and wants to get vengeance on God. So, he renounces Christ and makes a pact with Satan to give him everlasting life so he could always live, defying God and defiling all His creatures. He has to pierce the cross to get the blood (Christ's or Satan's) probably the latter, to seal the deal. Thats why when he drinks the blood he's in pain, because he's technically dying and since Satan CAN'T CREATE, he can only keep something "alive" by cursing it to drink blood forever. That's why the priests were freaking out.
