    Awesome commentary, but I gotta admit the funniest part was how mid horror movie your daughter came in to give you a totally separate heart attack. “ Hey guys quick FYI, I can scale the furniture now. Also y’all got some snacks in here?“😂. Kid’s a pro.

      It really is the most accurate visual psychedelic depiction in a movie that I’ve seen, for sure. I’ve only done acid (old school Deadhead acid), but multiple times, and the visuals in this movie looked almost exactly like what I saw every time. • @Lannisen
    @Lannisen ปีที่แล้ว +130

    The research that lies behind this film is honestly impressive, so many details are actually genuine.
    The painting over Dani's bed is by the classic swedish artist John Bauer, the bear and the blonde girl. Perfect foreshadowing.
    Hårga is a place in Hälsingland, and there's a folk song called Hårgalåten (the Hårga Song) in which the devil dresses as a fiddler and makes all the young dance until they die, just like their dance around the may pole.
    We absolutely do make may poles and dance around them on Midsommar, but it's more child games and less rituals.
    The clothes, art, music, it's all very clearly inspired by our folk culture.
    Ättestupa was mention in stories from viking times. If someone lived long enough to be a burden, they had the choice to jump off a cliff and still have an honorable death.
    The blood eagle was also from viking times. They'd open up the spine and pull out the lungs while the person was still alive.
    The scissor in the baby's bed is from swedish folklore. Iron is said to ward off trolls and fae folk that would otherwise try to steal away your child, so scissors, shears, or a nail in the bed of the child would protect them.
    Honestly, the least authentic part of this film is the nature. It wasn't filmed in Sweden, and it shows.

    • @Lannisen
      @Lannisen ปีที่แล้ว +11

      @@Neyenn no, it was filmed in Hungary, not Sweden. It's subtle details that make the difference to me, like what kind of trees are in the woods, what the hills look like, even the light from the sun feels wrong. It's too bright and white, for us (and as far north as Hälsingland is) it looks different.

    At 26:34 - "She seems to be okay with this. She understands it." No - Dani is NOT okay with this. She is in shock. She hasn't fully processed the death of her sister and parents, and now these old people have committed suicide.
    I don't know if you paid attention, but the sound fuzzed out after the lady died. It was to show that Dani was in shock, and was not processing what was around her. This is too much for her system.
    Dani is NOT okay.

    5:34 no in fact they were still alive at some point and was slowly dying. im not sure about the exact scenario theres this unreleased part where danny called her bf for help as to what to do after receiving the message from terri. bf told to shrug it off until danny later on just decided to message her parents. they could technically be saved at some point of she took action faster by herself or was given encouragement to do so.

    When Dani is crying after seeing Christian gettin' bizzay the women surround her and mirror her emotions and support her, , like you mentioned, but of which was a stark contrast to the beginning where she grieved alone. This can be a cult tactic, of course, but to me the Hårga are more than that.
    I believe midsommar happens every year in some capacity but this was a special midsommar is every 90 years. One of the Harga says essentially that when they first arrive. And just based on the fact that they'd have to lure X amount of outsiders to sacrifice every single year. The elders are sacrificed in the year they age up.

    This film is really interesting in how the end looks happy but sane people will understand that it is wrong in every moral way. And knowing the concept of indoctrination, and how she looks happy in the end, you see she found her new family. I like to interpret things freely and I think that many cults are no different than some religions and even club or rave culture groups/scenes. It's just a matter of perspective. And that to me is what really scares me about the film. It's that there are so many different cultures and things we don't understand and that even the slightest bit of desperation or weakness is what compromises you to become a part of these things.
    There's a theory that Dani's sister did not commit familicide and was murdered and framed in that way to push Dani into another "family". Hereditary also has similar themes of manipulating one's grief, which is love that has nowhere to go. And letting people fall into the influence of those around them through positive affirmations regardless of the moral disagreements or violations.
