it is priced (as all TE products) like that because it is not a tool for musicians, but people who buy into the quirky-hipster-jam-musician lifestyle. and like all luxury brands you buy to project an image, the more its products cost, the better the signaling. LVMH will probably buy them soon.
@@robertjamesonmusic as far as features and abilities, I mean the SP404MK2 has sound modules now, and it’s $500. The Digitone 2 is less than half this price. This piece is for the creator who has money to spare. I think we all can agree this is not a starter piece, or a centerpiece. It is a want, 100%. Beautiful piece of gear, but no groundbreaking tech here to support the price. With that said- if you have the money and dig it, get it! If not, cool! No harm no foul.
I think it _can_ be a centrepiece. Don't get me wrong, it's not for me - I don't want one myself. But with midi and CV out options, it can work with lots of external gear, as he says :)
07:50 I always loved the saturated colors of the OG-1. The OP-1f felt like a step down with it's dull and depressing color theme. The black/white theme feels a bit less depressing and more stylistically coherent, but I sure miss the colors a ton
Wished they'd skipped using the OP-1 case and made it slightly larger, that would have killed. Still prohibitively expensive for most at 3 or 4 times the price of an MPC Key 61 for instance.
Yeah it's expensive AF but the interface is just badass. The brain and step components and sound engines are killer. There's never been this complete and slick a sampling groovebox. But still so damn small. This power deserves a larger box, at least another version of it in a bigger case.
Hey there, one question: The external audio input, how good is the sampling/ looping workflow? integrating extrrnal synths/ vocals/ etc into your composition. As this thing sadly has no audio recording track, how long is the sampling time? Is there synced sampling start/ looping?
It does look good. The price? Its hard to swallow. It's not out of my budget, but I have a hard time buying something when I feel like the company is grossly overcharging, which is exactly what is happening here. I'm tempted though.
Something that I've noticed from a lot of the OP-XY videos so far is that the workflow doesn't seem as smooth/tight as the Digitakt 2; basically it seems like it's easier to go from nothing to a full track on the Digitakt 2 versus the OP-XY. Do you have any thoughts on the workflow differences between these devices after having each of them for a while?
just got the op-1 field after having owned the og-1 but can you tell me why this is what the op-1 field shouldve been? isnt the workflow and stuff way different? sorry if im wrong i never used or understood the op-z
yeah pretty much a slap right in our faces. op1f has NO arranger only the tape and only one thing playing at once then you have this, pretty much everything you would want, minus like a single track of just audio.
@@havenloss8107 They began the OP-1 Field campaign with the slogan "This is just the beginning". Making us think major updates to the Field were on the way. They weren't. What was on the way was a bunch of stupidly expensive companion products that nobody was asking for
This is definitely not hate and won't complain about the price, just a thought here. I love the interface and the sheer power, it's really the one box I'd want to turn into a workhorse but wonder if TE or any company will make a similar device that's not so miniature. I always thought it wouldn't be far-fetched for TE to have larger versions of the OP-1, OP-Z, etc. Understanding perfectly they enjoy the miniaturization part and it's a big part of the idea, I still wonder if there's a market for bigger versions of these instruments. I wish I could pay TE for doing it. Just porting that technology and badass design into bigger boxes. You could even have a version that's bigger but still fits in a backpack and then a third version with full-size keys. How awesome would that be? For people who like some sort of integrated keyboard controller, for similar power the choice is currently between OP-XY and MPC Key 37, which is pretty cool too but completely different in terms of workflow and design intention. It seems like there should be something in between.
My favourite thing about TE is how angry people get at their prices, it's like people think they're entitled to cheap stuff. It's a real insult to their ego because they can't afford a piece of gear, even though literally every other segment of music tech and hell, every kind of commodity. has their high end luxury side. Get over yourselves. Good stuff, well made, well design AND small, cost money.
No it's not quality or the design, it's just inflated prices. TE overvalue thier items and it appeals to a particular audience and that's fair enough, just don't pretend it's the rright value for everyone.
This isn't a luxury item. It's a silly, barely usable thing for influencers who produce no music to fleece people like you. I can easily afford it, but I won't ever buy it; it offers nothing for this price.
@@Asyouwere OP was rude and accusatory first, but you're mad at the creator for being glib? This ain't an airport bud, you don't have to announce your departure
Thanks Oora, trying to figure out if this makes sense for my tastes. Do you think it’s suitable for non-beat based music like dark ambient, drone, Berlin school, lofi synthwave, stuff like that?
After this video, I’m actually tempted to get one now. But can anyone offer some honest and viable alternatives? A single box with a screen, sampling, arranging, better synth engines and glitch effects. Digitakt 2 comes to mind but I don’t like Elektron’s workflow. I’ve used OP-1 several times and I enjoy the workflow, and the better synth engines than XY. Deluge is vastly more powerful in sequencing, but again the workflow is a bummer and internal engines are weak. I don’t exactly need a sound design tool, but an arranger with a quick/smooth workflow.
I think you could try first the OP-z , which gives you lot of similarities and then decide. Maybe you could consider the Deluge, Octatrack ( which can definitely go in this direction).
@OoraMusic I got an XY! This video and a couple others helped me decide to buy it… and I am SO GLAD I did! It’s truly a wonderful machine, I can’t wait to start developing my own compositions on it. I want to see more XY from you! You make it sound so dreamy.
you showed me the Perfourmer, I fell in love with it right away and got it, the same happened after I watched your videos on Perkons and OXI, but this OP-XY is not worth the price for me, its too small and too many combo grips.
Now that I am more into synths it is confusing about why it is priced the way it is. It’s super portable which is cool. But for that price you could literally get a set up that probably meets the individuals tastes a little bit better.
it's beautiful. but that price is making it unavailable for me sadface. btw the screen is defo colour, because you have the orange indicator for the recording and if i'm not mistaken there are some subtle tints of colour in some of the animations. great vid as always!
the screen is in color, as can be seen from the red numbers that appear at the beginning. I think TE wanted to keep the grayscale because the machine is black.

The thing about Teenage Engineering is ... the clue is in the title. What else would you expect to get from a design shop staffed by teenage engineers? Some successes, some fails. A disregard for how things are supposed to be done, including hitting the market at sensible prices, swinging back to something cheap and cheerful because they haven't managed their finances very well. A preoccupation with looking great. Some terrible ideas and some absolute flashes of genius. Teenage Engineering, stay forever young my friends.
I’m trying to understand why i would keep my 1F when this thing does everything better
Was just thinking the same thing…
Great review and demonstration! I'm sold and grabbing one!
Hope you enjoy it!
Thank you so much for showing how you experiment and play - the sound quality and track is excellent and wondered if you are processing the sound in any way? Thanks 🙏
Amazing video! Thank you so much!
You're so welcome!
Beautiful track and elegant demo.
Thanks for this man :)
The track you've made with this (during the punch fx section) is beautiful. I'd play this track all the time of I had it, so long as its not full of the glitchy stuff. Got a lovely soulful Detroit sound to it
Thank you for the video. This thing is packed with features. It seems like TE is on the cutting edge of technology, as usual. Bravo!
thanks!!
Grande!! Grazie per la review ❤
ciao!
The Price is outrageous 😠
More outrageous than the price is the fact that the field can probably do most of this and only got a few shitty fx updates over the years
Most of teenage engineering is. Not all just most.
I know, those buttons are supposed to be touch-sensitive, but they still look like the OG OP´s
And for that Price you can Buy an 88-Key Masterkeyboard, a Sequencer, a Sampler
and still have money left for bunch of Synthesizers. Don´t get me wrong this seems like a really sophisticated instrument
I just don´t see myself making my Music on those tiny buttons, all while having to remember a Bazillion dual-press functions
Great introduction 👍
Glad you liked it
@ooramusic how would you compare / contrast it with the OP-1F? Do you see them as complimentary or would you choose one of them over the other? I’m just curious how well they work together or if this replaces the OP-1F in every way, with the primary difference being tape vs sequencer.
i think they would complement really well. if i would pick one, being a sequencer person i would lean towards the xy. but the ambient textures you can get with op1 are unparalleled
Great video!
I don’t get why it has to cost that much.
Hipster tax 💁
it is priced (as all TE products) like that because it is not a tool for musicians, but people who buy into the quirky-hipster-jam-musician lifestyle. and like all luxury brands you buy to project an image, the more its products cost, the better the signaling. LVMH will probably buy them soon.
It is made by a boutique design company in Sweden and has tons of features and abilities. That’s why it cost so much.
@@robertjamesonmusic as far as features and abilities, I mean the SP404MK2 has sound modules now, and it’s $500. The Digitone 2 is less than half this price. Polyend just released a bad ass triple synth (yes I know it doesn’t have a sequencer) for $499 etc etc. This machine here doesn’t do anything new or special and it’s priced to kill. But I think their logic is that enough people will want to buy it just to say they have it, kind of like a Tesla truck. Good for them though. It’s working. I just won’t be buying one because I feel it’s unnecessary at that price when I have way more affordable options that do just as much.
@@heyyypatrickI think that polyend synth does have a sequencer actually. I’m probably getting one and def passing on this. I’ve had an opz for ages and thought I’d snatch up its successor in a minute, but the price is obscene.
This piece is for the creator who has money to spare. I think we all can agree this is not a starter piece, or a centerpiece. It is a want, 100%. Beautiful piece of gear, but no groundbreaking tech here to support the price. With that said- if you have the money and dig it, get it! If not, cool! No harm no foul.
lmao
agreed!
I think it _can_ be a centrepiece. Don't get me wrong, it's not for me - I don't want one myself. But with midi and CV out options, it can work with lots of external gear, as he says :)
Wow ! Great music, and really impressive instrument too !
Can you multitrack record into a daw with this thing or only master track?
07:50 I always loved the saturated colors of the OG-1. The OP-1f felt like a step down with it's dull and depressing color theme. The black/white theme feels a bit less depressing and more stylistically coherent, but I sure miss the colors a ton
Any ideas what the audio quality is? On op-1f it says “PRO QUALITY 32-BIT AUDIO THROUGHOUT THE SIGNAL CHAIN”. Can’t find anything for op-xy
I bet is the same
Wished they'd skipped using the OP-1 case and made it slightly larger, that would have killed.
@@nebula0697 Agree with both nebula dudes. lol
"inspired by the iconic, off-road subcultures of dance music all over the world" WTF does this even mean? 😂😂😂😬
Hipster speak. Basically out of their ass, doesn’t mean anything.
🤣 it's compulsory to term everything as 'iconic' these days.
For that campfire moment of the DJ, just needs a mobile PA.
Hey there, one question:
The external audio input, how good is the sampling/ looping workflow? integrating extrrnal synths/ vocals/ etc into your composition. As this thing sadly has no audio recording track, how long is the sampling time? Is there synced sampling start/ looping?
It’s like they are trrryyyinng to offend people with the price.
Do you have any thoughts on the workflow differences between these devices after having each of them for a while?
i personally can end with a nice loop on xy faster, but the dt has definitely a more convenient layout. time will
tell!
it sounds amazing
Oh look- exactly what my OP1-Field should have been. For an even higher cost…
lol
just got the op-1 field after having owned the og-1 but can you tell me why this is what the op-1 field shouldve been? isnt the workflow and stuff way different? sorry if im wrong i never used or understood the op-z
yeah pretty much a slap right in our faces. op1f has NO arranger only the tape and only one thing playing at once then you have this, pretty much everything you would want, minus like a single track of just audio.
@@havenloss8107 They began the OP-1 Field campaign with the slogan "This is just the beginning". Making us think major updates to the Field were on the way. They weren't. What was on the way was a bunch of stupidly expensive companion products that nobody was asking for
@@loftfive-p9kjust get both
This is definitely not hate and won't complain about the price, just a thought here. It seems like there should be something in between.
sometimes i dream too of a big interface, considering my hands are huge…
it's funny how they went from "band in a room let's cut directly to tape" OP-1 to this level of complexity.
Are you familiar with the pocket operators (2015) then OP-Z (2018) after the OP-1 (2010?)
Good stuff, well made, well design AND small, cost money.
amen 🖤
i can afford it, imma buy myself one, and i still think its expensive, so, no.
Wrong. I can afford it and already have a lot of TE stuff. But I think the price is too high. So I won't buy it just to not support this policy.
If they don’t ask you to make a “video”, how’d you know to release the video the second embargo was lifted?
Maybe bc I asked mate ....
@@Asyouwere OP was rude and accusatory first, but you're mad at the creator for being glib? This ain't an airport bud, you don't have to announce your departure
@@Asyouwere whatever you say Captain 🤡
@Asyouwere shall I quote your departure announcement for you? “I cannot support you anymore, I am sorry.”
@@Asyouwere oh so you're just here to sealion, got it 👍
op-xy can chop samples like any mpc?
Hey @OoraMusic, thanks for the vid man. Was curious about the background music around 6-7min mark , is it made with XY or no?
no that was actually made with my modular!
How is the sequencing workflow is it easy to operate for new users
it takes a minute to get honestly!
People, we are officially going round the bend.
aye aye
Thanks Oora, trying to figure out if this makes sense for my tastes. Do you think it’s suitable for non-beat based music like dark ambient, drone, Berlin school, lofi synthwave, stuff like that?
i feel this shine with rhythm
This video makes me want one , best yet
I swear nothing makes grown men whine like teenage engineering. Yall need to look inward.
im gonna pin this comment 😂
yeah, I mean everything isn't for everyone! I'd love an Eventide H9000, I'm not going to spend $8k but I'm not angry at them for making it.
"Men"? That's a stretch when you're talking about synth nerds.
at what price point would it not be whining to you anymore? 3k? 4k?
Good for you. You enjoy making great music with it.
I appreciate that!
Always the best gear from them they are amazing
love their stuff too
After this video, I’m actually tempted to get one now.
TE is getting glazed more than a krispy kreme
Video idea: feel free to edit and cut it together, but do a video teaching your mum to make synth music on OP-XY :)
NOT EVEN IN MY WORST NIGHTMARE!!
@@OoraMusic haha :)
Damn this thing is gorgeous. Price is a bit insane but YOLO am I right boys?!
Aw hell yea brudder
@@scamculture blasphemy.
Looks GREAT!!!
Well, If you can afford it, and like the product, why not? Life is short.
It’s really not that inspiring. Surprising tbh. The graphics are cool though, imo the op-1 graphics are cooler
We could easily buy a push 3 standalone or a mpc x for this price or less… or two elektron boxes ? This better be insanely, wildly inspiring
It's not
heavy...
you showed me the Perfourmer, I fell in love with it right away and got it, the same happened after I watched your videos on Perkons and OXI, but this OP-XY is not worth the price for me, its too small and too many combo grips.
not sure if this is for me but thanks for your insight oora 🙌
Now that I am more into synths it is confusing about why it is priced the way it is. It’s super portable which is cool. But for that price you could literally get a set up that probably meets the individuals tastes a little bit better.
They have their own price policy, nothing we can do about that, nor we should. There are plenty of other instruments, luckily!
it's beautiful. but that price is making it unavailable for me sadface. btw the screen is defo colour, because you have the orange indicator for the recording and if i'm not mistaken there are some subtle tints of colour in some of the animations. great vid as always!
you can do most of the thing with the op-z tho!
Being delivered this Wed 🎉🎉
sounds amazing ..
:)
would love to see some CV/Gate out to that minimoog in the back
coming soon
the screen is in color, as can be seen from the red numbers that appear at the beginning.
I think TE wanted to keep the grayscale because the machine is black.
Love it mate!!!
Thanks Nadia🖤
Is the sampling very Lofi bit rate or hifi?
I have to dig into that !
With this price people can buy an M4 MacBook Pro :)
The people who buy this probably already have that new MacBook Pro too
including Logic Pro ;)
@ exactly my point 😎🫠
You guys are missing the point of a well made, portable music device this powerful, with an amazing battery. I have tried them all, and the OP-1f is the best. Unfortunately, the workflow on that machine leaves a lot to be desired. This looks so much better.
@ you hit it spot on. I originally was an OP 1 field hater because of the price and all of its limitations. The thing is you kinda need to be a good musician to be good at the OP 1 which I now appreciate after buying the OP 1 field recently. I already have a DAW and midi keyboard to do all the fancy stuff. I have no regrets. Trying to sell my op z now so I can upgrade 😎
Thanks!
thanks for your support
OPXY is incredible
agreed
It is portable, but no Headphone out?
😊 I have to admit… this thing looks f*ing rad! And you Federico make it sound awesome. But the price! Will I get one? Probably, but I’ll need to save up or sell some stuff for that one. Yikes! Great job sir! One of a kind.
15:55 the step component implementation sounds so good...
:)
The op-xy checks most boxes. I was in love until I heard the price. So many other options at that price point.
Fucking brilliant. I really want one.
OP-1 has multiple sequencers. Can't say it is the "introduction of sequencers in OP platform".
Not to mention OP-Z...
The recording was red on the screen, so definitely a color screen.
damn, of course :D
wow. red. fun
Wait! Wait! Are ya saying TE finally figured out that we ALL love sequencers?
:D
I don't understand. Literally most of their devices are based around sequencing. Even the OP-1(f) has, albeit primitive, sequencers, but is the only one that puts a non-sequenced workflow in the spotlight.
You mean other than the whole range of countless pocket operators and the OP-Z?
As a main workflow.
@@DetroitMicroSound Yes. Most devices by TE have sequencers as their main workflow.
Those James are fire 🔥 I know there’s negative comments about “click bait” or not putting negative things in your videos about projects, but enough other videos do that already. Keep making videos like this because it works for you, don’t worry about it man. 👍 yes this thing is overpriced, but it’s also TE, cost was never in mind anyways.
Appreciate that
I agree. Just let him tell us about his own experiences with it. He isn't aiming to sell it to us, and he was upfront enough about the details at the start.
I like this workflow more than the op1
