Paddle Your Surfboard Faster & Longer | The Correct Technique & Practice Exercises

  • How to surf and how to paddle. You can't do one without the other because proper paddling technique enables you to move throughout the line up in order to optimise your position for catching waves. Can't paddle? Don't expect to catch many waves.
If you watch any professional surfer in real life, one of the first things you'll notice is how quickly and efficiently they paddle through the water. This technique is a fundamental tool which allows them to catch more waves and, eventually, become better surfers.
In today's video I go through some really helpful analogies and practice exercises you can use to help your paddling. It's something that's come up a lot lately when I've been coaching people - their ability to paddle is not up to scratch and hinders them from improving at a reasonable rate.
Remember, the majority of a session is negotiating the ocean BETWEEN waves, not actually catching them, so our ability in this area is SO IMPORTANT!
Remember to subscribe to the channel, develop some smooth bananas, and follow me on Insta @kalesbroccoli
You could also leave a comment with what else you wana' see on the show!

Hi mate, a wee question as to how far you should lift, I usually just have my pecs clear, but I can pull up so it's kinda the bottom of my ribs that are last bit touching the board ? Tho that starts my lower back aching... basically can you lift/bend to far

Anyone planning to take beginner surf lessons should start swimming Australian Crawl - head up freestyle - for several weeks before their vacation so they don't get tired and sore on the first day of paddling. You'll get way more out of the lessons if you're prepared with both the strength/endurance for paddling and the banana arch posture.

Sorry I'm about a year late! But one all-around workout that is excellent and extremely beneficial when you're out in the water are deadlifts. Deadlifts work every muscle in your body - ESPECIALLY the erector muscles in the back. Deadlifts may seem intimidating for some but don't be! Start with just the bar, then slowly add more weight as your body gets used to it.
I should also add, one doesn't need to lift heavy weights in order to be a good surfer, the more time you spend out in the water - the more you work and build up the primary muscles used for surfing!

if you don't mind me adding. I believe the head up (banana) also gets you to lay up towards the front of the board just enough to get the nose under the water. when you get in the banana position, your weight goes back towards your knees and brings the nose up a little and gets you planing better across the water. body position in the board is kinda the most important thing

"Erect banana". Ill use that next time i talk to wahine. Lol!
It would be good to talk about the chin down power paddling when you need to get the nose down. I think the erect banana is good when the waves are hollow and pitchy, but sometimes you need to put your chin down to paddle hard when the wave is mushy.
Beginners also tend to paddle with their legs splayed open. Knees should be close together and thighs on the board. Spreading your legs allows the tail to lift up and causes nose dives. Dont split the erect banana, lol!

I'm not on shape im gonna go paddle my ass out to the reef tomorrow and 3 days a week until the day comes... there is a wave here that is truly world class but maybe happens twice a year and is seriously life threatening high consequence. That couple with a complete lack of EMS and medical infrastructure make it no joke...thats been my excuse the last couple of years that and no one else is down for it like i keep telling myself i am... im calling it march or April its going to happen and im going to be ready to sit behind that peak and be the first person to backdoor and slay that monster to do so my banana will need to be rock hard...ok I'm done

Hi Guys, I've been surfing for around 55 years. This past decade I've had 2 Lumbar (lower back) surgeries and I had my second Cervical (neck) fusion a month ago. I'm looking forward to getting back into the water in several months, this summer, when the water warms up. I'm not sure if I've have so many spinal problems due to poor techniques in paddling, etc. or just years of bad judgement on pulling in on too many closeouts. Many sessions my best waves are the ones I didn't think I could make.....Anyway, I enjoy your tips and I'm looking forward to many more years of short boarding. Your point of getting a long board our through the surf is very true. I'll stick with duck diving a short board. Aloha !

Long boards are very different across the board. I mean some are like guns that are just like duck diving a shortboard punching through. Then there is the turtle roll which works well, every longboarder should practice it along with controlling the longboard after with retracting the leash quickly if you loose your board that way you don't tie up the lineup. Huge difference between a 10'8 old school heavy tanker and a 8'8 firewire...

@Kale Brock I just started surfing and when i was paddling i had some neck pain. do you think that's just from not holding my neck properly when paddling?

Thanks, that was really helpful. Can you show us how to turn left and right? When I river surfed at the Vague a Guy river rapid bunny wave, firstly, I could not stay on my surf board due to the rapids and 2, I could not paddle fast and my back hurt. Had to take Advil for a week. One day I will get a real surf in a real ocean, but due to Covid, I have no choice but try to practice in my city🙏🇨🇦🌈🌎🦋🌺🏄‍♀️

Question about longer, long-boards. How come when catching larger waves one seems to need to flick their legs up right at that moment before you know you got it, to catch it? 'Before pop up'
Stronger paddling, deeper paddling, s-paddling doesn't help, just makes one ride the top of it longer before missing it. Don't have this problem with boards under 8'6". :T
Setup: 9'8" Pintail, 8.5" Truemes classic center w/3.5" Truemes side bites.

I injured my shoulder paddling. Hi, I'm a new surfer. I'm 21 5'10 and 170 pounds lean build. I haven't been surfing too long, just on and off the last month. And randomly last week I got bad shoulder pain, and hurt to lift it or lift anything. I believe I got what's called Surfers or swimmers shoulder. I watched this video before learning to surf and I guess I'm doing something wrong. A friend of mine thinks I'm not activating my back maybe enough and relying on my shoulders too much.
Any thoughts are welcome, I want to continue to learn to surf, but I don't want to get injured and be inactive again. Especially cause that's all I am during this quarantine. ( My shoulder feels better now but I'm not sure when I could start using it again).

Respect from the Med lad how you doin'?
Any advice on shoulder positioning.. lots of surfers are getting tendons pinched which leads to injuries down the line..

kales, any thoughts on paddling with knees bent vs knees on the board (like in this video)? I've had instructors insist on knees bent (lower leg at 90 degrees, feet in air)

    • @nonow1353
      @nonow1353 ปีที่แล้ว

Years later, but my guess would be these instructors had you on a longboard yes? If thats the case then yeah that can make sense gets your weight better positioned etc but if you are riding a performance short board its not really practical

Hey Kales, I realy enjoy watching your videos. The tips help me a lot to improve my surfing. I have a question to the reverse plank you show in the video: Doing this, my muscles in the sacral region hurt afterwards. I think that´s not right, right? What am I doing wrong? :( Where should my energy in my body be when doing the exercise? Greetings from Germany!

    • @KalesBroccoli

The activation should be in the middle back - focus on turning the thumbs upward :)

When waves are firing & solid, i only seem to have about an hour of paddling energy, which can be frustrating!

Some people run marathons, some are sprinters. Ultimately you have a fitness level possibility. You can improve to your genetic potential. Surfing is a mix of different fitness components. Go to a good Strength and Conditioning Coach and get some correct training protocols. If you're going to use a Personal Trainer because you cannot track down an athlete coach, use one who has a good track record (over 10 years perhaps).

I just want to know what to do when caught in the impact zone by a head high++ set. How to survive. What action to take to avoid getting roughed up or worse. I hate paddling out and usually end up ditching my board and swimming for it and getting dragged back by the leash.

Jason Temple the muscle activation should be more in the middle back not the lower - so it shouldn’t flare any injuries ideally if done correctly
