I worked in hospital administration for years, and I was friends with the food service and environmental services staff. I always said that the hospital could run fine without the CEO, but couldn't manage without the janitors and kitchen staff. Yeah.

Very true. I worked in a British military hospital as a cleaner, there was a dedicated team of us, we were looked down on as being ‘only cleaners.' Every week there would be a COs inspection, no one knew in advance where he would pick for a very close inspection. Our immediate boss told us if you stopped working this place would shut in three days. I’m guessing if the cookhouse had stopped working it would be in hours. The ironic thing was many of us were qualified in other professions, but needs must. I NEVER look down on cleaners, refuse collectors or similar workers, without them we would be up to our eyes in muck and rubbish sooner than most people realise.

My mother worked for years at a high school as the custodian, and she was the person you went to if you needed something there. Even stuff that most people might ask a teacher for, because half the time the teachers would ask her. She was so loved by the time that she retired that the students pissed off a LOT of teachers by dedicating the yearbook to HER rather than a teacher. (The students knew they could trust her. She found ways to make sure that some of the kids who couldn't afford lunches had something to eat. She's still ornery in her early 80s, but it's a lovable ornery.)

Story2: Oh man this is giving me nightmare/flashbacks from my call-center days. One time some nasty B of a woman called in about her boyfriend's overdue account, absolutely incensed that we sent him to collections. Her exact words: "It obviously isn't a priority for us to pay, so why do you keep bothering us??" After some more back and forth, I lost my patience and snapped "Did you think the company was going to be generous?" She got pissed and spat some insult, but I wasn't even listening at that point. I doubt I would have had as much patience as OP did.

A building exploding - "that rarely happens". Well, it CAN happen when an organisation that deals with clients has to tell them NO. Many years ago I worked for such an organisation. An irate client in one of our branch offices decided he did not like that NO, and decided to blow up their building. Well, he tried. Part of the building had an open area underneath for parking spaces, and that part was on pillars. He used an explosive on a pillar with the intention of bringing that part of the building down - to rain building parts and people onto all those cars and crushing them.
Because he was a fool as well as a tool, he didn't use enough explosive and/or didn't place it correctly, so he only managed to cause relatively minor damage to the building. Presumably there were surveillance cameras that caught him in the deed because he was caught quite quickly. And all this because he got into a snit when he didn't get what he wanted. Some people are just thorough AHs. And yes, the organisation did bring up more security measures to protect staff from such vengeful AHs.

It's actually a nice place, except for the traffic around Boston.
We moved to the Cape a couple of years ago-pretty nice.
Yes, taxes are high in a dollar basis, but incomes are higher.
On a per Capita income basis, we rank like 42nd for lowest taxes.
Also, supermarket type food and clothing are nontaxable, which can make a big difference to low income folks. I think Mississippi taxes groceries along with some other states, which I find unconscionable.

The story of the lunch break is why I always leave the building when I go on my unpaid hour time waste. I've been at the job for 10 years and have been taking my daily hour naps for about 9 of those years. There have been a handful of people that I gave my number to so they could text me in case something happens but that's it.

The restart lunch rule is state law in many states. Check with your states labor board. You can usually find out online. Also remember-wage theft by employers is one of the biggest crimes going. If you are forced to work unpaid overtime, document it as best you can ( like take a pic of the time clock with your phone to prove you are still at work) you can file a claim with the labor board for up to 3 years after the occurrence, meaning you can collect when you leave.

I have respect for the ones that do work, not so much for the phone people or the hiding people. If one of my employees was playing with their phone instead of working, they would get a warning. The second time they would get fired. Some places actually have employees leave their phone in their locker, or some other place if the lockers were not secure. We ALL got along without phones for many years! If you can't go a shift without looking at your phone, perhaps you need to be unemployed. Then when you can't pay for said phone, you will be able to break your phone addiction.
There have been people, close to where I live, killed because they were trying to text and drive at the same time. Is it really that important that you have to answer the text with another text, while go 80 MPH on the freeway?

I broke up with a gf. She came to internal affairs and complained that I wouldn't date her anymore. IA capt calls me in, confronts me with the allegation. I told him it had nothing to do with my work . He threatened me with " conduct non becoming". I told him I did not want to be part of the problem but rather part of the solution and that a few years prior 5 other employees had been involved in a scandal having sex with a reporter. I would assist him in that investigation and we could clean up the department. I knew he was one of those involved. I promised to seek their names and as I was going to be fired I would have time to contact their wives and get this rolling. I was not married but he was. I told him to let me know when my hearing would be and I'll get started on the other investigation immediately. As I was walking out he said no you can't do that and ordered me not to. Still walking out I just yelled to him that as soon as I get information I would contact him.
Never heard another word from him.

Janitors, not only would you be buried in your trash without them, they handle your dirty business on a daily basis and have keys to everything.
IT, they can and probably do know everything you do on your computer even when you think they can't the know a way around, and they have easy access to every document the company and it's employees generate if the Janitors don't.
Security, depending o. Their range of duty they can make it impossible to get into a building and do your job- and they usually play friendly with IT and the Janitors. Screw them and they can ask their friends for a favor.

Last year was the best year however, there was a rather large Latino lady that was there working with her husband and 4 daughters ranging age from 19-26. I told the lady that she and her daughters were the hardest workers I had and after that, she made lunch and dinner for me every day and man, could she cook. She even tried to get me to date and marry one of her daughters. She didn't care which one lol. The husband wasn't as hardworking as the women but he was one of the best male workers I had that year. Nice family, I hope they come back.

If you ARE a manager, you would have no respect from me, and as any manager knows, the workers can get the managers fired.
In a job I had for several years, I would work through my lunch from time to time, but, It was my choice to do so. I would also add a half hour of O/T for doing it. Everyone ended up happy. These big box stores are super petty about O/T.
