    Yeh that's a diversity hire. Hiring someone for a position that they do not have the qualification for based on gender, race, religion, or sexual orientation is the Websters definition of diversity hire. If people were offended by your term they should pull their heads out of their behinds. Usually a hire for a position to manage PHD's is at minimum a Masters, with a PHD holder being the prefered candidate. Someone with only a BS, or BA is not qualified so you would have to hire them as a diversity hire to be able to hire them over a qualified candidate to reduce your chance of being subject to a law suite.

    The first story: This is why you NEVER hire based on ethnicity, gender or religion, you hire based on experience, work ethic & character.

    You’d be surprised how many people assume north = Canada. On a trip in the early 00s to nyc on the way back I told my aunt not to go north(we were coming across the rainbow bridge). She wasn’t from the area and just assumed I was wrong. Living pretty close to the border I could navigate that area with my eyes closed. She took us on a huge detour and eventually had to admit she was wrong and turn around.
    This was before smart phones and with printed google maps, so we couldn’t just look it up on the fly.

    Hate to tell the commenters on the first story that are "offended" at the term diversity hire(hard to find people who aren't offended at something these days! ) but that's what people like the new hire, manager whatever name you put on it, were called at the time the story took place. It's why companies now have to label all job posts and workplaces Equal Opportunity Employers.

    • @Kevin7557
      @Kevin7557 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      We still call them that. That is the business term for it.

    • @raeishimura
      @raeishimura 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      It really is still a diversity hire. I hate to tell those folks, but when you try to force an increase in diversity in a field, you end up with companies not hiring the most qualified people for the job, but instead hiring to meet a diversity quota. That's literally where the term comes from. And honestly, as a person of a minority (Native American), I HATE those diversity quotas. Like, with a passion. Because I can't take a job without wondering if I was actually the best person for the job or if I was just hired because of my skin color. I'm almost always the only Native applying, so I always feel like that is the only reason I get a job. I wish those diversity quotas had never happened so I would know if I got a job, I really was the one who deserved it, and not feel like I was just the diversity hire who might actually be the dumbest guy in the place.

    • @dlpacres4718
      @dlpacres4718 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@raeishimura I hate those quotas as well because of what you stated. They're not fair mostly to those who they're meant to help. You just have to own your skills and know your worth. Don't ever question your knowledge. The one thing no one can take away from you is your knowledge. Please don't ever underestimate yourself. If you feel that you're qualified enough to apply, then you're qualified enough to be in that position.

  • @karlrovey

    This is related to the second story. Just like Detroit is North of part of Canada, not all of Illinois is actually east of the Mississippi. Kaskaskia Island is accessible by land from the Missouri side of the river, but not from the Illinois side. Napoleon basically wanted to start from Perryville, drive up to St. Louis on I-55 and cross into Illinois, and take route 3 south. Cross back over at Chester and get to the island, but on a much larger scale.

    Story1: There's plenty of fail to go around here. Miss-manager was certifiable, but OP's dad picking unnecessary fights with her, what did he think was going to happen? On that note, assigning a fresh out of college greenhorn to manage people with 10-20 years xp?* Who thought this was a good idea?? And having only one person with knowledge of the super special algorithm? Single point of failure much? Doesn't seem like anybody at that company thought anything through.
    *I'm reminded of my own job, where I was tasked to train up 2 people. Both of whom had 15-20 years with the company, where I was just a contractor with barely 6 months there. I'm not a rookie in my line of work, but still I was worried they'd resent some outsider like me telling them what to do. Thankfully they were both cool dudes.

    THe 700mi/10h trip seems a bit far fetched for something you can do in a good 2h30, pitstops excluded.

    Pretty sure diversity hire was just the wrong term for what he described. Diversity hires are often described/derided as being incompetent but hired because they ticked some boxes so that a company can say "Hey, look! We aren't racist/sexist/etc.!" but diversity hiring just looks to remove any biases from the hiring process that might otherwise disadvantage people from some groups *who are otherwise qualified for a position.* This person... was not very good at managing and had minimal skill in the field they were to oversee. Why they were hired is beyond me.
