- The thirty-third episode of Boss Analysis.
The Revenge of Shinobi is one of the oldest and most beloved games on the Genesis or Mega Drive. But like many games with ninjas, it can be difficult from time to time. I wouldn't be surprised if modern day ninjas used it for their training.
Rather than giving into weaknesses and accepting all the help the game gives me, though, I've decided to do the exact opposite to answer the question I had: Is it possible to beat each of the eight bosses with the bare minimum? This means...
No shurikens
No special Jitsu
No Pow upgrade
All Joe Musashi has at his disposal to overcome his deadliest foes is a short-range knife and a kick. I believe that no boss from any game should become unbeatable if you go up against them in the worst possible situation and was curious to see if this game didn't fall into the same trap as my much-hated Buebeam Trap from Mega Man 2.

Star shaped weapons = Shurikens
Knife shaped weapons = Kunais
Just to clarify.
i think he knows that, he just calls them shurikens because the game does.

Also the first boss has an odachi, not a katana.
In reality kunais were more used as a crowbar, the knives were called tantogata shuriken

Karyu (火龍) is Japanese for "Fire Dragon"
Fushin (浮身) is Japanese for "Floating Body"

Shinobi games are known to have references to pop culture. The original Shinobi game had Spider Man and Marilyn Monroe, with probably more.
With all these weird translation and spelling errors, I'm going to guess that "Kariu" was meant to be "Karyu/Ka-ryu" which makes more sense as that translates as "Fire Dragon"

You just gotta applaud Git for putting himself through actual torture to make us videos, like naked alucard and this. These things aren't easy and they show how dedicated he is. Great job Git. (also no jutsus OR pow upgrades, i couldnt even beat the game without them.)

I never got far with this game, so imagine my surprise when later on in life I found out that the later bosses were Spider Man, Batman, Terminator, and freaking GODZILLA was in the game.
I also found out that Yuzo Koshiro composed the OST for this game, who would then go on to do the Street of Rage series.
Oh, and the 'you died' tune used to freak me out back then too.

Yes, those Gaiden chapters were just dumb. I never got Shadow Dragon's Gaiden chapters. Evidently IntSys realized they were a dumb idea, as New Mystery of the Emblem gives you both the characters from these chapters (Athena, Horace, Etzel, Ymir and Nagi) alongside everyone from the previous game still showing up, and instead bases their side chapter goals on more traditional "get Kris to level 3 promoted" or "beat this level within x turns".
LPArchive's run made a second run on Normal for these, and justified it as Jagen making up an embellished story where he was actually the main hero. It was funny.
Anyway. Minotaur and Blue Lobster. Cage match.
This Shadow Dancer is also not a prestige class for Rogues.

There aren't many games I enjoy enough to challenge myself with a basics run like this, but I have done an NSG (no sphere grid) run of Final Fantasy X and mono-class challenges for Final Fantasy Tactics.
Wold you say you enjoyed any of the GBA/DS Castlevanias enough to try something similar with them? No equipment Shanoa would be very... hard.
Maybe, I might go a step further with Dawn of Sorrow.

I wonder if the developers tested beating the bosses this way....probably. Also fun fact- in Shinobi 3 one of the bosses is Mechagodzilla. The official name of the Final Boss in this game is “The Ninja Master”. That’s why Shinobi 3:Return of the Ninja Master is called that. You fight him in that game too, he returned.

I'm pretty positive the version i played when i was a kid wasn't the one with Batman and Godzilla.
Spiderman, either becomes Devil Man or Batman... Neither or these is ever something you want to see Spiderman turn into, especially if you are fighting against him. I mean the quipping wall-crawler is enough, making him turn into the super-rich, terrifyingly determined, trained by master assassins, modern ninja or the demon who only Lucifer himself managed to kill - that's just way to fricking much...

really tho DXC is pretty faithful to Rondo, but does make some changes to the level design, however i myself do prefer rondo for the vibrant colors and the synthesized soundtrack, the drab look in some areas definitely hurts the experience for me in what's supposed to be a vibrant, colorful area to traverse, while the soundtrack is still pretty good i feel it's rather bland, but it does let you select the songs for levels when you find them but as for the actual level design it holds up pretty well since again, it's almost a 1-1 conversion of Rondo
i'm also one of those guys who finds SotN horrendously overrated. is it a good game? yeah. best in the igavania lineup? hell no. there's a lot of issues that bug me, like reload time when you die, or how long alucard's knockback lasts on top of how little mercy invincibility he has, not having one would forgive the other's presence, i could go on if you really want me to
@HicksZ34: the flaws i mentioned are definitely not minor if it holds your attention for dozens of hours
for one, save point placement, SotN is horrendous in this regard and contender for worst in the series, let me remind you that these games force you to wait a few seconds which take you to the title screen, then you have to reload your save which also takes a while, and any progress you lost up to that point is gone. there is no save in the clock tower, something that, thankfully, cannot be said of the other games.
two, Portrait of Ruin and Order of Ecclesia break up areas, giving you a chance to go back to a safe area and save, which are more lenient, though i personally would just checkpoint at the start of areas so you would at least have a restart option
three, the general combat feels better, i did a level 1 mistless run and i can talk for hours about how much i hate death and dracula (ESPECIALLY dracula), the bosses are either cheap or far too easy (mostly the latter) while i feel the later games aren't perfect, have a better balance to your arsenal as well as, for the most part, better design on the enemies and their placement

okay so it's not that hard but if you get hit even once GOOD LUCK GETTING OUT you will die and at the nearest save room it will take you about 3 minutes of backtracking just to get back i wouldn't think of playing this game without savestates just for that
you have to throw food on the floor or wait 10 seconds for a freaking potion to take effect, and yeah everyone's complained about it but i'm still bringing it up
and everyone's also complained about the inverted castle
honestly i played SotN a lot around when i was a kid and it was my only Castlevania for a time and i loved it, but the game just falls apart the more and more i look at it, thankfully that hasn't been the case in two areas, there's not a lot of story but i love it, and the music is awesome

Aaaargh, it's so good to know this game was as jank as I thought it was. 6 year old me could only ever make it to 2-1...sometimes...barely. And I couldn't even get past that first platform.

Very nice strat for the last boss. You should check my ancient no-damage run Shinobi video, it has a few different strategies that you might find interesting (like a faster way to kill the brain boss, the Spiderbat and a cool showcase of how incredibly powerful the POW can really be.. like, really, REALLY powerful). Yeah, it's good stuff. Yuzo Koshiro made this game's music and went on to compose Streets of Rage, and while I never really cared for its soundtrack, the tunes in this game are a jam!!

The developer that created Shadow Dancer boss fight clearly didn't think in the people with eplepsy

@@yowch1081 That's (probably) due to the way flatscreen TVs work. Between every frame there's a flash of solid white. Your eyes can't normally see it, but I guess it could trigger epileptic reactions.

final boss, looks like the ability from that one, game, where your appearnce kinda of changes to that, but a kabuki mask sort of, and you swing your hair around like that, damaging anything it touches, probably the best ability in that game?

Think of the mijin spell as self-destruct/explosion 💥 from the pokemon video game franchise(you end up doing damage to the opponent at the cost of 1 pokemon)
My only guess is the devs thought they changed the likeness of the heroes enough to avoid copyright but it wasn't enough. Marvel thought it was a good enough joke to leave it in but dc demanded the change. Thats the only logical conclusion that makes sense to me

I think the story is that the company making Shinobi technically had the licenses for Spider-Man and Batman at the time, and figured they could just use them freely as cameos.
Uh, they could not. But I guess Marvel didn't care enough to make them radically change anything.
