Tips for Installing a Backup Camera in a Pickup Truck: Xtreme XBC6 in a F150

Having an older pickup truck doesn’t mean we can’t enjoy the advantages of a backup camera. Whether aligning a trailer receiver with the truck hitch or parking, a backup camera is very useful to have in a pickup truck. Shown is Xtreme model XBC6 being installed in a 2000 F150.

Thank you for showing how you ran the wiring through the floor under the carpet. I watched a lot of videos trying to figure out how to get from the interior of the cab to the undercarriage and you were the first person I found who showed that step. I still need to wire the camera to the taillight, but I'm hopeful that I'll be able to get it all hooked up.

I see that he pulls the wire through the floor. This may sound dumb, but my directions say to hook up cam above my f150’s lic plate. Do I just run my wires through my license plate light holes then bring the wire under the undercarriage and then up through my floorboard??

Why did you ground to the tail light and not to the frame?

He ground it to the ground that runs from the taillight into the frame.

Hate how some of you take a solid connection and cut it in half. Just to splice it back with a butt connector. Tap into it, you don’t have to cut it...now when that connection gets old and his reverse light it out...

I tried a provided in line splice and it didn't work. The wire in the kit is 21 gauge and the back-up wire is 16. A splice designed for a 16 will make a poor and unusable connection on a 21 wire. Hence the butt splice used

Nice! I’ve got a Ford truck too, but it’s a 2009 Ranger FX4 Off-Road. Can’t figure out a spot to run the camera cable into the cab. The extended cab door on the driver’s side had a door release cable mess up, so it would be hard to remove the trim like you did. May have to talk to my mechanic & see what he’d charge for installation. Hopefully not too much. I’ve gone to him for 29 years come this July!

I ran mine under the trim and just put a hole under the trim in the rear door.

Three years later, how is the butt connector splice holding up? About to do this to my truck and same problem, the camera wiring is much smaller than for the tail light.

It held up fine. These kits all seem to use the same 22ga wire that makes for issues with automotive-type splices.

So apparently this same thing happened to me, I connected it using the red plastic thing but it doesn’t give power to the camera even though is the correct wire. I guess I’ll have to cut and join them

Those wires are so small (22 gauge) that a standard splice will not work.
