For us Greeks, it's really funny to see how foreigners go crazy for Greek food. All those items, like pies, koulouri, souvlaki, capuccino freddo etc., are part of our everyday life. We don't think of them as anything special. 🙂

"...and salty." That's when you drink ouzo. Ouzo goes best with salty food. And yes, iced Coffee is really the Greek contribution to the global coffee culture and it is *a m a z i n g.* It's like *rediscovering* coffee. I remember traveling in Italy (Italians know coffee!) decades ago and the knew nothing of iced coffee. Later I realized that *practically* only Greeks drunk iced coffee.

Kostas Souvlaki store is one of the VERY MOST POPULAR in the center of Greek Capitol!
It's a TINY store, very narrow, barelly can stand 4-5 people in there... and there is a line of 40+ people outside waiting to get Kostas' famous souvlaki!!!
Its an Athens' spot you CAN'T MISS, it's crime not go there!
OUZO is not supposed to drink it like that, fellas - directly from the bottle!
OUZO is been served in LONG thin glass, with ice cube or cold water - you never drinking it "solid" (without water or/and ice), is WAY too strong!

Koulourades in Katw patisia region near train station in Athens has the best koulouri and different too next time on Greece you should try pastitsio thats like lazania only mutch better personaly i dont like lazania other Greek dishes to try laxanontolmades and magiritsa are some of my favourite dishes.
45 min for Κώστα it's worth it.
It's the best souvlaki in Athens.
O Κώστας in Syntagma its a different store and they serve kalamaki or mpifteki just like Κώστα in Monastiraki but they put in yogurt instead of the red sauce.

The houses are too close to one another and it is too crowded for me. Molly I know you are a smart lady. There was no need for you to say it so loud. I'm visiting Athens soon, I'm kind of concerned because most of the food/meat is pork. Are there more alternatives?
It’s a huge city you’ll be able to get lots of alternatives
If you go to a gyro/kebab shop then yes, it's all meat but if you go to any taverna, restaurant or bakery there's lots of of vegetarian & vegan dishes, also lots of fish restaurants and excellent vegan cafes. Just give the kebab shops a miss and you'll be fine

BS Kostas (never heard of him) Before the German euro 2001 souvlaki (even Kostas propably) costed 80-100 drs = 25 cents. Cheese or Spinach pie 15 drs 2-3 cents.Koulouri costed 1 drs Imagine the difference.Real Souvlaki never had french fries in it.
When you visit another country, search for the places locals eat at. Avoid crowded squares, fast-food chains, and criers. Quality food only needs mouth to mouth advertising...
For food tours Thessaloniki would have been even better. For food quality once you hit Thessaly and all areas north of it have the best food quality. Athens and the south not as good.
Every one prefer Athens for everything even from your place , stop to be so jealous ;)
@vogiatzisa you have it backwards I defend Athens to everyone I meet. I always say it's underrated. Outside of Greece Athens has a horrible reputation. For food no one I have met inside of Greece tells me Athens is the best. My experience agrees with this assessment.

actually, for traditional greek food, the best food is outside of athens (but not tourist destinations, dont get me wrong places like mykonos santorini etc that are well known turist atractions do have great food, but the best food is at small villages far from greece. And you are wrong about south greece, It does have good food. Also, if you do go for food in Athens, never visit the places that are filled with tourists. Always go to the places that the locals visit. Locals know where the good stuff is. 90% of the time, all the tourists visit "tourist traps" that make them pay x2-x3 the normal price and arent event that good compared to where the locals go. If you cant find places the locals visit, you can simply just go and ask locals(not kids, like at least 20-25+ years old) and they will tell you where to go and what to try
