You are right, otherwise every lock would have to be drilled out when the owner doesn't return. There's always lies behind this stuff.Edit: Watch YT:" New twist in case of deposit box theft" (spoiler- its a bank crime)

I worked for a nationwide bank for 20 years. The customer gets 2 keys when they rent the box. The bank does not have any customer keys. The bank has guard keys that have to be used in conjunction with the customer's key. Some banks have gone to 1 key opening. The customer key will open the lock, no guard key needed.

I had a strange experience with my bank almost 20 years ago. I had a safety deposit box there and paid the fee in February for the year. I took the receipt with me. Sometime later, I got a notice saying my fee had not been paid, and my box would be drilled. I took my receipt back to the bank, and they made a copy and said it was all taken care of. Later on, I got another letter. I took that receipt to the bank 4 times to prove the fee had been paid. After the 4th time, they promised me their records were accurate and everything was fine with my box. About a month later, I got another letter telling me my box had been drilled and the contents moved to the downtown branch. To say I was mad was an understatement! I went downtown and picked up my stuff. It had all been inventoried, and everything I remembered appeared to be there. I took my things with me, and on the way out closed out my accounts with that bank for good! To this day I wonder what they were looking for.

    • @Silent_Shadow

Disgusting behaviour by your 1st bank experience. They did not inform the record’s department of head office. Then again it does sound shonky of banks not to guarantee the contents of the boxes. They may record 24/7/365 but unfortunately footage is only kept for 30 to 60 days. Have you ever tried to watch footage? It's a bitch to find what you're looking for if you don't know when it happened. Regardless, the bank should offer insurance to everyone "included" in the rental price.

It has to be someone really high up. It can't be opened without both the customer and banks key. Someone who has access to the keys the customer is giving had to of made a copy of the keys and had time to put them back. It shouldn't be to hard to figure out who has access to those restricted keys. A standard bank teller can't just go and grab those keys. A bank manager comes with you and unlocks it then leaves the room to give you privacy. There's only a few people in the bank who can pull this off.

Also there are automatic lockpicks used by law enforcement and government agents that have been around for decades. You can show ID and get a replacement key. The lock isn’t replaced; there are dupes of all the keys at the bank. They give you a new one and then order a spare to keep on hand. So, 1 fake ID later, and boom, you're in. Could've been a fam member years ago when IDs were easier to fake.
The bank can also move your stuff to a new box. Our small hometown bank was acquired by a big corp bank, and they 'upgraded' all the safety deposit boxes. (Read, inventoried contents and made the standard size smaller so they could rent more boxes in the same amount of space.) We got a letter that you could come in by a certain date, or they'd do it on their own. We went in of course.
But if another box holder found this woman's stuff mixed in with her own, someone f'd up big time.

Are they suppose to give me $6 million? They have no clue what you put in your box.... it's a secret storage. And, the bank probably prohibits cash in a safety deposit box anyway, most do. Secondly we are assuming that this bank actually supervised those visiting the safety deposit boxes. If they’re indemnified from all liability for theft then it doesn’t really matter if they do a good job or not because they can’t be sued. Being that this story was aired on TV had there been a rash of thefts we probably would have heard about it. Most importantly a thief doesn’t want family photos, hence why were they also missing.

And just a little "food for thought" I've read online.... that, after the contents are inventoried from the safe deposit box, the contents are then placed in a "General Vault" at THAT Bank. After a time....I don't know how much time....BUT....the contents, BY LAW??? are THEN forwarded to YOUR STATE....AS "UNCLAIMED PROPERTY." You MAY have to send documents to prove an old address. MAYBE a piece of mail...ANYTHING to prove that you had THAT ADDRESS at some point. YOUR BANK MAY even have something with your old address...even IF it was EONS AGO. Me, personally, I've received CHECKS...RECENTLY ...even EONS LATER....small checks from old deposits....even an OLD card insurance policy from 20 YEARS AGO.. old refunds and stuff. I typed my name for MY STATE....UNCLAIMED PROPERTY....AND THEY HAD IT !! I couldn't believe it....BUT it WAS THERE....in there "Esheat Files....or unclaimed property.....BUT....I RECOVERED IT!!!!....20 YEARS LATER... BUT I GOT IT!!!! So, you just may be able to get your PRECIOUS DOCUMENTS....GIVE IT A TRY.

You can still use safe deposit boxes, just make sure it's booby-trapped. Your defense? "Well, there's no way for you to prove it was me who put it in there, because the only way such a trap could go off is if the safety deposit box is opened without me, and because it DID go off, that means it was opened without me, and thus you cannot prove no one else was in there between the last time I opened it and when YOU opened it.

I did that in the bottom of the top drawer of my dad‘s filing cabinet after my brother asked me four times in the same conversation what time I would be showing up the day of his funeral. It was a tossup whether he would be able to pretend he never saw it because he told on himself (to me) for trying to declare our dad non compos mentis. About three weeks later when I finally read it expecting just to see a bunch of formality about disposition of property and no inequal treatment of any sibling I found not just the favoritism that you might think would make him the guy in no hurry to go through all that stuff (until that moment I really did believe that I’d been advantaged with a better mother and all sorts of other stuff that justified a lifetime of cutting slack I never wanted to believe was favoritism for my brother) but also he raised the idea (of declaring him unfit) a month after Dad executed said will favoring my brother.
Execuhole had to tell him incompetence invalidates recently-executed wills. No shit. If I was making up fiction I would make it up easier to believe. He’s a half brother nine years younger who I evidently should’ve strangled in his crib but I was instead never anything but stupid enough to be protective toward. He hadn’t even stayed until the old fucker drew his last breath so if that’s who Dad wanted for a favorite they definitely deserved one another.

This whole thing makes no sense at all. 1. It's true that the customer key and the bank key is required. 2. The contents aren't insured because the bank has no idea what's in the box. The customer controls the contents 3. In the absence of a key a locksmith must break into the box vault. 4. Locksmith break ins are scheduled, controlled and recorded. 5. Entry to the box is via signature verification. 6. Break ins take place for a few reasons: death, key loss, abandonment. 7. The box owner had 2 keys in case they were lose one of theirs and both are exclusively under the owner's control. 8. The bank interior has surveillance.

It has to almost certainly be an inside job. Some bank employee got a look at the stack of cash and somehow stole it. It does take two keys to open the box. A general key the bank has and an individual key for the renter of the box. But I can imagine an employee having duplicates made before the box was rented, and just bides their time until it looks like there is something really valuable in a box. Also there is the possibility that the renter does not turn their key in the lock properly, fails to lock their lock, and the bank employee observes this and waits for the opportunity to loot the box. You can get insurance from an insurance company, but then the contents are known, and probably only insured if the vault is physically entered illegally.

A month after my grandpa died in 1985 his bank sent him a letter saying his box was past due and if it wasn't paid in 30 days it would be drilled. so my grandma went down to pay it and they refused to take the money. they said only my grandpa could pay it in person. she had his DC and all his ID stuff plus their marriage certified. they still refused to let her pay. She got a lawyer the next day and he filed a suit to stop them from drilling the box. A judge agreed but the bank said they drilled it already " 3 weeks before it was to be drilled". they gave my grandma the stuff they said was init but was missing most of the stuff that was listed in an inventory sheet my grandpa left in it that was done by him and the bank manager. All of his medals from WWII were gone, a pocket watched that belong to his grandfather,, and gold coins he got in Germany off a dead German officer " that is a very long story". My grandmother never got any of the stuff back

What's the meaning of safe deposit box if it's not safe

I suspect a bank employee copied the banks key and entered the box. Is there stored camera footage, if so, that will tell the story.

Some times I wonder if the Insurance companies do this to sell more Insurance.

Safe deposit boxes normally have 2 keys, a guard key (the banks), and a customer key. The guard key is used first, then the customer's key is used to finish the opening. Some banks have gone to one key, the customer's key only. You show your key, sign a log, and go open your box. Most likely, someone had a copy of her key and forged her name. She needs to look at her own family.

The wall that constrains and contains the entire 'wall section' of safe deposit boxes is usually designed to be REMOVED as duing bank emergencies and national need. Dont store anything of value in a commercial bank vault

Assuming she even put the money in there. How do we know that for a fact? You are put alone in a small room to open and close your box. Neither she nor the bank has any proof the money was in there. She should have put that money into an investment account or at least a regular savings account that is insured by FDIC. I don't know if this woman is telling the truth or pulling a scam.

I noticed that immediately....I didn't see a 2 lock system.....only one. I was aware of those rules when I started my deposit box years ago. Really, they are about only good for storing important documentation and that's about it. Since during Co-vid I couldn't get into mine, I"m now thinking of just getting either a large safe or fireproof safety box and keep my stuff at home..... If you got cash....it's probably best to hide it at home....

If the bank was made to be accountable for the contents of those boxes, they would be a lot more careful about who is allowed to access them...

Why would she keep $67,000 cash in a safe deposit box? She would have been better off playing the stock market.
