  • This thing is a marvel of design and engineering. It's beautiful and does everything well except hold pens....ironically.
Let's take a look at the most complex pen case I own.

I think it’s just marketed wrong. It’s not a pen case. It’s a portable desk organizer. I’d include maybe two pens, then a little pencil, eraser, maybe a correction tape, little stuff I might need anywhere I write, rather than loads of pens.

This would make a nice little portable watercolor palette. You could glue 6 little square pans in there, still have room for mixing, room for a small bottle of water and if that stand up pen holder doesn’t have holes in the bottom, you could use it to hold water.

This is like the adult version of the really complicated mechanical pencil cases from Taiwan/Japan that I used to have as a kid. I loved those things! There was a spot for everything.

I'm buying one for myself and all my friends who work in coffeeshops, libraries, museums, restaurants -- wherever there's a table and chair!

I don’t think it’s primary function as a pen transport. I can see this work very well as a student’s portable desk organizer for class. Get a pencil, a highlighter and two different colored pens and you have a really nice setup to take detailed notes. Takes seconds to close and set up again at your next class.

It's almost like a portable desk set to hold a couple pens, pencils, an eraser and such and act as a phone stand.

I was going to say a portable desk tidy but you are correct. I would use one when travelling on the train and trying to do some work or if I am hot desking.

thanks for showing us this: like you, I mostly just want my cases to hold a bunch of fountain pens, dip pens, mechanical pencils and leads but I’m always interested in anything Pilot comes up with!:)

Didn’t realize pilot makes accessories as well. Could be another rabbit hole to explore lol!

The packaging is a special kind of packaging traditional in Japan called an Obi strip or a *tasuki*. Japanese have a word for the "art of packaging": Tsutsumi.

Could be handy for someone who travels and likes to set up a mini desk to work in hotels, airplanes, coffee shops.

A grown up's Japanese kids pencil case. They're often branded with characters (Doraemon, Hello Kitty) and have a ton of contraptions in them.

What i like about this case is the idea you can put in jacket pocket bring to work for meetings. The fact that it has room for 4 pens is good since you would prob bring a couple of your fav fountain pens for you and a couple not so special pens for clients or whoever to use for documents etc.

While this isn't something I would put my fountain pens in, I would have loved something like this when I was mostly using ballpoint pens and pencils in high school and college

It is a very interesting case. It is more like a miniature desk stand for pens and perhaps paper clips, erasers etc. That you can use it to hold your phone is a definite plus. Perhaps watching a meeting while you are on a business trip.
I am a bit surprised that it is made in China and that there is no Pilot logo on the case. It makes me wonder if it was made for another company and Pilot just added the paper sleeve to sell as their own. But you did mention that there are other products of Pilot that do not carry their logo on the actual product.
Like you I prefer a more usable case to carry and store my pens.
    Great review.

The small pen box works well if you need to set up and pack up your desk quickly and only carry 4-5 pens with you at a time. Maybe give it to someone you know who works a hybrid schedule?

I find it curious that all the Japanese pen cases double as phone holders, I think the idea is that students use them on their desks or something. I guess it’s also useful for people who work in cafes and such?

Nice video, well presented, but the glare in the upper right corner of the video is very distracting.
Maybe you need to adjust the position of your lighting.

Why do you say “over-engineered”? Why not just say well engineered? All products should have such attention to detail. However, I agree this wouldn’t work for my EDC needs for fountain pens. Many people set up in a cafe with such a stand. People will search for the pen case that meets their needs. Japanese often pack multiple functions into one product (like a Swiss Army knife) so they can carry it in their smaller bags. You can understand if you’ve been on a Tokyo train during rush hour 😅. Aloha

It is so sad a company learnt people wanted to buy something like this. But not as sad as the fools that buy them in consumeristic search for happiness
