    I must confess that I am an absolute Rickshaw fanboy. At least when it comes to pen cases. At one point, I was housing my entire collection of then roughly 50 pens all in various coozies and pen rolls. They're great, and I still use them on and off, but I have since identified one minor drawback: ya can't look at all your pens at once without taking them out. So I DIYed myself some pen trays out of plastic trays I got from Target, some card stock, and some plain green craft felt. Works pretty well for what I need, and the trays are stackable! Now they live on my shelf. And I might have to expand soon, because I've pretty much filled all the slots inside (now at 60-ish pens). That regret, that sense of "what have I done" you were mentioning, Drew? Lol
    I've also adopted a somewhat Drew-ian "3 inked pens" policy, and I almost hate that I like it :D. No offense. It gets me to write much more with the ones that I have inked, and it removes a bit of the pain of choice of what pen should I pick today when I only have three. Now, granted, I still have more than three inked up, but I'm working my way through them all until I've written them dry, and I keep my three in a Rickshaw three pen coozy.

    My fp's are working instruments, all several dozen of them. I follow Drew's 3-pen rule, have since before he was born. I don't like those pen folders with elastic to hold the pens; I had a couple discolor where the band cinched them. I currently use a zip-up Amazon Basics folio large enough to have a 3-ring binder, a legal pad and appointment book, and a compartment made for 2 pens. Carried with a handle, it's gotten wear for certain. Would I purchase one of those Galen things for the level of travel wear that my folio gets? Absolutely not! I have a leather briefcase that I'd owned for 30 years--but it's heavy leather and it'll outlast me. Not these, but I'm delighted that hobbyists are enjoying them.

    I have a number of old (> 10 yr) leather portfolios that had elastic pencil/pen holders where elastic has given up and the whole loop has become loose and floppy.... they won't be holding pens anymore. In many metropolitan areas, where the ozone level can occasionally be relatively high, unprotected rubber has a pretty short lifetime. So many pen case designs completely rely on these elastic loops? Have you ever encountered or heard of this type of problem in pen cases?

    My favorite cases were from Nock Co but I think they've closed up shop. These were very colorful and handmade. I also like my Galen Leather binder that holds 4. I don't carry more than 3-4 at one time so I don't much need of a larger one.

      I love my Taccia kimono pen wraps and rolls (they come in singles, 4s, 8s), made of Japanese kimono robe fabric. I prefer the patterned ones (Nishijin collection) over the solid-colored ones (Chirimen) as the fabric of the former feels higher quality. You can find a list of US and international retailers on their site.

    Galen Leather's product are really good quality. I was impressed at how thick the letter was. Monteverde on the other side, you have to be careful not to store pens that are too thick. The loops on mine broke when I stored a Benu briolette but I have not had the same issue on other brands.

    What I've been looking for in a case but not yet found is one that has: a tray with individual padded slots for each pen, but no elastics. When the case is flat and open I want to just reach in, grab the pen that I want, then put it back with no fuss. But when I need to pack up at the end of the day, a flap (also padded on the side facing the pens) that closes the tray and makes each pen secure in its slot. My ideal size would be 12 pens, six on each side of the hinge, but I could live with 8. (Yes, I use that many pens in the day; I have a whole note-taking system that uses multiple colors and nib sizes.)

    My EDC pen case is the 3-pen coozy from Rickshaw in the grey tweed. I carry my Pilot Vanishing Point, a Tactile Turn slim bolt action pen for my non-fountain-pen-friendly tasks, and a Blackwing Natural pencil. This rides in my front pants pocket along with a pencil sharpener.

  • @TheresaRobertsonLROL
    @TheresaRobertsonLROL 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    My first single pen sleeve was an Aston leather. I LOVE it. This is where my Pilot Custom 74 rests snuggly in soft leather heaven. I recently bought a Galen Leather zippered 5-pen case with a field notes slip. I love the quality and I didn’t really think through having the field notes to the the right of the pens. When I write on the left page, it’s a bumpy ride for my fountain pens. So, to avoid that, I have to take out the field notes but the fit is so fantastically secure, I have to fight to get the field notes in and out. I decided that this case will be my ink journal. I still love the case, but will need to find a more practical arrangement going forward. I like the look of the Galen Zip folio you showed but wonder if I would run into the same issue. On another note, Galen leather zippers are crazy sturdy. I’ve seen the Rickshaw coozies but I’m a leather gal through and through.

    I prefer my pens in a drawer-type system.
    I used to keep them in the cases that held the pens with two elastic bands, but found that it was inconvenient to take them out/in if I was switching pens often. (Make a firm decision and have the possible pens ready ahead of use? Nah. 😏)
    Now they lay flat and I like pulling the drawer out and just picking the pen up.

    Fantastic video, Drew! Packed with good info plus entertaining, that’s my jam. Except for the Preppies in a Coffee Mug solution, I’ve settled on Rickshaw cases as the best all-around choice, because there is no risk of scratching plus pens are well cushioned. I love all Goulet’s ink-splatter patterns, but my next one will be your newer Synthscape design. Cheers!

    My newest case is a Dee Charles designs 32 pen zippered case, but I also have the Galen Leather medic bag, and Girologio cases, a 20 pen leather zipper case from Sleuth & Statesman, and lots of Rickshaw sleeves, two Coozys, the A5 zipper pouch and A5 bag - my Rickshaw products are for EDC, various configuration options, the Galen medic bag is my carry for letter writing club; and the other zippered cases are all for at home organization and storage. I have the Galen Walden Woodworkers nib shaped pen rest for desktop use in conjunction with my Coozy case with sleeves EDC, I might pull out a two or three or single sleeve for desk use in addition to the pen rest. I had a Rickshaw pen roll, but I gave it away, I discovered I don’t like the bulk of a rolled up roll style case, not even for paint brushes. Definitely not for pen storage or EDC.

      Single pen sleeves would work for protection. A lot of pen companies produce single sleeves for their pens. For swift to access I would recommend a Rickshaw sleeve (you could opt for a two or three pen sleeve rather than singles) but select a size smaller than the approximate height of your pens, so that the pen peeks out and is easy to quickly grab from the sleeve, maybe a S or XS, instead of the M height. You might need to buy directly from the Rickshaw website for the S and XS option.

    Ah, Drew…do you know the circular patterns on that mad-cool shirt of yours create a weird moiré pattern on-screen?
    *Anyway* …speaking of weird, I'm one of those weirdos who's actually happy with just four pens, three of which - a pair of Pilot Custom 823s and a Vanishing Point - are "very frequent carry", as opposed to EDC. The 823s stay in a lined leather case designed to hold not only two pens, but two pair of glasses, made of very supple grained leather, and once offered by…well, let's just call them a well-known, Florida-based company specializing in fine pens, stationery, and furniture related to reading and writing. I think this case is the best thing they ever made, and nothing they offer now matches it IMO. Of course, there *are* cheap knockoffs off this case, bt a quick glance reveals where the corners were cut on those. (My Vanishing Point? It just rides along in a shirt or jacket pocket, which is sort of the, um, point.)
