Massive crash 12km from Dakar

- It's finally time for the last day of the Africa Eco Race. The 6000+ km gruelling 13 day extreme desert rally all the way from France down to Dakar in Senegal has been the most monumental challenge on my body and mental resilience I have needed to just keep fighting on each day.
My mission has always been to share the real honest behind the scenes reality of what it takes to finish in Dakar. In the final episode things go dramatically wrong just 12 km from the 6000+ km finish line. On the famous beach race into Lac Rose I didn’t see shipwreck debris in the sand, throwing me over the handlebars and landing hard. Thankfully my Alpinestars TechAir airbag deploys and I make it off with just a grade 2 ACJ injury. Without the airvest I almost certainly would have needed a full shoulder surgery. Vanessa Ruck ranked 25th in the motorbike category where only 56% of the bikes successfully finished all stages making it to the finish line in Dakar. Ranking first in the female category Vanessa Ruck "The Girl On A Bike" became the first British female to finish the Africa Eco Race following the original Dakar route.

Congratulations on being the first British woman to complete the race. You have had a real emotional rollercoaster of a race. Not wishing to take anything away from your achievment, but didn't Patsy Quick finish the Paris Dakar the year Charlie Boorman had a bash at it?
@@Reggie3cl I think when she says she's the first woman to finish the race she specifically means the Africa Eco Race and isn't taking into account some of the legendary female riders from the past of the Pari Dakar. Not that Veronica didn't do something incredible here; I've done a few similar rallies and what she achieved here is no joke. @TheGirlOnABike you are an absolute legend. I've never seen a more honest or realistic view of what it's actually like to compete in these types of events. If you keep making videos like this then you'll have a lifelong subscriber in me.

I have watched every episode of this Rally series. I have cried, laughed, held my breath and been on the edge of my seat many times over. You continue to inspire me. Congratulations on such an epic achievement, I am so glad you put that bit in at the end acknowledging what you have accomplished, respect is not a big enough word. I hope you have recovered from all the standing at ABR, our paths crossed briefly at the gate before the women’s photo. We were trying to explain to the security lady that the photo was a thing and happening. I am sorry for my unnecessary comments about you hitching a ride, I should have realised you would have been done in from the effort over the weekend. My bad 😞 The ABR was another awesome event, and your stage was totally buzzing. Keep doing the TH-cam videos , they are great and much my favourite thing to watch. Congratulations Vanessa on not only completing the distance but getting a trophy as well. That was some journey Vanessa in both distance and endurance. I watched each video in the series as they were released. A very tough time both physically and mentally but you made it. You have done so much that I feel a lot of my younger years were wasted in comparison. Please take some time to get some rest and recuperate. Spend some time at home with Mr Ruck and gather your thoughts. The skills that you have gained are incredible. Post rally time you could consider an Uber Eats delivery on a sandy beach but watch out for the mindless holiday makers wandering aimlessly in your path, a quick pass and a squirt of the throttle to spin the rear tyre should be enough to give them a gentle dusting. I look forward to your future adventures. So many thanks to your crew for helping to make this happen, it was epic. Many thanks for sharing.

Crashing on sand is painful. It stops you in a short distance and inflicts damage. Well done for getting back on after that crash.

It most certainly was inflated, it happens so quick (20ms to complete inflation) it is so fast it is almost impossible to see with the eye! Such an amazing piece of life and body saving kit

Oh I would love to one day but it is a long way to go and alot of money, if I were able to get sponsors or some corporate speaking jobs whilst in Australia to help fund it then maybe it will make it onto the list but for now it is just not viable for me unfortunately

9:45 Somebody heavy fell of a cruise ship, eh? Dear team: When Vanessa next time swings her camera on a stick around, wait till she finished the first round, then drop to the floor. That will make a really good clip! 😁
That off: Well, you know Jens Kuck. A few months ago, he went to Morocco for some dune riding for a video. At some 30 to 40 mph, the front wheel of his bike slipped, he went over the handle bar and the instant deceleration folded his body together. Broke a vertebra. He is recovering well, but as you said elsewhere: That airbag probably saved you from a long unpleasant injury time-out. That could have gone much worse! 😵💫 (Seeing the condition of that beech brought up one question with me anyway: Is it so hard, getting a public service organised to keep the plastic trash and the wrecks off the beach? 🥺 Do they feel nothing for this beautiful beach? 🤨🥺)
