The Man Who Beat the Tour de France in Sandals | Amanpour and Company

  • Imagine winning the Tour de France. Now imagine doing that without any of the perks -- no mechanics, no hotels, no crew at all. This is exactly what Australian pro-cyclist Lachlan Morton did this summer. He dubbed it the 'Alt Tour de France,' riding 200 miles a day and beating everyone to the punch by five days. Lachlan did it all for World Bicycle Relief, a nonprofit that finds bicycles for people in need.

    When I was 50, I peddled solo from Morro Bay California to Palm Beach Florida pulling a trailer behind my bike. I trained for 6 days before starting my journey. When things went wrong, I just reminded myself that nobody held a gun to my head to get me to make the trip. If I was as young and fit as this guy, I could probably have done it in half the time. I never made the national news, but there was a story in the Palm Beach Post about the trip. Most people will be amazed at what they can do if they set their mind to it.

    I gotta recognize and express my appreciation for guys like Lachlan and the other leaders of the sport who have worked to change the image of professional cycling. You all in the media have helped to humanize the sport as well as promote some of the more POSITIVE images and messages. For too long the elitism, secrecy, and toxic nature of pro cycling had been so detrimental to riders (and fans) mentally, physically, and socially. Granted, there is still an extreme amount of pressure on these guys to perform. But we all enjoy it when a company like EF-Nippon, for example, is willing to sponsor a top-tier cyclist, like Lachlan, to ride for charity and participate in activities that connect with people in a unique way. At the end of the day, athletes are still just as human as you and I. They WANT to compete/perform. If they feel that they can’t - - shame on us for being so “selfish” that we think our enjoyment is more important than their suffering. If we were real fans, wouldn’t (shouldn’t) we be more supportive and concerned FOR our heroes?

    So cool! I just rode a fundraiser from San Francisco to San Diego-- nothing nearly as grueling as the Alt-Tour, but it was still 8 days of cycling from sunrise to sunset! One day we even did 140 miles. I decided to set off in Vans sneakers instead of my fancy clip ins because when training they'd get uncomfortable after 50 or 60 miles. It ended up being one of the best decisions of my life: my Achilles tendons started really aching after just a couple days. Having Vans on made it possible to move my feet forward, essentially taking off almost all the strain in that region :) You rock Lachlan!

  • @bengt_axle
    @bengt_axle 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    What this pro cyclist did is actually closer to what the original TdF was. The Tour was originally an event in which individuals (as opposed to today's teams) rode the tour largely unsupported, getting food where they could. Today's race uses a team of 8 cyclists and it is loosely established at the outset who will ride in the front to break the wind and wear down the competitor teams so that their rider can have the best chance of sprinting to the finish during the final minutes of an hours-long day of biking.
    Congratulations to Lachnan.

    • @ComicalFlask
      @ComicalFlask 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    • @garyives1218
      @garyives1218 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      About a dozen years ago manufactures attempting to save a few grams in a never ending competition to have the lightest frames started to design carbon fiber frames without any type of metal reinforcement for the bearings which hold the crankset axle. This part of the frame used to have a threaded metal to metal design to house these bearings. Then many different designs started being used where a cartridge bearing was just "press fit" directly into the carbon fiber frame. The tolerances (alignment) for this design to work well were almost impossible to achieve. After not that long the stress of hard pedaling actually causes these pressed in bearings to wear into frames causing even greater misalignment, then you get creaking and your 2 year old $2000+ carbon frameset is worth $0. Yes, pretty stupid, and now better manufacturers are starting to bring back a reinforced threaded system. My old 2004 frame with a threaded bottom bracket is still good as new.

      Ride in the country. If you must ride in the city, choose your routes carefully to avoid as many heavily trafficked roads as possible. It’s been a part of road cycling for decades.
      Become active with your local clubs and lobby the city and county governments for better bicycle infrastructure.
      In our community, we have managed to get the city council to include a cycling mobility plan that includes more and wider bicycle lanes on major streets, converting an abandoned railway into a bicycle path, building dozens of miles of bicycle paths that circle and cross the city, building more off-road trails for mountain biking and hiking, and educational programs to inform the public about bicycle safety.
      These changes will take time to implement and take effect. That’s why we cannot waste time doing nothing about it.
      You have to become active in your community and get more people involved if you want safer cycling. Otherwise, your complaints are nothing more than just that.
      If we can make it happen in little, old Georgetown, Texas, it can happen anyplace.

      @@prestachuck2867 Rural roads are tough. There are log trucks and the shoulders are narrow. Out here it's all about the mountain bike trails. Got to pack up the bike and go there. Not too much to ask really. I just like to ride from my front door.

    Really appreciate the fact he did it for a cause , perfect clap clap that .. But... It's a racer that is just doing advertisement stunts for his team and sponsor's. Its hard , yes! To do 200kms a day it's hard , but racers , -∆Race∆- remember he went for a Tour (Sightseeing). And the sandals .. it's just wtf hahaha

    Biking is great. As a car driver, I find them annoying when there is no bike lane. In the country look for quiet roads , bike lanes.

      you should be annoyed at whoever doesn't make bike lanes, not the cyclists

      You should learn to respect other road users. Always overtake cyclists with at least 1.5m.

    Someone find a journalist that is also a cyclist. This interview is so boring. Self-supported... endurance ride... no transfers... no 5-star cycling. Spice it up. Show the crocs.
