Exactly. Caitlin plays like a guy. No, she doesn’t look like one. She’s skilled, aggressive and understands the court. She doesn’t look for opportunities for herself. She’s like a general looking at the entire field. She is also emotionally mature and a skilled communicator off the court. The expanded exposure has uncovered that this is lacking in most of the league. Their distaste for criticism proves this and is a hindrance to their growth of character.

Carter, well put and well said. You hit the nail on the head when you talked about CC having both skill and likability. The Issue is that for years, the WNBA has not been likeable. As you said, they seemed to focus more on being activists than entertainers. What's sad is that when CC brought the eyeballs to the WNBA, they had the chance to show the fans that they COULD be likeable and worth watching. Instead they decided to show their entire butt and remain just as tasteless (if not even more so) as they were before CC came into the league. And worse yet, instead of having a moment of reflection and making changes to help turn things around, they doubled down on the obnoxiousness. (I will say there some players in the WNBA that realize the gold mine that is CC, and have adjusted to their benefit). My hope is that she is saying these things in order to foster peace in the WNBA. It's not gonna work, though, because, as they say, haters gonna hate...

The sad thing is there will be no peace in the WNBA from those players because they believe they are victims of her personally. Like all of us born in an unjust world no matter where we live. This country exists with blacks who feel victimized and whites who feel victimized. It’s just ugly all around. Clark is only a small part of the USA and she won’t fix it but no one will say she doesn’t have her own beliefs.

I understand when people try to say that CC was talking about marketing opportunities, but I think Mr. Carter pointed out the character of some players that make the wnba unpopular.
Companies also look at character when they sign athletes to represent their products.

      Not at all.
As ComvosWithCarter said, she brought race into all this again, and that's nefarious and unnecessary.
She can have all the respect in the world for those who came before her. We all do. Kobe showed many, many times how much respect he had for those that came before him, for those that taught him moves, skills and how to have work ethics.
What has "having respect for the women that came before her" got to do with race? NOTHING. Zero.
Her "IT" factor? What does her IT factor have to do with race? NOTHING.
Kelsey Plum, Breanna, Sophie, Lexie, Sue Bird, Diana Taurasi, Ticha Penicheiro - all white, all highly regarded, most of them became legends, and did they move the needle? No. No IT factor.
Race has NOTHING to do with cLark's success.
Nothing this 22 yo has said or done is by accident. She has been bullied and attacked physically and all she does is utter a protest to referees. She even had a guy come on court scream ra ci st things at her and threaten her (with a broken neck), and yet she did not succumb to pressure.
What she said was a lie, was planned and has set back the WNBA as ConvodmsWithCarter said.

  • @destinypirate
    @destinypirate 8 วันที่ผ่านมา +16

Carter, for conversation I will echo your points:
    1. When children are very young, they just evaluate whether strangers are Nice or Not Nice. That's all (unless they are "taught" to categorize further). By adulthood we complicate our assessments to varied levels - yet in the end we try to come back to whether someone is Nice (or likeable). The sad complication to this is Fear of Others - sometimes built on experiences, sometimes built upon taught biases.
    2. The most Liked basketball player in history is/was Magic Johnson. - Growing up in Iowa, just 2 states near to Indiana, I still imprinted on Magic because he was the most charasmatic athlete that I had ever seen (possibly along with Muhammed Ali). He also led the most exciting basketball ever played/seen (Lakers Showtime). - Note: Yes, Jordan is the most admired, and the Bulls can argue with the Lakers & Celtics for GOAT team status, but Jordan was never Loved like Magic & the Bulls were never as exciting as the Lakers.
    - Later in life, I've grown to love Bird's game as much as I feared it in the 80s. Still, in an all-time draft I am choosing Magic first (yes, over Jordan, and with doubts over Kareem) because - while both Jordan and Bird were better in all-around skill, Magic is the GOAT of making other players better...
    3. Caitlin Clark is Magic Johnson. For those like me who were there (with Magic) we have deja vu - "Full court outlet pass... layup!. . . The ball is inbounded. . . deflection! Coming across half court. . 2 seconds. . .the ball is launched! Score!!! Only Magic Johnson, er ... only Caitlin Clark ladies and gentleman!! We will never see another player like this!!" - Kobe, Curry, & Bird smile knowing they could do it All, but no one has made Teams better like Magic, like Caitlin.
Epilogue: Growing up in Iowa, no one ever told me to not like Magic (or to prefer Bird) for any reason, let alone race.
Maybe THAT is a "privilege". As privilege is something unique, something better than the norm... Most of us who grew up in Iowa grew up without bias pollution. Our standards are on character: Earned results, Devotion, Loyalty, Humility, Corny Humor, Community, Charity. You see this Iowa character every time you see Caitlin Clark (as you can/ could have with Iowa's greatest sport's hero, the man who saved wrestling, Dan Gable).
And you don't have to be from Iowa to appreciate True Character. - It's not like Iowa is Heaven. - Millions resonate with her, seeing something that reminds them of their grandparents' hopes for the future, no one having to be told to like/not like Magic/Caitlin for anything but how they are with people. As you said Carter, CC is great with people. Her name is as simple as multiplying her universal appeal X her unparalleled skills.
The truth is, everyone would love Clark (as it was once allowed to be easy to love Magic), if they were allowed to grow up like Iowans.
P.S. We can end all of this noise in one move. Get Juju (or another hyped rival to Clark's legacy) to transfer to Iowa. Everyone will see that we will Adopt her as One of Our Own, as we have everyone who takes a chance to brave our winters & visit our hospital. Then there will be nothing else to do but share the cheer.

Read that first sentence again but put the emphasis on the word HAVE and then pause after. It changes the meaning. Now she is saying she has earned everything, but she will acknowledge the fact that white privilege exists. I think a lot of this is in response to DJ Carrington saying "it must be nice to have the luxury of staying silent on the issues. etc. She was in a damned if you do, damned if you don't situation. Also she was asked a direct question on the subject, now what do you want her to do? Refuse to answer like Sheryl Swoops? you want her to say, "piss off, I hate all those black women who have beat the shit out of me all season"? No, she said the only thing she could to try and diffuse a situation that could go off like a roman candle if handled wrong. Did you see her reaction live to meeting Maya Moore, the girl was hero struck. that was not faked, she loves Ms Moore. She is not a racists and ... this rant is too long. @isabellascalzitti9524 I don't really agree though I get your point. Imagine 2 players - one from a well off family, one from a very poor one (leaving race out of it). They both work just as hard. Its likely the well off one has more opportunities, and the best equipment, better coaches. Probably they will end up slightly better with the same effort. Lots of factors of course but it is easier. In the league you have Flauje Johnson - whos father was a rapper who was killed before she was born. If I said that about a player and asked was that player was white or black, I'm betting most people will say 'black'. Privilege does not get rid of hard work - but it might make things 5% easier.

If she was asked a question about privilege, I can see how it would be appropriate to bring up socioeconomic privilege. Many players, including Caitlin Clark and Aja Wilson, grew up in the upper middle class and thus were able to dedicate more time and resources to their development as players.
Girls who grow up in single parent households or households with lesser financial means will likely face more struggles. I know we minimalize it today, but over $100 for basketball shoes that will get worn out quickly with high level play is no joke for a family without a lot of spare funds.

Congratulations to Caitlin Clark for winning TIME magazine athlete of the year!
…said no one. It’s all just criticism of one sentence in a many thousand word article. A powerful sentence, yes I agree. and it didn’t need to be there. TIME didn’t have to include it but they love that sort of thing. They aren’t a sports magazine and I’m sure they kept asking and asking until she said something.
We all hate the activists. But it makes me sad to see everyone turn this amazing accomplishment into yet another racial issue. I have heard almost no one celebrate this achievement and it just makes me sad as someone who is trying to appreciate her basketball accomplishments.
Did anyone ever consider that this white girl from a white town playing in white schools until the WNBA maybe has been influenced to think this way? Look at the disgusting questions she’s been asked over the season regarding race and her fans etc. She just can’t win. She’s not perfect which is why we shouldn’t idolize athletes.
That said, I hope she learned from this experience and understands that she just needs to focus on her game and not try to please everyone. She’s well spoken, friendly, polite, and one of the least problematic players in the league and she’s organically lifting up all other players in the WNBA just by being there.
Like I said, I appreciate your opinion and you did a good job here. I basically agree with everything you said but I’d like to move on and just enjoy her as a generational basketball talent and that’s it. There is white privilege in a way (she’s a novelty at first) but there’s also black privilege for other players (too many things to mention), especially in the WNBA. It’s better if we just stop talking about it. It doesn’t matter. Basketball matters.
Sorry for the long comment but if you didn’t read this, you definitely didn’t read the TIME article. It’s about 100 times longer than this comment. Go read or listen to it, it’s really good.

      @ericMT 8 วันที่ผ่านมา +8

No one read it. It takes about a half hour to read the entire piece. Most people won’t even read this comment because it’s too long for them. TIME even allows you to listen to the story as an audio recording and people didn’t take the time. If you take the entire piece in context, what she said about privilege is so trivial. I don’t like that she said it but it’s her life, she can say what she wants. I watch her for basketball.
It really shows where people are at, that they chose to focus on the one semi controversial thing she said and not the 500 other really interesting things she or the author said. On both sides of the spectrum by the way. I believe her true fans will move past this but it’s totally fine for people to not like that she said it. The part I don’t like is she got this incredible award that no women’s basketball player will ever get again probably and she got almost no congratulations for it. It just got everyone mad. It’s also kind of weird to me that everyone thinks they have a right to tell this very mature, well spoken young lady how she should think and what she should say.
We have this incredible talent that we may never see again unfolding right before our eyes and somehow it turns into a boring racial debate that has nothing to do with the reason she is so popular.

I got bored with the NBA by the time LeBron was taking over. Then CC came along, and last year, like you, I watched every single Indiana game. I found her to be charismatic, and I love the way she plays. It's smart, unique, and it's entertaining. It's great basketball. Somebody like an Angel Reese has phenomenal rebounding skills, but pretty much all of her other basketball skills are NOT strong at all. To me, I don't find enough entertainment value in just watching someone rebound. As for her comment in Time, I didn't find it offensive or unoffensive. I thought she was attempting to be thoughtful and appreciative of those she admires who built the league.

NOW we’re addressing it explicitly but I don’t think she knew that those Loud voices were not representing all black people. Also did you see what Temi said? Even the black players that were cool with her were looking at her race as a factor. She was up against a wall and part of the angry mob were players she needed to get along with and earn trust with. Carter...I love your energy...and you have a gift to speak your thoughts or beliefs or what you see with clarity...never stop, because not everyone has that. That has nothing to do with the color of your skin.. I am a white guy from the north and I don't need you to be white or black. Wisdom is wisdom and I like your soul. I have been trying to articulate some of what you have said as I think of why I have liked her, and as she has great skill she also has a special charisma that I have noticed with footage of her high school days ...She has interaction with the crowd that many just don't, she understands people came to watch and she takes them with her. When she celebrates she does it with the crowd, the crowd thinks we just did that. Win the crowd win your freedom is the gladiator line. She has a hate to lose thing that all the greats have and it's like they are playing a game within the game and people can see that. The game with themselves that they hate not doing their best is another level of communication that cannot be seen by an announcer but the people can pick it up even if they can''t explain it. Sugar Ray Leonard was a boxer when I was in high school that our teams would meet at a friends house to all watch because he had that I hate to lose, and that sense of understanding the crowd, he was serious but he brought flare to the match.. Many others I could think of but he comes to my mind as I can not forget him. I am much older than you but would like to say never apologize for your gift its to serve others with. It's just a gift and it's not your value as a person but it is valuable. I am trying to say you are way more valuable than your gift or Charisma, but we need the gift.

Carter, another great video! Caitlin prefaces her remarks with her admission of saying she had earned everything she has gotten, the "BUT" was what the Fever's publicity department had scripted for her to say as the spokesperson for the team and its interests. Time magazine did not just call Caitlin for an interview, and she threw on some sweats and headed over to the studio. This interview took weeks to take place, besides her photoshoots for the article, but she showed up with Hair coifed, manicured, pedicured, and her makeup was perfect, even her evening gown was probably $10k, and the way she kept pulling at the straps made me think she felt her tits were falling out. Every word was scripted and delivered in a professional manner.
If anything positive can be said about the "White Privilege" comment it would be that it shut up Sherril Swoops on the Gil's Arena program, which is another record CC has broken this year.

I'm a white guy, aged 60. I fully agree about the reasons for watching an athlete - any athlete. If they're exceptional at what they do, I notice.
My guess is Caitlin Clark gave in to the pressure to make some sort of Statement. Players like Brianna Stewart and Kelsey Plum (I think) before her have too. They attained a certain level of prominence, it became a hoop they felt like they had to jump through. I'm just not inclined to get hugely exercised about it. Not when there are real problems.
What do I think of as Real Problems? There are a lot things, but where race is concerned the big one is when institutions are manipulated to prevent or inhibit people from achieving their potential - to prevent people from voting, or getting a good education or a good job, or buying a home. This really doesn't apply to the WNBA.
We should all remember no category of entertainment, including sports, is essential for survival. We have these things because we enjoy having them. It's a gift - a privilege, if you will - to have enough athletic talent that someone will pay you to play a game. That should be the baseline understanding. Now it's true, what women basketball players can expect to get paid is an order of magnitude less than what men get paid, but it took decades before they got to that point. Really, for any of the major team sports.

Carter so glad you’re back because WNBA TH-camrs have been busy the past few months covering drama, drafts, rival leagues, CC of course. There HAS been content to cover even though the season ended. Stay tuned. Do some videos covering the stuff you missed. 😊 Welcome back!

You articulated your point clearly and concisely. I don't see you dragging it out like other podcasters to dissect each part of CC's interview to get clicks. Totally agree that we should talk basketball and not race. The problem is that people get sucked into the activists' agenda.
Would love to hear more on college bball, and leave the drama behind.

Have yet to find anything I disagree with.

I agree that this topic is relevant, because, despite some comments claiming that they want to just focus on Clark's basketball, we would not be interested Clark's basketball if we disliked _her._

The WNBA as a whole needs to revamped. The owners, the coaches, and the players for the most are not likable. They are jealous ,hateful , a lot of them cannot do interviews . Caitlin Clark worked hard and deserved all of her awards.

@@petep5207 the interview lasted all day. Did you read it? It’s very long and her comment was a few seconds from a super long interview. I’m not excusing it, I wish it wasn’t said but if you’ve followed her this year you know they just keep bugging her about it nonstop and now that she’s said something, in the future she can just say “I’m focused on basketball, I’ve already shared my thoughts on that”. I know you don’t believe me but we just have to wait and see how things play out. She just wants to play basketball and try to minimize distractions and by saying nothing, you know some people consider that to be racist. I’m not kidding. We are not dealing with intelligent people here and she’s making the best of a messy situation that she doesn’t deserve to be in.

@@ericMT it appears to me that she acknowledges her hard work for everything she has, so what part is the privilege?
It's either she's just appeasing the ideological thinking of her fellow players or maybe she believes she only has her fans because of her being white. If she buys into the nonsense that we're only watching because she's white, that's extremely insulting to every fan!!!
Some people here say she had to say something... I ask why? She already has the most fans ever, the best deals ever, why not just play ball and do what she does best?
I don't care what side she's on, I suspect her politics are different from mine and that's ok.
I only have an issue when players and celebrities' use that stage they have to be political. That stage wouldn't have been as tall without the dollars from the other side. It's a slap in the face for either side.

You are so spot on. Very smart analysis Carter. I believe we all feel like this. CC needs to distance herself from this rehtoric to have a great second season. Fans are disappointed with her to get into the 'R' dialog.

But because you have the best game analysis both critical and super hyped when it deserves to be!You’ve got skills and break the game playing down like no other! You have taught me so much more about the game on another level. Yes there are levels to game analysis too! You’re the best, spit on that mic❤😂😂

Carter, I agree with much of what you said. I really wish Caitlin hadn’t said the things that she said. As a white person myself, it seemed she felt she had to apologize for being white which is ridiculous. As a fever fan and a fan of Caitlin Clark’s, I’ve been assumed to be racist. I also love the way she plays and it doesn’t have anything to do with her being white. As for white privilege, I think you have to look no further than the Appalachian area of the United States. I don’t think those white people feel very privileged. You mentioned slavery and I think maybe what you don’t understand is that white people have been slaves too. North African trade markets traded white European slaves from Spain, Portugal, France, England, and the Netherlands. The British also took white Europeans to America as slaves when they first came to this country so can we get past the slave narrative . On Twitter, black women have called Caitlin Clark the Mayo Princess, White Bread, and a teenage boy. What people fail to realize and we don’t talk enough about is the fact that, as far as the black players of the WNBA are concerned, we have a situation of racism against white people. And as far as elevating the black women of the league, that is not Caitlin Clark’s responsibility. It’s their job to elevate themselves!
