We are back with another Gintama Explained video! It's been a while! In today's video, we discuss the anime counterparts comparisons of the real life police force, the Shinsengumi from the Gintama series. There's actually quite a few interesting stories/details about the group and individuals included within the troop. Let me know what you all thought about this video and if you have any other requests for future videos like this whether it be from Gintama or another series, let me know! Hope you enjoy!
Hijikata was actually supposed to be the protagonist in Gintama. As a native from Hokkaido it doesn't surprise me that Sorachi included the Shinsengumi in his story.Hijikata, but not only him,is a popular historical figure in Hokkaido where he died during the Battle of Hakodate.
Oh didn't know that Hijikata was suppose to be the original protagonist, that's cool. But yeah, as i said in the video, the Shinsengumi is kinda like a secondary protagonist of sorts in the Gintama series (minus of course the main trio). But yeah, i'm sure there is a lot more i can go in detail about Hijikata if i do a future analysis on his character :)
@@mairuzukage Yup, according to our local Gorilla, Gintama was originally a manga about Shinsengumi with a female Okita, a MADAO Kondo and a Gin-san Hijikata. However, because of the fact that he was scared that he will ruin the legacy of the Shinsengumi and more importantly, Hijikata, by making him a total loser old man like Gintoki, decided to change rails and made Gintama instead.
I read somewhere that his editor suggested that the story needs a fresh protagonist. So, Sorachi created Gintoki. And maybe that's why Gintoki and Hijikata can't stand each other.
I first met okita souji as Kagi in the Arabic dubbed version of peace maker korugane by spacetoon as a girl then lately rewatched it and boy I was shocked.
I’m Japanese so I already know all this but it makes me happy to find people outside of Japan taking the time to know about some of our history😊 Gintama is mainly comedy and Sorachi is no history expert so the characters only loosely correlate with their real-life counterparts, but by learning the history you can understand the backdrop of Gintama to be the conflict between the people in power trying to westernize Japan to not be trampled over and the samurais trying to preserve the old ways of Japan and I think this makes the anime even more interesting.
I love my Japanese viewers! You all are awesome! In general, I find Japanese literature and history to be very interesting so I really appreciate the words and that you liked my video. Thanks again :)
Leaving aside the historical part. Some Gintama characters are also based in other characters too Hijikata = Hajime Sato and Okita = Seta Soujirou from Rurouni Kenshin ... Otae = Chichi from Dragon Ball (strength) and Kaoru (bad cooking) from Rurouni Kenshin...
if you want to watch another great series that has the shinsengumi in it, you can watch Golden Kamuy, the manga is a lot better but the anime is plenty great too
Again, a nice video and we can see how much work you put into it, I already knew some stuff but there were things that I learned while watching this. Thanks for this ^^
Did you know Kagura was based of the story of princess Kagura also known as The tale of the bamboo cutter. Just thought I would share that fact as that tale is a personal favourite of mine that I grew up knowing.
Good job! Glad you enjoyed your research into the Shinsengumi! Also great job finding pics of the actual men. And, yes, that painting of Itou-san is the only image. I don't think he ever had his photograph taken before his death, as photography was still fairly new in Japan and a lot of people thought it stole your soul. *laughs*
Awesome video bro! I actually learned lots of new stuff about the real life Shinsengumi, and it kinda makes me sad we didn't get more focus on Matsudaira in the series. I'm looking forward for more content! RIP Itou
Woooooo!!!! Damn👌 look at the boys! This was great to hear more details and i knew some were connected to real man but didnt know some others so this was nice and like gosh this shows how sorachi really had to look up and just know some things like probs to him!👏 more love to him! This was a fun vid to see once again loved how u structured it!✨
Actually these figures are pretty famous in Japan so a lot of people know them. There was also a popular historical drama about the shinsengumi airing at the time the manga started so the editor suggested they capitalize on that popularity lol
Awesome vid as always would love one on the Kihetai or just Takasugi next. Also did you see the preview of the new Gintama chapter there is no spoilers its a Color Page with something very interesting added to it lol would love to know your thoughts it's on twitter.
Thanks a lot! Maybe i'll do the Kihetai or Takasugi next! I saw a preview that was basically an advertisement for the return of the Gintama manga which had new animated material and as a anime only i was shook lol. However, with Gintama returning and with the anime possibly going to take a few years to adapt the rest of the chapters, i'm considering reading the manga now.
ThatGerardoBoy I did thank you and hope you had a good one as well! I’m glad I could provide some info, haha. Let me know if you have other suggestions!
@@mairuzukage Gintama has this thing they pull off so well when it comes between drama, comedy, and action. I don't notice it much in the manga, but the anime pulls it off so well. If I had to say why I'd have to guess the soundtrack and voice acting makes it perfect. It'd be a cool video to touch on those things. It surprises me how the show can make me go from laughing to getting emotional within seconds.
In pure action and drama yes you might be right, but in terms of flexibility and plot transitions, well no doubt Gintama win this one. Heck, it was even faulty to compare this two in the first place.

kondo actually kinda resembles a gorilla
😭😭
Fun fact: Okita Souji is also a servant in Fate/Grand Order, though Okita is a girl because Fate
And she also become extra THICC in the process.... 😂
Hijikata is also a servant and he likes pickles
Okita is a boy not girl
@@huynguyen-cg7zf "Is Also in Fate/Grand Order" Okita is a guy in real life History, Not in FGO.

There's already a character in Rurouni Kenshin called Hijikata Toshizo though, though Hajime Sato does remind me of Hijikata
Incorrect. Saito Shimaru from Gintama & Saito Hajime from Rurouni are both based on the real life Saito Hajime.
Hajime Saitou was based on Hajime Saitou from real life. It was Aoshi Shinomori who's based on hijikata in rurouni kenshin.
if you want to watch another great series that has the shinsengumi in it, you can watch Golden Kamuy, the manga is a lot better but the anime is plenty great too
I definitely need to finish it, only seen the 1st episode haha.
Im already on that list IDK that Shinsengumi will be part of Golden Kamuy imma watch it later.
@@mairuzukage season 3 has start, have fun :D
Wow, Hijikata actually notice Ito's connection with enemy in real history
That's cool
R F Yup!

No problem! Glad you enjoyed it, if there is anything else you wish to see let me know!
I just love the Shinsengumi more than Yoruzuya(I love Yoruzuya too tho) especially Sougo(OkiKagu4Ever)
That makes sense only if you are a girl. Who likes that sadistic bastard. I know Gintama is a bit sadist too but nowhere near okita.
