that's someone from the late Sengoku period (when it down to mainly just Ishida and Tokugawa) that I'd love to hear talked about more since the only real big media he was talked about in was the book and TV Movie (Nioh is so fantasized that I don't count it as more than a cool reference), Shogun, that person being William Adams, also known as Miura Anjin, who was involved in the Battle of Sekigahara and was one of the few foreigners to be given the rank of samurai by Tokugawa Iyeasu. overall he is a really interesting figure
Wonderful Shogo. Thank you for these videos. I enjoyed hearing about Saito Hajime as I love Rurouni Kenshin. Is there any document that describes a fight with a Hittiri battosai and Shinsengumi. I know that Rurouni kenshin has elements of fiction and elements of the history of Japan. I will appreciate any information. Thank you
That was very informative. ^_^ One thing though, instead of saying that Nagakura and Saito died of sickness (as evidence of their strength), it may be better to say that they died of old age. Because if you think about it, Okita Souji also died of sickness. ^_^ I wonder where Kondo Isami and Vice-captain Hijikata Toshizou stand in the rankings.
hijikata was the tallest member of the shinsengumi, and stood out the most, so i think he was recorded the most, you can find most of his info online and his pictures. but i don't think he really ever fought more of a tactician
Thanks for the video Shogo! It makes sense to say that Okita died from disease. English is not my first language, but these other guys died very old, I think it makes more sense to say that Saito died of natural causes, or old age.
I really enjoy your channel, I lived in as a kid for about 4 years while my dad was on the USS MidWay. Even though I was I kid my time there, it stayed with me I have the utmost love and respect Japan and Japanese People.
Surprising how many actual facts were included in the Rurouni Kenshin anime (and the Kyoto storyline)! Including the fact that Okita Soji died of TB. Having kids watch those shows is kinda like giving them a history lesson! 😁 Edit: I wanna know more about the Ikedaya incident. Is that the one where Shinsengumi took out the rebels in an inn who were planning on burning the city? If so, according to the anime version, Saito was a part of it. 🤔
So I believe that when they raided the Ikedaya Inn, the Shinsengumi actually split into two groups, and it's possible that Saito was a part of the group that didn't infiltrate. He was probably a part of the backup group that arrived when the first group with Kondo and Okita finished up. Hijikata was supposedly a part of the backup group too. I believe that the reason for splitting up was because the Shinsengumi wanted to cover more ground because I think they weren't exactly sure which Inn the rebels were at. That is my understanding at least :D (Huge Shinsengumi nerd)
It is Ironic how the Shinsengumi are mostly low ranked samurai and commoners fight to protect a shogunate that forbids low ranking commoners to exceed their ranks and abilities and indirectly try to make sure people stay in their class and ranks while most of them did the direct opposite. Trying to be the samurai warrior while you are not the class would have gotten you executed by the shogunate10 years before they Shinsengumi where formed. It was one of the main reasons for peace after the sengoku jidai all elements of resistance or anyone that give anybody an idea they could become strong like a samurai and fight where simply eliminated and removed from society.
Same thing with who they were fighting. Despite their restore the emperor expel barbarians, the other side basically followed the same policies as the shogunate of strengthening Japan while trying to minimize foreign influence.

I absolutely love Japan, the history is just so freakin cool. I wish I could go back in time and just live in all the different eras of all the legendary warriors
I love the shinsengumi character portrayal in gintama. Amd how the amanto are just westerners... also how some amanto are portrayed is brilliant amd funny.
Fascinating! I try and find as much information about the Shinsengumi as I can. I love that point in Japanese history. The Shinsengumi's dedication in what they believed in was inspirational. It's hard to find information, a least relatively accurate information, about them in English. The one book in english I have made it quite obvious the writer held a resentment for them and it made me a little upset at the language he used about them, often calling them thugs and the like. I have a copy of the book Nagakura-san had written (i believe alongside a reporter), but my Japanese isn't nearly as good yet to properly read it!
I'm a big fan of Shinsengumi and I'm so happy for finally having more content of them in English..! I know a bit of japanese, so many of the materials I had to read really slowly, but other people can't and it's hard to gather all the info.. I first met them in Rurouni Kenshin when I was a child, but only got really passionate after the otome game "Hakuouki". After that, I watched movies, dramas, read books... I love Gintama too by the way but I think my favorite franchise right now about them is Peacemaker Kurogane. I really love the portrayal of the members there. Could you please give us recommendations of more books and other media with them, even if it's japanese only? Or give your references? Also might sound weird, but the drama made me love Heisuke a lot and I wish I could know more about him, but it's hard to find more info.
Well since im a Saito Hajime fan i was hoping that he would win, Shinpachi is a name that ive not come acrossed alot so i thought of him as fiction. Great video btw
I just love the mere size of cultural and historical value that literally drips from each and every one of Shogo's video. By the way, I'd like a video about the various eras in japanese history, making a little summary about the succession of periods.
I really adore the tiny illustrations of the shinsengumi. I found myself smiling the entire time -- I also knew that Nagakura Shinpachi would be listed as the strongest based on the criteria in the video. Thank you for a wonderful video. I truly appreciate your perspective.
I've recently tried to understand more about Japanese history at the end of the Edo Period because I play a game called Dead By Daylight and recently bought the "Cursed Legacy" chapter which comes with a character "The Oni" - a vengeful samurai, who lived at the end of the Edo Period and couldn't handle the changes going on in Japan at the time and thus tried to bring honor to his family by eliminating "imposter samurai" - commoners who became wealthy under the changes coming to Japan. I'm trying to understand his lore and his time better, because I'm simply fascinated with his lore. I'm also a history student and so, I have a general interest in such things. Thank you for teaching me, I'm happy I'm becoming more and more familiar with the subject 🙏🏻🥰
After talking about Shinsengumi, how about a similar group from the era, the Mimawarigumi? And probably the rebels like Kawakami Gensai, Okada Izo and so on.
Nice!! these three was in my favourite Rurouni Kenshin, eventhough Okita just had a brief appearance while Shinpachi and Saito played a vital role on the newest "Hokkaido Arc", and while you said about the Saito's technique, you mean the one they called Gattotsu in the anime/manga??

I would love to see your review on the historical accuracy of the final chapter(s) of the Shura No Toki anime. Specifically, whether Sakamoto Ryōma had any contact with the Shinsengumi.
I love the way you are introducing us to Japanese culture and can see you try and do that in the best way possible so if I humbly may make a suggestion please replace "strong" with "proficient" when referring to the swordsmen.
Shinsengumi is one of my favorite Japanese series. Very entertaining and educational. I will watch that series again. I really hope Netflix purchase the series and show to everyone.
I'm only assuming Okita was able to use his 3 stage thrust if he was using a shorter sword and adjusting his stance. It might make for the fact that Soji was a slender and small stature person able to move so quickly and combine with a short sword could land the 3 thrusts in succession
I would have likely never heard about them if not for Rurouni Kenshin, now i'm interested in Japanese history particularly the Shogunate and samurai history
The closest I ever saw that resembles the Mumyou Sandanzuki was a pierce-kick-pierce combo, where the in-between kick is timed perfectly to widen the gap between the combatants in order to allow a follow-up second thrust, but that would make it only a "Nidanzuki"? And not only does the timing need to be right but the first thrust has to be shallow/only deep enough to allow the user to still pull the sword out and have enough momentum to thrust a second time while the opponent gets pushed back by the kick. The only way I can think of to complete the third strike is to either have more than two legs or heavy use of performance enhancement drugs. Or maybe you can execute the move once in a thousand tries out of sheer luck, but probably no one will be there to witness it happen. Whatever it was, I guess using the killer move repeatedly in battle put a heavy strain on Okita Souji's already sickly body.
Yes i knew about Okita Soji in Rorouni Kenshin. That he had Tuberculosis when fight Against Battousai. It gives me chills whenever I read about Okita san's biography also to Hajime Saito too!
So there's this one game called Fate grand order where mythical and historical figure from our world is a character in the game , Okita and Saito hajime is also in it which I found interesting. Nobunaga is also there

Finally a video where saitou was included. As a rurouni kenshin fan, I'm really glad. Saitou is one of my favourite characters shinsengumi.
Yours is one of the bests TH-cam chanels I follow. Really cool to learn all this history details. One thing, I believe Okita Soji is also present in Samurai X (Rurouni Kenshin) in the era he was known as Batossai.
Ps: I also loved your the last samurai review, it is one of my favorite films. I loved the art, soundtrack, actors. Thanks for the video 🙏🏻
Batossai (Kenshin), just clarifying 😅 I wasn’t talking about Okita
So is saito Hajime and nagakura shinpachi
I expected Hijikata would be here, SHINSENGUMIII DAAA!!! and there went my SQ..
I'm glad I could scroll at least somebody who wishes to see Hijikata as well through the comments. 🤧
I'm new to the channel. Thank you for this information, I know nothing about Japan and I like learning about it.
Amazing content. Love seeing the work you put into your videos. Loving learning more about Japan. Thank you for your work
that's someone from the late Sengoku period (when it down to mainly just Ishida and Tokugawa) that I'd love to hear talked about more since the only real big media he was talked about in was the book and TV Movie (Nioh is so fantasized that I don't count it as more than a cool reference), Shogun, that person being William Adams, also known as Miura Anjin, who was involved in the Battle of Sekigahara and was one of the few foreigners to be given the rank of samurai by Tokugawa Iyeasu. overall he is a really interesting figure
Thank you
Fun fact, their Kenjutsu, Tennenrishin-ryu is still taught today and is one of the few styles that train in old school kendo.
Nice work adding the Romulos Hilsboro Cover art in. Love that book
It's surprising how closely Gintama stuck to the real life origin of the Shinsengumi
I really enjoy your channel, I lived in as a kid for about 4 years while my dad was on the USS MidWay.
Even though I was I kid my time there, it stayed with me I have the utmost love and respect Japan and Japanese People.
These segments are really well done!
Surprising how many actual facts were included in the Rurouni Kenshin anime (and the Kyoto storyline)! Including the fact that Okita Soji died of TB. Having kids watch those shows is kinda like giving them a history lesson! 😁
Edit: I wanna know more about the Ikedaya incident. Is that the one where Shinsengumi took out the rebels in an inn who were planning on burning the city? If so, according to the anime version, Saito was a part of it. 🤔
Hit up Like a Dragon: Ishin
So I believe that when they raided the Ikedaya Inn, the Shinsengumi actually split into two groups, and it's possible that Saito was a part of the group that didn't infiltrate. He was probably a part of the backup group that arrived when the first group with Kondo and Okita finished up. Hijikata was supposedly a part of the backup group too.
I believe that the reason for splitting up was because the Shinsengumi wanted to cover more ground because I think they weren't exactly sure which Inn the rebels were at. That is my understanding at least :D
(Huge Shinsengumi nerd)
Hmmm which anime ver? Definitely not Samurai x ova or shinsengumi kitan, i guess.
It turns out I didn't know that much. This is new knowledge to me, thank you so much for sharing this.
@@specialnewb9821 Katsura Kogoro was one of the 3 great nobles who led the restoration not all anti bakufu where affiliated with sonno joi many where in favor of reforming to a western style government.
@@ricardoblikman2676 Certainly, I just find it ironic that they went to all the trouble of removing the shogunate only to have a general continuity of policies out of necessity. Now I am speaking generally. Imo the Meiji reforms went farther and were impemented better, but had Yoshinobu been given a real chance who knows?
@@specialnewb9821 Dunno but if you let others eat your cake that easy it does not signal leadership. Ambitious people will eat your whole plate if you let them.

Saito Hajime is like an assassin's creed character, He work in the dark to serve the light
The Shinsengumi would not have liked you very much as a foreigner
@@koba2348 Didnt ask for your opinion mate :)

Wasn't expecting this line. Cool video by the way. 😃
I learned about shinsengumi from Rurouni Kenshin. Since then i searched about the history of meiji restoration. It was bloody but epic
All I know about the Shinsengumi comes from Rurouni Kenshin. According to that manga Okita was the strongest, but Saito was also a beast! :P
My favorite character of the shinsengumi is Hijikata Toshizo........as a historical figure and more thanks to Gintama.
Isn't it Toshiro?
Lmao I love how you say character though even tho you're mentioning the real person as well

Otaku Toshii!!
As a fan of Hakuouki, I really felt into the Souji fanbase
Saito wasn't able to participate in the big battle cause he's busy fighting himura at some place
I just saw Saito Hajime in the title: Rurouni Kenshin people or as it is known here in Latin America: Samurai X.
After talking about Shinsengumi, how about a similar group from the era, the Mimawarigumi? And probably the rebels like Kawakami Gensai, Okada Izo and so on.
I only knew okita souji from fgo and oddly got really hooked on the history about him 😅
Nice!! these three was in my favourite Rurouni Kenshin, eventhough Okita just had a brief appearance while Shinpachi and Saito played a vital role on the newest "Hokkaido Arc", and while you said about the Saito's technique, you mean the one they called Gattotsu in the anime/manga??
He was talking about the actual historical technique, not the imaginative manga version.
@@rev.paull.vasquez4001 yes i mean do it inspired that Gattotsu one, when he describe about the stance it look very similar between the real world and the manga
@@leosuwandi7005 As far as I know, the manga ka made no attempt to resemble any historical technique at all. Doesn’t make gatotsu any less cool looking.
Finally a kenshin comment after all this Gintama stuff.
The wolf of mibu???
Great video, i love seeing videos like who is the strongest "X". I have been interested in yokai lately and japanese folklore. Would love to see a video about strongest yokai or folklore related videos!
Your channel is great I learn so much from it.
great video, shogo!
I really love your historical video
It is funny your video came up in my recommendations I just finished watching 2 Kenshin live action movies. They were the movies revolving around Tomoe.
Did you watch the first three?
@@vicount3944 unfortunately no. They are not available on Netflix Canada. I liked the last 2 though.
Very educational and entertaining. Thanks!
I really enjoy how you present your videos. I love to learn all new things. If you were one of my college professors, your students would really enjoy learning from you. Thank you so much for your videos and teachings. Thank you for sharing Japanese culture. I appreciate you.
This was awesome. Thanks for sharing all of this knowledge
Always learn something new with you. Thank you. I will try the 3 tsuki in one step. :)
Konnichiwa, I have been interested in Japan and Japanese culture since I was a kid. And would love to eventually visit. Your videos are amazingly informative and interesting. Keep the videos coming my friend
I would love to see your review on the historical accuracy of the final chapter(s) of the Shura No Toki anime. Specifically, whether Sakamoto Ryōma had any contact with the Shinsengumi.
Well, Kondo Isami was executed partly on charges of having ordered Ryoma's assassination
I love the way you are introducing us to Japanese culture and can see you try and do that in the best way possible so if I humbly may make a suggestion please replace "strong" with "proficient" when referring to the swordsmen.
i dunno what i watched to get this recommendation, but i'm pretty happy i watched. Pretty interesting stuff^^
Shogo was being too polite when he was slightly implying that Nagakura Shinpachi may have been hyping up himself LOL
Thank you for the work you do!
Shinsengumi is one of my favorite Japanese series. Very entertaining and educational. I will watch that series again. I really hope Netflix purchase the series and show to everyone.
It’s gotta be Saito man, he got that Gatotsu that can pierce everything
I'm only assuming Okita was able to use his 3 stage thrust if he was using a shorter sword and adjusting his stance. It might make for the fact that Soji was a slender and small stature person able to move so quickly and combine with a short sword could land the 3 thrusts in succession
Finally real actual history of shinsengumi.
"Turbulent times" was such an understatement.
I love learning more about your culture
Amazing video, thank you for the effort!
Thanks Shogo for this very informative video.
thank you for another great video, your channel is one of the most informative on here?
Both videos were extremely important for understanding your culture.
Fascinating as always. More videos Shogo San!
You got me before the first minute, I’m sold ! I think I just found a Gem !
I believe another Shinsengumi Member, Juro Abe, stated the same ranking in your video.
I really enjoy hearing about the Shinsengumi. My 5 or 6 times great grandfather was Okita Soji.
Once I'm early!!! Omg thank you so much for the video. I don't like history, but your videos are always interesting and awesome!!! :D
I would have likely never heard about them if not for Rurouni Kenshin, now i'm interested in Japanese history particularly the Shogunate and samurai history
I really love these Japanese history lessons! :0
Ah yes the shinsengumi, consisting of a 5 star berserker, Nero and okita san daishouri
Nobunaga is also there
Sandan doesn't necessarily means three times.
Sandan might mean a strategy in "three levels", refering to some form of feint or rhitm.
Like "Dan" in Karate meaning stage/level, I assume?
I wonder if all the seven sword skill masters had been mentioned in your other Shinsengumi videos? I don't recall ever hearing of them before, perhaps I missed it.
That "Aku soku zan" though... sounds catchy :)
Was not expecting shinpachi at #1, as a fan of peacemaker this is a pleasant surprise.
