Hasegawa is definitely the deepest character. Gin-san found out how deep you can get with him, alright. Welcome to the club, my dude! Now you can cry like the rest of us when the Final Movie (assuming it really is final, this time) comes out, as everybody says "dondake" one last time.

Hello everyone. I just sobbed for 15 minutes at the idea of watching the new Gintama movie. Haven’t read the manga because the animation team and VA cast is too good, so I don’t really have a connection to the manga. So now I’m having an existential crisis because I have to come to terms that after I finish the movie and the 2 specials, I will have no more *new* Gintama content to experience. This isn’t a joke, but it is hilarious. So in the spirit of Sorachi, I think I’ll laugh at myself for a bit. Thank you. Good bye.

The moment when i realize that gintama is special is in the moments of episode recaps. Every 50 or so episodes they show 1 second of each one at the end credits to close off the season finale. Then i realize that i recognize every single one of them and every single one is unique on its own right.
For a show that has 300+ episodes to have so much quality on each of them is very rare but gintama makes it so natural. There is a reason why this is the only series that is featured in mal top 100 over 10x and 3x in the top 10.

What strikes me is how intricately nuanced and realistic gintokis character is. almost every single facet of his character (except his laziness) can be traced to the war. he is rude and callous on the surface to avoid forming new relationships coz if he does, what if he fails to protect them? Also one more interesting thing that I love is his crippling fear of ghosts. gintoki has fearlessly fought monsters of unimaginable magnitude with near zero chances of winning against them but he is scared shitless of ghosts. I find it really interesting coz in my opinion it represents his guilt of failing to protect his friends who died and the guilt of killing probably innocent characters who were fighting him to protect their loved ones.
gintoki is also a LITERAL polar opposite of a shonen hero. shonen heroes almost always undergo character development DURING the story starts while gintoki has already been developed. And while most shonen heroes almost always succeed in reaching their goals, gintoki has failed spectacularly and in an insanely traumatic way.
seriously you can find so many parallels between gintoki and real war veterans it's mind boggling. This is why he stands along with guts as one of my top two greatest protagonists in anime and manga.

Even the homeless man ((Mushishi)) got a freaking backstory that broke my heart and he hardly popped up 😂 Gintama has been my favorite series for 10+ years and when I explained the story to my friend, while discussing with her why I loved it so much- she asked why we didn't just tell people what Gintama leads to- and I told her because it ruins the amazing rise Sorachi works to build, and being surprised by the punches Gintama throws at you with your bonds to it's characters is one of the greatest feelings to have.

Truee. It's so hard to recommend people Gintama. It doesn't get good at once, it needs building. But my friends are those who likes 12/24 episode anime that got right to the point, it's hard for them to try Gintama.

And that whole dynamic between Gintoki and Sogo makes sense since both have some similar personality traits, like their aloof and laid back attitude or comedic sadism, and also their whole rivalry with Hijikata, Sogo also slowly starts looking upto Gintoki as sort of a benchmark also, He was able understand how strong Utsuro is because he saw Gintoki having a very tough time against him and little details like that make their dynamic quite entertaining and same thing can be said about Kondo and Katusra, Hijikata and Kagura or Shinpachi and Yamazaki

I’m currently 150 episodes into Gintama, and I feel like the arc so far that perfectly summarizes the energy of Gintama is the 2 episode arc about the dying dog. The show manages to take this serious, relatively cliche concept, take a left turn completely off the rails into an area of absolute nonsense, and by the end makes you an emotional wreck anyways. It’s something else.

I think one of the reasons that why people dont watch gintama is because most of the animes tell the purpose in the first episode like you said. Someone said if the first episodes not good they will never be good . But gintama isnt like that. You can never tell what the next episode will be about. Sorachi could show what happened to Shoyo in the beginnig but you would always think about that and not pay attention to anything else.

IMO if episodes 11-13 don't hook you then Gintama's not for you tbh. They're the first actually serious episodes, they give us the first real insight into Gintoki's character and they first feature the recurring wholesome moments and character interactions.

    • @justasandvich7168
      @justasandvich7168 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

@@deuce5546 a fair counterpoint. Some people got hooked as late as the Benizakura arc. Although it started to get my attention at exactly ep 13, some people consider the first 50 or so episodes a chore to watch, not realizing that its those same episodes that would set up the rest of gintama all the way through. Benizakura is the final stop on seeing whether or not you would enjoy it, as it's the very first significant tone change of gintama that's both action packed and foreshadowing. It's just gonna get better from that point on

Watching that episode with Ikumatsu and Zura, I wouldn't have guessed that Zura would actually becomes a more moderate joi rebel like he does in the show. The entire episode with Ane and Mone came right back around and became quite important. And I never would have expected that Zura's catchphrase to be so important.

I had been keeping my heart and postponing watching The Final and I finally did, ugly crying because I don’t know what to do with my life now. Gintama has been my comfort zone, my home and hope and amongst the many other shows I watched through the years, I’m back to season one. DOES is in my playlist too. This build-up, this journey was so emotional, fulfilling and actually really so so funny when the show decides to be funny. It’s crazy like life in reality is, but the backstory of each character makes you a better person, an emphatic person. Such a great masterpiece! ❤️

Gintama is my favorite anime ... it still causes me a roller coaster of emotions despite knowing what will happen ... the big problem that as shonen people think they see action within the first 3 chapters and gintama does not do this until passing the 50 chapters .... The shonen normally you mind action, plot and then they are building the world that you will see, gintama is the other way around they build the whole world and then they drop the plot all at once ..... Many people It does not give this great anime a chance for the same reason, you have to see it with an open mind without rushing and it will never stop surprising you .... Something that makes me happy about 2020 is that many people are giving the opportunity to gintama what before it did not happen, it is quite undervalued when you know that you can contribute much more than most shonen

Finally, a fellow connoisseur of Gintama. I wish more people appreciated and watched this absolute masterpiece of an anime. I saw it 2 years ago and have been rewatching it lately and even after having seen close to 150 anime, I don't think I've loved a show and its characters as much as Gintama. It makes me sad that the manga and anime have ended because it's genuinely hard to imagine someone coming up with a gem like Gintama again.

I like how you touched on the differences in how Gintoki is being called by each character. It’s something I really paid attention to (in all anime I watch really) but especially here in Gintama it’s so fascinating. Perhaps due to the many characters and relationships they all have with each other (Zura is another one with fascinating dynamics with different characters like Kagura as you mentioned). My favorite would of course be Gin-chan by Kagura it’s just sooo cute. Great video! Your voice is also soothing and reminds me so much of Aleczandxr

Love this review! I agree with you about how every villain is treated as a normal human being and deserves to show their good sides too. I just love the way Sorachi did with the character developments and plot even if it gets side track most of the times, when you'll the whole thing, you'll understand why it was written like that. Those small easter eggs, their parodies, their songs and graphics are just amazing. That's why Gintama will always be my favorite anime/manga.

It took me all the way from October 2020 to April 2021 to watch Gintama. I thought it would be overrated. I mean, come on, a shonen/comedy/slice-of-life with over 300 episodes? That's like half of the stuff I don't like about anime, this is going to suck...
But then, something incredible happened. I liked it, and then I really liked it, and not long after that it had become one of my favourite anime of all time. Gintama is one of those shows that subverts your expectations in all the best ways, and you really can't tell how much you'll fall in love with it until you sit down, buckle up, and give it a chance.
Also, yes, Hasegawa is objectively the best character in Japanese fiction.

It saved 2020 in my opinion because its the best anime ever the funniest anime ever with the greatest anime character AND the greatest opening of all time (Sakura Mitsutsuki)
So don't make the same mistake I did just watch it (skip episodes 1-2 then watch till 265 then the movie "forever yorozuya" then resume the anime then at episode 296 stop watching and watch the ova "love incense" then resume the anime till 367 then semi final then the Final Movie 😭😭😭😭 (I'm sure you all will agree with me that Gintama is the greatest anime of all time and it will be your favorite...

It had already become my favorite anime ever 100 episodes in, but it somehow keeps getting better. Not just the new material, but the old stuff that gets recontextualized. It is undoubtedly the greatest work ever penned by a gorilla.
