Man on a Mission!! I'd still be back at the first nursery only a third of the way through. I like to peruse. I'm new to the indoor plant world, so I want to stop and examine each plant 🪴 and, of course, I would want one of each plant as well. 😅

Haha fair enough !! I have so many plants by now, space is precious :) so it's a more relaxed stroll through the nurseries just looking for something 'special' :)

Always a good time checking out the local nurseries. It will be fun seeing your journey with outdoor gardening and all your flowering natives. We've noticed too that prices drop in Fall over here when the blooms are all gone and growers liquidate inventory . We came away with several large colocasia for dirt cheap as the plant shop didn't want to take up indoor space overwintering them. I'm excited to try them outdoors when it warms back up, because yes they are huge!😻

If i see it right, 4:38 it’s a Colocasia x Fontanesii. It’s an amazing plant, we have a lot of Colocasias. And the “roots” above the ground, they are called “tendril” or “bine”. These can be propagated with this tendrils. It can take root and produce leaves at each node. I love these plants so much. 🤗💚

Really excited to see you’re getting into natives, my other plant-based obsession. Lots of great reasons to get into them- they’re good for the environment, it’s cool to see birds and insects use them (I grow some things to attract butterflies and get caterpillars, for example- adds an entirely different dynamic to the garden experience), and learning about the local ecosystem. It’s a really neat way to interface with the surrounding nature. It also makes going on hikes with iNaturalist and a plant identification app very exciting! You can sometimes propagate from local seeds or cuttings.
Natives also have a steeper learning curve, because a lot of these plants aren’t your standard box store plants with hundreds of tutorials online on how to grow them, nor have all of them been selectively bred to be hardy and resilient. Native plant specialty stores are likely to have plants you can’t really buy in other countries, which is cool.
Looking forward to seeing that native balcony!

No offense intended, growing up in Asia I used to eat alocasia and colocasia (tubers, stems and leaves) cooked in soups with coconut milk or in a dessert. The stems and leaves can either be dried first before cooking or cooked after harvest. The tubers are either boiled and eaten plain or added into soups, fried, or added in a dessert. Although some of them can make your throat itch if not prepared correctly. My apologies for turning your shopping for plants for Tim's garden into a grocery lol

Have you considered Fatsia japonica, or would that be too pedestrian? I call them "poor man's monstera". Their light green tropical look is a nice contrast to darker plants and they are, essentially unkillable. You can cut them very harshly (to the ground) and they'll happily grow right back. They love the heat, can stand the cold, and will grow indoors or out, but they just don't like full sun inland. They also propagate very readily.

Nice mate, watch out with that Banksia speciosa, it's a WA banksia, they don't often do well on the east coast, way too humid for them, even with really good drainage. Lost too many because of it. Speciosa goes somewhat okay on the east coast but humidity, especially humid summers will kill them. I've had issues with occidentalis on the east coast. Probably won't flower here, just trying to survive. Only WA banksia i've had flower has been blechnifolia Good luck though!

@sydneyplantguy You should find a green pot for your oxalis. I bet it would be perfect!

You could get a black magic and put it in the ground as long as it gets water. Put near a downspout or other place water naturally collects. No pot needed. Mine get so big, the flower is like an alocasia flower only larger. Super easy plant. 🪴

I might consider :) the garden beds always stay moist and my other colocasia is loving it in there :)

They are native to australia so makes sense that they aren't popular/available so far away from our climate :)

Mm australia is a very big place with very diverse climate … to my knowledge most banksias don’t actually like humidity so florida might not be the best spot for them :)
