      @@nidodson It's not the game developers fault it's the distributor. They forced them to release a broken mess to early access to not let the hype die rather than give them more time to finish the game. I'm almost certain they never would have released it as is on it's own. That said though the game was probably never gonna be finished because the studio overpromised and underdelivered, it's cost just exceeded the potential gain, which is the studios fault.

    It is a scandal that Steam/Valve are still selling KSP 2 as an early access game, when the developers and publisher are no longer listening to or communicated with players, and advertising a roadmap that cannot and will not be delivered. Mistakes were made in the past seven years, and we can argue about intentions during this time until the cows come home. But the way the game is advertised and sold today is blatantly dishonest gaslighting. There is no excusing this.

      However you wish to apportion blame, Valve are indeed the middle men so they are involved in some way. They are currently handling sales on behalf of the publisher, taking a cut in the process, on a product that comes with false advertising that is published on their platform. They are informed of the false advertising through the in-store reporting tool, so cannot claim ignorance. I accept that in many jurisdictions (though not necessarily all), online marketplaces have no *legal* responsibility on how they are used. But I was not making a legal argument. At the very least, allowing this to continue brings the platform into disrepute.
      You're welcome to disagree with the above. But it is perfectly reasonable opinion that Valve can and should to maintain higher standards in situations where the publisher fails to do so. It would be the right thing to do as the standards on a platform are determined by the worst behaviour that is permitted.

I've said it before, and I'll repeat it again, but if any of us pulled a stunt like Take Two has pulled, selling a product for full price on the promise of what was to come, and then not deliver, we'd be charged with fraud. It's a shame that because they have a big bank account, Take Two can just walk off without facing the consequences.
    I know people will say this has cost them money too, and how they've lost millions in KSP2, but who's fault is that, the people who were conned into parting with their hard earned money??
    It's a pity everyone who's been caught out by this scam - and yes it is a scam - don't get together to see if they could initiate a class action against T2, to get their money back. Not only might they actually succeed, but it would help stop a similar rip off from happening again.

    This video points out why I was so eager to see how they developed interstellar. Think of all the factors you have to take into account. Assuming you have mitigated the extended time factors through stasis for the passengers or by large hydroponics, etc., you still have to decide on a nearby target star, and then accelerate with half your fuel, saving half to decelerate, as you approach. And since you (hopefully) know how fast you will go and thus know the travel time, you must then aim at not where the star is, but where it is going to be in say 20, 40 or however many years it will take to arrive. And nothing can go wrong with deceleration or you will over shoot right past the star and spend forever floating between the stars. And the accuracy of your calculations must be perfect. The distance compared to the respective gravity wells is on the order of firing a bow from a skyscraper in New York and hitting a specific pixel on a high def laptop in Paris. It would be a true accomplishment. Someday we may be able to see it actually simulated in a game other than with a loading screen.

    10:00 There is a misunderstanding of what the ISM (Interstellar Medium) is.
    It's less so atmosphere like, and more so tiny little chunks of ice and gas, which will basically slowly incinerate your sublightspeed vessel, should you even reach about 5% of the speed of light.
    I guess aerodynamics might help a tiny bit, but the speeds are so high, you can't really reflect the ISM. Kind of the same as with gamma rays, despite being light, you can't reflect them, only absorb them.
    It's basically the issue of debris around Earth on steroids. Though a interstellar vessel would probably have some thicker walls, considering radiation concerns as well.
    But the front of such vessel would have to be extremely thick, and it would still not be enough.
    Mind you, the heliosphere extends as far as to the heliopause, where the Solar Wind basically stops but still pushes away the ISM.
    You probably do not want to go in the wrong direction (the direction of travel of the Solar system within the galaxy). Though dealing with radiation is actually a huge problem regardless.
    7:12 With proper gravitational assists, and a proper engine, relativistic speeds would probably still not be achievable.

    9:51 I think interstellar dust, at relativistic speeds could be very destructive. Like nuclear bomb powerful. So you may need something like a very thick shield or active laser system of some kind rather than just an aerodynamic shape. I think Isaac Arthur has probably made a video on the subject. Anyway. Either of these solutions would have probably been infeasible in PHM and I don't think we know how much dust there is in interstellar space. So maybe we can assume it's basically empty.

    Fun fact: back in 0.1.2, you could use a ship exactly like this to reach ridiculous speeds by just timewarping with the ion engines running. Its a comination of a bug (the one you saw happen in this video) and some quircks of how the game does accelerate under timewarp. at high timewarp settings, the EC available on the vessel drops in ‘blocks’ even if you’re providing sufficient EC to run the engines. Now comes the fun part: ion engines run on a resource the game calls ‘xenonEC’ rather than ‘Xenon’ and ‘EC’ seperately. Once a vessel enters accelerate under timewarp, the game keeps the thrust constant (which is why you cant change it or shut off an engine while timewarping) and runs a check on the fuel to determine when it will run out in order to automatically lower timewarp in time. For the Ion engine, it does this check on the ‘XenonEC’ resource, but it really only looks at the Xenon levels. The engine itself however has a check that will turn it off if the vessel ruls out of EC.
    So, lets combine what we know: ion engines shut down when the vessel is out of EC, thrust remains constant when in timewarp until the game thinks you’re about to run out of fuel, and a high timewarp setting will cause ‘chunks’ of your EC budget to dissapear even if the vessel should be receiving enough from generators/solar panels.
    Now let us take a look at what actually happens when you go to maximum timewarp with ion engines running. The EC bug causes your EC to almost immediately drop to zero right off the bat. The engines see this and shut down, which stops them from consuming any Xenon fuel. *but.* Since the game *does not check* EC to determine when you will run out of fuel, *the vessel stays in timewarp and keeps accelerating despite not consuming any fuel* . It’ll continue to do this until the point at which it calculated the vessel would run out of Xenon, despite no further Xenon being consumed. What this essentially boils down to is *the entire DV in the tanks being added to your velocity, without consuming a drop of Xenon* . A kraken drive is born! If you repeat this over and over again it wont take long until you start approaching relativistic speeds. I personally used it to accelerate a tiny probe to 3% the speed of light and leave Kerbols SOI (yes; Kerbol has a SOI in KSP2, but its so massive you wont ever leave it through conventional means. You can see it in map view if you zoom out enough). Im pretty sure some version of this kraken drive is still in the game: feel free to give it a try! Thanks for coming to my ted talk! ;)

    • @ShadowZone
      @ShadowZone  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Fascinating! What is the purpose of looking at "xenonEC" for burn under timewarp? Does the game also conflate CH4 and O2 to "methalox" in this situation?
      Or is this because xenon and EC aren't pulled from the same part (or rather part module?) but from two separate ones and the burn under timewarp feature can't handle that?

    • @thespacepeacock
      @thespacepeacock 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@ShadowZone from what i understand, XenonEC is an example of what the game calls a 'recipe'. most engines just consume resource types individually (methane&oxygen, methane&air, hydrogen,...), but recipes seemingly "compound" a regular resource (Xenon in this case) with another requirement (EC). i'm not sure why the game handles these situations differently than regular engine resource requirements, but i'm pretty sure its what causes a vessel running out of EC not being recognized as a valid reason to kick the player out of accelerate under timewarp

After years of feeling uncomfortable trying it in KSP, I did it almost without thinking in JNO. I'm don't know what made the difference, but JNO's maneuver tool is better than KSP's. It automatically adapts to the scale of transfer you're working at, and it has better text entry.

  • @barefootalien
    @barefootalien 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Not so much with aerodynamics...
    See, the interstellar medium is so sparse that the idea of pressure waves kind of falls apart. There's no meaningful drag even on very fast-moving objects. Instead, each individual particle acts like hard radiation, a cosmic ray with energy appropriate to the relative speed of the ship. This will gradually break down and irradiate the skin of the ship.
    The faster you go, the more energy the particles have, and the more destructive they are.
    So while your ship looks good with its pointy nose, a real interstellar ship will probably more look like it's carrying a great big shield in front of itself. One of the best strategies for that is to use the ship's water storage as its outer shielding. Water is very good at slowing and stopping radiation. That's why we use it to shield spent fuel as it cools, in nuclear power plants, and why it's a good moderator for the reactor core itself. And since we'll need to carry a _lot_ of it, to keep humans alive on journeys of that length, a thick layer of ice or water (in tanks) with metal shielding, possibly with the outer layer of water gelatinized to reduce leaks, in most likely a great big disk out in front of the ship, with a long, narrow vessel design to minimize the diameter of the shield required within the other engineering parameters, is the most likely look for a realistic interstellar vessel.
    There'd be basically zero concern for streamlining, just a flat hammer-faced shield is fine. You'd have to worry about the expansion rate of the universe long before deceleration due to drag. ;)
