This feels like one of those "Amazing Unreal 5 Remakes" of your favorite game that video game websites love to write articles about, but somehow went on to become a full game, without any idea of how to build a compelling story or why the originals were so beloved.
If game companies go down the "It's okay, we'll just fix it after launch." route, then wouldn't "It's okay, I'll just buy it when it's a fixed and fully functional product." be the go to attitude for consumers?
I still rembember the streaming with signs written "We are doing this for you og fans" " we love you guys" on it. and then call them gorillas on twitter because they don't appreciate the new game.
Have you seen the mission where you have to get out of bed and toast the waffle? Its painfully obvious that the devs are trying to be like "uhhuuh look at this haha we're so quirky and relatable right guys"
I love how saints row 3 and 4 predicted the series' own corporate downfall. They were self aware enough to know a new game every few years wasn't a good thing
They were right. Every franchise that pumps out the same game with a new coat of paint is always going to give diminishing returns. It's better to come up with something new and fun than continue to repeat the same formula again and again. Don't get me wrong, I've played plenty of those kinds of games like anyone else. But at some point- you can only play the same game over and over again and be left wanting.

How does it feel having all your favorite developers retire and be replaced in the company by a new generation of young devs who have absolutely no fucking clue how to make a game? Because that's what's been happening to almost every company you loved.
@Mcheetah Don't equate those fucking wastes of space with the rest of us, most of us millennials are working on games right now trying to resurrect the golden age of gaming philosophy of game design, but the amount of red tape and worthless social science cunts that are in the way sitting in positions of influence in most companies are just too much, we're in dire need of an implosion so we can get rid of these shitheads and games can once again be made by gamers, for gamers. Right. Gotta say, it's the internet and online gaming that screwed everything up. I love online gaming as opposed to single player. But by the ps4/Xbox one Era, they reliled on everyone having internet, so they can't patch broken games. To fix old games way back in the day, they needed to send out new discs, or just accept their game is trash.
I'd rather have a buggy game at launch and fixed within a year rather than devs being forced to work long hours just for our sick sense of joy and entitlement. Crunch isn't cool.
@@BoleDaPole As a customer I want full non-broken games for the $60 I spend on it, how the devs make it is not my concern, it's on the devs and their publisher. Although I don't think this is a game for gamers, but for those blue-haired freaks on twitter.
As soon as I saw the interview with the devs saying that it was The Current Year and that the humour and tone of the old games was "problematic", I knew exactly what to expect out of this train wreck.
Problematic elements? The hell are they on about. One of the main characters of this is literally what my black friends consider a stereotype in himself of a Poindexter looking black kid who is over the top nerdy. That's not "progressive" to them. That's just pandering to people who like stereotypes that claim to be positive
The old games let you choose who you wanted to be. It didn't matter that the protagonist was a fat woman with a male British accent that walked into a club with only a towel and a baby bib, we're here to fuck bitches and get money. Meanwhile Johnny Gat takes hold of his Asian identity and doesn't back down from anybody, while being with one of the biggest female stars of his time. Pierce Washington was an amazing black man that you'd actually SLOW DOWN IN A GANG GAME TO HEAR OFF TONE SINGING FROM because you and your best friend were genuinely having a fun time, incredibly smart and talented. Shaundi literally went through a whole PTSD arc after being a girl who fucked around for drugs, then she reclaimed her own identity and sexuality for herself and became the strongest girl in the Saints. I highly doubt the new "diverse" characters could hold a candle to the nuances and complexity of The Saint's. They're problematic because they're reflections of humanity, and we're not exactly the most balanced form of logic and emotion. Played for satire and given great roles.
Honestly, Saint's Row IV would've had the most excuse for reality breaking physics since it was basically the Matrix. The super jumps reminded me The Incredible Hulk Ultimate Destruction.
The protagonists being younger didn't ever really bother me, but it somehow never occurred to me that we'd be dealing with writing from 30-40 somethings who have no idea how 20-somethings actually behave and thus end up with the same out-of-touch dialogue that plagues young adult television.
@@Chamiliatic I'm 31 and I don't imagine 23yo are acting like this. The whole phase of hashtags and social media is really 10 years old now, almost has been.
@digifalc0087 The original Saints Row was great, featuring Johnny Gat, nice graphics, the gritty city of Stilwater, character customization, and hip-hop music, but the flaws is the lack of female player character, less humor, the gameplay being more like GTA: SA, and frame-rate issues. Saints Row 2 makes the original even better, female player character, humor for gameplay, darker tone for story, less GTA gameplay, and dual-wield weapons. The Third considered to be nothing like the first two games (more humor, Steelport, and the changes of Shaundi's appearance) but still had Johnny Gat and Shaundi, as well as more customization options (except clothing, which downgraded). Saints Row IV had super-powers and had alien-invasion story which feels out-of-place for a Saints Row game. Agents of Mayhem is Saints Row as a Crackdown game, but suffers a buggy launch. This game is really nothing like Saints Row and takes place in New Old West-setting with Idols being a rip-off of Sunset Overdrive's Scabs, the player character models being also ripped-off Fortnite's, and even had new characters that past games' characters doesn't return, but at least more customization than past games' customization.
@digifalc0087 Saints Row 2's graphics looks weird compared to the original; instead of keeping colorful visuals with massive lighting effects, here being washed-out, downgraded lighting effects, and the shade of blue/green (Taxi being yellow-green instead of yellow-orange in the original game).
@digifalc0087 And yes, Saints Row 2022 reboot is more like Sunset Overdrive and Fortnite but in the New Old West, with Idols being a rip-off of SO's Scabs and even one of the preset Boss looks like it came from Fortnite.
If they made it a story about a bunch of kids in their late teens, early twenties, who were enamoured by gangs, and they form their own thinking it will be like the movies, only to realise the hard way that it's actually really brutal and nasty, that could have been a compelling story. But this is just sad.
That straight up would’ve been great. Have them be inspired by the SR3 version of the saints and they walk into stuff that you’d encounter in the first two games. That type of plot can write itself.
I don't know if this happens in the game but this is my few cents to your suggestion. They get enamoured by gang life seeing it on tv (movies, series and music) and video games. They get so disillusioned by how it actually is that they think it's easy money and take a go at it. At first things go alright, they are small fish in a big pond and haven't caught any attention yet. Simply selling drugs or something, nothing too big (no murders yet). But eventually they get jumped by the (or one of) the gangs of the city. One of the original crew dies and this serves as a reality check for the crew. Slowly but surely they become the desensitised killers like the Saints in Stilwater and Steelport. Perhaps at the ending of the game one of the crew say they are going with a couple of the gang to start up a new set in a different city. The pc drops the person of at the airport and as that person walks to the terminal the camera pans up to see: "Stilwater departure 5 mins."
"Looking like people who don't play video games but still gets offended by them". Thats some bars dude. Great line. The reason this game and many others have been completely ruined
I remember everyone being VERY skeptical about the game direction (being a reboot without the original cast, and SPECIALLY the kind writing they were going for) and the devs being like "Nah you're all crazy, it's going to be great!" and well here we are. I can forgive bugs and glitches to an extent but honestly the writing is just awful. I'm not saying 3 and 4 were masterpieces or anything but it had actual fun moments. 1 and 2 had a serious tone and portrayed gang violence with a level of seriousness. I think Gman saying this is the "Netflix version" of Saints row really hit the nail in the head: a souless adaptation of a beloved franchise with questionable writing and decharacterization of the cast. Honestly a damn shame, maybe I'm getting old but I don't think I can handle any more "Borderlands" writing in games anymore.
I think they just need to flesh the game out more with a DLC for each of the characters, hopefully even a next-gen release for the ps6 eventually! I know if we all beg Volition they'll invest even more money into this franchise to share it's bountiful boon to the world! I'm positive everyone would give them the money if they invested even more of their money into this game they just need convincing.
Lol to be fair, did you expect the devs to say "you guys are right, this thing we've been paid to work on for years is gonna suck"? Of course they're gonna say it's good regardless of the actual quality. Other than that though, you're on point. Borderlands 3 is such a good game from the looting and shooting but I play it with the dialogue volume on 0...it's that bad.
@@BunnLilah Well they could always roll back on to that one saying "if you dont have anything good to say, then dont say anything at all." like most good devs. but im leaning into the "they are to far deluded" camp at this point as they are really wanting to piss off thier fans in a weird twisted way, so who knows.
When you alienate your core audience, openly call them haters for having concerns, completely abandon the theme of the franchise to try and please a new audience that are never pleased with anything, implement cringe dialogue and overused outdated humor, rush the product out before it's even finished. its not quite like that. my assumption is that its supposed to work like fire hydrants in GTA4 did, water starts going up and when you go over it the water would lift your car up slightly. i think in SR2 the same sort of mechanic with fire hydrants was also used. this is definitely a bug, both in terms of the water textures not showing up and in terms of the broken gravity physics of this game causing anything that goes over a hydrant to shoot to the moon.

The Saints Row series suffers from the same writing issues as Borderlands. The games started out with a somewhat serious tone with some whacky undercurrents, and as the series went along subsequent writers haven't had any ideas beyond "let's crank up the whack". Over time, this caused the stories told to become worse and worse, as there was nothing to ground you in the world. Everything's just nuts. And with this SR "reboot", where they sort of tried to get back to basics after the insanity that was SR4 and Gat out of Hell, they still couldn't reel in the whackiness and just kept going. They could have taken the SR franchise in a new and interesting direction by starting off with a clean slate, but no, instead they brought us this... thing...
God if that aint the truth. You can even draw a line of BL1 and SR2, BL2 and SR3, Pre Sequel and SR4, and now this trash fire and the permanently muted BL3. It’s downright eerie in fact. First there was the most grounded entry with a drier wit than the rest, then one that relied way too much on lol-random humor but had some backbone to fall back on, then the (IMO) peak where the absurdities are balanced between tongue and cheek cynicism and callbacks to previous entries, and then you get the absolute worst where there’s all the annoyances of BL2/SR3 without any of that backbone because its all so by the numbers “random quirky lol” garbage.
The series lost its charm on me when they renamed "Rim Jobs" to "Jim Robs" feels like the total opposite of SR2, where that game risked with some of its themes and dialog, this game looks like its playing it safe.. too safe
It’s a constant trend for many things of media recently and no matter if you dislike it, it’s becoming inevitable. In WD2, it make sense to be all skinny and not so intimidating, because they mainly stay out of sight and are not usually exposed to great firefights, they don't need to strike fear or handle huge weapons with tons of recoil. In this game, where you literally build a gangster empire and spend most of the time shooting at other gangs, having characters that intimidate so little or don't look serious at all feel like they don't belong at all in here
The characters in WD2 didn't offend me. Your Mileage May Vary, of course, but these... preening, smirking hipsters, spouting hashtags... Are supposed to be the people I want to spend fifteen to thirty hours with? I'm pretty sure even when I was still a twenty-something, the idea that the designers thought these people were even a funhouse-mirror version of me, their target customer, would irritate me right out of a sale.
I'd like to mention that one of the selling points was customization. How good and advanced it was. They didn't add wear options, you know that thing gives saints row 1 and 2 more outfit options than GTA despite having only a fraction of the clothing options. Watching this I have some theories about the physics. Remember how in Saints Row IV the car driver AI was specifically designed to be extra wacky because it was a simulation? Well if the animation, combat, and other systems were copied directly over, seems possible the car physics was too, without taking into account that this one isn't supposed to take place in The Matrix.
@@tantona9315 Well I meant specifically how the AI seems to go out of its way to crash into each other and glitch out and go flying even without a hydrant's help.

@@gotchamocha As OP said, this has been said to them over and over, the game has been mocked by the fanbase and everyone else since it was first shown, they ignored and they insulted us over it, they went the "they're just haters" and "they'll love it when it comes out, they just don't know it yet" route, they're in denial and it's near impossible to slap that out of someone. They have possibly murdered the saints row franchise with this game.
I enjoyed SR3, but SR and SR2 had that perfect blend of treating the main story seriously while stuffing the side missions with over-the-top wackiness. The murder of Aisha, Gat's revenge against the Ronin boss, and the increasingly personal rivalry between the Boss and Nero were just fantastic. After SR3, the franchise just went absolute bat guano crazy, and the new reboot seemed like it was trying to appease both crowds but ended up appeasing neither.
There was some junk in the older games, but I don't remember it being this bad. One of my favorite SR2 moments is my car suddenly becoming allergic to the road and ending up on the roof if a six story building.
There was jank, especially in SR1. But it was still fun. I mean, look at Fallout and Elder Scrolls. Both are INCREDIBLY janky. But they're still a ton of fun to play. Same goes for SR1-4 (and even Gat Out of Hell to some extent). But the SR reboot just feels like some indie dev tried to make a SR3 clone, and didn't really understand what made SR3 fun to begin with.

Problematic... to people too stuck on Twitter to bother playing video games in the first place.

Why are the other Saints gang members fat?

“But muh student loans”

Saints Row 2 was literally incredible, arguably better than GTA at the time. I remember spending the weekend hunting the easter eggs with my cousin in SR2.
@@TXFDA SR1 jank was tied to the Xbox you were playing on. Play it on Xbox 1 and it is virtually glitchless (ignoring multiplayer)
When El Johnny Gato came back from the dead and said "It's saintin time" I literally burst into tears and started hysterically crying. Truly the new Saints Row played on the Wii console is the saint of modern games.
Edit: spelling
Isn't Johnny Gato the main character of Shrek 4: Rise of Puss in Boots? The game about Anthony Burch trying on his wife's boyfriend's combat boots?
You probably haven’t even watched morbius but it’s a good movie people just love to copy others jokes till they die out and become as unfunny as a Disney sitcom
@@PatternLand nah, morbius is legit awful and deserves all the criticism it gets
@@jamesduncan6729 very troll response you it’s litterally better than some of the marvel movies that have come out in the last 20 years
@@PatternLand I hope you're being paid well to post something like that, because there's no way you're being honest. It has the look and feel of comic book movies from the mid 2000's. It's dated and low quality, right from the first scene, not to mention how badly written it is. I don't think you've even seen it, you must be trying to be a contrarian or something. If you've really seen the film, you wouldn't think it was very good
"Stop blocking me, I gotta take a shit!" broke me as well. Honestly an Oscar-worthy monologue. I couldn't breathe for a moment there due to laughing so damn hard. Thank you, Gman.
@Sunny Castus Balls balls balls of STEEL?
Oh man yeah, tears in the eyes and all, thanks gman!
The amount of effort it took for him to say shit was wonderful.
Lmao, btw, similar NPC line already was in a GTA game (San Andreas more specific) - "MOVE! I GOTTA TAKE A DUMP!"
I miss the good days when games were enjoyable, addicting & aesthetically pleasing. 2018 feels like 10 years ago in the gaming world.
Fortnite battle royale
2018?
You serious?
Lmao what? The golden age was 05-12, 18 was well into the downward spiral toward the current rut we're in
They'll be saying the same thing about this decade in 10 years
Honestly removing edgy humour was already enough to turn me off. It was a staple of the franchise. I personally prefer 1 and 2, 2 being my favourite personally as it blended story and comedy seemlessly and delivered both laughs and hard hitting moments, but all of them had that tongue in cheek edge to it. Rim Jobs being the mechanic shops name always made me chuckle. I'm sick of watering this shit down.
Man I could use a rimjob rn. My trunk is broke :(
2 is my favourite too. I played that again recently. Good times.
@im calling saul mr goodman why did you reply with an air fryer potato wedge tutorial?
It was weird that they changed the buff/sexy saints npcs into weak fat soyjaks
@@shark_byte_clips bots, it's an invasion of bots that has been ongoing for quite sometime now.
I love the irony of a a game dev company which by definition is capitalist writing in shitty dialogue dunking on capitalism and completely missing the mark. The more woke people get the dumber their ideas are.
Did the same shit in tiny Tina, which is even more ironic is they aren't just capitalist, the companies that employ them and the companies that own those companies are Uber rich with some of the scummiest monetization practices ever realized within capitalism.
@@AlexDestroyerOfEarth Honestly since when have anyone took anything that even *remotely* involves Randy B*tchford seriously anyways? Man's a clown and he always has been. I know for a while he hasn't been involved with the gaming side of Gearbox but he somehow still has the audacity to show his face at some events as recent as the latest Gamescom a couple days ago. He is a human clownfiesta and honestly at this point, he should cut his losses, retire and beat it to underage girls (as he does apparently), in his home. Maybe some people has a soft side for Gearbox because of their earlier titles but at this point with everything that came out about him and his certain associates, even from the era when they were making decent games and the stuff that went on during their developments, with the toxic culture that surrounded the company and finally their butchering of Aliens Colonial Marines because of their greed and incompetence should/should've been enough for people to just stop following/enabling his bullsh*t. Can't believe people are still buying games from them especially after how they released a glorified DLC as a standalone game, spitting on peoples faces. Yes there was a try at reviewbombing at start bu then fizzled out really quickly. People have been "cancelled" for far lesser offences and this f*cker's still out there thriving. Yuck.
I love the low IQ brain dead people who constantly cry about everything being woke, when they're literally just so dumb you have to wonder how they actually manage to remember to breath in and out.
It has nothing to do with being "woke", it has nothing to do with "SJWs".....It has literally EVERYTHING exactly the same as the first 3 games while having some mechanics from 4 thrown in.....The character stereotypes are EXACTLY the same as they would be in the first 3 games, the only difference is they took out LMFAO dildo bats that the low IQ love, the 30 something criminal types and made them 20 something hipster zoomers...
Hipster zoomers doesn't mean woke, the majority of people who constantly cry about woke, generally don't even have the slightest clue what woke actually is...anything involving da wemonz, da peoplez of colorz or yung people doesn't suddenly mean woke
Can we just appreciate Brilliance of Saints Row 2 , apart from the Missions and Activities that Game Will let you play as a Taxi Driver a Medic a Troll tuck Driver.
If we count the side Acitivity you can be a Cop and Body guard of a Celebrity. New Saints Row is a Disgrace to the Original one and The Peoples who Worked on it. I still remember that radios will announce clothing discounts in the stores and inform the pedestrians about Grand theft. Pedestrians also had more life and random evens like in RDR 2.
12:42 moment was golden, it absolutely killed me too :D
I really wish we had just gotten a real sequel to Saints Row 2 that wrapped its Dex plot up and kept that level of character customization.
Agreed.
Although I could've sworn there was something that wrapped up the Dex plot. A crappy mobile game spinoff, or maybe a DLC?
I distinctly remember reading that the main character goes to Las Vegas to kill him.
