WOW....this video was life changing....I've always been the person who just mindlessly sings in the shower, sing all the time but never improves...but this changed everything. That mistake #4 really hit me. Focusing on what FEELS good for the voice and your body instead of it sounding good...I swear in the process of this video I noticed a direct and dramatic improvement in my voice just by realizing this!! Thank you so much!

Thank you for your generosity in telling us.
What he wish he had known:
0:55 don't only practice/warm up by singing songs
1:46 singing requires the undoing of bad habits. You were born screaming. That voice is no different than the one used to sing.
2:19 fix: do things that are creating the fundamentals to doing sound that are not tied up with those bad habits you learned over time. Get out of the idea of singing and into the idea of creating noise. Allow yourself to be free and make weird sounds. Using isolated exercises that target specific muscles. Get these from his subscription service.
4:09 how to practice. No matter whose training program it is, know that vocal cords are delicate and prone to permanent damage if used improperly. There is a limit to how long you can use it every day. Try not to vocalize for more than an hour every day. 20 minutes should be enough. An hour should be for strengthening and improving the voice, not for warming up to get it ready. Don't sing for more than an extra hour or two. Unless you're a professional, no more than 3 hours a day.
6:33 getting louder as you go higher (cross ref: his secret to singing higher notes video). Every note we are able to sing, we should be able to sing it quietly. If one can't do this, they have no business trying to sing it loudly.
    7:01 the remedy. Four things.
    1. Breathing. Labored/chest heavy is what causes louder notes. Rather, keep the chest relaxed. Every time we breathe {in}, we allow the stomach to come out. Breathe out, stomach comes in. Make the lower abs kick. To activate: Cough, then say "ah, ah." Chest should not rise as you sing.
8:05 2. Larynx. If it's going up as you go to higher notes, you'll feel like you have to push more air pressure/volume to get those notes. Mum mum mum exercise.
8:25 3 What are jaw/tongue/muscles on the outside of larynx doing? We only needed lower abs and vocal cords. No tight jaw. Instead drop the jaw.
9:20 4 Widening of mouth as the vowels get higher? Problem! Don't spread the mouth as the notes get higher.
9:47 Fix: he shows how. Relaaaax (lol). ah ah ah ah ah exercise
10:07 That was an example of getting louder as they go higher. Now for getting softer as they go higher. Start louder on the bottom and quieter on the top. (He shows how)
    Mistake 3:
10:38 This would have shaved off years of work for him. Not working on falsetto. Many coaches/singers profess doing a connected sound versus an airy sound (he shows what it sounds like)
    2 problems with this:
1 Falsetto is often used in modern music
2 A lot of beginning singers cannot make a released connected sound (he shows example). Falsetto shows them how, and you can build on that foundation of release. Don't be afraid to go in falsetto. Don't be afraid to allow your voice to break. To avoid that break, people will often squeeze and push to make it through that break, which will cause severe habitual problems.
12:20 remedy. Allow it to break (he shows example). That's where we begin to find our mix, where both registers come together (*Makes Tarzan noises*) A break bounces between the mouth and head. A mix is in the middle, where both operate at the same time.
Also gives flexibility to start from falsetto, move to full voice sound. (He shows example)
Starting from falsetto, and being able to connect, you're gonna be in much better shape vocally because you have ultimate control.
    13:32 Mistake 4
Trying to sound good at all costs
    Stops improvement
They ironically will develop bad habits that make them sound bad
Instead focus on the sounds *feeling* good. Learning what feels good (throat relaxation etc),
Focus on mindfulness of the body. Being aware in the present of the body. It will improve your sound after.
    15:26
    Being mindless.
Doing entire songs and getting lost in the Instead, dissect songs and improve small aspects if you do the whole thing at once. Line for line- not the chorus/verse, but what is the singer doing? Chest? Full? Mix? Breathy? But breaking it up, you'll also notice the pitches too on each line.

Thank you so much for this video! I used to have a damaged voice and I started working on mixed voice. It s been so challenging to sound bad with good technique for a while , and to have cracks as an adult singer with stage experience and all that. And also not being able to know when I’m gonna be ready for stage. It took me 1 year and a half to kill most of my bad habbits , heal my damage for good and now my carrer went to next level. Guys , if you really wanna sing, don t waste time and get a great coach and learn mixed voice! It is totally worth it!

One big thing I have picked up from watching a bunch of videos of a similar fashion to this is; if it hurts to sing, you're doing something wrong. Singing with pain is a one way ticket to ruining your voice. Also proper breathing, it's helped me so much with being able to sing more properly. And tension is wrong in pretty much every case because most people will use the wrong kind of tension, me included. So I don't. I have only "practiced" singing by singing. I like to sing similar to the singer I'm listening to instead of singing the same way for every song. I pretty much do an impression of the singer I'm listening to while I'm singing, which makes me experiment with my voice while singing different songs. And that's what keeps my interest in singing going

Thank you buddy for this video. I am 33 and I started taking classes 2 years. I can already feel and hear the difference. I also started piano and drums and I have to say, singing is by far the hardest because if you weren't lucky enough to avoid picking up bad habits growing up, understanding your voice and how your body produces sound (which you covered masterfully) is key to become a better singer.

  • @WideCuriosity
    @WideCuriosity 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

Yeah, but what I really need to know is whether you have a subscription service course. Could you add some info on whether you have please. Otherwise, nice summary of relevant points.
Edit, notes I made for myself. Maybe someone else will find them useful
Don't just sing songs to practice/warm up. It doesn't result in improvement as you retain individual bad habits rather than address them.
Don't overpractice. 20 minutes to an hour is enough without stress the voice. Plus, at most, an extra hour or two actually singing.
Avoid getting louder at higher pitches. You need to sing at low volume too. Breathe from the diaphragm to avoid anxiety. Keep the larynx low. Drop jaw/tongue to give good resonant chamber. Avoid spreading vowels/mouth at higher pitches.
Practice falsetto. It's used in modern music and not something to shy away from or be embarrassed about. Practice switching between registers in a released way. Accept there will be breaks to work on when you mix them.
Accept you aren't going to automatically sound perfect, improvement means working through the not great period until you get where you want to be. A good tactic is to concentrate on how it feels rather than how it sounds. Be mindful of what your body's doing.
To sound good for a particular track, break it down line by line and work out how each part should be performed. This improves the whole.

I have been practicing singing for some time now, and I have improved a lot actually! I would like to improve my consistency in my falsetto. Usually I am able to sing up to an A5 with decent technique. On exceptional days however, I am able to sing into the 6th octave! Sometimes on not so great days (at least for my falsetto) I have trouble singing above a C#5 or a D5, although I can usually manage up to an E5. I actually have improved in my falsetto, but as I stated earlier, I would like to improve its consistency. If I can get any tips, that would be appreciated!

The main & current way I practice singing is by singing along with songs in the morning that involve the bottom of my range so I can extend it. Sometimes I only hum along with those songs and other times I'll actually sing. I like to do that as a warm up in case I feel like singing more demanding songs later in the day that involve belting and the mixed voice (which I stopped going straight into). And every time I sing (even though I RARELY warm up with scales, which I know is something I need to fix) it feels very used but it also feels very relaxed. And I don't really do anything for my voice (speaking in terms of avoiding certain foods) except use the proper technique to things. Even though I could be taking better care of my voice, am I doing things okay for the moment?

I really wish I could afford your lessons. But I don't even have the money to buy a pencil. (My mom has all the money, I'm basically a freeloader. Plus no one is hiring me for some reason even though the stores and restaurants in my area need employees.)

    Prayer of Praise 😙❤
Now all glory to God, who is able to keep you from falling away and will bring you with great joy into his glorious presence without a single fault.
All glory to him who alone is God, our Savior through Jesus Christ our Lord. All glory, majesty, power, and authority are his before all time, and in the present, and beyond all time! Amen.

Amazing content Amigo! Thanks for sharing. I am a salsa guitarrist but would love to sing more naturally and with confidence. Do you have any advice on how to improve playing and singing at the same time?

For me, it's just takes practice. Maybe it's not the same for you. Just find what works. I practiced while looking at sheet music.
