    I was granted the privilege to be this kids Dad for the 11 months he was in our country and little community of Sanford. I love the kid and very proud of him, and I know everything about his successful year. Our school and town gave him values and ideas he took home, and during his time he very well gave to us as well. He is a true example of what exchange is all about.

    This kind of talking is pretty standard in Europe. We don't sugarcoat thoughts or opinions. Take it or leave it style. If you take offense it's your problem and you'll get over it. If you accept the answer with open mind, even better. If you ask we answer how we feel it. I am surprised how many people in comment section compliment about the honesty. Shouldn't honesty be a norm in every culture? 🙃 BTW I'd say for Czech standards he was still very "diplomatic" about it LOL

Some were from Germany, France, Ireland, England, Barbados, The Bahamas, Spain, Russia, Czech Republic and my roommate was from South Africa. It was super cool because I learned a lot of things from them and their culture and on the holidays that they celebrated in their country they would make dished that smelled amazing in the kitchen (common area) then there is me just basic and from Texas.

    As someone with a foreign background that have lived in the US for a while now I can assure you that despite all their shortfalls as a people Americans are still the best Westerners I can think of living with. But if there is one thing I came to notice as soon as I got here it was definitely the highly level of abundance and waste. Big trucks, big burgers, big coffee cups all the way to big men and women.

    • @robertscovill3533
      @robertscovill3533 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They truly seem to believe that big and much means better, while everywhere else in the world people know that this is just the opposite of good quality. But I see here a generic problem with quality. Can't imagine somebody in Europe spending a lot of money for a house build out of card board and wood sticks and covered with shingles - unless it's a chicken shed or so :)

    • @Harpazo_to_Yeshua
      @Harpazo_to_Yeshua 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +Robert Scovill Now you see how effective the brainwashing is by BIG corporations here, especially because we're so blocked off from Europe and other countries by two huge oceans. If the US bordered Europe, things would be a lot different. Big corporations and media would have to change to make money then.
      It's all about the $$$. Government, media and corporations, all working together to screw us over in one form or another, in bad "education", bad food (processed, chemicals, hormones, etc.), car quality was crap for decades, etc.

    • @robertczwartek119
      @robertczwartek119 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      +Northaleus Velanthor I think you've got the point. But still for somebody in Europe this type of thinking, without knowing much about the world and seeing several other countries to compare is quite a shock. You rather expect being brainwashed and uniformed from people living in Russia or Korea or so, but not in such a modern and "rich" western country like USA. I still know how we wonder watching the news about whole villages being gone after a tornado - we think, how can this be. Now when I see how the homes are build in USA I don't wonder anymore. My mother used to say, If you don't like your neighbor, you kick his house and will be with your foot in his living room :). Also when a house in Europe burns, nothing burns but the furniture inside, you replace it, paint the walls, change doors and windows and your home is like before. But as you mentioned, it is probably all about the money - You have lost everything so you got the money from the insurance. I just think, while there are so many severe weather conditions in USA, everything should be more solid and stable and better quality then in any European country, but just the opposite is the case. And some people pay millions for it, just because it's big ;)

    • @ibenzawla
      @ibenzawla 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Robert Czwartek Agree. America is indeed a very unusual place. It's probably the only the place I know where people actually act against their interest and they are very passionate about it. Universal health care as an example is beneficial the most to the less fortunate in society but weirdly they are the ones that are mostly against it. The people are not suffusticated enough to know what their political representatives are doing and so they are highly vulnerable to the corporate money men that control the media. A dark agenda can easily be pursued in a situation like that. Division and finger pointing thrives as the money pain gradually usurped all the power that used to belong to the people. Maybe someday the people will wake up.

    From what I’ve picked up from Americans I’ve met in England. Also from relatives and friends opinions after visiting. You are way more positive than we are here in the UK. You have much more space but there’s more segregation between races. You have everything there as it’s much larger than the whole of the European continent. I think it’s easier to be successful out there. I wish I had moved out there when younger. I have an auntie and uncle who emigrated in the sixties. They only come back to visit and buy clothes. As they have lots of air miles and say the clothes are better quality over here in the UK.

    • @erickr.8977
      @erickr.8977 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm going to say this even though it's 6 months late. You're definitely not going to see major segregation in the USA. The reason Americans are probably happier is because the whole of the USA has amazing weather and many different types of climates with the tundra, Rainforests, Tropical Rainforests Deserts, Swamps, Mountain Ranges, Plains etc... All being within our borders as well as our States being like their own countries within the country with them all having a different culture, Accent, Different official languages etc... You also have to see that the American culture is a Culture made up of cultures from around the world as well and i mean a person can travel from the freezing weather of Alaska to the warm weather of Hawai'i or even the humid weather of Louisiana without a passport or even by Car (In the mainland 48 States) even though it may take you 4,8,10,12,14 hours for you to get to that destination and with it being like you've traveled to a whole other country with how different some states can be. I also have to agree that Clothes outside of the USA are way better than in the USA (I don't really know exactly why) Also its not easy to become successful in the USA but there are opportunities around every corner you just have to look for them.

    "Their education is really poor"
    Yup. And I'm blaming the education system. Like, I know the quadratic formula: x equals negative b, plus or minus the square root of b squared minus 4 a c, all over 2 a. But I don't know how to function in society once I graduate. I also don't know how to freaking spell to save my life because they are literally like: here's the word. I'm only going to show this to you once. Got it? No? Oh well. Go and try to function now. (Gets to high school) write me an essay. Spelling counts. But I'm not going to tell you how to spell a word if you get it wrong, I'm just going to circle it. JFKDJFJDBROFJ. Well, that's my school at least. Also, the majority of us are depressed, stressed, sleep-deprived, anxious, dead inside, and dehydrated. And if you miss a day of school, you're digging your own grave. Even if you were in the hospital. What is wrong with my school? (I could literally go on for ages but I'm going to stop now)

    I'm somewhat glad to say at least to my school's standards I belong to that 10% thus making me one of the few geography nerds here. They don't even know basic things like how the UK consists of 4 countries and England is one of them, not the same thing... They don't even have a rough idea of the metric system and if they were attentive enough they could find traces of it in the US (ex. 5K runs) we have those here. I just graduated from middle school so I can't say this is applicable for my highschool but it probably will be.

    Most Americans knowledge of geography is horrible. And this even includes those who attend elite universities. It's a national disgrace and I blame the educational bureaucrats for the most part.

      This was shot in North Carolina. I don't doubt that what you're saying is true, but I do agree that most of the students at our school aren't very intelligent. I'm only speaking for our school in particular, so I'm not trying to say anything about the American or North Carolinian school system in general. Matej's opinion was formed after spending one year in one American high school, so I don't know if he can accurately judge the nation as a whole either.

    • @christiangainey1223
      @christiangainey1223 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's true...If he went to a high school in New England, perhaps he would feel differently.

      As my friend Garret said, my opinion was only made from one high school after one year..Even in Czech every school is different and I have no idea if my school in NC was a normal high school or not..

    • @christiangainey1223
      @christiangainey1223 10 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Well at least you're aware of this and are being objective...I've seen exchange students have negative experiences and then blame and judge all 1/3 of a billion Americans...and then I've seen exchange students understand that one negative experience is not reflective of the entire nation and American society...So thanks for being aware and unbiased! :D

    This is typically an American college freshman syndrome: I'm so smart and everyone else is so dumb. Usually, maturity changes that young way of thinking. People are smart in all sorts of ways, sometimes in ways that aren't immediately apparent.

      @Martytoofree 8 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      +Steve Finlay it is difference between "smart" and "educated" he spoke about common knowledge, that seems to be lower than in europe, that doesn't necesserily mean that they are stupid, and yea people who ask taht if in europe we can see moon, are not causing impression of being smart
