    I've been wet shaving for about 2 1/2 yrs now and have not gone back to a cartridge razor 🪒 My first DE shave drew blood too. But what a shave it was. Never felt smoother and never realized that I could actually enjoy it as well. I felt so relaxed afterwards like I was in zen mode lol. Seriously though, I find it to be like a form of meditation. Wishing you many more shaves my friend. Be well and stay blessed

    Refreshing and humorous to watch the difference between your video you posted hours ago and this one that TH-cam put up as a recommendation of your first shave.
    How slow and nearly scared you appear here vs how confident you are now with speed and precision. How quickly you shave is one thing I like about your channel and videos. Other guys still act like they are afraid their going to slit their throat. It's called a safety razor for a reason, and is not a straight blade.

    It was fun to see your first DE shave. You were being cautious, which is a good thing. I went very slowly for my first shave also. Now I am 7 months into wet shaving and will never go back to cartridge razors (unless I have carry on luggage when travelling). I don't remember drawing as much blood as you on my first shave but every face is different. When I watch you shave now, you go at lightning speed compared to the shave on this video. I would say it took me 6 months to really dial in my lathering and shaving technique. So a word of advice for newbies. Be patient. Go slowly and keep at it. Within a few months, your technique will improve dramatically.

      I know what you mean. I've been de shaving for only 2-ish months now and still dialing in the blades and techinque. I get better then I do something dumb and ingrown hair city for the next shave. Still, this is much better than cartridge shaving and the damn irritation it always caused me. I stopped shaving for 10 yrs and just grew beards or goaties with only electric shave. I'm glad I looked into DE shaving.

    Hi Kevy,
    I didn't know you had only been De shaving for only four years. I have been De shaving for about 35 years and started with a de razor because I found shaving a real drag. So I went out and bought a Simpsons X2L brush, a tub of Taylors "Barber shop" shaving cream and used a Gillette razor that I had sort of inherited. It was a lovely Razor owned by a relative and was broken down and stored in the top of a clothes brush. He had been an Army officer in WWII but it was good quality, not like the A S & CO Razors that were issued. It is only about the last 10 years I took more of an interest buying a 34c, a Muhle r89 and a De89 Jagger. Very recently I have started watching fine chaps like you on TH-cam and started spending a lot more money on Razors, soaps, brushes & blades!! Just received the sure grip handle for my Outlaw today. I really love it. Tomorrow the King C Gillette and blades should be arriving. The problem is having to wait for bristles to grow again so I can try another new razor. I have unused ones piling up!!
    Stay safe Sir!!
    Dave.

It's great to see the origins of your channel and how far you have come. I am fairly new to wet shaving and treading my way through each and every shave, just three months in. I started out as a Supply single edge adjustable razor candidate and just recently graduated to a Rockwell T2 SS adjustable. I’m pretty sure the razor blades are the issue with me and causing some issues with me so watching your first shave gives me inspiration to keep on going until I get it right! Today, after three months, I had my first BBS shave with no cuts or blood drawn. Thank you for your inspiration.

      Great to hear your story Stuart. It's the best feeling when you've just started out and you have your first comfortable, drama free shave right?! Everything just seems to click. Keep going and try different blades. As your skin adjusts and gets more used to having a sharp blade dragged over it, your shaves will improve for the better. All the brst. Kevy 😃

    I'm a regular watcher, and this just popped up in my recommended videos. It's crazy how things have changed! You should definitely revisit this. I think you'll get a kick out of it. You're holding that thing like it's a 2 headed rattlesnake vs now, like it's just a stick of butter. Good job barely aging in 7 years. So... this explains the great styptic shortage of 2015.

      Hi Kieran. Thanks so much for your positive words. It's always nice to read comments like that. I'll bet it felt weird after the beard came off right? Welcome to the wonderful mad world of wet shaving! There's plenty of videos on here to check out reviews on soaps, brushes, razors etc to help you decide what you. Isn't like to try. Samples are always a good place to start. Let's you try out some soaps before committing to paying for a whole tub. All the best. Kevy 👍

    Hi Kevy. I've been wet shaving for 3 years now. My first DE shave was with Shick Classic DE razor ( wilkinson sword in the UK ) and it was disaster. I had terrible cuts and burn all over my face and neck. Then I bought a dirt cheap plastic set by Dorco and it was like blessing. I guess the blade exposure was just right for beginners. Then I had my first metal razor - a modest TTO Timor which served me obediently for a year. Interestingly, I was quite satisfied with it and my Derby blades. I used a Nivea cream and aftershave and that was about it. Well, my Timor kicked the bucket and it's when this whole thing started. Now I have 10 different razors in my rotation, have about 5 year stock of blades, creams , soaps, not to mention a cool collection of vintage blades( the oldest one is made in 1945), a straight razor by Parker, and about 20 different aftershaves, the most cool being an original 1968 Old Spice. This is what I received from my wife as a NY present-an American Crew aftershave toner, a Bulgary XMan aftershave balm, and a 100 pack of Feathers. I know I have to get it under control somehow. Do you think we should stop it at some point?

    Your braver than me recording your first go at it. Mine was pretty similar with little nicks all over my neck and some pretty bad razor burn. Had to steal my wife’s thick foot lotion to calm the burn. I thought after 30+ years if cartridge shaving and watching others on TH-cam “how hard can it be?” . Glad you stuck with it and glad I have too. I’ve cut myself far worse with a disposable and cartridge than I have with a safety razor. It’s just going to happen unless you don’t shave at all or use an electric.

      Kevy Shaves You certainly done better than me and my first shave Kevy 😉
      Although I have only been DE shaving around seven weeks, I feel like my technique has improved a little, although I have still a long way to go.
      I had a shave this morning and it’s about the third time I’ve used TOBS.
      The mistake I made this morning was I had my brush a little bit too wet, so my lather was a bit thin, but despite this the TOBS still provided a really comfortable shave despite my little mistake.
      I suppose it’s good I realised where I went wrong and I can always rectify this on my next shave, it’s all about trying different things or different ways and seeing which you personally find the best. Really enjoying using the TOBS. I find I can smell the Sandalwood for hours after I shave. Looking forward to slowly working my way through the rest of their range 🙂

    • @kevyshaves4109
      @kevyshaves4109  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, it takes a bit of time to get used to this way of shaving. TOBS Sandalwood is a beautiful cream. Keep at it and definitely, experiment with your lather technique, adding water or trying different brushes to make a lather. There's so many different ways to do things in wet shaving. That's why it's so much fun. Cheers. Kevy 😀👍

I use a Merkur Futur and would have probably bled to death if I had it at that angle. I wish I would have recorded my first DE Shave! Even though I had shaved with a DE when I was younger; I was a little nervous. Thank goodness, no cuts or nicks but, I found out what RAZOR BURN IS ALL ABOUT!!!!!!. I like you, watched tons of videos before deciding to begin the DE experience. I started DE shaving just after Christmas of 2015. So I am still somewhat of a NOOB at this. I have learned a lot though the shaving community, blogs, forums and you tube. I struggled with razor burn for the first couple of months because I was trying to attain the infamous BBS SHAVE!
    However, I have finally found DE shaving very comfortable and have been able to really relax and enjoy the shaving experience.
    I didn't find this "comfortable place" until I started to "shim" my razor with another DE blade. I am still using the shimmed razor shave but, I am now trying to determine if I'm going to buy another razor that is a little more efficient.
    Your video brings back vivid memories. Thanks

    Welcome to the world of DE shaving! Good advice you have been given so far. I would recommend mapping your face. Learn which way your hair grows and you can get better shaves. Also depending on your skin type and how often you shave a two pass sytem may be more beneficial. Some people can not go against the grain because of their skin type. If you shave every day like me then going against the grain in a three pass system may cause irritation.
    Good job for the first time and again welcome.

I chose the Derby blade for my first shave because in the videos I watched they were referred to as less sharp and more smooth so I thought that would calm my nerves somewhat. I've since used the treet platinum super superior stainless blade. And I would highly recommend that for beginners.

      RICHARD Clark Thanks for sharing that Richard. I still think of myself as a beginner. And believe me, your skin will improve with each shave. Cheers. Kevy 👍

    Kevy looked good - use a light touch, most of us were probably too heavy when we started. Also use shorter strokes; this will allow you to concentrate on being lighter. Finally, just do two passes for now until you face catches up; use both a toning after shave splash and then when dry a balm. Performance will improve a hundred fold with each shave. After your second pass you were rocking it! Shave was tight!

    Thanks for uploading. My first DE shave was 1 week ago. I'm still finding my feet, my first three shaves went very well but my fourth had a few red dots like yours. I think like others are saying, I'm paying too much pressure. Changing to an Astra blade next, it may be the (free) Muhle blade too, I've heard it's quite aggressive. Anyway, I've subscribed and looking forward to tracking your progress and having some fun learning! Dale (Wigan)

    Hahahahaaa....this is absolutely fantastic to see Kevy. I caught wind of this video after already seeing many of your other ones. You've clearly come a VERY long way; which gives me much hope as I've been trying to get a handle on this thing for years now but kept getting SEVERE razor bumps/ingrown's. (Check my post 'journey towards a BBS dream' on B&B to see the gruesome photos) so I kept laying it to rest.
    Thanks to videos like yours and the likes of 'Nick shaves' and 'Geo Fatboy' I've picked it back up again. This time, paid more attention and have started using it as my main method of shaving.
    This is addictive stuff as I'm buying product just to add to the collection but the intangible (and tangible) feeling is great.
    Keep them videos coming.

    • @kevyshaves4109
      @kevyshaves4109  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Wow! What a very interesting thread on B&B. Some brilliant advice from the folks on there for you in your quest. Brilliant to read that you're still sticking with it. It does take a while to get technique down and many, many shaves trying out different products to find out what works best for you. That's the thing; advice from others is great, but the only way to find out if something works for you as an individual, is to try it a few times for yourself.
      It's taken me two and a bit years to get to where I am but I'm still looking to try different combinations in a shave to see what works. That's the bit I really enjoy. I cant see past the Rockwell 6S for giving me a consistently great shave. How are you getting on with yours?
      Great to read your story. Stick with it and I'm sure it'll all come good. All the best. Kevy 😀

      Yesterday's shave was based on your beginning videos: Merkur 34C Personna blade...I used the Razorock plissoft brush with Tabac soap. (it didn't leave any slickness on my face between passes, but wasn't bad during the shave.) Then Thayers cucumber ( I prefer lemon or rose) witch hazel, and then Fine Green Vetiver splash.
      I think to get an even better shave I would use KShaveworks soap or Cella, with Thayers lemon, and clubman pinaud splash. I'm going to try that tonight (It'll be the second use on the blade.)

    Hi Kev, just catching up with your videos which I discovered last week. I started DE shaving about a year before you so interesting to compare your experiences with mine. This shave was very similar to my first lots of little nicks! Biggest lesson - no pressure at all , don't even be tempted. Also don't go against the grain to start. I am now learning to use open comb razor technique with a Fatip Piccolo and a Muhle R41 both really aggressive - I nicked myself with those too though i was ok with a Merkur Futur. Incidentally where di you get your Catie's Bubbles? Good luck and all the best! Dave

      Instead of going straight down on the first pass, i go across the grain on that area. This seems to help. In some shaves, i forget and when i go straight down on the 1st pass, I usually end up with little weepers. You'll notice it in my recent vids. Let me know if it works for you. hi David. They are all good products you're using. Maybe try the Boots cool cologne cream if you can get some. It's easier to lather than the soap in the bowl. It takes a wee bit of time for your skin to get used to this way of shaving but stick with it. And I would definitely recommend trying out different brands of blades. They are all very different and they will all feel different depending on what type of stubble you have and what razor you put them in. But you'll know when you'd find a blade that works for you. Let me know how you're getting on and if you need to ask anything, I'll do my best to try and answer it for you. Cheers. Kevy. 👍

    Did my first DE shave today and it sort of went ok. I did cut myself three times and had issues mostly on the lip area and under the cheeks. I guess I got too cocky 🤣🤣 I shall press on and take my time on the next one. I used a Viking Chieftain with a Viking blade. Any tips on a beginner blade or any tips in general?

      Firstly, well done and welcome to the crazy world of wet shaving! The first few Shaves will be you learning new technique. But rach shave will get better and it wont take too long. Blades are wo different. I would recommend getting a sampler pack of blades and trying some different ones to get you to find out which work well. Astra Sp, Gillette Silver blue, gillette Nacet and Personna blades all seem to be favorable with lots of wet shavers so might be an idea to try some of those. Just take your time and try to adjust each time you shave, you'll get there, just enjoy it. Kevy 😀👍

    what did you use to shave with before the safety razor ??

      Gio I used a Wilkinson Sword cartridge razor with multi blades and a lubrication strip and some Gillette gel. What about you? What do you use to shave with Gio?

    very interested in starting DE.. old man was old school. But who has time to shave like this everyday? Or does it cut so closely you can skip a day?

    • @kevyshaves4109
      @kevyshaves4109  7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Piko Van Go for it Piko! You can have a quick shave sometimes. Once you start shaving this way, you'll enjoy it so much you might get out of bed 15 minutes earlier, just to have a shave! Of course, you don't have to shave every day, it depends on how quickly your beard grows back in or if you need to shave every day for work etc. But you definitely can skip a day or two between shaves. Cheers. Kevy 😀

      so if you had to choose between these scenarios.... A. Use a DE razor and usual shaving creams Or B: Purchase a nice brush and quality shaving soap and use store razors. Which, Kevy?

    • @kevyshaves4109
      @kevyshaves4109  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Piko Van Tough question! I think I'd prefer using a de razor. what would you choose? Kevy ☺

    • @Playsinvain
      @Playsinvain 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      don`t know... but I was kind of hoping you would have chosen the cream and brush... as the DE makes me nervous and requires me to get out of the comfort zone...

      Well, the reason I choose the DE is because after years of using cartridges, my skin was sore everytime I shaved, dragging 4 blades across my face. Thats the reason I went for the DE and a good blade. Cheers. Kevy :)

    Why you got blood is because you applied pressure !

      Kevy Shaves I just ordered my first DE, and I'm sure a lot of the pressure comes from habit with the cartridges. Is there any tips you have for me to avoid doing this? I've read several forums where they say to hold it like a pencil or with less fingers.

    • @kevyshaves4109
      @kevyshaves4109  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Tyler Ashley Hi Tyler. It takes a while to,adjust and get used to the no pressure thing. I find it helps holding the razor near the top between my thumb and first finger. That way your not gripping the razor and I find it's more difficult to apply pressure. You will find your own way of doing it. I've heard others say that imagine the razor is a paint brush and your using very light strokes on your face. I hope this helps. Let me know how it goes. Cheers. Kevy 😀

    It hurts watching you push the razor against your skin that much :D
