    Since inklings evolved from squids, it’s likely that their “teeth” are actually just their beaks. Inkling teeth basically just look like two large plates as well so a beak that has evolved to be shaped like teeth to support a human like diet would make sense. If they are more like teeth teeth and it’s just stylistic, then they also could have evolved from their radula, but I think the beak just makes the most sense from what we know.

      @nicvmel 3 ปีที่แล้ว +30

      If anyone is curious, a squid's beak is made of chitin
      The exoskeletons of insects & crustaceans, radulae (eating structure) of mollusks, and cell wall of fungi all contain chitin

    • @GandalfTheTsaagan

      @@nicvmel Another fun fact about cephalopod beaks: the thing that determines their density and solidity is -melanin- (correction: not melanin, but a chemical component ALSO found in melanin and other proteins and pigments), so the darker the beak the more stiff and hard (when you look at them you can see that the tip is super dark while the base is almost transparent given that it's covered in flesh and serves to anchor the muscles).
      The implications this has for the game are:
      A) Inkling beaks are super soft, meaning that they don't really use them and the radula is doing most of the work. This probably also means that they depend on soft food.
      B) Another substance has replaced the melanin (calcium?), so their beaks still function as expected but are white.
      C) The obvious one: artistic liberty. The inklings are first and foremost humanoid, and things that make them squid come second and are there mostly to enrich their design. So the devs and artists simply decided to design their teeth based on ceph beaks because it looks cool and makes sense lore wise. And a black denture just looks weird.
      With all that in mind you can envision them however you like.

    My theory:
    The little ghost thing that appears when you die is actually the inkling's body with all the ink removed which travels to the respawn point via magnetism, and what the respawn point does is it rehydrates them by refilling them with ink and returns them to their normal state. And the reason 8 dies if you lose the commander tartar battle is due to the fact that their ink-free body is too exposed to the elements. This makes more sense when you realise it's a clear and sunny day on every stage, and in the grizzco stages which are exposed to the elements the ghost has much less distance to cross.

      That would also make sense with the Salmon Run respawning being via life rings given the tidbit about magnetic fields being out of whack in salmon run stages, and resuscitations being done via inking your colleagues.

    Biology student here:
    1) RNA is produced every 1.2-2.5 seconds in eukaryotes (multicellular organisms), new RNA would probably be produced using an operon-system (RNA is produced when a promoter is present or not present telling the body "it's squid/kid time")
    2) Considering the amount of RNA the body would need to produce as well as the fact inklings could be cold-blooded (as squids are cold-blooded), inklings would need to eat a lot more than humans would to keep up with their metabolism

    as for the pools? perhaps they take the time to clean them with salt based chemicals while turf wars are going on. this would give them time to clean the pool, AND give the stage a hazard for dynamic gameplay.

    I like to think that if you drain an inkling of ink it would be a very limp almost wet tissue paper texture transparent membrane with some organs attached; the rest of their body is likely just high pressure ink. The same way we flex our arm is them increasing ink pressure.
    I'd also like to imagine that same logic coming to to play with respawning. They're still alive and have their gear and the like, but they're in an incredibly weak and almost inkless state. The "ghost" is that membrane getting dragged back and rehydrated with ink.

    • @wistfuloptimist1238

Considering the fact that their internal biology is so different from squids (considering they're practically made of ink???) I wouldn't count it out.

    This was super interesting! And about the reproduction i actually have a theory about that.
    I feel like they would reproduce similar to squids in real life where thousands of are laid by the female and are externally inseminated by the male (also this is by far the weirdest comment I've ever left on a video) and it's proven that fish like hering still lay thousands of eggs so it's still in the realm of possibility

      Not quite like human reproduction, but close enough and a better fit for a terrestrial lifestyle.
      The other option is for it to work exactly like humans.

    I think the explosion they make in the water has to do with osmosis, they are primarily made out of ink that is water with concentrated substances, so a lot of water enters in their cells when touching water making them explode.
    For people who don't know the osmosis is a process in which the concentration of substances in water is balanced with the flow of water from less concentrated area to more concentrated area, this explains the explosion because the cells would absorb too much water in this process.
    Also this could be an adaptation made to resist the contaminated waters with a lot of substances in them, by having high concentration fluids they avoid dehydration and so they could survive in poor water conditions in the past, this also makes them need to drink less water or being able to drink contaminated water easily.

    It's worth mentioning that there's a fairly new branch of science called evo-devo (evolution and development) that studies the correlations between an organism's ontogeny (the growth and changes from fetal development to adulthood) and its evolutionary history.
    For example, how in the earliest stages all vertebrate fetuses are very similar given their shared ancestry, how the genetic markers for antenna, mouth parts and legs are so similar in arthropods because in earlier members of the group they were all identical, why baby elephants are super hairy compared to adults (something reminiscent of both mammoths and earlier mammals), etc.
    So while it's important to not confuse the ontogeny diagram with the evolution one (specially because evolution isn't a linear process), one gives us clues for the other.
    For example, the fact that inklings don't get fingers and toes until much later in their development could indicate that primitive inklings didn't either until very recently, which would definitely impact their ability to manipulate objects and develop technology.

    • @wistfuloptimist1238
      @wistfuloptimist1238 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    I have a question: how does different colored ink damage Inklings and Octolings? I would assume that maybe only their own ink doesn’t hurt them, but that goes against what’s seen in turf war. So then it must be color related, maybe a chemical in the ink that differs depending on color? Also, how do ink color changes happen?

    • @nicvmel
      @nicvmel 3 ปีที่แล้ว +19

      Since it's explained that microbes produce the ink, it would be assumed those microbes would be in the ink too. Coming into contact with enemy ink could cause the person to be infected by foreign microbes (as detected by the body), and the damage effect could be an immune response (also the pressure of ink being shot from a gun would not feel good)

    • @sboinkthelegday3892
      @sboinkthelegday3892 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I have a pretty solid theory that an Inkling ink pool is a colony of Protists called Alveolates. They are other organisms next to plant and fungus, but different, just like mushrooms aren't plants. These are more like a plankton. And, Alveolates look like TINY SQUIDS.
      Maybe the true form of Inkling society is the Protist Kingdom, because one interesting thing about protists is that they include colorful, poisonus Red Algee reefs you might know about. Let's say Inkling colonies or "teams" can cahnge the color of their bloom just on the basis of being on the same team, and they change their opinions conveniently by just siding with the home team. They don't really think about issues or anything. That's why going through a different pool of "opinions" is like reading angry youtube comments, because it's actually crawling with the ghosts of inklings like the one you become when getting splatted, they're just the audience to the participating players booing at you. And the same rule could apply even if you don't include the microbial detail of this theory.
      Another thing about Protists though is that they have an intersting cell structure. Instead of a nucleus with a surrounding cell, like a brain and spine inside a human body, they have a bag filled with fluid, just like an individual Inkling. Maybe inklings don't really develpop organs but the fluid inside them jsut flows in the shape of them, and the SKIN is their brain. An invisible layer just underneath the visible skin, because it fills up from a microscopic ghost Inkling, and gets drained when splatted. And Inklings are a bit silly, so I guess every time they talk about something they just act like know-it-alls, that's why they THINK they are Squids and Octopods but don't seem to understand that Octolings are different species. They ARE all alveolates, they just act like they should look like Octopods if they grew up that way.
      A third Protist feature is that the reason they are like living sacs of water, is a developemnt in their histone structure that in animals has a lot to do with why we have sexual dimorphism. That could explain why in Splatoon 3 it seems you don't choose a gender but only the features. And it's an interesting parallel to Toads that are confirmed by interview to have no sex, despite Toadette existing. Toadette is just another Toad, they're equal in that way. I know this is all coincidental design but Inklings could easily fit as a more edgy version of Toads, more selfish and fun-loving but dont' get along as soon as there's an arbitrary change in color, in stark contrast to many-colored Toads. Well, they get along, but they're certainly competitive.
      Even if you don't accept any of this, there's also the tihng that Kooaps CAN'T be tortoises, because their spinal shell would PREVENT them from wearing detachable shells. So if Koopas can "be" tortoises by all accounts despite being obviously just reptiles, Inklings could "be" squids without it being technically true and they fucntion more like plankton.
      And that way we have a lot of clades checked for:
      Bacterial Kingdom: Kirby...?
      Protist Kingdom: Splatoon
      Mushroom Kingdom: Mario
      Plant Kingdom: Pikmin
      Animal Kingdom: Star Fox (based on Japanese lore on dogs and monkeys)

    Here's my theory on water, reproduction and the cursed topic of breasts..
    Water - since we know that the earth was heavily polluted when humans went extinct and that the ocean actually absorbs pollution in the real world. Then its very plausible that the ocean surrounding inkopolis is basically toxic. I've seen some dialog spoken by pearl about drinking water to stay hydrated. Plus showers are a thing in splatoons lore. My theory is, that the water inkling and other creatures drink is cleaned. Maybe by giant clams, since they are basically natures water filters.
    Reproduction - I honestly don't want to delve toooooooo much into this since I'm sure most people don't want to think about the cute inklings this way. But I wanna just put out that my theory is that ever since inklings evolved they also evolved a sense of morals I guess you could say, or better yet humanity. So instead of mates laying batches of eggs and just leaving them to defend for themselves, instead they evolved to laying 1 or maybe 3 eggs and both parents help raise them. Idk take it as you will and feel free to add onto that if you wish!
    Breasts - this was a topic of a splatoon video that I've seen before and it was pretty interesting. My theory on breasts might be almost the same with the reproduction theory. After evolving they weren't necessarily "predators" but in their version "humans". So morals came into play, thus making inklings and octolings having to approach feeding their young a different way. Maybe they got this idea based off of old paintings or stories of how humans cared for their young and thus followed suit.

    My theory about inklings intestines when they go in squid form maybe they can shrink just like the inklings? Think about it, if they can shrink like 10x smaller, maybe their intestines would too. Maybe their slightly ink too so they can shrink? And technically this isn’t 100% canon but they can kinda breathe in squid form. If you go into squid form out of ink, without moving, you can see them kinda breathing from those little flap looking things between the big tentacles

    I think they can touch some water, but can't be submerged. We see them walking in very shallow water, as well as eating food which has to have some sort of water or other liquid in it. Not to mention drinking soda. I also thinking they can respawn quicker depending on where the closest spawn point is. If there wasn't one near, or didn't know where you were, you could be trapped for years. I also thinking they only way they could truly die is by sickness and if they completely dry out with no ink anywhere near.

Instead, I propose that until such a time in which Inklings are found to be consistent with one existing genus of cephalopod, they are classified among a new genus, with a new name to match. For my suggestion as to the name of both the genus and the specie, I present Inkantus Decus. While I'm on the subject, I might as well name the Octolings too, so here's Inkantus Octurus.

That's like saying "Inklings must canonically not have lungs because they aren't modeled on their interior." You aren't meant to see it. Nintendo has better things to spend time, effort and game processing power on that details nobody can ever see.

    • @just_call_me_leo

      It's because water is either salty, which *dissolves* ink, contaminated, which gets bacteria inside the inkling from bad water getting inside, and chemicals that also come in from the pools. So an inkling could possibly take a shower with light water, or a bath with regular tap water and chemical friendly soap. But to fall into a chemical filled/salty pool in game, that seems pretty painful.
      To drink normal electrolyte water would probably be okay, or being rained on on a drizzly day. But like I said, jumping into a pool of water, or etc. would tear their skin and such

      Rain isn't like literal lava, so touching it won't just immediately break their skin. It has to do with what's in the water or how hard the water hits the inkling/octo. Light drizzle won't do much when it comes to raining, unless you are talking about a really big *DOWN pour* then that probably hurts some inklings. Other than that I think taking a tap water bath/shower or drinking normal water that doesn't have chlorine chemicals, like the pools in game, is contaminated, like many lakes and bodies of water in game, or isn't salty like Salt Spray Rig will not harm them. I think Marina is over exaggerating in her dialogue...

    Because Splatoon seems it could connect to both real world and Super Mario universe, I like to think it as our best bet to having any clue what's up with Mushroom kingdom.
    I have maybe not theory but the base conception that in Mario, everything is something else than it is said to be. APPEARING as sometihng IS being something, like Koopas are turtles because they APPEAR to be turtles, but they definitely ARE NOT turtles. If any kind of reptile could have detachable shells, it would not be turtles because they already have a shell inherent to their biology. Likewise, Goombas or "Kuribo" in japanese are named after chestnuts but called mushrooms, so which are they? Well, their cousins LOOK like persimmons and chestnuts, so I guess they ARE mushrooms; it's just a fungus that can sprout into LOOKING like different fruit. Even... the human-like bipedal mushroom that are CALLED Toads. A toad might have not much in common with humans, but certainly more than a mushroom does.
    So what would this mean for Splatoon? Maybe, that splat platoon looks like squids because they ARE NOT squids. But they can turn "into" ink, or rather... they are the ink. What kind of ink would exist without the squid, why, it's ink that only APPEARS to be colorful, goopy substance much like ink, or maybe paint. Algae. Very fine substance in the taxonomic KINGDOM called 'Chromista', one of six distinct kingdoms that form all life. The one right next to... Mushroom Kingdom of Fungi. Others are eukaryotic beings of Protozoa, and then Plantae, Animalia and Bacteria.
    The thing about kingdoms is that they are not supposed to evolve into each other, but are the true original animals of our world, although that is pretty much a debunked theory like the idea that dinosaurs didn't have feathers. But let's say in Nintendo fiction, that is still true. Chromista, algae, evolved into a stage where it could bloom into resembling an entire humanoid species once majority of sweet lakes were too polluted for humans to survive. BUT the rising saltwater sea levels make it so they too at at risk dissovling into it, however they can respawn at camp due to some kind of collective memory being stored in the ink itself, not the humanoid body. This mimicry of APPEARING human is what individuals learn to do when they grow up, because that knowledge of human legacy was understood by the algae and became the basis of its social development, like how we have laws and sense of morals despite not having any biological relation to stacks of paper and the words written on them with... ink.
    And that mechanic is also the missing link in Mario universe and how things happen there the way they do. It could even be set in the future, where maybe Chromista still exists as the power used to create Koopa shells and Yoshi eggs, while Fungi has taken over much of the land under the command of Princess Peach. It can bloom tiny powerups like Super Mushrooms or entire functional agents like Toads. Does this seem consistent with Bowser's Fury?

    I believe that those breasts are in fact ink sacks which explains why women are so favored. The bigger the ink sacks the more ink they can produce and the farther they can shoot it which is a clear combat advantage.
    Since ink is so pivotal to Inklings it is likely that they use a complex hydraulics system rather than cartridge which would get in the way when transforming into squid form and back. The squids sisters and captain cuttlefish are exceptions due to being cuttlefish. This should leave more room for larger ink sacks and the neccessary organs.

Then the female probably lays 3-4 egg sacs, injects the sperm into the egg sacs, and has to pull out the babies 22 months later, and most of the embryos would either miscarry or suffocate on their way out via amniotic sac.

  • @themaster1569
    @themaster1569 ปีที่แล้ว

    Since no one really wants to discuss the inkling reproductive process I will. I'll be taking a logical & utilitarian approach to my explanation as I believe it's rather simple with some possible slight differences that fall into the realm of conjecture rather than fact.
    Squid reproduction like us requires a male squid to provide a sperm cell to impregnate a female egg. A male squid has a special tentacle that's smaller than the rest that dispenses the cell to the female squid's ink sac that contains the eggs. Does this all sound familiar? It should as I believe all these functions are built-in into their humanoid bodies. The inklings being advanced life forms likely reproduce by means of intercourse in the usual genital regions. It's an effective method of propagating the species in their current forms in a waterless environment.
    Now the conjecture part. Do female inklings grow their children within the sacs in their bodies before birth? Or let's say for example they pop them out 2 weeks then they grow in whatever they are contained in until birth in say a year's time for example.
    Now also conjecture is whether females only give birth to singles, two or three. I'd say maximum is three at once, two at minimum and one at the very least obviously. It can't be 70,000 like the way it is now because the inkling being the dominant life form on the planet would have no trouble giving birth to all of them and this would quickly cause overpopulation problems so logically it must be the previous three options.
    As for female breasts they are either A, vestigial and if they truly are nippless lumps of muscle then they only serve to look good or B, the squid baby isn't capable of eating the same food as the adults do just like their ancestors did and now require a female to provide nourishment. So specifically females at least have nipples but we'll never know as Nintendo is never gonna let us take a peek under the hood to see. And now another unknown here is what is being produced? Milk? Ink? Some special substance specifically for baby squid's?
    Bottom line is it doesn't really seem logical to think they propagate any other way since they no longer can submerge themselves under water. So it leaves the typical method you and I are familiar with.
    Now why did I originally come here before going on about theoretical Inkling biology? I came here to figure out how to kill/war inklings/octolings and octarians in my strategic mental war games since octarians appear to be more technologically advanced than our technology and so i couldn't let that stand. So it's not like I came here to be weird about this topic but I hope it helped and you were able to stay serious the whole read without blushing to hard.
