this, and it felt kind of deserved bc you earned it. you didnt just BUY the access, you battled your way to the end and (for me at least) it took a long time and alot of effort.
SAME like my oc can be goofy and energetic with a slosher but closed off and cold with a charger it just adds something cool to my gameplay and many others!
I feel like most of the reason why I play as octoling is just because I thought they were rlly cool in Splatoon 1. Just wish they had more hairstyles considering inklings have double the amount octolings do lol
I mean none of the male hairstyles really tickled my fancy in 3, I was going to play as an Inkling but after seeing what was available I went back to Octolings because there was one style that I... didn't, not care for?
I chose an octoling for Splatoon 3 because it creates a 1:1 ratio of playable inklings and octolings across the games. Agent 3 is always an inkling, Agent 4 is always an inkling, and Agent 8 is always an octoling. So when given the option to make New Agent 3 an inkling or octoling, I naturally went with the octoling to keep it even.
The lore behind Octolings really drew me to them ever since the octo expansion days. The way they're a lot quieter and speak English like it's their second language always fascinated me. The subtle details in Splatoon 3 really cement my love for them, like when they jump during shop transitions instead of stumbling like an Inkling really show they're more experienced and focused on a day to day probably due to their history with making it to the surface. Unlike an Inkling who have grown to be more comfortable with their surroundings so they drop their guard more often. This is made more apparent when looking at their weapon animations in Sheldons shop. While an Inkling examines the look of the weapon, possibly examining how "fresh" it looks, an Octoling is seen testing the handling, weight, and scope of the weapon as it's something they prioritized when it was a matter of life and death in the underground.
To me, it looks more like the inklings were the one testing the weapons, examining the scope, the range and whatnot while the octolings, were having a little bit of fun with it, a total reversal of Splat2
Wanted to pop in just to say we have the same name and I read the statement entirely! And yeah it would make sense why octolings seem more graceful. It's because they're paying attention, unlike carefree inklings who lose turf wars from oversleeping.
As a Splatoon 1 player, Inklings have a soft spot in my heart, so I've always stuck with them! I also just prefer them in their swim form to octo swim form, though I think the feminine octolings have the absolute cutest of all the voices!
Yes, as a Splatoon 1 player, Inklings are just really nostalgic and endearing to me (especially since I was really young at the time). I also think that the more triangular? swim form of the Inklings is really sick whilst the round one of the Octolings isn’t as flattering…
i really like octolings, but none of the octo hair looks like the type of hair i want. i have long hair in real life but there aren't really any long octo hairstyles
besides generally preferring how much more inhuman they look, I also prefer the squid form over the octopus form. I find it cuter, and I love how when you super jump as an inkling, you look kind of like an arrow with your pointy head-
I love the octo swim form, with the roundness and the tentacle mustache, but the clarity of direction from the Squid shape is just so helpful for newer players
Lore was actually a big reason why I play Octolings! I've been playing since Splat 1 and I was always fascinated by them, I picked up Octo in 2 and the idea of having to really fight to be accepted in a literal and metaphorical sense really sticks with me as a person with disability. Overall, being *my* Agent 8 is the most I could have ever asked for.
I completely agree with this as a minority (Latino) with a chronic genetic blood disorder (SickleCell Anemia) that makes me physically frail and in pain all the time... It's a fight everyday and it's awesome to have that be represented in my favorite game 🥰 I hope you are doing well! You are more then your disability and you are loved! 🤍❤️🩹
Agreed, octoling lore immediately gives your character conflict or challenge. Considering we make OCs with trauma, being an Octoling kinda scratches that same itch. How did you leave octarian society? How was it adapting to inkling society, naturally or was it some huge change? Or best of all… we all fell in love with our little agent 8. Their fight was our fight! I hope you continue to enjoy the game and that life treats you well!
this exactly. i struggle with adhd and being "normal" with everyone else and i love how myself and others with disabilities can resemble ourselves in them
I’m an octopus player and always have been since dlc dropped. It’s for lore reasons, as a person of color a large part of octoling lore deeply resonated with my experiences growing up in an underprivileged area, even as I was watching the announcement trailer for the dlc, I was homeless. I was always daydreaming, drawing, or looking to the sky beyond where I was, and agent 8 was the same
You're just Woke, everybody lives in difficulty, the only difference between us and you, is that you sorely focus on skin color and hatred towards white people, using Government to be immune to consequences for your words and actions.
As an actual researcher, I just wanted to say you did a wonderful job on this! It makes me very happy to see someone use more accurate research methods to describe patterns in video games! A few things - I would have preferred a longer explanation on the possibility of bias in your samples based on game modes and rank. You did discuss this a bit, and while I agree the effects (if any) would likely be small, I think explaining this for a lay audience in detail is important. Additionally, while I do not know much about Splatoon's match making methods, I would have liked to see you go in a bit more detail on this. I personally do not think it is completely random, and thus, it would need to be accounted for. Or, at least mentioned in a bit more detail. Finally, as a qualitative researcher, I was happy that you did a bit of content analysis at the end with the youtube comments! This is a good inclusion. However, I would have liked to hear a bit more on your specific methods of analyzing these comments, as qual research does have specific methods for content analysis (despite what some people think). But overall, this was a lovely video, and you made my day! :) I hope you have a good day yourself!
Wow, thanks so much for the kind words and advice! I only took one semester on this topic so I'm definitely not attuned to its finer points; I can see how your suggestions would improve the information being presented & viewers' understanding of it. Have yourself a lovely day as well!
@@bluestacks6679 it was in fact a few things. not necessarily a small amount of words depending on what you consider a small amount of words, but it was only a few things, possibly even just two depending on how you look at it.
I’m so glad to actually hear people switching isn’t out of the ordinary! At first i mainly played fem inklings, but after a repeat play through of octo expansion I decided to go for the male option on a whim and ended up falling in love with the little goober. But I didn’t want to just give up my old history with my first character, so I decided for the best of both worlds and made them roommates! I switch between both pretty regularly and have gear/outfits that I use for each to spice things up. glad to know I’m not the only one :))
Yea I feel like I’m playing as a different character whenever I switch my character up. I think my main would be an inkling but I love them all equally
I've been an Inkling for the longest time simply because I still remember so badly how I wanted to play as the main boy from Splatoon 1. He shared my characteristics; pale skin and blue eyes. His gear was socially strange from where I was from; the idea of high tops and a layered longsleeve was practically unheard of. Yet it looked so cool. Over time I would modify my look and gear to be more in tune with myself and freedom rather than that initial desire, but to this day I remain feature wise and species wise the same since the first hour as I've always felt a true sense of comfort and "me" in that. When I play a game like splatoon I just want to be a projection of myself, i dont want to be an oc or otherwise. And in the weirdest way of things, choosing inkling as my species along with the other traits is how I embrace that feeling. I feel lucky for that. As for the survey, I whole heartedly expected (and kind of knew) Octolings to be the majority as I am extremely often the only one or one of few Inklings in all modes and teams. This was the case since octo expansion; I feel there is a sense of desire to be more like the Octolings in the splatoon community. That something about them is more special to them even if everyone else is playing as them. Although to me, all of them are special. All of them matter. All of them are cute and deserve love. But, ironically, I feel I see what makes people desire to stand out as an Octoling due to origin appears to me to be something that we all actually have in common. That we are not so different in our struggles, or how we are all minor reflections of our homes. Which leads me to believe that many souls may just identify with the written Octoling upbringing more, and it is just literal in that fact. But, these are all our characters, and it is in our hearts how they were raised. I remember being so, so excited for octo expansion even though I knew I would never switch over. The idea of people being allowed to choose a new species, with new icons and voices and more just made me so excited. I can't explain why but that freedom of co-existence just tickled my fancy so much. I thought it was the coolest thing ever. It reminded me of when you could play as Elites and Spartans in halo multiplayer. I had no plans to switch over. But introduction of Octolings brought me so much joy. This survey was really freaking cool. Thank you for taking the time to answer a very interesting question I believe we all have had at the back of our minds. The graphics were super cute, the video was perfectly paced and engaging, and funny, and the neutral viewpoint (focused solely on results) with minor analysis actually made me cry a little because in these trying times we need a little more positivity, inclusivity, security and ingenuity.
Halo player and MASSIVE Elite fan here, I'd been making those parallels between getting to play as the Arbiter/Agent 8 in campaigns and Elites/Octolings in multiplayer from the get-go. Nice to see someone else making that comparison (though Elite players are still a tragically small minority, especially since most of the newer titles don't have them as playable anymore, so I'm pleased Octolings got a happier situation here.).
i've always wanted to see artists do more video essays type videos, so its really cool to see how cute all of the drawings and graphics for this video was!
I think the reason I'm more attracted to playing Octoling over inklings is that I have a friendly, semi-friendly personality. I see inklings as energetic and more extroverted while octolings as more introverted and shy to others. Style-wised, their hair design I really enjoyed.
@@BlazeK9 In real life, they're both predators. It's just that octopuses are stealth/ambush predators that live in dens alone, while squids swim free in the open ocean in schools using speed and agility to hunt.
As someone who just graduated as a sociology major, it’s honestly really cool seeing ethnography and statistical field research being used for something that I love. Great job! All the effort and extra lengths you went through to ensure reliable data didn’t go unnoticed.
I think the fact that people generally find octolings are cuter than inklings, is due to their designs being "rounder" that those of inklings. With their pointy ears and straight tentacles, inklings have a lot of triangles in their designs and are therefore perceived as more dynamic, sharper, more energetic (maybe explaining their chaotic temper ?). In opposition, octoling have rounder ears, wavier tentacles, and therefore have more curves, (they are mainly composed of circles) thus why they have this "friend shaped" vibe going on, that probably makes them more compelling to people. Bonus : We even find this pattern in real life : the suckers of octopuses are smooth, while squids' suckers got little teeth or hooks in them, to help them grip better. Maybe that's the real reason as to why inklings won the war ?
Also! This shape language applies to their fingers and eye shape! Inklings' finger tips are shaped like boxes, while Octolings have rounder tips (at least in the official art). The former also has more narrowed eyes than the latter, doubled down by the face mask making their eyes seem smaller. Octoling eyes are bigger and more rounded than an Inkling's by default (for player characters), and a lack of black over their nose also adds to the illusion of more of an eye size difference. (Well, it isn't an illusion per se, but it does reinforce the idea to the viewer.) There's also the fact that for Octolings, the mass of their tentacles is mainly towards their scalp and gets thinner as it moves down, emulating how human hair works. An Inkling's tentacle mass is usually at the end of their hair, and that's the opposite of how human hair works, so they feel less human adjacent.
@@crafted_myth2392 Octoling hair is also animated more gracefully almost as if they were moving on their own, probably referencing the fact that octopus have brain cells in all their tentacles so they sorta have a 'mind of their own'
I don't think either of them are more rounder than the other. Octolings have rounder ears, but pointer tentacle ends. Inklings have pointer ears, but rounder tentacles etc...
This video reminded me alot of the days as a kid where I would play as an Elite in halo 3 multiplayer, they also had alot less customization like octolings, but being able to play as your former enemies just felt cool as hell. I personally play an inkling in 3 because I like the hair styles
Oh man, where do I begin? The editing, the drawings, the humor were all OUTSTANDING! I was hooked even for the math part, and I don't even like math at all. As for the question of whether I play as an Inkling or Octoling, I'm more on the Inkling side as I grew up playing Splatoon 1, but I do switch to Octolings at times. I do view them as like ocs and I've even developed lore and stuff for them and so has my brother, so there we go. I think my brother might be more neutral to both species
aaa thanks so much, I'm so glad to hear it! It's always interesting to hear from folks who've been around since the 1st game; I joined Splatoon 1 at like the very last minute, maybe 2 months before Splatoon 2's release so I wonder if that affects my preference at all :o
@ScribbleSpecters I joined splatoon 2 at the last minute haha, and that's when I began randomly adding lore to my ocs And you're welcome! I love your animations and videos so much! Keep yp the good work :D
Octoling seemed cuter to me because they were shy and I love how their swim form is so round and huggable. I think inklings are cute too, just not as cute.
Yeah, Inklings are bolder and give more an "extroverted" vibe. Octolings are more subtle, and the lore holds them in a place that makes them become more relatable in general.
Octolings for some reason seem more cute in splatoon 2 than splatoon three idk if it's bc they arent so shy anymore or it's just bc the game has changed their apperence.
@@spoon4169 i feel like the eyebrows change it (eyebrows like this "^" make for more shy personality and eyebrows like this "v" probs make them seem more extroverted and aggressive) and the overall clothing style + vibe of the game
I chose Octoling because of Octo Expansion. I adore Agent 8, and I love their story. Their voice is super adorable (especially the veemos). So when Splatoon 3 came out, I stuck with an Octoling.
I play as an Octoling because I prefer the IRL octopus to the squid, and because the single-tentacle hairstyle (bottom row 2nd column at 11:35) is so awkward that I can't help but love it.
I was waiting for someone to say this!! Octopuses are just more popular “favorite creatures” irl than squids in my experience. People like their intelligence and other abilities!
Absolutely prefer inklings specifically for how non-human they look, the mask around their eyes is definitely what struck me the most and the pointy ears really tap into my love for elves and other supernatural creatures! And tbfh as of now it feels more original to play an inkling (no shade to octo players but the data is there now pfft)
I kinda ended up seeing my octoling and inkling characters as two separate characters while playing Splatoon 2, which naturally lead me to defaulting to octoling in splat 3. I still play my inkling character from time to time, but after spending so much time helping the octoling fight her way to the surface, I'm far too attached to not use her 99% of the time.
The thing is I haven't played Octo Expansion and use Octolings. Maybe it's because I made an animation based off the dlc and made me attached to them more lol
Two things. One, this kind of mathematical application of things I enjoy is just wonderful to me. Two, it’s oh so very rare to find channels that are this entertaining. Keep up the good work.
i love playing as both inkling and octoling, inklings are just so iconic and i think they have a better overall design and are more recognizable. octolings are cuter and have cuter voices. i also liked how you gave a nod to players that regularly swap between both species, like if they have ocs, because i have two main ocs which are inkling and octoligns lmao
This is actually a REALLY good example of how to conduct scientific research, sample sizes, margins of error, ect, and explain it. They could use this as an example in schools to teach probability. (Also, when I started playing Splatoon I started with 3 and knew very little lore at the time. Despite this, I wound up choosing an octoling just because I like them, not realizing that my personality fits far more with them than with Inklings.)
Y'know, I hadn't even considered switching between the two before, but that sounds like a real cool way to have fun with OCs! Originally my "Splatsona" was an Octoling because I'd just watched Octo Expansion and loved it, but later I decided to make them a Nautilus instead, like Gnarly Eddy. Maybe next time I swap weapons or try a new look, I'll come up with a cool Inkling OC to match! I can't deny the Inkling hairstyles are really fun, and I like their voices too.
@@enderwolf1496 Yep, just go into the Options tab, to Other, and then hit Player Settings. It'll let you go through character customization again whenever you want!
@@enderwolf1496 It was even easier in 2 where they'd save your inkling and octoling characters separately and you could switch between them easily (probably so you could access story mode (squid exclusive) and octo expansion (octo exclusive) at will). It's definitely more tedious in 3 where you need to go into options and go through the interactive cutscene if you want to change species (probably because the player character in 3 is supposed to be one character instead of 2's inkling & octoling duo). And if you didn't know yet, changing pants, hair, and eyebrows within the same species can be done from the equip screen in the "other" tab. Why they don't let you edit species, gender, and eye color from there is a mystery to me - hopefully they'll add it in an update some day for the people who like to swap between. Until then I believe you can quick swap species with amiibo.
I used octolings because I was proud of finishing the octo expansion campaign thing, and then felt attached to the octoling I was using, which is why I still use them
I'm gonna be completely honest here, but I was NOT expecting actual data. I clicked on this video expecting like, idk, an animation skit like you usually do. The fact that you not only did the actual work to find a real answer, but also animated most of it while ALSO telling a story? HUGE respect to you! This video was so incredible on so many levels, I'm extremely impressed and, oddly enough, VERY proud. I've followed your content for a while now, so I guess watching you and your videos grow in terms of skill is what's giving me that sense of proudness. Idk how to explain it but regardless, you are awesome! Keep up the amazing work! ✌️😁👍 The art style in ScribbleSpecters' videos: "We're awesome"-🐙🤝🦑-"Agreed"
Wow, thanks for sticking around so long! This was def more of a "bucket list" type of vid for me, so if I ever make something like this again, it probably won't be for quite some time tbh ^^; But I'm happy to hear that my vids seem to have a sense of improvement-over-time to them, tysm!
@ScribbleSpecters No problem! I think the first video of yours that I saw was the Steven Universe one with Peridot calling Jasper a clod? (God it's been so long I could be very wrong) But yeah that's when I got into your videos! Your art style is amazing I'm honestly so jealous... But all jokes aside, you are definitely one of my favorite animators to watch! 😁
13:00 I actually am super glad that you included this segment. I have 4 human oc’s and they know each other and coexist. I mainly used Inkling boy bc it had my fave hair style. When Splat3 came out, I started to switch with the seasons. Octoling boy for Drizzle and girl for Chill and then Inkling girl for Fresh and boy for Sizzle. In my head, they’re a team of four with their own favourite fashion, brands, play styles, and everything. I even decorated my locker to include all of their main weapons 🦑💙🐙
I have 5 OC's personally! 2 of them are Octolings and 3 of them are Inklings (Well 2 are 100% Inklings and 1 of is like an inktoling fusion but since the game doesn't have that he's an inkling as well). And if someone is into source filmmaker posters and animation making like I am then I know for sure they have an army of their own oc's to play from both species
And just like in your case all of them coexist with each other and are close friends. I think the very cool thing about splatoon is how much you can add up to it yourself if you want to. And in splat 2 and 3 they can even (sorta) even be together and interract with each other within the game through photo mode
Since a bit after the Octo Expansion and everyone shipping Agent 3 with Agent 8, i felt bad for Agent 4 being alone :’) and decided to keep them with me…And S3 gave them a haircut that even fits me ! I still switch from time to time to Octoling though
I am usually an Octoling, but I absolutely ADORE Inklings! I switch sometimes, but I love the lore that Octolings have, and their hairstyles are more accurate to the hair I have irl. It’s nice to see the stats put up about the ratio from Inklings to Octolings, it’s been on my mind every since I got the game. I also love your art!
OMG, I've always wanted this type of video. I'm a longtime Splatoon veteran and a huge stats nerd so this vid was a delight. Plus, the editing, art and humour were all top notch. Even the more statistical and mathsy stuff were presented and explained really well. Excited for more from the channel.
I absolutely love data analysing, graphs, sampling and seeing you do something like this for my all time favourite series was a treat to watch. I really hope you enjoyed making this video 👍
Every season since the Inkopolis dlc I switch between my Agent 4 inkling I played as in Splatoon 2 and my octoling new Agent 3 from return of the mammalians! I think it’s cute to have them as separate characters doing their own things like they do in lore. If side order lets us play in the Splatoon 2 lobby I’ll probably add Agent 8 (or whoever the protagonist is) into my rotation too.
i honestly was surprised of how many inklings there were, i assumed that the number of people using octolings would have been even larger than the presented results, im happy to see that both are generally being represented close to the same amount, i played through all the games and i have stuck to the default inkling girl style every time, the style really gives me nostalgia, and i like to think that im using the same being through every game, like watching a character in a movie series progress through their story in each movie, dont get me wrong, i enjoyed playing the octo expansion and loved playing as an octoling, i have just grown really attached to the inkling, genuinely enjoyed this video, keep up the amazing work!
Thanks so much, & that's so cool that you've essentially been playing the same character from the start! Other Inkling players have commented expressing a similar sense of attachment, so I totally get it ^^
The main reason I play as an octoling is actually the eye pattern. The cat eye appearance of the octoling's eyes help give it a slightly more feminine look compared to the inkling's mask, and helps me look more on the feminine side regardless of what gear I have on. Also I prefer the more soft-spoken sound of the octoling's voice compared to the very high energy sound of the inkling's
omg was looking for this comment! I exclusively picked the octoling because I so adore the eyeliner and little bottom lash spike around the eyes xD now if we had more hair options that would just be the dream!
Yes, this comment makes up about 50% of my reasoning. The other 50% is because octolings weren't playable until as such and I wanted to get my fill of it. I do occasionally bounce between the two but octolings have become my default.
11:22 This, this part right here is one of the sole reasons i stuck with inklings in splatoon 3. Not having octo expansion in 2 made me feel like i was missing out, both in AND outside the side-story, but at the same time it built some strange sense of pride in me that made me happy with not swapping over when given the option. Even if octolings have much deeper lore and background than inklings, and i even find them cooler in a lot of ways. Also, remember when they quite literally *put both species at WAR with eachother in that splatfest? For FUN even?*
I’m just a dumb kid and I didn’t even realize when I was playing Splatoon two but there are people where an OCTO expansion crap I don’t know what octo expansion was. I didn’t know anything about Splatoon lore, but I like playing as an OCTO
I like the Inkling voice and feel comfortable being one. I've played Splatoon since the first game, and even though I like how octolings look I've never wanted to switch.
I love that you did all the math for this. I love math and I just took college Statistics last semester so it was really cool to see the same formula pop up just a few months after I learned it :)
After finishing Octo Expansion the same month it came out, I played as an Octoling for the remainder of the game’s life span, so I spent more time as an octo than a squid. Then in Splatoon 3 I decided to play as an Inkling again . Was interesting that inklings are now the minority! I barely notice how many people I’m playing with are inkling or octoling, but honestly I think that just goes to show how well octolings have fit into the setting’s society!
Goodness I absolutely loved this video! You did such a good job making it!! As for my choice whether I play as an Inkling or Octoling, a good majority of my reasoning actually comes from the irl species of Squids and Octopi. I’ve always thought that octopi are much cuter, and that’s why I play as an Octoling, cuz they cute! I also prefer the voice lines of the Octolings opposed to Inklings. As someone who is a Splatoon 1 Veteran, I’ve always had an interest in Octolings, so it’s pretty dang neat being able to play as them!
Wow thanks so much for the compliment & sharing your thoughts! It's cool you were interested in Octolings from the very start; I personally didn't realize I wanted to play as one until the DLC came out ^^
Squid always seems more like a food item to me. I don’t eat octupus but if I’m in the mood I might pick up some dried squid. I’m not gonna play as a snack. Also remember the octo vs squid splatfest? It was a bit odd if you ask me but that’s when I started liking the octos.
I’m also one of those people who love octolings because of the lore behind them, tho the reason I play as one so much is simply because I see myself in them. I tend to play as them because I find it more comforting, not to disrespect inklings or anything. I mean I look more like an octoling, I sound more like an octoling, hell I probably act more like one depending on the day. XD So yeah, it’s just a matter of comfort for me, but sometimes if I’m in the mood I’ll play as an inkling for funsies.
I just thought the hair was nice. I used the original 2 styles even in the 3rd game since I’m hesitant to make changes. The splatoon 2 nostalgia factor is too much so it’ll probably be the same if I come back to splatoon 3. Already been 4 years of my life worth splatoon 2. Long time.
I just love being Inkling! It’s cute, lore accurate, I feel like I’m still the same person as I started playing the game and I really love my OC! I remember switching from inkling to octoling, but now I can say I’m 100% inkling fan ❤
Lore is a HUGE reason why I play as an octoling! My character is an OC of sorts, slightly based on my personality. Being an ex-soldier working for the Octarians is a big part of why she is the way she is.
I actually do find myself picking octos for a number of the reasons you mentioned: they are the underdog, I think their outward facing suckers and eye liner to be more fun and convenient to draw, the curly hair octo styles fit my irl hair most, and lore wise I like the octos. I rarely if every switch my character to an inkling, because I think the options for customization, though wider, fit me less so. Oh also, thanks for teaching me more in this video about statics than an entire year in high school ever did.
for me, the reason i played as an Octoling in Splatoon 2 was that it was a bit of a flex. Since Octo Expansion was really challenging, being an Octoling was like saying, "Check it out! i managed to beat Octo Expansion!" And this was even more so when i cleared all 80 tests, beat Inner Agent 3, and got the Golden Toothpick. I wore that toothpick on my Octoling for months! And since i played Octoling so much, it really grew on me and became my favorite choice.
I normally switch between the species frequently due to OC tag-ins (which got a nice feature at the end), although I lean on Octoling slightly since I got attached to them over the course of Octo Expansion, but the amount of effort you put into this video was insane! Thank you for making this!
this was super fascinating!! as a huge splatoon fan and psych student who took a statistics class not too long ago, i found it awesome to see two of these topics meshed together; it’s both educational and fun! i could sense a lot of work was put into this & you did a really great job!!
I did not know that most people choose octolings! I am an octoling player and my friends and all the servers i play on are inklings. So it makes me really happy to know how many octolings are out there and really enjoy them!
this videos quality blew my mind you REALLY deserve more attention! top tier youtuber down to the editing, hand drawn animations and math is always a W to see. i felt obligated to comment just to boost this among the algorithm
as an octoling since the octo expansion came out, i loved seeing how more and more octoling started to show up in the plaza, almost like after the events of the dlc they finally found the courage of showing themselves without hiding their appearance i know that that's just a thought of mine, but i always felt like it was somehow lore accurate
I always liked the octolings and always wanted to be them especially after octo expansion but one thing I always liked was the eyes for the octolings and ears. It just made me want to play them since it gives of more of a timid vibe which I like.
I ended up with octoling because I can do both voices. Somehow, as a naturally deeper voiced guy I found it REALLY weird that I can Veemo AND Oomi. Apparently my vocal chords are stronk.
Before I give my irrelevant POV of the situation, I just want to say that your editing, drawings, and occasional humor made this a very enjoyable video to watch. Genuinely laughed out loud when that Clam Blitz Inkling busted through the wall. Overall the video was so clean and well put together that I was surprised to see that you weren't at least in the 100k range for subscribers! You make some great stuff man! I had an "I FREAKIN' KNEW IT" moment as soon as all those results came in. I'm a long-time player, been playing since Splatoon 1 and rarely ever even used the Octoling despite owning the expansion in Splatoon 2. Hell, haven't used it once in 3 so far either. The reason? Very similar to what you explained in the video, a form of pretty much patriotic pride and comfort gained by being an Inkling all these years. I always had a feeling that there were more Octolings than Inklings in Splatoon 3 but, even though the results aren't 100% accurate, you gave me the nice solid confirmation I've been looking for. It's pretty weird and actually sorta interesting seeing the franchise's face get outnumbered by the other. Makes you wonder what exactly started that shift and how long it took to get to that current majority.
Haha, I resonate with what you said a lot! Actually, everything you said; not just about which character to choose, but also praising this video creator on the methodology, attention to detail and presentation. I love Splatoon 1. I don't like Splatoon 1; I _love_ Splatoon 1 and feel compelled to fly its flag whenever I can. My Splatoon 3 character is an Inkling, but also specifically with an appearance that could be made in Splatoon 1's options (hairstyle, eye color, skin complexion), other than her skirt; I just fancy that skirt. I first played Splatoon 3 in the Zelda Splatfest; my first game on the Nintendo Switch, so I had the chance to snag the DLC by then and equipped the Squid Sisters Banner. When I got the Reppin' Inkopolis Emote, I set my victory animation to that and when I got the elements to make the "Calamari Inkantation" Title, I set my Title to that. I feel compelled to keep things this way, despite actually thinking Octolings have cuter faces (particularly their eyes and ears) and prettier hairstyles and wanting to use other Emotes, such as MVPleased and Victory Twist. I'm thinking I'll only try out others once I've collecting my most desired Title and Emote. My Splatoon 3 Locker is also kind of a personal tribute to Splatoon 1, with almost all of the pieces of Gear there due to them being some of my best Gear in Splatoon 1. I do have one pair of boots from Splatoon 3, though due to them being too pretty to exclude and working hard to get ny desired Main Ability on it. My Locker has about thirteen of my around seventeen weapons that I main'ed in Splatoon 1. I am actually going the route of an original character, though. My Splatoon 3 character is from the Splatlands, but has heard of the original Agent 3 and idolizes her and her legend of having taken down an army by herself. As such, my Splantlandian is a bit of a fan of the Squidbeak Splatoon and fills her locker with photographs, stickers and other memorabilia of them/the Squid Sisters. Her looking similar to the original Agent 3 also factors into the characterization. I've been in plenty of Splatoon 3 matches in which I'm only one of two Inklings among an Octoling queue. I remember one funny instance of feeling indignant when the Octoling to my Inkling's left and the Octoling to that Octoling's left fist bumped, with my three-gold Medal-earning self standing right next to them on the same stance elevation. I joking muttered to myself, "It's 'cause I'm an Inkling, isn't it? Racist..." (I'm pretty confident that in reality, gold Medals aren't equal in one tier and mine must not have been appraised as highly as theirs. I'm confident that there have been times when I'd have earned more than three gold Medals in one match, but of course, it only showed three, leaving out at least one that I should have gotten, based on looking at my end-of-match stats.) There's someone else in this Comments section that also wondered if Splatoon 1 veterans might lean more towards Inklings due to the history and hypothesized that higher Ranks could have more Inklings. However, both that person and myself, who also thought of this independently, dismissed that as unlikely. I know it's only anecdotal evidence and a very small sample size, but the few competitive Splatoon players I'm familiar with mostly choose Octolings at least as often, if not more than Inklings.
I have returned to report that my first and, so far, only "100x Battle" win was with a team of randos who were all Inklings. We got the title "Squid Society". Ironically, we were fighting for Team Shiver (not just on the Splatfest team that is being represented by Shiver, but specifically that first year anniversary of Splatoon 3 Splatfest).
@@Wei_Radula_Regiment Lmao thanks for the update man. I legit cannot remember my last match with a team of only Inklings but I swear, the more Inklings, the higher the chance of winning is. Just as ironically though, my only 100x battle win was with a team entirely comprised of Octolings besides me. It is what it is...
Enjoyed the fact that the math was properly represented and the fact that the sample bias was acknowledged. It's making me wonder if there's a chance that Inklings might be hiding in higher ranks because they're more likely to be veterans from the first game that decided to stick with their first character. Most probably not. Personally Inkling and it got cemented by the Octo Expansion, because of how cool Agent 3 was, and it was amusing to basically have a cameo appearance of yourself if you've played Splatoon 1.
i’m one of the past inklings that switched over just cause i wanted to check it out, but i love octos and inklings equally it’s so cute that people will switch back and forth between octo/inkling like little ocs :) absolutely going to start doing this also i’m so happy to now have this information, even if it’s entirely useless to most situations, it makes my heart happy :3
I personally used to pick octoling from when Octo Expansion dropped very late Splat 2, where I switched between the two regularly and then a bit after early Splat 3 I switched to inkling because it makes me feel more like “I’m myself even though I’m from the species people would think to be the default.”
I've been playing Splatoon since the first game and I've always been fascinated with octolings. I remember watching videos of people that hacked the enemy octolings into 1. One of the reasons I got OE was because I wanted to play as an octo. They're cuter and much more interesting to me. I hope one day they'll add the enemy octoling hair as an option.
I remember taking a statistics course back at the beginning of college. Being able to understand the terminology in the mathematical portion of the video made my little nerd in me really happy ❤️ I’m so glad the TH-cam algorithm threw this video at me, keep up the amazing work!
I got super attached to the Octolings from the Octo Expansion, but wasn't much surprised by the majority choice, if anything I thought it'd be a little bit more. I have my own characters in a story I'm making, that I make versions of in Splatoon. Guess you could call it a self insert of some kind? I dunno, in the end I just like how I look in any game. Also if you flatten the hair of the big curly one for Octo's you end up with a Josuke-esc Pompadour. I find it funny & kinda like it.
as a splat 1 veteran, i REALLY wanted to play as octolings. they had so much more sass and personality, and i liked the hairstyles for them much more than the inklings. that and i loved the lore behind the octolings and how we saved them with the help of callie and marie at the end of splatoon one!! their voices are all so cute and i miss the losing/win emotes from splatoon 2 for octolings so much :'))
Im a swapper. 🥰 I like the aesthetic of the octolings as a whole, might have something to do with octopi being one of my favorite sea creatures, along side jelly’s, but I also enjoy the more hair options in the inklings and their pointy ears, so I hop back and forth. I also generally change my name and aesthetic for splatfests to match the theme! 🥰🖤 Sometimes one has a hairstyle that matches what I want better and the other doesn’t. It’s very fun. 🥰
I play as an an octoling because I’m one of those people who likes to make an avatar who looks like myself, and the feminine default hairstyle is the one which fits my actual hairstyle the best
Me and a friend actually did our final statistics project on Splatoon! Instead of Inklings and Octolings, we did Average Points per Game Mode. It took a load of work, but we did it!
I started out as an Inkling, but switched to Octoling later. I really love Inkling's ears and mask, but I prefer Octoling's hairstyles and also like their little eyeliner stuff. In the end the deciding factor was finding the Octoling's slightly different animations when in shops or when idle endearing them to me, and yeah, it's cool that 'they made it', they got to the surface.
For me personally, I got really attached to my octoling after octo expansion's inner 3 fight. I was young, dripless, and bad at the game when I played splatoon 1. I modeled my octo expansion 3 after what I looked like in splatoon one, and beating that splatoon 1 version of myself was like moving on: and I could finally be good at the game! So now in splatoon 3 I am an octoling playing dynamo roller quite well.
Oh I love that you had like a character arc playing through all the games! I can kind of relate; I played a ton of Splatoon 2, but I feel like Splatoon 3's the first time I've actually, like, turned my brain on in regards to gameplay/skill lol
As of right now, I'm a bit conflicted, I really want an octoling! But the Bed head hairstyle truly is a breaking point for me, the messy spiky way that it is stylized and the fried up shaggy ends just gives so much more personality and sense of freshness to the classic 'just tentacle' hairstyles, if octos got more hair options, I would most likely to the change! x)
I mainly play more as an Octoling for their lore, it's just super interesting, honestly the inkling and octoling war is one of the best allegories for discrimination I've seen in media cuz they're technically different but can do exactly the same thing as the other can! Not even just an allegory for racism, this works for sexuality and gender more, and as someone who's part of too many minorities to count I can really relate to that! I also just prefer their designs hehe :3. Awesome video, you did a very great job here!!
Oh thats pretty cool!! This seemed really interesting entirely. There was definitely some unexpected things like "switching-between" regularly. Love the video!
A little lore based head cannon I came up with for why there are more octolings now is that after og Agent 3’s fight with Dj Octavio, where a lot of octolings like Marina left for the surface, a lot of them took a route that let them end up in splatsville. The town was of Octoling origin! So many Inklings from Inkopolis moves there in the past years that’s it’s kind of evened out, but still has octoling favor. It’s not uncommon to hear/see things in inkling or octoling, and a good number of residents are bilingual, (at least enough for everyday use and conversations). It’s fun to picture a big mix of the two cultures, rather than just little pops of octoling culture in the mostly Inkling cities.
Lore is why I switch between Inklings and Octolings! It depends on if I feel like I'm playing 8, 3, 4, or neo 3! I always switch to my headcanon Neo 3 design for the story campaign.
I hope the algorithm picks up this very informative, detailed, and educational video! I AM the small percent that enjoys both Inklings and Octolings, and that's both in lore and viewing them as Mario and Luigi. While I generally play as Inklings I will switch to Octos and appreciate how much the impact both species give.
I loved playing as an octoling in splatoon 2 because of the winning animations being different from inklings
this, and it felt kind of deserved bc you earned it. you didnt just BUY the access, you battled your way to the end and (for me at least) it took a long time and alot of effort.
@@itsthejavavoidFor real! I still go back to octo expansion quite a lot. I hope side order will be as good

I remember doing that way, WAY back in 2016/17, in Splatoon 1. The fact people are still doing that today is a wonderful thing to know.
FR FR
I feel like most of the reason why I play as octoling is just because I thought they were rlly cool in Splatoon 1. Just wish they had more hairstyles considering inklings have double the amount octolings do lol
ikr here's hoping future updates will add more octoling hairstyles 🤞
I just hope there’s long hairstyles for Octolings like really long for example the og inkling girl hairstyle long
@@Slushii24i think it's absolutely criminal that hairstyle still isn't an option
unrelated but omg silver pfp spotted ‼
I mean none of the male hairstyles really tickled my fancy in 3, I was going to play as an Inkling but after seeing what was available I went back to Octolings because there was one style that I... didn't, not care for?
I chose an octoling for Splatoon 3 because it creates a 1:1 ratio of playable inklings and octolings across the games. Agent 3 is always an inkling, Agent 4 is always an inkling, and Agent 8 is always an octoling. So when given the option to make New Agent 3 an inkling or octoling, I naturally went with the octoling to keep it even.
Same! That was my logic as well
The lore behind Octolings really drew me to them ever since the octo expansion days.
This comment was quite a fun read and it revealed some details i as an inkling wouldn't have ever noticed, so thanks for sharing this lol
To me, it looks more like the inklings were the one testing the weapons, examining the scope, the range and whatnot while the octolings, were having a little bit of fun with it, a total reversal of Splat2
So you're telling me that Octolings are hardened war veterans.
omg this is so cool to learn !
Yeah even though I play as an Octoling I think the Inkling swim form looks better too, the shape is so iconic!
Funnily enough one of the reasons I love octo is cuz I LOVEEEE their swim form.
i really like octolings, but none of the octo hair looks like the type of hair i want. i have long hair in real life but there aren't really any long octo hairstyles
Same. And yes, all us inklings loooove clam blitz
my personal headcanon is that splatsville has a higher octoling population because they’re much more accepting towards them
besides generally preferring how much more inhuman they look, I also prefer the squid form over the octopus form. I find it cuter, and I love how when you super jump as an inkling, you look kind of like an arrow with your pointy head-
I love the octo swim form, with the roundness and the tentacle mustache, but the clarity of direction from the Squid shape is just so helpful for newer players
This is me too 😂😂I love the squid form compared to the octopus form
@@yemsterredon't let me catch you in a match.
It's a fight everyday and it's awesome to have that be represented in my favorite game 🥰
I hope you are doing well! You are more then your disability and you are loved! 🤍❤️🩹
My old friend was weirdly lowkey racist and so they would never have played an octoling, i found that interesting.

"few things" ya kidding me bro
Funnily enough, 4 and 8 are canonical roommates, so it's cool to see similar headcanons applied to splatoon 3 :D
Me to I have my inkling and octoling be roommates I am going to start add girl octoling and inkling today ❤
I like to switch between my inkling sona and my agent 8. Love both equally, and makes it easy to swap for fest synergy!

Nice to see someone else making that comparison (though Elite players are still a tragically small minority, especially since most of the newer titles don't have them as playable anymore, so I'm pleased Octolings got a happier situation here.).
i chose inklings because they're cool
even if they are the minority now, I still prefer being an Inkling

Back in 2018 I got the Octo Expansion exclusively to play as an octoling, thankfully an amazing DLC came along with that decision.
I think the reason I'm more attracted to playing Octoling over inklings is that I have a friendly, semi-friendly personality. I see inklings as energetic and more extroverted while octolings as more introverted and shy to others. Style-wised, their hair design I really enjoyed.
I see Inklings as food and Octolings as predators.

(Well, it isn't an illusion per se, but it does reinforce the idea to the viewer.)
There's also the fact that for Octolings, the mass of their tentacles is mainly towards their scalp and gets thinner as it moves down, emulating how human hair works. An Inkling's tentacle mass is usually at the end of their hair, and that's the opposite of how human hair works, so they feel less human adjacent.
Lol I always just thought that the inklings were cute and octolings were cool. But now that I think about it that makes sense
@@crafted_myth2392 Octoling hair is also animated more gracefully almost as if they were moving on their own, probably referencing the fact that octopus have brain cells in all their tentacles so they sorta have a 'mind of their own'
I just play as an Octoling because I'm used to it now
I don't think either of them are more rounder than the other.
@ScribbleSpecters I joined splatoon 2 at the last minute haha, and that's when I began randomly adding lore to my ocs
And you're welcome! I love your animations and videos so much! Keep yp the good work :D
Octoling seemed cuter to me because they were shy and I love how their swim form is so round and huggable. I think inklings are cute too, just not as cute.
Don't forget thé voice lines too !
Yeah, Inklings are bolder and give more an "extroverted" vibe. Octolings are more subtle, and the lore holds them in a place that makes them become more relatable in general.
me, just playing inkling bc why not :
Hey! It's Blue Kirby! I haven't noticed you on a while. Nice to see you're still around
I was waiting for someone to say this!! Octopuses are just more popular “favorite creatures” irl than squids in my experience. People like their intelligence and other abilities!
ive just always thought it looks like a cool mohawk type thing
Absolutely prefer inklings specifically for how non-human they look, the mask around their eyes is definitely what struck me the most and the pointy ears really tap into my love for elves and other supernatural creatures! And tbfh as of now it feels more original to play an inkling (no shade to octo players but the data is there now pfft)
Bro's speaking straight facts 🤝
I personally really like how Octolings in their octopus form look like they have moustaches
This is a crazy underrated and high quality video with the drawings, animations, and editing! Nice work bro !!!
Same!
Exactly my reason, thanks for letting me explain why I use octolings without having to explain why I use octolings!
The thing is I haven't played Octo Expansion and use Octolings. Maybe it's because I made an animation based off the dlc and made me attached to them more lol
In my opinion, the majority is cephalopods.
I can't deny the Inkling hairstyles are really fun, and I like their voices too.
i knew players could switch using an amibo but i have no clue if theres a way to do it without one
@@enderwolf1496you can!! I switch around a lot too
@@enderwolf1496 Yep, just go into the Options tab, to Other, and then hit Player Settings. It'll let you go through character customization again whenever you want!
@@baconsandwich1887 omg really!
I used octolings because I was proud of finishing the octo expansion campaign thing, and then felt attached to the octoling I was using, which is why I still use them
I played as an octoling in the beginning but I grew fond of inkling goofiness and overall casualty. Octolings are more elegant and cool imo
The art style in ScribbleSpecters' videos:
"We're awesome"-🐙🤝🦑-"Agreed"
I FELT BAD SKIPPING, this video slays so far
Same, their cateyes are adorable
11:22 This, this part right here is one of the sole reasons i stuck with inklings in splatoon 3. Not having octo expansion in 2 made me feel like i was missing out, both in AND outside the side-story, but at the same time it built some strange sense of pride in me that made me happy with not swapping over when given the option. Even if octolings have much deeper lore and background than inklings, and i even find them cooler in a lot of ways.
Also, remember when they quite literally *put both species at WAR with eachother in that splatfest? For FUN even?*
Race war!
I’m just a dumb kid and I didn’t even realize when I was playing Splatoon two but there are people where an OCTO expansion crap I don’t know what octo expansion was. I didn’t know anything about Splatoon lore, but I like playing as an OCTO
11:42
Octolings are so adorable, especially the female ones got these baby like faces that are so squishable looking.
Not you teaching me stats more than my actual college professor did
I like the Inkling voice and feel comfortable being one.
After playing splatoon 1, and not playing splatoon 2, the option to play as octolings was a welcome surprise
XD
So yeah, it’s just a matter of comfort for me, but sometimes if I’m in the mood I’ll play as an inkling for funsies.
Long time.
This type of video was honestly such a delight! Thank you for putting in the time and energy, I personally thoroughly enjoyed it
I just love being Inkling!
Being an ex-soldier working for the Octarians is a big part of why she is the way she is.
this is corny
@@pluuuvio You got nothing better to do than post cringe on 6 month old comments? That's sad.
@@artisticpsychologist3679 based response
I was wondering what you were working on so intently over the last few months. I'm super impressed by the hard work put into this.
this videos quality blew my mind you REALLY deserve more attention! top tier youtuber down to the editing, hand drawn animations and math is always a W to see. i felt obligated to comment just to boost this among the algorithm
aaa tysm, I appreciate it a ton!
as an octoling since the octo expansion came out, i loved seeing how more and more octoling started to show up in the plaza, almost like after the events of the dlc they finally found the courage of showing themselves without hiding their appearance
i know that that's just a thought of mine, but i always felt like it was somehow lore accurate
Are we sure that you aren’t an octoling irl?
Casas miroki VANEEKO squee-waemi! Kopii naeko ngyes. Uki zamaka... Tsa-qwaa!
This is actually really helpful for my sciences class, thanks...
I'm confident that there have been times when I'd have earned more than three gold Medals in one match, but of course, it only showed three, leaving out at least one that I should have gotten, based on looking at my end-of-match stats.)
There's someone else in this Comments section that also wondered if Splatoon 1 veterans might lean more towards Inklings due to the history and hypothesized that higher Ranks could have more Inklings.
Personally Inkling and it got cemented by the Octo Expansion, because of how cool Agent 3 was, and it was amusing to basically have a cameo appearance of yourself if you've played Splatoon 1.
i’m one of the past inklings that switched over just cause i wanted to check it out, but i love octos and inklings equally
it’s so cute that people will switch back and forth between octo/inkling like little ocs :) absolutely going to start doing this
also i’m so happy to now have this information, even if it’s entirely useless to most situations, it makes my heart happy :3
As an AP Stats student this makes me happy
I remember taking a statistics course back at the beginning of college. Being able to understand the terminology in the mathematical portion of the video made my little nerd in me really happy ❤️ I’m so glad the TH-cam algorithm threw this video at me, keep up the amazing work!
At 11:40 the reason people say octolings look cuter is because they actually have a slightly different facial structure than the inkling.
Personnaly, I have 4 littles OCs on this game, 3 octolings and 1 inkling and sometimes it's good to just switch appearance 😭😭😭
your video is absolutely incredible!! you put so much effort, and went above and beyond and it's all super admirable
Me and a friend actually did our final statistics project on Splatoon! Instead of Inklings and Octolings, we did Average Points per Game Mode. It took a load of work, but we did it!
That's awesome! I'm glad y'all were able to see your project through to the end :D
The amount of data you needed for this is crazy, your dedication for science is insane! Great job!!!
As a newer player I just like the way that the octolings look more but i certainly like the inklings aswell
so glad splatoon 3 solved cephalopod racism
I really like how Inkling's appearance is, I think they're very cute!
Though I love octolings and would play them because they feel relatable to me.
Been an Octoling since Splatoon 2. In that game, the majority were Inklings.
