9:23 I personally think that Inkling/Octoling hobbies are just one's personal preferences, just like how it is with us. Some Inklings/Octolings might like video games, while others might like sports (other than Turf War), dancing, art, exercising, or any combination of those plus more. Heck, there might even be some Inklings/Octolings that DON'T like Turf war.

Respawn pads, aside from being a video game mechanic to literally respawn, is a beacon for the inkling or octoling to have a definitive safe area to rush back to reform into their normal size.
Their souls that fly off when splatted are still the inkling or octoling itself, but is a defense mechanism developed so that they can essentially fly themselves back to a safer area and respawn. I’m following this “flying” logic along the reasoning of the Japanese Flying squid and how it can spread its fins to create lift in the air (or in game super jumping).
Anyways, in normal games, your inkling soul floats up and back to spawn. In both story modes, when fighting a boss battle, Octo samurai for this example will try and respawn into his own mobile spawn point, but ultimately just explodes presumably because agent 4 and agent 8 already slapped him around enough and damaged the spawn point so bad.
I should probably expand on Toni Kensa and Marie's relationship:
In the Splatoon 2 art book, it is shown that the Kensaki family emblem (the one Toni Kensa is a part of) in embroidered on Marie's kimono, and the Octo Canyon armor has the Toni Kensa logo on it as well. While their relationship is never explicitly stated, we can assume that they're related due to this.
I think when it comes to Tartar being alive, we could take a page from the manga. After the explosion, Marina takes its "corpse" with her, saying something along the lines of "I hope you can see the difference someday" regarding Humanity and Inklings/Octarians. It's implied that Marina might have tried fixing it in the manga, and while the canon is a bit different compared to the game canon, I think they left that question open so that they can bring them back if they have more ideas.

If you're referring to the corocoro manga I'm pretty sure that's non-canon? I've never read it tho.
@@ChampionMahina I stated that the canon is different than the main games, but has some similarities/parallels. I think its the CoroCoro one.

1:17 Lol I always imagine myself the teams meet up and decide what colour their ink is gonna be. Sounds a bit childish, I know, but it's a bit like sports, you get to hear what colour outfit you're gonna wear before a match begins so yeah
For the ink color changing, I think maybe they can change their colors at will whenever they feel like it, but that would leave a few plot holes to be answered. And for the record, I don’t know if this is canon, but in a 2018 concert video, pearl and marina can be seen changing their ink colors in plain sight.

Pretty sure in like one of the 2014 (I think??) splatoon directs it says that Inklings can change their appearance at will. This is purely memory based so I could be wrong lol.

In my personal opinion i think that in turf wars they change their ink color when they enter the base for the first time so they can make the teams, and maybe they can change their ink color with some product but i don't think they can change it naturally. Maybe just their "birth color" or something but no idea.
I mean theoretically the inkling / octoling hair colour thing may not be entirely hormonal since there was canonically an inkling with rainbow hair at one point, and it's a little hard to see but in the splat 3 trailers some inklings have a slight tint of a second colour on their hair as well, so the hair colour(s) could be maintained with enough concentration, like a skill that you can get better at over time.

Rainbow hair i think is one of the band members has 4 large tentacles, each one with a different color and the gradient in 3 is a returning feature from 1
there's that inkling from one of the bands who has rainbow hair because of a genetical condition or something, but they still exist it wasn't like at one point they just disappeared from the face if the earth
So in the lore (at least if I remember correctly) it is mentioned that human bones are common finds, so does this mean that other human artifacts would be common finds too? And I guess to expand on that, does that mean that an inkling or octoling could have found human weapons and maybe even used them?

The sniper weapon could have been repurposed cus the bullet didn’t do any thing to the inklings. They are mostly ink condensed right?

Was hoping you'd mention the jellyfish hive mind caste. They make up probably 80% of all actual work in the economy. Inklings seem to have a luxurious and hedonistic lifestyle and that they have the option to work or not because of this. Kinda analogous to automation in real life.
My head canon, and this should definitely be real, is that the inklings and octolings have a default ink color that they could change if they wanted to
I think the hair colour thing might come down to the respawn point. Since they use compresed ink to revive those little inkling souls, maybe they can chose witch colour of ink by putting certain type of ink on the machine? That would explain why a whole squad can have the same colour since they're all respawning on the same spawn point.

*Why do inklings die in water?*
Inklings evolved from the ocean which is *salt* water. Most stages in game contain *fresh* water. As a salt water creature they cannot live in fresh water and will die of *Water Intoxication.* With the stages that *do* posses salt water there are death barriers preventing you from touching it in the first place.
*What about salmon run?*
Salmon are salt water creatures too but they migrate upstream (*fresh water*) to spawn. And salmon run takes place during their spawning.
*Can fresh water reservoirs be that big?*
As a matter of fact yes. Above the state of Ohio lies Lake Erie which is so huge you can’t see the other side.
*Anything to prove this?*
In octo expansion after you beat the game, you can look through the hole a *certain someone* made. Through that hole you can see what appears to be a layer of water, meaning they are *under* the water. Also the place is called Deep *Sea* Metro. This concludes my scientific analogy of a kids game.

Although I do have one suspicion about adult /older inklings/octolings in the splatoon 3 trailer there is an inkling with half dried tentacles, I believe I heard somewhere that octolings/inklings tentacles dry as they get older or something? I don’t know if this is correct or incorrect. Can someone tell me?
Yes! Though it isnt a natural process, its something they do by choice. "Sundrying" is a method that inklings use to prolong their life by drying out their ink, Cap'n Cuttlefish does this which is why he appears crusty and without an ink colour. I think the new hairstyle is likely them drying the tips of the hair specifically for the style of it, or perhaps it could be due to the hot weather out there!

About the ink colour, we see Pearl and Marina change ink colour in the live irl concerts, where their tentacles get a glitching effect, turn white and change to the new colour, which implies that its controlled by will

My headcanon for Octavio never changing forms is that is has something to do with how his tentacles are used to operate the other bosses. Or it's maybe he's doing some sort of life-preserving technique like Cuttlefish. Also I assumed we only see him in his octoling form, not his human form

Also, I was wondering, do Inklings die/get splatted if they drink water? Or can they drink it normally? Or only diluted? It's just an interesting question to think about.
They drink it and also take gentle showers in it.

When announ cing maps (I think specifically Starfish Mainstage), Pearl says something along the lines of "Remember to hydrate between battles". Meanwhile, Marina says "That sounds like good advice until you remember water is lethal to us", so it's therefore lethal to them in every form
I think it's only if they are submerged, like a shower is fine cause it's just sprinkles and even a bath is fine as long as it isn't too much water, but like, if they drink water repeatedly it would be too much probably. just my hc

i learned this in school, octopus have the abilty to change their color, to blend in to their enviroment. i dont know how squids can change color tho.
Well it is entirely true that we don't know how squid can change their color, take note that there's deep sea squids that actually use bioluminescent I think, so maybe that's behind it? Photophores is what ables them to glow so maybe they evolved to use that in the surface to change color
5:45 Correct me if I'm wrong, but not confirmed as far as I'm aware? All we know is that the Kensa family crest is embroidered on her kimono, which COULD mean they're related, but even if they are their relation is unknown. For all we know they could be siblings, he could be her uncle, etc.
Is ink armor some kind of skin secretion?
It reminds me alot towards waterphobic, a substance that completely blocks off water,so maybe using the special is needed to make a huge amount of the substance to block off enemy ink for a short duration

I imagine with the ink color changing thing inkos and octos have “dominant colors” or basically their default at birth. Maybe it’s genetic? I dunno. But they can change their ink color temporarily by going through some kind of shower before super jumping towards their spawn. And just like the ink on the stage that evaporates after awhile, so does the temporary ink color.
2:45 Not sure if this helps, but in the splatoon manga there are hints in the character descriptions that there are different socio economic classes. Army is said to be from a noble squid family. And in Laceless’s inkling almanac it is said he is the son of the gardener at Emperor and Prince’s household which not only tells us that Prince and Emperor’s family are rich enough to have a personal gardener but that yeah that Prince and Laceless more or less come from different socio economic backgrounds.
Edit: I just remembered that there’s a bunch of lines abt Pearl’s family being super duper rich, so wouldn’t that also imply that?

There’s this one part in the splatoon manga where the four squids in team blue get assigned in a group when they were younger, and they get assigned blue group and get told to “change they’re colours to blue” although the splatoon manga is kinda known for not being cannon
I guess that the respawn machine plays some part in changing ink colour, or some technology, since it would make sense that ink colour is somewhat hereditary.
Ok, so there are some questions I wish were answered, like what's deal with that Mount Nantai? Since I've heard many mentions about it in some other lore videos. And what does NILS in that statue's name means? (Unless it just means "annihilate" and i'm overthinking about it)

Splatoon has a manga. In one of them there is a end part where the protagonist and his team meet for the first time as kid in daycare they are told to try and change colors. I think one of them had a hard time doing it so it may need practice

I think changing color is really just annoying or inconvenient so they don't do it as much, because why would adrenaline turn you purple or green, I wouldn't think they're different dosages
Are there trans inklings/octolings?
Not that I know of but its entirely possible! (this is just a headcanon but) I would assume that since they can transform their bodies so much they can likely change their biological sex at will, just by reforming themselves with the opposite sex. And of course nothing is stopping an inkling or octoling from having surgery or simply presenting more like the opposite sex, much like humans do.
It is entirely possible, if they are able to change skin tone and hair color they can most likely Change their biological body
It's hard to confirm but alot of the in universe musicians are gender nonconforming and splatoon generally avoids gendered pronouns in alot of original japanese promo material so there are quite a few characters that folks have suspected are nb. It's def possible it's just a question if any known characters actually are.

I think the reason their hair changes is bc they inject ink into their hair, whatever effect happens from that ink happens (like maybe a green hair being injected by purple gets like, really sick) they get splatted and respawned and the hair color changes to the correct color

There was a video made about how inkling's bodies were formed and if they have bones. I don't remember who made it, but it vanished. It talked about the respawners and the inkling's souls. I'm trying to find it but no luck. Was that your video?

Inklings aren't cannibalistic at all, cannibalism is when you eat your own species such as a human eating another human, but an inkling eating another undeveloped squid, unless it isn't another inkling, isn't cannibalism, even it is a subspecies

You didn't really answer my question, I know they can change their skin whenever I just wanna know which one do they start of with when they are able to develop skin color and how so. Does it depend on their ink color they are born with, species, gender, parents, region, or is it random.

As far as we know, we know nothing. All we know is that they begin without a skin tone as they're alot more squid shaped, then they slowly become more humanoid, before finally forming skin when they gain control of their forms at around 14. As for what determines their skin tone we dont really know, we havent seen many parental sets in-game, but we have seen Callie, Marie, and cuttlefish all having similar skin tones and Marina still using darker skin when she was younger.
If I had to theorise, I would say they likely can do whatever they want with it from the second their skin forms, usually choosing to have a similar tone to their family because of familiarity. Either that or its much like humans with it being determined by the parents (damn you, inconclusivity.)

It's already stated that squids can produce ink but since evolution came along EVERYTHING changed in their biological bodys, they have ink sacs inside and when doing turf they can refill. Best answer from me is that evolution is what gave them different ink color

Then what about cuttlefish? I mean it's two different entire species so maybe both get different in their two forms. Either way Dj oct looks way more active then cuttlefish, it's either because oct is using his superior form and using all of it's benefits against the inklings or it could be that maintaining the human form takes too much to handle due to old aging, remember that both oct/ink human forms don't have bones but cartilage so maybe that's why

There is actually a quote in one of the artbooks I believe that states ink as harmless to drink like water, but nothing about them actively doing it.
