  • Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic is a great song! I can’t read that without hearing the chorus in my brain and feeling a little happier. I covered two other songs by The Police as soon as I could possibly manage a version when I first started playing drums because I grew up listening to Zenyatta Mondatta on repeat. Every Little Thing is actually from Ghost in the Machine along with some other classics. I have little doubt I will revisit Stewart Copeland and The Police again in the future as well.
    I talk briefly about what makes Stewart such an interesting drummer for me but it’s a simplified explanation. I say he pushes or plays in front but he actually does it in a way that can’t really just be called rushing. Like many great drummers, he’s able to isolate the groove he plays with his hand from the feel he has with his feet. He keeps everything in the pocket with his kick while he provides so much excitement and energy with where he puts his snare and fills.
    That’s without even getting into the fact that his playing style is so distinct and recognizable that IMO, he’s one of a very short list of drummers that are as responsible for their bands overall sound as the singer or songwriters. I learn something every time I sit down to play along with Stewart Copeland and it’s always a blast to decipher his intricate hat work and signature writing. Yep, I’m a fan :) If you want a laugh, you might look up my first two attempts at The Police on Roxanne and So Lonely. I think I was 10 and 12 years old at the time.
    I’m 15 years old and I want to be a professional musician when I grow up. I try to play lots of instruments but the one that I feel most at home on is a drum set. I would say the only thing that impresses me more than a great musician is a great songwriter so I also spend some of my time trying to learn the magic of songwriting. I thought it would help me keep focused on music if I started a drum series where I learned a new song every couple of weeks. After 4 years, it’s now turned into a larger musical search but my goal hasn’t changed. Hopefully, I will keep doing it, keep loving music and keep getting better.

    This is awesome. I'm an old drummer, and I studied some of the same drummers you have, particularly Bonham, Peart and Moon. And then I heard Outlandos in a pair of Koss cans around 40 years ago. I remember thinking 'This changes everything'. Steely Dan's Aja changed a lot as well, but there are at least 4 world-class, hall-of-fame drummers on that record. They were all geniuses. Stewart was only one, but he moved the ball almost as far. From the bottom of all drummers' hearts, thank you for keeping great, acoustic, organic drumming alive.

    Such a surprise, to hear the Drummer talk about what she was doing; and why !! AND, for her to make mention of Stuart's snare - Because it makes an incredible difference in the way sound is produced.

    Man that's a great job. Steward Copeland stuff is super challenging and you make it look easy.

    • @miamorrismusic
      @miamorrismusic  5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I really appreciate that and it's funny you mention the early vids. Not everyone likes how much I smile or that I perform, and I used to consider doing something else occasionally. Then, I happened to be answering a comment on my very first video and I watched it and laughed as I saw it's exactly how I played when there was NO WAY anyone would see what I posted. I love to play and apparently perform. I'm glad you like it because it's me :)

      People would pay me cold cash NOT to sing, much less anything musical. That being said, Mia’s solo guitar videos are dirge like, make me think of funerals. The charismatic spontaneity of her drumming is no where to be felt in her singing and guitar. An exceptionally beautiful voice, but in the manner of gloom. I am no expert, but I know what I like.

    Just wanted to say that I really enjoyed your video. However, the piccolo snare would have worked, but you needed to tighten that top head up to the max. It sounded like you were hitting a cardboard box. Stewart tightens all of his drums up, even toms and Bass very tight. I played in a Police cover band for two years on the road. I know. Next... Your cross sticking on the snare rim is no where close to Stewarts sound. You really need to practice daily until you find the "sweet spot" on a drum stick to get the correct sound. Listen to the old classic country albums. Listen to Nashville studio drummers like the late great Buddy Harmon, Jerry Carrigan, the late Larrie Londin, Tommy Wells, and especially the great Eddie Bayers. Stewart Copeland listened to these cats as well as many great Jazz drummers to get that correct stick sound on the side of the snare rim. Please practice this with a size 5A or 5B PRO MARK or VIC FIRTH Oak Stick. That will help you achieve that sound when you discover the correct spot. With all that being said... Your work on the Hi-Hat and Ride/Crash Cymbals was spot on. EXCELLENT! Your Bass Drum parts were spot on. Plus you have a very natural good look behind the drums. Your posture is very good. For your age you are doing great. ;-) I am 53 years old and have drummed for over 30 years, and made a very good living at it. Don't take my criticism in a bad way, I just know that you have the potential to one day be a super drummer and do it for a living. I want you do it all correctly, and get it right while you are young. My hats off to you for even attempting to cover POLICE and Stewart Copeland material. Keep On Drummin' !!

    • @miamorrismusic
      @miamorrismusic  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      First off, thank you for taking the time and I'm never offended by people willing to help me. I thought maybe that drum could get a lot more pop but it's the first time I've ever even hit one let alone tune it. I borrowed it and have a ton to learn about gear, especially acoustic drums. I've been thinking my 7's are maybe getting to be something I should consider experimenting with and I can see where a little more weight would help the rim shots have a little more surface to work with. you sound right on and thanks again for the input. I play a lot of instruments but the drums are my favorite so I hope to keep improving.

    • @bamamoondog9039
      @bamamoondog9039 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for your nice reply. If you live in Nashville, if you could talk with some of the older drummers that play down on Broadway in all those clubs, they could show you how to get that perfect snare rim sound. Or better yet, just book an hour or two with one of the great studio drummers up there, like Eddie Bayers or Paul Liem. They could show you so many tricks. I watched one of your videos where you did a country train beat to a rock song. AWESOME. You've got that down pat with sticks, now practice as much as possible with brushes. If you keep on playing and trying new things, by the time you graduate High School you'll be Road Ready to Tour. If you learn to read drum charts, you will be in demand up there. I would recommend continuing your education by going to college and studying music. I subscribed to your channel and I'll look forward to each of your new videos. My best to you!

    Outstanding! I saw the Police three times throughout the eighties,once with the Go-Go's as their opening act! They were great every time. Another band recommendation try watching BABYMETAL - Pa Pa Ya! It's just the craziest thing,Thrash-Metal mixed with Japanese pop music this time they add Japanese Rap! I find myself liking it,more & more.

      @Justin Time Even though you didn't ask here's a story from one of those shows. After the concert we were slowly making our way out of the parking lot,it typically took 45 minutes or so to weave our way through heavy traffic. My buddy had the window rolled down and was hanging out of it,yelling,asking if anyone had a beer,whistling at girls,being a 20 year old. When a guy in the next car yells,"Shut up dork!". Now I went to the concert with 5 people two of my brothers,a life long friend and two guys from work. These two guys,great guys,happened to be black from Chicago,we were in Rosemont Illinois,a suburb of Chicago. So my friend exits the car,followed closely by the 5 of us,I could see instantly this is not what our fellow concert goers were expecting. All around us,windows were being rolled up and doors being locked,the guy next to us,who gave the "dork" comment hurriedly rolled up his window and locked his door. We proceeded to knock on the windows and rock the car,a little while this was going on the four guys in the car just looked straight ahead. After a while traffic started moving and we made our way out of the lot,my friend Curtis,one of the black guys says,"Anytime you got trouble,just call me". We all laughed,I fully expected a visit from the police,but it never came. This was way before cell phones,something like this wouldn't/couldn't happen now,but in 1986 it seemed to happen to me,a lot. So that's my story,99% true,just a smidge of embellishment.
