Copeland plays off beat better than any rock drummer I can think of. And this cover is phenomenal.
Most certainly, his background of being trained as a jazz drummer certainly made him one of the most interesting rock drummers ever
I don’t know how much Reggae you’ve listened to, but I babysat a collection of almost 200 Reggae albums in the summer of 1999 and Copeland has a ton of Reggae influence in his style. Like, he’ll do things that are not influenced by Reggae, it’s straight up Reggae. Quarters on the bass, and some off beat, funky but consistent rim for 2-3 measures, even if he goes slight off-off beat, because that’s Reggae - they can’t help themselves either.
I would say he takes the Reggae influence to the Police by adding extra spaces in the Reggae groove, where the typical response is to add notes. It’s what separates those who can read music and count from people like me, lol.

Sweet Jesus this was it. Kit sounded fabulous (snare was right on, floor-tom was superb), hi-hat work was impeccable, fills were both creative and fun yet true to the style of The Police and perfectly balanced. All of it wow.

Great cover! I love how you show how he does the beat on the 1 before the chorus. Most drum coverers miss that that.
