I’m a relatively new shooter and was at the range today with my 365 and noticed this happening to me about 50% of the time on the last round. Checked my grip after watching this video and sure enough, thumb was on the slide lock. Thank you for this video!!
I came across your video last night after searching the Internet for failure to slide lock to the rear.. I was at the range yesterday and it was happening every time on the last shot. I grabbed my pistol last night and gripped it like I always do and sure enough I'm thinking this is what I am doing!! I went to the range today and adjusted my grip like you mentioned and 100% problem solved... Sometimes it isn't the gun! Thanks so much for your video..
Thanks for making this video! I was trying to troubleshoot my gun, second guess my ammo, take my gun apart clean it and look for worn parts. I couldn’t figure out the issue and after watching your video I realized I should’ve been troubleshooting me. I went back to the range and sure enough it was my grip. I spent a lot of time dry firing and working on my grip for period of time because I couldn’t get to the range. Turns out I didn’t realize I was creating bad habits. Lesson learned not only on my grip but to not drill dry without going to the range periodically to make sure what I’m practicing is working or if creating problems. Thanks again
Well, it certainly can’t be “ignorance is bliss”, due to the fact that you were concerned about the abnormal slide situation that was being created by your hand. We can all learn new things every single day, as long as we are honest to ourselves. Well done Sir !
Replaced the OEM barrel with a new barrel and was breaking it in today, and this started happening, which REALLY confused me. As a fellow Marine Corps veteran, I can't believe I was making this simple mistake. I took the firearm out, gripped it and wouldn't you know, that was EXACTLY what I was doing. Thanks for this information!
The 365 not locking back brought me to your channel. Right out of the gate I was all PFFFFTTTT, Ive got a lifetime shooting! Then you said the same. Lol. Went back to the range today, with your info, thumb moved, NOT an issue. Learned something new. Thanks.
Big thanks for sharing. Went first time to the range with my own pistol sig 365xl and it wasn’t locking after shooting last round. The officer at the range that was helping brought different brand of ammo and shot two of them and it locked just fine, he told me that my ammo are “shit”. I went online and search for reviews for my ammo and people have no troubles with them at all(igman 9mm 124gr). I have large hands and After watching your video I am 100% confident that’s my case too!
A huge, HUGE thanks for this video! I was shooting a full sized SA XD .40 cal. I swithced to a CZ P10 S (sub compact). After going through a a number of magazines, half the time after the last round, the slide would lock, the other half it went forward. I was suspecting either a weak spring in my magazines or a weak spring in my slide lock. No more "suspecting" for me. Ya nailed it. Going from a full size to a sub compact with the same grip (I have large hands, too), I was inadvertently putting pressure on the slide lock! I would never have figured this one out on my own. Again, THANKS!!!
Same here, I usually shoot my Glock 19 but decided to take my new Sig P 365X this time .Now I realize what I was doing wrong. I have to remember the X on the hand with the P 365X.
I came here cause this malfunction kept happening to me yesterday and after what you said, I gripped my gun and yup my thumb would be straight up on the slide lock button. I can almost guarantee that’s what was causing it. Thanks man, I’ll definitely try something different next time.
It happened to me twice today. I had the gun checked out. Everything looks good. It must be my thumb. Thanks for the suggestion. Looking forward to trying it out.
Thank for the enlightenment. I got the same problem at the range. I know there is something wrong but I just didn’t know what is it. At first I thought it could be the ammo but no. Now I know. Thank you
Wow!!!! Awesome!! I bought a Walther pdp a couple of months ago and I’ve been to the range 3 times with it. Each time I’ve had trouble with the slide locking back. And I think because it has a bigger slide stop this might be the culprit. Definitely going to try it. Thanks.
Dude… I really thought something was wrong with either my glock 19 or the ammo I was using. Until today I took my little brother shooting and it was his first time shooting a hand gun. I showed him proper grip and the slide locked back for him each time.. but not for me. I taught him shooting hand thumb high and I was thumb way forward pressing hard into the slide/frame.. never thought about the fact I might be hitting the slide release. Thank you so much!
I was having this issue. Thought it was my gun until it was happening on other handguns. Fantastic information as it corrected my problem as well. Thanks!
Thanks so much for this video! That happened to me a few times at the range today with my almost brand new Glock 17. I probably moved my right thumb over the slide stop without realizing it.
Same thing happened to me today at the range with my 43x and I thought something was happening with my gun until I looked this video up and now it makes sense
Thank you sir!! Took hold of my gun that I was having this problem with and I'll be dog gone, just like you showed. Tried some of my other pistols and the size and slide position of the other pistols was such my thumb did not interfere with the operation of the slide lock. X marks the spot from now on whenever I grab one of my semi-autos!!! Great video!!
*Getting my thumb off the slide release worked for me with my new Sig P320X Compact - so THANK YOU! I will say, however, that I never had this problem with ANY Glock pistol that I've shot, so I had to learn a new way to hold this pistol to avoid the problem. The problem never occurred with my Sig M18 (which I just sold because I hated to "too high" safety location) because my thumb rests on its external safety instead of the slide release*
Great video. “Dead on.” I noticed this was happening with a new pistol that had a wider grip than my previous EDC. Then I noticed that I started having the same issue with my EDC? It is me totally. I’ll start training this method immediately. Thanks for sharing. Makes so much sense.
This happened to me today at the range when I was trying out their HK P30L. I figured out it must be my thumb accidentally hitting the super long slide release lever. I tried moving the thumb away (sticking it up in the air to be sure it can't hit anything) and sure thing, the problem disappeared 😁 Thank for sharing your tip with the X 😉
Thank you I took bad advice from a review of my gun which caused me to thumb the catch. This small change and confidence in my gun is restored. I wasn't having this problem before. The advice was to hold the safety down with the thumb to prevent accidentally switching it on while firing. The new thumb position prevents both from happening. Thanks again.
Took G43x MOS out for maiden voyage today…slide not locking back…in two occasions, slide failed to cycle and round was stuck in chamber…finally worked slide enough to get rounds out. Stopped at that point. Picked up my G2C and slide not locking back on empty mag -- I had been shooting low and left,!so trying some grip and pressure changes. Probably operator error 😆 Thanks for the tip; I’ll try cross-thumbs on next range session.
Thanks so much. I was shooting the DR920 and couldn’t understand what my issue was either. I was actually stopping the slide stop level from engaging as well. Thabks
Just, thank you. I built a Sig Sauer P320 FCU and found myself resting my thumb on the slide stop 🤦🏿. I found myself wondering whether it was the magazine or not. I know it was my error because my thumb naturally wants to rest on the slide stop. Thank you.
After many years of shooting, I have recently developed this problem. It was occurring with both my Glock 27 and Springfield hellcat. Planning on going to the range tomorrow. I will certainly try this technique. Thanks for posting.
I am very new to that grip in question andI had this issue consistently on my new S&W Shield Plus yesterday. I did not have it on my old Regular Shield, but… I’ll have try my regulars old grip on the new Shield Plus to see if it’s me and not the weapon.
Semper Fi brother! I thought I had a mag problem! It only happened twice to me today. It was my first session with my new 365 and only on +p ammo . I think I was giving a little extra grip with that ammo and it makes since! Thanks for a great video!
That just happened to me at the range today with my glock. I was mad as h***. Thanks for the video. As soon as you said it, I knew that was what I done.
Im going to have to try this out. If I do 1 or 2 shots, it locks back 90% of the time. If I do 5+ shots, it almost rarely locks after last round. Definitely has to be grip. I had the feeling. thanks man, much appreciated from a new shooter.
Do you know how many people you made feel better with this vid? When this first started happening to me with a Glock, I thought there's no way I'm limp wristing, right?? After all, I'm an instructor! I usually try to hold my thumb more straight up to alleviate the issue, but I will try your suggestion! Thank you!
I've experienced both sides of this issue, I once would be pushing up on the slide release locking it back after like the 3rd round or whatever and now I just experienced the slide not locking back. I'll definitely be paying attention to my grip more and practicing
Was just at the range and the same problem was happening on both my pistols… welp at least I know what to focus on for my next trip. Appreciate this insight!
Wow. I thought my new G19 was broken 🤣 turns out this was the problem only it wasn’t my thumb, it was my left hand palm pressing against the slide release! Thank you so much for this video I had no idea!
This info is all fine well and good for righty shooters, but I'm a lefty and had this problem with my Beretta 92X. My thumb is nowhere near the slide release. I'm waiting to hear back from Beretta about what the problem might be. The gun is not even 2 years old and cleaned after each range use. Just an FYI and representing lefties...
just fired my new 365-- 70 rounds only locked by 3 times. thanks for the info. Im sure i need to change my grip. Or more likely just accept it. other than that -flawless.
i do the same thing. most pistols i don't get slide lock besides with 320s, 1911/2011s, and glocks with the kagwerks slide release. it's with my support hand palm though.
GREAT video!! Recently just got an optics ready Stoeger STR-9 and was having this exact problem, first I was like "Is this because I'm using subsonics and it's not broken in yet or is there something wrong with the gun or what?" but eventually I had a feeling I may have been doing this and when I took a look at how I was gripping it it became pretty damn clear this was user induced malfs. Next time I go to the range I'll DEFINITELY be trying this trick and seeing if it helps, thanks for the great video!!
How do like that gun? I have a Stoeger coach gun and it’s been treating me good.. a buddy was telling me about the str9 and how it’s a good budget fun. Lol I didn’t even realize they made handguns.
I appreciate your advised I bought a used usp and I hace the same problem. The slide release is much different that the one on the video. Is there any other advise you have for a usp? Thank you.
Wow, thanks so much!! This is exactly what I was doing and didn't realize. You did it on a P365? I've got a Hellcat...it's probably common among smaller handguns
If your not hitting the lock, More common issue is bad slide lock pin, spring or alignment. lCP and Glock are notorious. Either send it back or needs breaking in. Happened to me with 3 guns (out of 100 maybe).
Hey Gunner-Wow, I can tell this is what i am doing. Thanks for sharing the good intell. I would have been embarrassed if I had asked my gunsmith/shooting instructor friend and he told me that .. i am the problem. = )
Fantastic video. After 2 years of shooting my glock without incident, this exact thing happened to me. As soon as you said "user error" I face palmed lol. No need to call Glock

I agree, I teach that the left hand goes over the right, (opposite for lefties) not the other way around. Every time he brings his left hand up he changes his right hand grip. Not my choice of grip for target or comp.
I never thought of that! I’m glad I found your video. Next time out shooting, I’ll try my damndest to let you know if it worked for me. But, what you explained, makes a lot of sense!
I switched from thumbs forward to a thumbs down combat grip because I suck. I simply could not stop hitting the dang slide stop. Problem solved with the combat grip. Here's an interesting one, I had two failures to lock back on the last round. Knowing, as stated above, that I suck, I just figured that I was some how hitting the slide stop or some otherwise inhibiting the movement of the slide. I told the boss, the wifey, to watch me and try to see what I was doing to cause this. One magazine went no issue but on the next mag the slide failed to lock back.. It turns out, my jacket sleeve was making contact with the slide causing the failure.
Maybe you can help me. My neighbor has an old Spanish made ww1 semi auto that were made by everyone. In Spain and the basque area. Here's to hitch. After discharging one round. He tried to rack it BACK just to test ejection capabilities The slide would NOT move back to eject, there was a hot round in the barrel . So it was very dangerous. He dropped the mag, the slide would still not rack backwards to eject the round even with the magazine out. Had to just fire it, worked great. 1 rd. Cycled great, ejected, that was it. After that, he did give the pistol a deep CLEANING . Hasn't fired it since. Best thing to do now is take it to the range. Load it with 2 rounds and try again RIGHT??!?! he needs help j in cal & m/m It also has a 9 in a circle just below the cal/mm thing. 9, in a circle with a thin wreath going all the way around the inside of the circle. Photo on demand if you need one. ANY info would be greatly appreciated. Thank zou
How can I know if it is my thumb or anything wrong in the gun, before going again to the range? If I pull back the slide with an empty magazine and it stays open, does it mean the gun is ok? Thanks to whoever answers
Going through this now. Just bought a P365 and it’s not locking back the last round about 50% of the time. Will re adjust my grip next time i shoot it.
This isn’t the issue for me. I need to know how to fix a magazine that is not walking back. I have others that work one doesn’t trying to see how to fix it instead of buying a new magazine.
I’m a relatively new shooter and was at the range today with my 365 and noticed this happening to me about 50% of the time on the last round. Checked my grip after watching this video and sure enough, thumb was on the slide lock. Thank you for this video!!

Went to range today with my new gun and this happened, only twice tho.. this answer all my worries on my gun. thank you
Bingo… you solved my problem. Thanks!

I went to the range today and tried this technique with my 365XL and it works
Glad it helped.
Thank you !! Now I realize why this was happening to me at the range !
Excellent video, my man. Fixed my problem.
Guilty! Thanks for the simple answer to my frustration with my new VP9!

Thanks for this video. I almost thought my shield plus was having an issue.
Wow wow wow! This is gold. THANK YOU
You're welcome!
yes, that make sense, I having this issue from time to time, I through it was cause of cheap ammo.....i need to change thw way I grip, thanks a lot.
I've realized that's my mistake as well! Great advice can't wait to try it.
Very good explanation 👏
Wow, Thanks for the advice, Im going to go back to the range and try this.
Thank you for the advice..and thank you for your service sir 🙏
Yeah I’ve been doing the first one on my 320 xten, thanks for the video means a lot
Thanks, this makes great sense. Happens to me with my SIG.
Thank you for this info. It happened to me today. Now it makes sense
i do the same thing. most pistols i don't get slide lock besides with 320s, 1911/2011s, and glocks with the kagwerks slide release. it's with my support hand palm though.
Could that be the case with my CZp10s? My hands aren't huge. They aren't small either. Will give that a try though. Thanks!
Was having the same problem with my P10-C. I think that slide lock lever is like a big pad waiting for a thumb to mess it up.
Thought I was going insane… turns out my thumb was on the slide release and it’s not the gun! Thank you so much !
Just now realizing why I had the same problem at the range 20 minutes ago
Great video . My shadow 2 never had a issue . P10 and tp9sfx had this issue .
Thank you so much.
Great tip. Thanks you.
Glad it helped. Keep us posted!
How do like that gun? I have a Stoeger coach gun and it’s been treating me good.. a buddy was telling me about the str9 and how it’s a good budget fun. Lol I didn’t even realize they made handguns.
Thank you for the tip.
Damn, I'm about to sell an XDS because of this, but will try this first.
Probably sell it anyway.
THANKS!
Thank you so much, I was doing this exact thing.
I appreciate your advised I bought a used usp and I hace the same problem. The slide release is much different that the one on the video. Is there any other advise you have for a usp? Thank you.
Thank you!
I feel so stupid for not knowing I was doing this lmao
Thanks for this vedio. It helped mi. Same thing was happening to mi and i didnt relized. Blessed.
Thank you so much for the great info.
Wow, thanks so much!! This is exactly what I was doing and didn't realize. You did it on a P365? I've got a Hellcat...it's probably common among smaller handguns

Hey Gunner-Wow, I can tell this is what i am doing. Thanks for sharing the good intell. I would have been embarrassed if I had asked my gunsmith/shooting instructor friend and he told me that .. i am the problem. = )
God you are so right. Thank you.
You solve one of my problems ….. thanks
Good tip
Shot with gloves the other day, this happened consistently will adjust on Friday
Fantastic video. After 2 years of shooting my glock without incident, this exact thing happened to me. As soon as you said "user error" I face palmed lol. No need to call Glock
Huge thanks
Ya. I am doing this. Thanks.
Great video
Here cuzza this problem, hopefully it will solve the problem next time to the range.
Nice Tip My Friend 🤘😎👍💥
i have been shooting since in was 17, i am now 48 and i have NEVER EVER EVER had my thumb on that slide lock on ANY gun i have ever shot or owned.
So if the slide does not lock after the last round TO ME ... its not me, its the gun or cheap ammo.

I never thought of that! I’m glad I found your video. Next time out shooting, I’ll try my damndest to let you know if it worked for me. But, what you explained, makes a lot of sense!
Yes, please let me know.
@@DownRangeDaily It worked. 100%. I tried both ways. Thumb on the release. And thumb off. I had to change my grip, just like he showed in the video.
Thx. Great video
Thank you
I switched from thumbs forward to a thumbs down combat grip because I suck.
He tried to rack it BACK just to test ejection capabilities
The slide would NOT move back to eject, there was a hot round in the barrel .
Bro thank you so much i was in heavy confusion😅😅😅😅
Yup. Definitely my issue with the P365. All thumbs. Haha.
Going through this now. Just bought a P365 and it’s not locking back the last round about 50% of the time. Will re adjust my grip next time i shoot it.
Thank you!!!!
This video is 6 minutes too long. I'll continue to search for other mechanical reasons why my slide won't lock back.
Personally I was hoping he'd talk slower and repeat that same 7 sentences several more times
This helped me. I was at the range & they said limp wrist but they were wrong. My thumb was touching the slide lock like in this video
😂😂
This isn’t the issue for me. I need to know how to fix a magazine that is not walking back. I have others that work one doesn’t trying to see how to fix it instead of buying a new magazine.
This might be my problem. It didn't happen on my 43x until I installed an extended slide stop.
