@@Americam116 if it has the same screen like in the video and it is experiencing ghost touch then it has it.
Disconnecting the ribbon like shown in the video or replacing the screen will solve the issue.

Thanks for posting this; you made my Mazda's infotainment system useable again.
Mazda will pay dearly for not addressing this themselves, though, or making it into a recall free of charge. Never buying another vehicle from them again.

It was nerve wrecking to cut the ribbon, but SO THANKFUL it worked!!! The display on my 2017 Mazda 6 looks a little different than yours. There are WAY more screws (~4 big ones & 6 small ones) to disassemble to gain access to the ribbon, plus there isn't a white bar connected to the ribbon. Very glad it worked, and it only cost me $10 for a socket extender to get that first bolt. Thank you to the creator and to everyone who left tips in the comments! :)

Thank you so much for this video. My daughter’s 2016 Mazda CX5 Touring was having all sorts of issues with random button presses. We updated the firmware, did the Car Play upgrade and updated the Nav SD card hoping all that would fix stuff, but while it improved a little, the ghost, as we called it, still persisted. It wasn’t until I stumbled upon your video and some others discussing disabling the touch screen did everything resolve. While the 2016 CX5 Touring has a slightly different looking head unit, it’s still very similar to what you show here. The ribbon is at the bottom of the display and just needs to be unplugged/detached. I’m not a very techie person and found this a do-able project (especially after just having done the Car Play upgrade). Just a little bravery that it will all come back together and your video was all that was needed. A big thank you from my daughter and me for putting this together. All the best!

Absolute legend, worked perfectly. Our Mazda 3 also "ghosted" when driving as well. I thought the control module in the console was the issue, Mazda wanted $1100 for a replacement which would have done nothing, I would then have had to buy a screen. $2000 all up, so many thanks.

Thank you so much for posting this. My 2015 Mazda 3 was similarly possessed and your video was very clear. I was able to pull the ribbon cable and no more ghost touches. @@radieyevanov Thanks! To be honest, the only thing I ever found the touch screen useful for was entering addresses, but I haven't used the navigation system in years. I just use google maps or waze on my phone now. With all of the other infotainment functions, I always use the jog wheel anyway. The ghost touch issue was especially annoying for me because I had disabled the motion lockout, so my screen was going crazy all the time, not just when stationary. But I'll certainly check out your repair video when it goes live.

    • @radieyevanov
      @radieyevanov  ปีที่แล้ว +2

@@davec.4925 I am exactly the same as you! Never used the touchscreen so was easy to disconnect it. But at the time I made the video they didn't sell third party screens so it would have required buying the whole unit to get the touchscreen back. Now a third party screen is very cheap so I figured I'd put out a video about that.

Thanks for the post. Tried this on my 2017 CX-5. Was able to do it, but not without a couple of adjustments. In the 2017 CX-5 there is a small plastic piece blocking access to the “ribbon” you have to disconnect. Since it was either make this work or give $800 dollars to dealership for a new unit, we decided to cut off that plastic piece with a dremel tool. Success!! There were also a couple of additional bolts to remove, but those were no big deal. Couldn’t have done it without this video!

Pleased to report that this worked like a charm for my 2017 Mazda 6! The method for the 2017 is definitely a little more complicated and requires more disassembling. I also had to disconnect the plug for the start button which was quite unnerving. In order to access the ribbon, you have to open upon the screen entirely as in, remove the front plastic portion from the back plastic panel. At that point, the correct ribbon lines up with the plugs as shown in the video. It was easy to reassemble. I have exorcised my ghost!

Just did this to my mazda 6 2019, works perfectly. One update to my model year, plastic cover on my unit was covering the ribbon cable, you need to unscrew the remaining screws, tilt the bottom of the cover up and you can see the ribbon cable in the same spot as in the video. Fyi something holds the cover from the top- no need to remove the whole cover just make space to disconnect the ribbon+ plastic sometimes catches on the connectors, so pay attention to that. Thanks for the video!

Thank you for the video! The fix is fast and easy.
Two things to help those trying this themselves:
1: The decorative bezel clips are springs, they do not need to be depressed. Simply pry out the bezel
2: The screen ribbon cable is very hard to see with the screen assembled. The screen can be easily disassembled by removing the four small screws and separating the plastic frame from the base. Then pull the white ribbon cable keeper back towards the edge of the circuit board and pull the cable out of the connector.

(Mazda knew it but refused to recall just extended the warranty to 7 years which mine is denied by dealer, they said the sales had retired blah blah blah just do want to honour it anyway so I DIY...)
Just few tips to add to those got the same problem
    1. there are 4 more screws on the back and bottom, remove them and with a bit of force you can separate the plastic cover from the display unit. Make the gap wide open
    2. use the tiny flat head screwdriver to pull the white part outward, it will release the cable easily
    3. be careful when you're loosing and tighten that main screw at 4:43, you don't want to drop it! Trust me!

Good luck! It's just the bad touchscreens. Not Mazda's fault as they don't actually make the touchscreens but they have learned and switched them out on the newer ones.

Thank you. I can't blame them too much as they don't make the screens themselves and I don't think knew that they would be susceptible to damage after years of use. I have a new video coming out soon showing how to replace the screen and retain the touchscreen functionality.

Hi everyone. This seems like a perfectly useful fix if you can't get satisfaction through Mazda. However, as one comment below mentioned an extension of the warranty for this issue, I searched for such and found that it had indeed been extended to 7 years from the make of the car (at least in the U.S.). I can't seem to attach the downloaded bulletin here, but if you Google search: "2104-2016 Mazda3 - Mazda Connect Touch Screen Concern Warranty Extension Program - Special Service Program (SSP) B6" it will take you straight to the page where you can find the bulletin to download as a PDF. It explains which Mazda3's will qualify for the service (by VIN, etc), and how to go about getting the service approved. I wound up printing it out, went to the local dealer and explained that I had the Mazda3 "Ghost Touch" issues going on and mentioned the warranty extension bulletin, and they made an appointment for me on the spot. It seems to have cleared things up perfectly after they changed out the screen!

We have a 2017 Mazda 3 and on our Display Assembly the Ribbon Cable that comes from the bottom of the Display is held in (locked in) the Gray PC Board Connector with a Black Rotating Locking Mechanism. If you just try to pull on the Ribbon Cable (as shown in this video) the Ribbon Cable is going to rip in half. To Un-lock the Ribbon Cable from the Gray PC Board Connector, lift up on the part of of the Black Plastic Locking Mechanism that faces the bottom of the Display Assembly and that will let you be able to pull the Orange Ribbon Cable out from the Gray PC Board Connector. I didn't realize the Black Plastic piece rotated up off the top of the Ribbon Cable until I took the whole thing apart to get a better look at it. Maybe someone could take a photo of one of these newer types and post it.

In my case the Mazda tweaks has been installed and touch screen use not limited to stationary.
It was sold back in 2018 (2014 model) as having android auto installed which the car yard couldn't verify as they had an iPhone. Turns out it was the unofficial tweaks one!
This new feature is a welcome addition 😢

I sent an email to Mazda USA about this failure on my wife's '15. I got a reply that Mazda extended the warranty on the display to 7 years? I don't recall getting a notification, but it wouldn't have mattered since her's just failed ('23). If you have a newer Mazda with a touch screen problem you may want to check if this extension applies.

Thanks for the instructions, really helped visualize the procedure, took me about half hour. Separating that cable with the back cover still on is a bit ambitious, mine was firmly enough in place that I had to go a step further, taking out 4 more screws to take that cover off. Easy enough.
