Mazda 3 2014 Touchscreen Display Issue - Simple fix

  • There is a known issue with the Dashboard Display on Mazda 3 models from 2014 onwards. Due to a manufacturing error the touchscreen can become unreliable and sends ghost touches to the CMU causing the display to jump around like crazy. Unfortunately although Mazda know about the problem they will not fix it free if the car is out of warranty.
I was quoted in excess of £750 to supply and fit a replacement unit when my own display became unusable.
I managed to procure and self fit a working replacement unit via ebay from a scrap dealer and fitting it myself cost just £165.
A simpler and free fix is demonstrated in this video. Basically you totally disable the touch screen functionality by disconnecting the ribbon from the touch screen to the printed circuit board behind it. This means you can no longer control the display by the touch screen but full functionality is retained through the control knob mounted on the centre console next to the handbrake. In practice this is not a big deal as the touch screen is in any case automatically disabled when the car is moving for safety reasons. In practice all you lose is the touch screen functionality when the car is at a standstill.

Great video. This helped me fix the ghost touch issue on my infotainment system. It was changing my radio station at every intersection.
For my car though, the ribbon cable had a white latch that you can pull loose with your finger nail so that the ribbon cable can just slide out without using pliers. I would suggest other people who are attempting this fix to check to see if they can loosen the white latch on the circuit board before using pliers.

Super easy. Barely an inconvenience! Thanks for posting this. I had worked the infotainment system last year to install the Android Auto/Apple Carplay upgrade, so this was a piece of cake. The only new part was taking the screen off of the computer. The whole job took maybe a half hour and only required a 10mm socket, a Philips head, and a pair of pliers.
The reach to get to the screen was so awkward that I don't know how anybody could miss having the functionality. Hard to believe how much of nuisance the touch screen was causing. Phantom presses, phantom phone calls, intermittent responsiveness problems with the command knob, the steering wheel controls, and voice commands. Never cause a problem with the volume controls... maybe because there's no touch screen commands for volume.

So glad I was able to help. The manic touch screen actually makes the whole car unusable. Truly awful that mazda themselves don't seem able to communicate to their dealers about it. The service department ignorance is breathtaking.

SeanHB, just a question... I am curious to know if you can use Android Auto without a working touch screen? Can you use the controller knob for full Android Auto functionality?

    • @michaelrowse4217
      @michaelrowse4217 ปีที่แล้ว

@@RJE48 Hey Robert, if you are still looking for an answer to this question, it's yes. By default, the Mazda Android Auto doesn't use the touchscreen (I believe Apple Carplay does), so you have to use the "joystick" to use AA even if you have a fully functioning touchscreen.

Thanks for the help. I pulled out the ribbon and snapped the plastic connecting the ribbon, but I guess it doesn't matter as I don't want to use the ribbon any more so haha. I suggest if anyone else is doing this to take out the ribbon exactly how you did it and not how I chose to do it. I tried to squeeze it to pull it out as opposed to pinching it out as it didn't feel right to me pinching it out. Turns out I was wrong. Ultimately, problem solved so thanks.

    Hi Patrick.
There are other you tube videos which show this.
First, open the glove box and gently prise off the trim that runs across the dashboard, starting with the lip under the edge of the glove box. There are just plastic lugs holding it. Prise them carefully one at a time. I used a flat head screwdriver to release the first one. Then disconnect the lead which is at the back of the trim behind the hazard warning light button. Then use a socket wrench 10mm to unscrew the fixing bolt under the infotainment unit. The unit will then slide forward and you can disconnect the two leads shown in my video. This all takes less than 5 minutes. The trim may seem a bit stiff to start with but once you've eased off the first lug near the glove box the rest comes off fairly easily. I'm no mechanic but it is straightforward. I got a friend to hold the trim while I undid the connecting lead, but this was not essential. (I sat in the passenger seat to do this)

I just finished fixing the ghost touch issue in my 2017 Mazda 6 Touring, this post (and the link below on how to remove the trim) were significantly helpful. However, once I had the infotainment screen completely removed from my car, I was unable to completely pry off the back cover to access the circuitry (might be specific to 2017 Mazda 6), so instead I just pulled the back cover as far as I could and then tore off the copper ribbon with some pliers (everything else in the screen and car still works perfectly fine).
I was paranoid about removing the trim and accidentally breaking it, but I later realized that it wasn’t hard at all (used a metal putty knife and just started at the ends and worked my way up carefully, just gotta take that first leap of faith and give it a try). The hardest part of the process was the 10mm bolt (removing it was difficult, but putting it back in was the single most difficult step of the entire process). This video (and the link below) both saved me from spending over $1000 to replace with a new infotainment system.

Thanks so much, was reading in a forum to disconnect the ribbon cable but they never specified which of the three.thanks for clarifying.
I had my vehicle parked for 6 months and when I restarted it it started going crazy just randomly pressing buttons I assumed it was frozen from winter but still acting up in plus 30 weather.
Seen many people say it's the knob I can tell you it's not the knob because if you disconnect the knob it still goes crazy and presses things randomly.

You can't use the touch screen while you are moving anyway, so retaining the display but disabling the faulty touch function is no great change in everyday use.

Advice to ANYONE working on the interior of any car ... get a trim panel removal set - essentially little plastic crowbars of various sizes and shapes ... it makes removing the trim and panels MUCH easier. This process total took me like an hour, and I was taking my sweet time, being very careful, and multitasking. This is very easy.
