In this episode, some puppies are transferred to Nashville to find their forever homes, the farrier stops by to trim some horses and check up on Mirri's hoof, and Keith is needed for some serious tractor maintenance. Get ready for all this and more!

Julia: you could very well die from blood clots especially in the lungs! They could break off and travel into the heart and then you could die. It is a miracle that Keith is doing as well as he is considering the amount of clotting he had going on! Praise God!

@@juliamclane8319 how do you know that? The blood clots can dislodge and travel to his heart causing a heart attack or go to his brain and cause an annerisom which is also life threatening.
@@francineherron1940 The blood clots travelled through the heart to get to the lungs and once in the lungs they cannot return. Blood clots do not cause aneurysms - please do not share incorrect information because these conditions are scary enough without misinformation. FYI I have suffered Pulmonary Embolism twice so I do know the possibilities

I have no experience with horses (I just love them), but as soon as I saw the lady facing Chilli in the pen face on and going closer, I knew it wasn't the right thing to do.
That adopter drove me nuts, she didn’t show any interest or respect in what Kimberly was saying to her, and she gave that mule no release.
As someone who has worked with a lot of wild horses and donkies, the way that lady was approaching the mule was completely wrong. She didn’t give him his space to approach her and think about the situation, instead she crowded him and put him into the position to kick or bite. The way Kory worked with him afterwards was a breath of fresh air. Good on you for stopping that before it got out of hand
Agreed! Kory is an expert with horse/mule training! Don't know if she was but that could have gone really south in a flash!
Not to mention if something would have happened, the mule would have had a label on him.

@@meycoe It's vital that a horse ends on a good note, even if it's with another trainer. A bad note can set you back months to years.
And as someone else noted, the lady was trying to take a shortcut to connection by pushing carrots on him. He took the first one she offered and spit it out, then she's shoving more at his face while chasing him around the pen. Her timing was rushed and pushy; she crowded him and put him and herself in an extremely unsafe situation. Kimberly handled that situation really well, she is a consummate professional.
I love having Elijah as the farrier for the horses. He's so good and understanding of them being stressed and or abused.
And he does a really good job of explaining what he's doing in a way that anyone can understand. I love that.
@@sallywaites8517 Agreed because most people would not be aware of all things needing to be done when first owning a horse and calling a farrier.
Back in the day, farrier care was not like it is today! I am glad it is and I really like Elijah! He sure knows what he is doing and works well with Dr. Nancy!
Kimberly- you rock! I love how you know the horses so well and love them even if they are brats! I think you need to take that donkey home! Rebekah and Angela, you are so completely dependable and honest! Elijah and Dr. Nancy are working together so beautifully.

I have clotting abmornalities and I know how scary that is. You are very lucky Keith, any one of those could have done you in. So happy this turned out well and you are back caring for the horses.

You handled that situation with Chilli so well. Kimberly was quick to cut the appointment when it got dangerous and Korrey did a great job explaining why she was rejected and how he dealt with Chilli. I'm very impressed at how professional that was.

I know I've asked before and seen others ask. So happy Keith is doing well, but has Kimberly had cancer or does she always wear the caps like this one? Just asking since we are all concerned about health of all workers at horse plus.

Thank you Kory for doing this follow up as to why that lady was not allowed to adopt the mule. She was pushing him to hard to let her touch him and she did not listen when Kimberly told her to step away. You have to understand that the staff know the animals better than you since they are around them on a daily basis and not just a few minutes like it is when going to adopt. If they tell you to back off, do it immediately! There is a reason that you may not be aware of.

Tbh I didn’t see a lot of warning signs that would reflect an immanent risk, but she was a bit creepy and rude.
Perhaps you edited out the most conclusive proof of the premise though I don’t think you probably should have, since that’s the position you based your responses on. 🧐😠
She’s using the treats to try and quickly establish a good looking rapport with this very green unhandled critter, and then adding a level of pressure once inside the pen.
These I see, especially in context of your overall messaging around this segment, as the more substantive concerns, but they are not as easy to describe or rely on. And she probably knows that.
She’s not necessarily deluded or not entirely wrong when she says she isn’t in any danger near the end of the segment, the mule is uncomfortable with her pressure or her vibes but mainly seeking to avoid her, so you do want to limit his exposure to that and good for you Kimberly to shut her down.
But, and she probably had to sign a waiver before being taken to any horse handling zones.
So atwhat point who gets to assess an equine adoption candidate -and how -is pretty much a grey area. Yes, if she gets kicked, bitten or farted on it would be a hassle at least to deal with, , not to m notion a black mark on this mule’s hr file, but usually you aren’t showing us folks at home segments with green broke horses where people go barging in on a horse that isn’t even haltered, and has a horses sense that “this person is intruding on my assigned containment area.
So there’s more going on here then meets the eye.
I’m just wondering why you are pull even advance an application to this stage without having checked out her bona fides a bit more. Since I hear you have a relatively high bar to qualify as an adopter.
But the main thing is you didn’t let her control the outcome and she did not get that mule off the lot and under her control.

Horse Plus has their own policy for adopting out animals, and have been very successful in honoring it. Occasionally
“ a Know it all “ shows up, and has to be dealt within the guidelines of that policy. Enjoy your day.

If Horse Plus doesn't like that, or the way the interaction is going, that's fine. But spare us the insults to her and the condescending lecture. Both of them are unnecessary, and a step too far. I am at awe of how organized and involved all of the staff are in the care of these beautiful animals. When you have a turn over of staff that in of itself can be very stressful. You guys are rocking the Horse Plus Vision

Poor Chili looked so uncomfortable when that woman was really pushing to try and get in his space. Can't believe she had the nerve to ignore Kimberly!
I really enjoyed watching Kory show us the the correct way to work with an Mule that hasn't had too much in the way of handling!

I had a large blood clot in my left leg a few years ago...NOT FUN. They didn't do surgery but I was in hospital for a few then had to endure shots in my belly twice a day for a week or so. VERY painful shots that left my tummy all black and blue. I'm glad your doing so well Keith.
And we are sorry you had to experience all that you did to get rid of the blood clots that you had.
I had no idea it was so detailed.

I'm pretty sure it was Chili who was about to teach the lesson. If she keeps ignoring equine behavior and acting like the Horse Whisperer, she'd going to learn it the hard way at some point.

K probably would have canceled that appt if she had a minute to really look at her paperwork after the farrier visit she witnessed. Or maybe it was the lady just not listening to Kimberly even before getting in the same space with the mule... that's tough too.
Was nice of Kory to explain to us and do another quick training session....they will get him handled it will just take time.. or a shelter transfer...that could happen. Angela is a great diffuser for sure, her own respect of staying behind a fence at all times really goes a long way for her interaction with a customer like this, when safety is a concern. Would like to see how Kory handles adoptions again, like to see him with both ppl and the horses. Busy training, I know.

When the Lady was trying to go up to the mule and ignored Kimberly by saying “you ain’t that wild,” my heart started going into fear mode I can tell that wasn’t right. Even though I never worked much with horses aside from going to a barn for a couple of years for lessons on lesson horses. (So I only know general horse manners and what I have learned from your channel.) but I could tell right away that was a no-no.
I have more experience with cats and dogs, is someone says a cat is extremely wild/feral. You treat that cat with the respect as if it were a fully mobile table saw that can target lock onto you that will hurt you without a second thought. So if someone says an equine is extremely wild, that is more like a tractor combine that is ready to attack that can and will hurt you or even kill you if its displeased with your presences or actions.
This was such a great episode. Kodu's to the tech team first as they just keep getting better and better. Keith is a walking miracle in my mind plus he fixes things ! Angela is so level headed and patient, love her. Kimberly is so close to the animals, hard to find someone so talented. Kory as usual was right on the spot to show us what went wrong with that potential adoption and how to work with an untamed mule. So happy to see the puppies transferred out, they will have much better chance at place where people normally come for pups. I could go on and on and on. LOL

The lady looking at the mule made me so nervous 😬. Can you imagine having the audacity to walk up to an animal that has clearly just been described as "very wild" by someone who has regular contact with them and think you know better - you, a stranger off the street who's never even set eyes on that animal in real life before? All she could think to say was "Oh you're not that wild" I knew right then that she didn't have anywhere near the experience with horses/mules she may have thought she had. If she had any idea what she was doing she'd have realized that she had that mule on edge trying to corner it like that and was moments away from getting knocked into next week...then to top it off she had the audacity to say "I'm almost done" when being called away from him multiple times for her own safety. Ma'am, you're done when they say you're done,you're not in charge on someone else's property and with an animal that's not yours. Oh my.🤦🏽♀
Yeah, the way she was totally ignoring Kimberly when she was saying how unhandled he was and had to be sedated for the farrier. You could tell Kimberly was getting frustrated trying to get her message across multiple times. That lady was so condescending.

29:15 I was a little surprised Kimberly turned her back on that lady for even a second! She had walked over and made the woman disengage, I thought she would keep her in sights until back in the office even. I guess Kimberly released the pressure on her to get her corralled through the gate...not sure our good horse methods work on ppl...she was maybe needing some pressure all the way out the property gate.
Of course disrespecting the staff from the get go is no way to get the adoption to proceed. Probably had more of a chance of getting the mule if she said little to nothing and stayed behind the fence. Of course things work out for a reason...clearly not a good fit.
What a nice team! Y’all seem to have a great dynamic supporting each other. Things seem so much calmer than the previous unhappiness with the vet techs on board.

The other vet's was temporary until a full-time one could be found.

I think we should give Angela a break. Her husband has gone from excruciating pain to near death in the last month. She made a mistake on the order. We all make mistakes, particularly when someone we love has been or is in danger. I know Jason and Tawnee were 'smiling' but I also felt like you were both pretty annoyed and making it clear to Angela that you were annoyed. She does not deserve that, especially not right now when she needs our support.And Keith, thank God you are ok. Horse Plus needs you so much. I think of you as the glue, or pin, or hydraulic fluid that keeps the rescue working.

Please, please make Keith take it easy. Blood clots are nothing to be messed with and can be deadly. My husband had them in his legs so bad he was sown for 2 weeks, could only get up for the necessities . Great work Horse Plus. Take care Keith.

Hi, HPHS. Just wanted to say that I had to come back and watch this episode again. I’ve done that with intake/assessments episodes and a few others but this one was for different and I thought I’d share that with you especially since you do get questions about some of your staff changes. Whether it’s the arrival of Spring, Keith’s quick recovery or some unseen force, the competence, joy and community is palpable. Kimberly has a gift in communicating with both the horses and the audience, Kory is so patient in going over the training details and everyone seems to be doing so much, so happily. Dr Nancy, the farrier, Angela, John, Rebekah and the whole crew seem so at ease and approachable while being Uber productive. Thanks, Tawnee and Jason, for sharing your passion snd your amazing daily operations. Great to see your smiles.
Kudos to you for not letting just anyone adopt! Wild mules, like wild mustangs need an expert who knows how to deal with them. She may have been around a lot of mules, but this guy could have really hurt her!
Any rider above a stark beginner knows if a horse/donkey/mule has his hind end towards you, it’s not time to approach them or try to put pressure on a horse.
Hell, most people who don’t know don’t go towards the end that kicks.

That mule situation was familiar, someone who has worked with broken horses/mules thinks they are ready to handle an unbroken one without any training in training an unbroken animal. I have worked with untrained horses supervised by a trainer....but still wouldn't buy an unbroken horse and train it on my own with such an backstory like this mule. Thanks Kory for showing the differences side by side. To train an animal you have to give them space to figure it out and not pressure them when they don't do it right from the start.
Same hay issues here in mid-central GA near Columbus. I have horses and also work at the local feed/hardware store. Our hay supplier is doing the same thing.....taking his big bales and making small bales so we have them for our customers. I reserved my hay for the winter. Its going to be close until 1st cutting this season. Head up friends.

Oh, and by the way, was anyone able to figure out what spooked the mares the night of the auction? Something was moving around in the dark that scared them. My guess was some minis got loose in the lane, because I heard mini whinnies and squeals. But then the iPhone died. 🐎
I was glad to see the mentions of difficulties from last year's drought causing this year's hay shortages. I hope new shipments of clean chopped timothy for the girls will mollify the people who are upset that they're on pelleted alfalfa instead of fescue-infested hay or pasture. I've started copy/pasting the explanation about fescue endophytes, I've explained it so often. I can't link the U of Kentucky's page about it in Live chat on the stream.
Thank God Keith is ok. I have two friends who are also dealing with blood clots, loss of taste/smell & brain fog, etc, from long covid. It's such a horrible virus and we're still finding out the after-effects of having it. I'm glad Keith is taking it easy when he needs to but I bet it's really frustrating. Get well Keith! That's the most important thing. ❤🩹
Poor Jason, back and forth. Man, that lady who overestimated her ability with mules. Yikes! So glad Kimberly stopped it. I'm sure she's upset, but Horse Plus has to be responsible. She was pressing Chilli too much, and unaware of the danger.

Where I live in Ontario, Canada, I know a guy who drives semis down to the States with hey used to go once a month now he's going every week with Hey down to States but he said he maybe has to go down two or three times a week the drop off hey to states

So glad Kieth survived that. That is an amazingly sweet donkey. Like maybe the most friendly I've seen on this channel. As for Chili, that lady was clueless about reading equine behavior. I only know what I've learned watching this and a few other channels, and even I could tell Chili was not at all happy with what she was doing just by his ears and behavior. She's lucky she didn't get kicked. I don't know if she was under the impression they can't kick forward or what, but much more of what she was doing and she might have found out otherwise. By contrast,when Kory was in with him. Chili was curious and did approach several times by choice ears forward.

Donkeys and mules can kick lightning fast with deadly accuracy. That woman's overconfidence combined with lack of knowledge could get her into real danger, I hope she found the correction humbling and instructive and never attempts such foolishness ever again. She needs much more training and experience, I pray she doesn't attempt such a thing again with someone less experienced and lacking good boundaries. That could be disastrous.

Yes another fan from Germany here! :-) I am so glad Keith is doing ok so far! This could have gone very differently. It´s so good to see him walking around! The situation with Chilli´s adoption shows exactly that you are a very experienced and safe rescue! This could have ended really badly if Chilli would have gotten adopted. Kory really looked like dancing with Chilli. And that´s something you have to definitely have a higher level of experience and education with horsemanship. The hay shortage is something really challenging for sure! I am glad you get hay delivered.

Ugh. Would like to see more about the actual horses up for adoptions and highlights about them. We all go through watching the rescue and then never get to see the horses again unless they are put down or have a surgery like castration. Please get an apprentice for Keith. He needs a back-up just in case because he is so essential. The man can’t even take a day off because of medical issues, he’s working himself to death, then he gets a call because the place can’t function w/out him. Not tryna be negative just honest.

The "thing" is disconnected from the other "thing," with the hand gestures, makes more sense to me then the actual description would.
My horse had terrible feet i mean terrible chips and just turned up at the front walking on his heel funny and bits of his hoof wall hanging off and my vet told me to get some biotin he said it is the best thing to help his hoof wall to grow in more healthy and to us turpentine oil on the outside of the hoof wall he said it would help strengthen the outer wall of his hoof so i did and within a few months about six i think he had perfect hooves all of them it was like night and day the difference it may help her hoof grow in better. Give it a try what do you have to loose?
The lady checking on the mule was very rude. She is also going to learn the hard way, with possibly a kick in the head, if she fails to listen to the warnings about her safety. I'm glad she was turned away because that's better than hearing later she was injured by the mule. As Rick Gore often points out , the mule will be blamed for the humans folly. I'm glad Kieth is back to his sunshine 🌞 self. What a tremendous blessing we didn't lose him. I'm so glad Dr Nancy won the drawing. I'd love to meet her. She is the best! 🐴🐎🦄💝💞❣
Actually she looked like she knew what she was doing. Yes she should have listened to Kimberly, but she was trying to assess a completely untrained animal, and if she was focused on the animal, she may not have heard everyhing Kimberly was saying. The potentially dangrous animal is right wher her focus should have been.
Any animal that doesn't know you do you keep pressing. You let them come to you. Give time between actions. Let animal adjust to what you just did.
Wow, I knew something happened to Keith from another video I watched, but I didn't know what it was, I just knew it sounded serious. My gosh you are one lucky man!!!!! There must have been an Angel looking out for you. So glad the outcome was good.

How is money generated for horse plus? Is there any money that is made by the facility itself? I don’t mean the donations by the general public.

Keith please pace yourself so you recover fully. It can be a long road of feeling better and overdoing it before you learn your new normal. Hugs to Angela because this can be even more scary for those who care about us.

CHILI IS A SMALLER VERSION OF MY RESCUE JACK RUSSELL. ALTHOUGH, FAXXON CANNOT KICK ME, HE DELIVERED SOME VERY NASTY BITES AT FIRST. WE WORKED TOGETHER, NOW HE NO LONGER BITES! FAXXON IS LEARNING ABOUT "GENTLE" AND "EASY" TWO VERY, VERY IMPORTANT FOR ANY ANIMAL TO UNDERSTAND AND BE COMFORTABLE WITH.
I live in Ontario, Canada. I have adopted horses I have 5 before I just adopted three more and they're like a year old and we're looking at another one more adopts and I think she's pregnant and they're at my boyfriend's parent's farm because they have my horse is a milking cows and they have two barns one for the milking cows and the other one big huge barn confit like 30 horses.
I'm old enough to remember buying hay for $1/bale and now $8-$12 isn't unusual and we don't have a hay shortage. You can get all the straight alfalfa you want at $5/bale usually, but for the last several years we're only getting 1 cutting of grass or grass mix hay.

Another great video! I always look forward to them. It's so interesting to see what a day at HPHS is all about... jam packed full! So thankful Keith knew something wasn't right and got checked out! His knowledge and abilities are so valuable. Angela scored a gem right there! And so did HPHS. The crocheted animals that your employee makes are so cute! I bet you could sell them in your store.
