The best thing to do when you see this reaction is do something totally different with them straight away. It’s the same as doing something with a toddler child change the situation and you don’t have a temper tantrum, stay on that line and you teach them how to learn what resentment is. 😊

Haltering can be pretty frustrating that's for sure. Some horses seem to have a sense that the halter will control them, and they don't want anything to do with it. I remember a young colt I bought, he wasn't a wild horse, but he hadn't been handled and was quite big. It didn't take long to be able to approach, pat, move around him and even pick up his feet. He's put his nose in the halter, but if it went around his neck or ears, he'd just take off backwards. Eventually I had to modify the halter with a velcro fastener so I didn't have to tie or buckle it. Once he dipped his nose in, I could really quickly velcro it. He ran off as usual but the halter went with him so he had to deal with it. And once he realized the process wouldn't kill him he was fine with it
So exciting and encouraging to see a horse accept a human and begin to trust them. Looking forward to seeing the Mustang Competition! Keep up the great work!! Truly patience is a virtue, but a worthy one with beautiful mustangs! :)

She is really a nice looking mare. She is very cautious but looks reasonably intelligent. She doesn’t give in easily but that could be a good quality down the road.

Loving the mustang training. Gorgeous mare who is brave but will take care of herself. Clever mare too. She would have been a great lead mare in the wild. Funny how she was reluctant to go back in the pen where all the work happens 😅. So glad she has you because I think she would turn aggressive if she was pushed too hard or was really frightened by something.
I agree. The scar looks stapled or stitched. My mare had a biopsy done in a different location on the hindquarter, and at least from a distance, the stapling she got healed similar to your mare.
SHE has fur like Christmas frost in the morning, SHE IS gentle and cooperative, only SHE doesn't quite understand her role yet. But your manner and calm voice inspire confidence! you will get there Ryan and you know it ; )
Totally want to see more on this mustang. I don’t want to join Patreon because I don’t own a horse anymore at this time in my life. I see no reason to pay for training advice I’m never going to put to use. I just love watching.
When I first saw that scar on her hip my first thought was it looked like there were suture marks so I agree that the wound was ‘stitched’. Great job btw. I think this is going to be a really nice mare!! 👍🥰
She’s such a stunning and amazing horse! On one hand I’m sad she was captured rather than living her life free as she is supposed to be. On the other hand I’m happy for her that you are the one who got her. She’s a fantastic mustang!
While seeing free-roaming mustangs is a beautiful sight, are they really FREE? They have to battle the weather, at risk of being struck by lightning, there’s a constant threat of predators, they have to search for and sometimes go days without food and water. In some areas they have to dig through snow for one blade of forage, etc. The list goes on and on. Great video Ryan.

Going through the gate the first time - I think this one says, "I don't want to go through this gate because I might loose this human who is treating me so gently and lovingly. He's made me safe and I don't want to loose him". Well done Ryan - W.E.L.L. Done!
Ryan , i hope you see my comment . I think this horse may benefit from a chiropractor visit once completely gentled , her split mane tells me she isnt in alignment and a adjustment could potentially help the riding stage be easier ! My rescue horse was a mean bucking bronco when I first tried to ride him a d he had split mane I had the chiropractor adjust him and he was a different horse after and it completely reversed his split mane !
I've worked with dogs,cats and now horses and when you pet a dog 1st time start under neath, work your way to the top of the head, having your hand on top they think you'll hit them so start underneath then work your way up . 😀

Hello Ryan, I enjoy watching what you are doing with this mustang mare all the way down under in New Zealand. I grew up on a dairy farm and my father breed pure breed milking cows. Each year we showed our cattle at livestock shows which I loved doing with my father. I was always interested in owning a horse but it was not possible. I have watched your first 3 videos on u tube and have you released anymore? Your content has been very enjoyable to watch. Thank you.
Everyone got an opinion on doin this or that when you are tarining an untrained horse, I think it's so amazing how quick horses adapt to new things with some patience

That was definitely a sewn scar....that poor baby...I wonder what the heck happened to her for that long of cut, that poor baby!! She is simply gorgeous!!! I have to tell you Ryan, I ABSOLUTELY LOVE how you teach!! I am learning SO MUCH by watching your videos. I happened on yours just simply watching other trainers, and happily landed on you! I am wondering when you would start using a brush - - if she tolerates you touching her and looks like she likes rubbing on her neck - wouldn't a brush feel wonderful to most of them - since they cannot scratch or get that kind of feeling of hair being light moved ? I really like how she became more comfortable with you touching her face and how well she did at going through the gate. I think you should name her Dusty because she looks like she has a dusting of snow on her back.
I really love and can relate to the analogy of drawing from that rapport account! I live in Wisconsin. My horse hates trailer loading. I am so depleted and emotional trying to help her past this. I don't know what else to do. I'm wondering if you might be able to help. I believe I have tried every positive approach. I have enlisted every horse friend and youtube video I can find. I am very committed to my mare. I refuse to give up on her. If this is something you might consider helping with suggestions or a personal visit, it would be very valuable to us. I watch every new video you have and appreciate your thoughtful approach.

The videos are a hit no matter what, so if you decide to be a little more patient with her than a human-driven competition, you still have mad respect from the horse community. Probably more. She's an excellent horse, and she won't know if you win or lose.
She is really special. Definitely scored. And you found her scratchy spot. Major deposit in the trust account . The scar does look stitched up but she acts like she's never had any focus on it. Or maybe she understood it was helping her to zip it up. Shes that smart.
Many Mustangs have better conformation than registered horses do. Look at faults that have been carelessly bred into breeds due to fads and selective breeding: HYPP and tiny hooves on big, beefy quarter horses, gaited horses that trip, stifle issues, moonblindness in thoroughbreds, immune deficiency in Arab foals, etc. Mustangs don't pass on nonfunctional genes.
Of course, you are obviously doing very well with her. So I am not saying this in a critical way, but in a way that I have found works pretty well for me. The quicker you can get to a more firm rub, scratching on the horse. The quicker most start to crave this. We tend to feel like a light touch is the way to go, but what I have found to be fact with what I have worked with is that they do prefer a good solid rub or scratch. Of course, not a pat. But instead, a firm rub like their mama did with her tongue when they were born.
I've seen quite a few scars like this mares, in videos posted by Alberta Wildies. They have trail cameras set up all over the place, and have shared videos of bears chasing the mustangs. The scars that look like your mares, are usually from bears in their area. Bears like to catch and eat foals, and occasionally the mares get injured, when they are down foaling. Or the youngsters get jumped on, if they are not as fast as the others, when a bear is chasing them. I'm amazed at just how fast and aggressive the bears are. Somehow they can swipe their front paws up and inward, while they are chasing the mustangs. Alberta Wildies shared a stallion with his rear end laid wide open, and amazingly he healed. His scar is very similar to this mares. That's what makes me wonder about a bear getting ahold of her. Or maybe a cougar. I've seen some pretty terrible injuries on rear ends, backs, and flanks, from cougars, here in Michigan.
I was thinking that that was probably were all those scars on her rump and back came from too; close encounters with cougars and bears. It's a perilous life out in the wild for horses. I follow the Alberta Wildies channel too and I've yet to see a foal in the wild survive yet. The only BC Wildies foals that have made it are the ones that needed rescuing, left behind by the band or injured and stranded.
Following from NZ and owner of 3 once wild horses. Loving how you are keeping it ‘real’ and are flexible with your training. You mention she is big for a Mustang. How many hands is she?

Look at faults that have been carelessly bred into breeds due to fads and selective breeding: HYPP and tiny hooves on big, beefy quarter horses, gaited horses that trip, stifle issues, moonblindness in thoroughbreds, immune deficiency in Arab foals, etc. Mustangs don't pass on nonfunctional genes.
Of course, you are obviously doing very well with her. So I am not saying this in a critical way, but in a way that I have found works pretty well for me. The quicker you can get to a more firm rub, scratching on the horse. The quicker most start to crave this. We tend to feel like a light touch is the way to go, but what I have found to be fact with what I have worked with is that they do prefer a good solid rub or scratch. Of course, not a pat. But instead, a firm rub like their mama did with her tongue when they were born.
I've seen quite a few scars like this mares, in videos posted by Alberta Wildies. They have trail cameras set up all over the place, and have shared videos of bears chasing the mustangs.
The scars that look like your mares, are usually from bears in their area. Bears like to catch and eat foals, and occasionally the mares get injured, when they are down foaling. Or the youngsters get jumped on, if they are not as fast as the others, when a bear is chasing them. I'm amazed at just how fast and aggressive the bears are. Somehow they can swipe their front paws up and inward, while they are chasing the mustangs.
Alberta Wildies shared a stallion with his rear end laid wide open, and amazingly he healed. His scar is very similar to this mares. That's what makes me wonder about a bear getting ahold of her. Or maybe a cougar. I've seen some pretty terrible injuries on rear ends, backs, and flanks, from cougars, here in Michigan.
I was thinking that that was probably were all those scars on her rump and back came from too; close encounters with cougars and bears. It's a perilous life out in the wild for horses. I follow the Alberta Wildies channel too and I've yet to see a foal in the wild survive yet. The only BC Wildies foals that have made it are the ones that needed rescuing, left behind by the band or injured and stranded.
