  • Growing the game of College football has done nothing but make it less enjoyable. The never ending fixation on the National Championship has hurt the sport and our perception tremendously. I am sick of monthly NIL donations and so is the rest of College football fans. Save us SAINT NICK #collegefootball

The comment is total ignorance. It was clear that Bama didn't have the money that the Texas schools had to buy a recruiting class. Bama has money, but not that old, oil money like them boosters in Texas have. But, guys kept coming to Bama just to play for Saban. Playing for the GOAT meant something to them. You saw how many left when he retired. If they're not making enough money to keep them at Bama now, they certainly weren't then. In fact, I remember him letting a couple guys leave last year because he wasn't about to give them the money that they wanted and they were starters. He's right about everything he's saying. Actually, he's been right every time he's ever spoken about the direction the game was headed in. The fact is that he was a workaholic. He outworked and outrecruited every coach in college football. I see the Saban jealousy can't even go away when he's retired.

These comments are dumb as hell. Saban's last 2 recruiting classes were ranked #1 and #2 in the nation. Bama has money, but I wouldn't say that their pockets are as deep as the Texas schools (for example). Did it matter? No. Recruits who could have gotten more money from another school still went to Bama just to play for Saban. Playing for the GOAT meant something to them. It was obvious. You saw how many sold out to the dollar and hightailed it when he retired. Recruiting was never going to be a problem for him. He outworked and outrecruited every coach in college football. Anytime this man had a concern, it was always the same. Remember when he asked, "Is this what we want college football to be?" Everybody went crazy saying he was scared, etc. What did he do though? He adapted in a way not many coaches could. He started doing the same things that had given him trouble up until that point, but he was doing it with better players than everyone else and still winning championships. Fact is he adapted to NIL. His recruiting didn't fall off even a little bit. But, he didn't like it and I understand why. The game is a joke now. You might as well say every player in college football is a free agent at all times. My interest is gone. I haven't cared about the NFL for years. Now, I don't care about college and I'm not alone. And to you fools saying it's a bad look for him because he has money, that's a stupid argument too. He's in his 70s, not his teens. He worked a long, damn time to accomplish all the things that he accomplished. There will never be another Saban and there will never be another run like he had at Bama. Instead of being appreciative that you witnessed it, you idiots just want to down him. But, none of you are worthy to even carry the man's briefcase. The Saban jealousy won't even go away now that he's retired. Just further proof of his greatness.

@@michaelbaker8633 Yes but he was losing as many players to the portal than he was recruiting. Even though he was (so far) keeping his quality recruits, it was getting harder to do so. He could see he was losing his advantage. He alluded to this to ESPN earlier, he said after the season 70% to 80% of his players wanted to know 2 things. 1) How much were they going play, 2) and how much they were going to be paid. That's inline with the answer he gave Sen Cruz as to why he retired (because his recruits only want to know how much he would pay them). They wouldn't be asking those 2 questions unless it was because they had some leverage. Other schools trying to attract them through the portal with either NIL money (via collectives) or the promise of more playing time.

NCAA not restricting the transfer portal to one 1 was the biggest issue that players took advantage of concerning NIL. Once they started letting players transfer 2&3 times on a whim. The COVID year was a bunch of crap too, they still should have limited players to playing a max 4 years, not playing in multiple games 6 years with a bunch of 24-26 year olds pissing off the incoming classes. NCAA has wrecked everything every chance they could have taken actual control.

That and the NCAA refused to even let a kid have a cheeseburger, or get a ride to a meeting or have a flight across the country for a recruiting visit. They refused to put any clear NIL rules out because they didn't even want them to have enough $ to take their family out to dinner when they came to watch them play. So the NCAA intentionally left NIL vague and confusing just so they could go and lord over programs and coaches they didn't like and ding them.
