I miss my big storage area like this since I moved.....but making sure that our retirement cabin has a big pantry like our old home. I always plant those potatoes that sprout. cut them in pieces and I would set them near the wood stove and let the white cut part turn black before planting.

Always inspirational and helpful Adaline! You know, the one thing I appreciate the most about your video's, is that you have shown exactly how to to purchase, store, and preserve food that you have sourced out. I live in the suburbs of a very large city. I have to work with whatever is local to me and for awhile I was under the assumption that canning and preservation was really only for gardeners and people who had their own fruit trees. I know now that couldn't be further from the truth, and I feel more confident approaching the canning process using store bought food .

I know my extension office has a "How to" guide on canning that can be downloaded for free. Also with the pressure canning, my mother would take her pressure canner to the extension office to have it tested to make sure it was working correctly.
I was lucky to have the University of Georgia's Agricultural Experiment Station located in my home town.

Great Pantry... My basement is much warmer ( our masonry heater is down there ) and it is finished. I have my items in cabinets, and of course the overflow on the downstairs kitchen counter. I am with you ... canning items for 2 years at a time. And oh yes, I have a sea of empty canning jars too.! It happens.

How neat to see a real cellar like that! We don’t really have cellars and true attics in Alaska homes. Some houses have crawl spaces but they are a real pain to store things in as they’re only about 3-4 feet-ish high.

use those potatoes to grow your own. Cut the potatoes making sure each piece has an eye and plant them. There are a TON of tutorials. We did ours last year using chicken wire fencing to make a tower and zipped tied it around a stake in the ground. Mixed equal parts of soil, manure, compost and peat moss. Then layered straw/hay, soil mix then potatoes around the edge and continued that till tower was full.

Excellent video! You always inspire me! Because of you, I now can and my family love it! I’ve learned so much from you! I started out doing water bath canning! Cranberry juice, Grape juice, tomato sauce and apple,e sauce! Even made three different sauces with habanero peppers! Family and friends loved it! One of the things I love about canning is that you control what is in it! Less sugar and preservatives. Question, is there a canner that can do half gallon jars? Or is the biggest just quart size? Much love Adaline! 👍🏼♥️👍🏼♥️👍🏼💐

    • @AdalineZook
      @AdalineZook  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

Half gallon jars are very difficult to do. I believe that you can water bath in them but maybe not pressure can? I don’t know, you may have to do some research.

Hi, I’m trying to find a source about canning pre-cooked turkey meat by water bath method. Can you please advise on what to add to the jar (vinegar? Salt?), do I put water, or should I make turkey broth first to put in it? How long? I don’t own a pressure canner. Help!

When you are pressure canning let the pressure come down naturally then take off the lid and let them sit for 10 minutes with the lid off then pull out your jars and let sit overnight. Siphoning happens when there is too much of a temperature change too fast. Hope this helps.😊

How long is the shelf life? Do you keep dates of when canned and use by dates? Also the freezers are do full. With three small girls wondering how much good you all consume? Great looking pepper cellar!!!

  • @gualganus

    Two suggestions:
    1) Sheets of heavy duty cardboard or 1/4" plywood can be placed atop the pint and cup jars to facilitate 'double-decking' the jars on the shelf. Living in Texas, we don't have the luxury of a basement. However, I store my canned goods in the bottom of the pantry, bottom of the hutch, bottom of spacious cabinets, and bottom of closets. 'Double-decking' them exponentially increases the storage space.
    2) I store my empty jars upside down. It makes them easier to clean, when the next canning season arrives, and keeps the dust and bugs out.
    One additional comment:
I find it highly entertaining, when canners indulge novitiates and the paranoid about removing canning rings. The rings are only necessary to keep the lids in place during the canning process. Anyone with sufficient knowledge and experience understands that the rings are superfluous and unnecessary for longterm storage.
Thank you for the update. I am always interested in how others update and re-evaluate their storage plans.
