The Imperial Knights, or Questor Imperialis in High Gothic, are piloted robotic combat walkers of medium size in the service of the Imperium and sometimes the Adeptus Mechanicus.
Each Knight is piloted by a single Human warrior drawn from an ancient feudal aristocratic culture that stretches across the galaxy.
However, a Knight is smaller and less capable in combat than even the smallest class of true Titan utilised by the Collegia Titanica, the Warhound-class Scout Titan. Knights normally deploy in squadrons comprised of several of these war machines.
These ancient battlesuits stand thirty to forty Terran feet (9 to 12 metres) tall, are protected by nearly impenetrable Ion Shields and armed with a devastating array of heavy weapons.
Imperial Knights are colossal war machines that tower over the battlefield. They are propelled into battle by powerful servos and have the power to kick over tanks and crush soldiers into red paste.

My favorite piece of lore from the 8th ed timeline.
    Lone Guardian
"Sir Yannil of House Derthos swears
an oath to stand guard over the beset
mining colonies on the moon of Tandosa.
Enthroned within Tower of Strength, his
Knight Castellan, Yannil sees off repeated
attacks by Drukhari pirates. Outraged at
the intervention by Yannil and his ironclad
behemoth, the leaders of the Drukhari
raiding parties send a force of swift
gunships and agile fighter-craft to eliminate
the impediment once and for all. Engaging
his airborne tormentors as best he can,
Yannil sends a missive to House Derthos
for aid, then digs in and vows to hold his
    ground until he is relieved.
It is a week later that Knights of House
Derthos reach Tandosa. They find Tower of
Strength still standing, ravaged by energy
blasts and explosives, its pilot clinging to
life by a thread. Around him are scattered
the wrecks of the Drukhari vessels,
    eliminated to the last."

But if we take a look at some of the insane machinery we in the real world have made for mining, logging, excavation, etc and then imagine these monsters dropped into the medieval age then you basically have a super weapon or mobile fortress.

An idea I had recently was basically the Imperial Knight equivalent to the Legion of the Damned (because if it's warp ghosts, why should the Space Marines have all the fun?). They'd be Knights and their pilots who were lost in the warp, and arrive when the situation is most dire. Human forces look up to see a giant burning robot with a skull for a faceplate, shooting literal hellfire at their enemies.
I'd call them House Goetia, with each robot being named for a different demon. The Stolas, the Belith, the Andrealphus. Three Armigers would be called the Cerebus Squad, named Right Head, Left Head, and Center Head. Paint stylized images of the relevant demon on their carapace, and their shields would be emblazoned with the demon's sigil.
None of this is Chaos, I must remind. It would just be rad as heck. Even when damned to hell, they continue to serve the Emperor.

The pilots never meet during the war but learn to respect each other for their honor, ability and courage. They finally meet at the victory party and fall in love. Houses want them to fight each other over some old grudge no one remembers, but they become freeblades instead because protecting the Imperium is more important than house squabbles.

Cool things I don't think Bricky touched on but I am so soy infused that I know way to much about this shit.
    >It's kinda implied that, during the ritual of becoming, the knight has to CHOOSE you and basically the type of knight you get is based on your personality. If you're a boisterous, combative, angry guy you get the gallant, if you're quiet and reserved you get the crusader, etc.
    >The Iron Warrior Obliterator virus works on Knights and that's how chaos knights are made.
    >Knights have machine spirits so strong they can basically act without a pilot. When Sir Hektur was captured by the Iron Warriors, his knight "Canis Rex" blew through like half the ship to save him.
    >Knights are named like boats used to be, things like "Fist of Iron"
    >Knights frequently swear Oaths, which they carry out to a tee. One time a Knight Castellan stood vigil over a planet for like 200 years and fought off a Drukhari raid all by himself.
    >The knight Preceptor is basically in charge of training new knights and watching after the Armigers, which are essentially squires.
    >Armigers don't go through the Ritual of Becoming because they don't have a Throne Mechanicum. They wear something called a Helm Dominatus, which allows them to control the knight but they can be overridden by their superiors and basically mind-controlled like Skitarii. I know the Questor Mechanicus does this alot, but I think the Questor Imperialis kinda doesn't as much?
    >The knight valiant is cool and you cannot convince me otherwise.
    >I think House Raven has the STC for one of their knights like the warden or something and someone's job is just to spam that mf like no tomorrow.
    >Freeblades are cool because they leave their house to go on a world tour for their own sake and sometimes they come back and their house takes them back because they did something dope.
    >The Obisidian Knight spends his free time fucking up Tau and is (maybe) a perpetual because his knight dies like twice but always comes back and a knight that is a perpetual with his suit is fucking dope.
    >The leader of a knight house is called the High King lol.
    >During the Damocles Crusade, a knight named Montagne fell off a cliff but the High King Tybalt used his thunderstrike gauntlet to catch him and pull him back up. He later said "You're supposed to save my life, Montagne, not the other way around!"
    >Also death grip is really funny because it's basically an extra attack so if there's like one guardsman in a squad left and you need the objective he's on you can like pick him up and chuck him into space with the little Smash Bros *wink* into the distance lol
    >the thundercoil harpoon is the only weapon in the tabletop with a native AP -6
god I love knights dude they're so cool.

      @cyanideinmycereal1077 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

The ion shields doesn’t cover the Knight in its entirety but can be moved around like a virtual shield to deflect shots. The ion shields main ability is to deflect attacks or slow down shots to lessen damage. The void shield on the other hand, covers the entire machine or structure and absorbs attacks. Titans and ships use void shields while Knights use ion shields.

Since they came up again, I wanted to mention my favourite theory about machine spirits
I read somewhere online that machine spirits might be the remnants of AI that the techpriests couldn't eliminate. The theory says that all technology had AI, and thought the Mechanicus tries they couldn't get rid of it all. So for smaller machines the AI is more basic and needs just a little bit of adoration to work, but for titans or other massive machine spirits theres a lot more AI left and they want more worship to work, so the AdMech praying and offering things and burning incense actually has a purpose.

Thought I'd share the description of a knight desecrator from the 8th ed chaos Knight codex
"Bow waves of horror and despair roll before the advance of the Knights Desecrator. With every ground-shaking footfall the enemy know that their doom draws closer, for these malefic war engines hunt their prey with a spite-fuelled efficiency that is monstrous to behold. No living thing is spared, no victim considered too mighty or too meagre to escape the notice of the Knights. With methodical ruthlessness they crack open every strongpoint, lay bare every scrap of cover and scour their enemies from the battlefield down to the last hapless victim.
Obsession is common amongst the servants of Chaos; amongst the Fallen Nobles who pilot Knights Desecrator it finds expression in a desire to relentlessly annihilate every trace of their enemies. For such murderous butchers it is not enough to simply defeat the foe. They must fell every opposing war engine, blasting and crushing their mechanical targets until nothing but smouldering scrap remains. They must level every fortification and trample its ruins to rubble, massacre every last warrior who stands against them or flees before their wrath, then tear down every temple, monument, dwelling and structure, every trace that their enemies ever existed. Only once their foes' holdings are reduced to blasted wastelands and their enemies lie piled in corpse-mountains high enough to blot out the stars do the Knights Desecrator know even a moment's satisfaction. Even then it is fleeting, for until the entire Imperium is reduced to ruin, these Fallen Nobles will know no peace.
Knights Desecrator possess potent mid-to close range armaments that lend themselves towards duelling enemy war engines or monstrous beasts, or tearing down the foe's fortifications. One limb typically ends in a taloned thunderstrike gauntlet that can be used to crush, pulverise and rake their enemies, or even to heft the crumpled wreckage of a battle tank and hurl it bouncing and rolling through the foe to lethal effect.
The Desecrator's other primary armament is the fearsome laser destructor. Boasting considerable range for a focused beam weapon, the laser destructor packs a tremendous punch. Each shot is preceded by a rising banshee wail as energy flickers about the weapon's muzzle, before it discharges with a crack like mountains splitting Where the laser destructor's actinic blast strikes home, armour vaporises and flesh sublimates to steam in a heartbeat. The weapon is capable of coring a foot-wide hole through solid adamantine from a thousand yards away, and the irregular overpulses that race down its beam can blast apart even the heaviest targets with sudden and unpredictable eruptions of energy.
Those Fallen Nobles who pilot Knights Desecrator are all cruel despots, well disposed to imposing their tyrannical will upon others. They often hold the metaphysical leashes of allied War Dogs. With their thralls' Helms Mechanicum slaved to their warped Thrones, the Fallen Nobles coordinate vicious flanking manoeuvres and volleys of enfilading fire from the War Dogs that drive their enemies from cover. So are even the best dug-in foes flushed out to be crushed beneath the Knights Desecrator's trampling feet or mowed down by their chattering point defence stubbers. After all, none can be permitted to survive the Chaos Knights' wrath; only death can remain in their wake."

Because it didn't really come up: The Armigers are the "young" Knights. They're basically squires. They train beside the bigger Knights and if you are a good enough Armiger pilot, you get the chance to pilot one of the bigger Knights. That's also the reason the Armigers often are kind of aggressive and overconfident, always willing to show their skill and courage so they get the bigger toys quicker.
This is represented pretty well in the new Knights Codex.

It should be noted that despite a chainsword working for logging knights during the dark age of technology would have been outfitted with dedicated logging equipment or dedicated mining equipment so they might have had something adjacent to a plasma. Lance, but it's not meant for melting armor. It's going to be meant for digging through rock and they will accompany that with some sort of arm or some sort of shovel and same thing with a logging ax. They would have a large basically a normal chainsaw and a large grabbing hand for moving logs around.
Also, on the topic of shielding a void shield shunts incoming kinetic energy into the warp, an ion shield tries to transfer that energy into light, so they're too slightly different mechanisms. The ion shield is going to generally be weaker and is not going to be able to absorb as much punishment before falling and it also may not be able to encompass as big of a area as a void shield

Of course I'll have to admit that this is bit of a moot point since Warlord is 5.5k points and who would take 800 point transport.

  • @pathfindersavant3988
    @pathfindersavant3988 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

"How do they pay for it?"
The considering how fascist the Imperium is even at the best of times, I'd imagine the economy is probably corporatist (or mercantalist or otherwise syndicalist) in nature, meaning so long as you make a request of the Administratum for stuff and they approve of it, you'll get that thing regardless of how many slaves, serfs, peasants, hivescum, or ecosystems need to die in order to get it.
This is also partly why the inequality between the classes on many worlds is so massive. Because if you're a corrupt noble who's practically enslaved the entire planetary population in the name of producing some kind of good or item the Imperium wants, and you have a corrupt administratum clerk in your pocket who can get you whatever you want, then you can live in complete unbridled opulance with little to no concern or opposition. Markets? Capitalism? Competition? That's for peasants and hivers who have to actually work for a living (and even then, depending on the way the planet is managed, that would only be a secondary economy since chances are everyone would just have their appointed rations and housing and that's it and would be shot by enforcers or arbites should they complain about it). Meanwhile if you're born into the nobility of the planetary elites or governorship with an aurumite spoon in your mouth, you don't have to worry about that stuff. You just ask for that stuff from your Administratum clerk while reminding him about the horrible things you'll do to him and/or his family should he fail to get you the 800 gem-crusted space-flamingo tongues that you plan to scarf down singlehandedly for next week's noble ball/feast/orgy to celebrate the inauguration of your 50th coliseum/execution ground/blood-orgy hall that you just had built because you got bored of the last 49 and decided to gift some of them to some lesser nobles that are in your favour because of the weird thing they did during the last orgy.
So no DK, I don't think the knight houses have to pay much for building and maintanance for the Knights, especailly since they'd be on the high priority waiting lists for most forge worlds.

I love Imperial Knights, specifically the Freeblades. Lorewise, sometimes several Freeblades can band together and form a temperary lance formation similar to a standard household but each knight is unique with different colors and heraldry instead of a uniform color scheme. Thus, I was a little disappointed when the Canis Rex wasn't mentioned because his back story of how it earned the name "unchained" is insane.
Anyways, day 26 of asking for a Space Wolves Lore Video!
