Don needs to write a series of books on his life and experiences.
He's like the wise elder of the late 70's and 80's hard rock scene. He'd have so much to share!
I completely agree 💯! He was there through the whole scene! 🤘🏻🎸🎵🎶🎼🎙️
It`s nice to see Dokken stand up for Mick Mars. He was the driving musical force behind MC.
Yes Mick was motley crue and Don has always been a badass to these brothers will always rock
100% Bob Daisley has also stuck up for Mick , and even said Nikki had told him in the 80's , he wanted to get rid of Mick on guitar . Something Nikki has lied about and denied . Jake E Lee confirmed this as well
Damn Right!!!
Absolutely the best!! Love Mick!! Don is right, he is one of the most under-rated guitar players! This was fantastic Stefan❤❤❤❤❤
Mick is awesome and one of my biggest influences on my playing but he’s hardly underrated or anything great as a player. What he did was perfect with Crüe and what he does he does great but he is a run of the mill blues pentatonic player, it’s all very simple guitar work, not underrated in the least.
Yep.
So true Mick rocks & Don is a killer vocal singer
Hi Debbie
Mick Mars is Motley Crue! Without him its a tribute band!
I am, in NO WAY, seeking to "flout"/"deny" what you say here, while that IS true, you, also, need to look at the "music world"/world of touring (modern day), more universally (and with the consideration of what has changed -TERRIBLY!!- and become "standard" for the industry and artists (from a variable, but generally definable) time-period).
A large number of the "bands" who still tour (and, because: "hard copy"/album and the sales no longer exist. Mechanicals have been disgustingly reduced. Even songwriting royalties are down and not only are the percentages possible to EARN, down; the OPPORTUNITIES (to make the music EARN from those, AT ALL!) are down.
...So: there IS NO steady, recurring income, really for artists (individually or collectively).
Because of cabals like "livenation"🙄🤦🖕🖕, ticket prices have, illegally, soared and merchandise sales (Shirts, caps & whatever else) have, also, gone through the roof AND: THE ARTISTS a) Cannot, legitimately, control the prices and
b) Receive a MUCH SMALLER percentage of the profits, at venues (as a punk band: you could sell a couple of $3-5 shirts or tapes at a show & make: gas money & maybe a few burgers or sandwiches, to get to the NEXT NIGHT, at a show (yes: the value of money, as well as prices, were "different" in the times I am talking about. That doesn't make a difference. The point is: IT WAS POSSIBLE!
NOW??: It no longer is (or: rarely! if ever!!)-)-)
...sorry, my "point," actually was: That:
A LARGE NUMBER of bands, still, out there, these days, ARE "SELF-COVER" artists!
They have replaced dead, retired or ostracized members with new members!
("The Stanley/Simmons 'Kiss" protocol," I guess:
' Plug in whoever. ' 🙄🙄).
Sure: it may not result in "a terrible show " ...but: it doesn't count as/can't be considered the original band.
- Even if EVERY PERSON CURRENTLY INVOLVED with it SAYS/CLAIMS that: "Yes. It is."
🙄🙄🤦 No. No, it ISN'T and never WILL or CAN be!
Quit LYING to yourself and (MUCH MORE OFFENSIVELY!!) to ME!
-All I was, really, explaining is that: MOST bands doing the summer tours (often: summer "bulk" tours), since -🤷🤷🤷 really, for the past 30-ish years (DEFINITELY: the last 15, or so!!): ALL of them are "cover band versions" of the bands whose names they tour under!
...and they will never call it that, or care!
-But as an audience member??: YOU *should* know (and accept) that! (...if you're planning to take part in such events)!
...a few bands from the '60s-'70s-'80s are, still, making viable new music and have reconstituted their line-ups (in a respectable, valid way) ...but: those are in the "rarity" column.
Maybe Don Dokken & Mick Mars can do an album together!
That would rock
@@inahaze76 yep, it would
I've always been a fan of Mick Mars since i was 10 years old when i discovered Motley Crue in 1983, I loved Vince and Mick right away, Mick was the dark one in the band for me and i loved it, i was diagnosed at 27 years old but i was in pain since i was 18 and i'm 50 now, to me Mick is a role model for what he did despite the AS, it's when i was diagnosed that i learned that Mick Mars had the same thing, a rockstar i could relate to and it inspired me. You guys have no idea how much it hurts at times, i was declared invalid officially 5 years ago, it's shitty to be in pain all the time and living in poverty, what helps me is that i'm a painting artist and put everything i have into my art to make it. It's all i have left.
Hey man, I know this comment is 7 months behind yours but I hope you're still crushing it with your art and are no longer in poverty. Sending you the best of wishes from the UK
I have suffered from a chronic back problem for the last 25 years and I cannot believe Mick even had a career with his condition. I know Nancy Sixx wrote the songs for them but for me Mick IS Motley Crue.
It must be the love of playing the music for mick to continue to play he definitely don't need the money
I have ankylosing spondylitis and HLA B27. Oddly enough I was suffering really bad and doctors did not know what was wrong with me some thought I was faking. I watched Mick Mars interview with Eddie Trunk and I ask my doctor to test me for HLA she called me up one day later and said how did you know and I told her you are not going to believe this. This ailment is so much worse then chronic back pain. It affects your stomach your spine pushes out against your rib cage. Mick probably my favorite Rock guitar player. At least the most underrated. Much love to Mick and all the other fans
@@randyd0514I heard that some people who go on full carnivore diets of nothing but red meat, salt, and of course water end up stopping the progression of that illness. Might be worth testing out for yourself.
Nancy wrote the frame but Mick did the bits
Nancy...lol...he acts like a Nancy would.
I wish Don would launch a podcast and tell all of his stories!! I love em!
You know I'm in my 60's and before all this drama for the umpteenth time in Motley Crue.....when I was a young headbanger, now I'm an old headbanger, I always said, thought that only talent in that band was Mick and Tommy and I am not a Crue fan but I will say that when Neil left and they enlisted John Corabi that is the line up that they should have stuck with instead of caving to the Neil fans. That album "Motley Crue" could have been a game changer and really showcased the real talent in that band..."Hooligans Holiday" is a great song
Thank you so much for this. I love Don so much- and have lived daily hating what Nikki has done to Mick after agreeing to a Farewell contract tour years ago. I met Mick back in 1997 and he truly was one of the kindest most truest music artists I have ever made contact with. Love you Mick Mars- and despite Motley Crue once being my favorite band ever In my life, I will never pay money for any tours or records they release with YOU. Period. #TEAM MICK FOREVER
I've always been a fan of Mick's wicked slide guitar playing. The way he alternates between slide guitar and lead guitar on "Smokin' In The Boys' Room" is one of the coolest lead guitar tracks I ever heard! Kudos to Don for sticking up for him and singing his praises.
I have a musician friend from France. I remember playing Motley Crue he never heard their music. The first thing he said was “that guitarist, that tone, it’s sharp”.
Mick defined the bands sound.
Thanks for the vid....I could listen to Don DOKKEN tell his his life stories/experiences ALL day through the night on to the next one....Kewl to hear his connection with Mars back when. Also, quite rare actually, that Don's brother shares that same gawdawful horrible disease of Mick as well.....ROCK the funk ON 🤘🔥🤘
Mick Mars is one of my favorite guitarist. He comes up with great riffs, and just seemed to be the force behind Motley Crue, the other three just battling for camera time. Couldn't agree more with Don. Dokken has always been my favorite band, and Mick Mars is my second favorite. 😉
Controversial? I think Mick is universally beloved!
1000% agree with Don.....AND..... us Metal fans from the 80s will still be playing Mick's riffs and solos way after we've forgotten many of the shred Maestros licks.... that is the same for Priest and Maiden.... Mick is up there with Glenn Tipton, KK Downing, Adrian Smith and Dave Murray.... and Blackmore and Iommi.... that's what I think anyway.
Mick is way under appreciated. He had great tone. One of the best guitar tones from the 80s
His tone was very unique. It was their trademark, not Neal's weak strained vocals. It started with that old beat-up strat of his, nothing fancy-assed with big time endorsement deals. He was the major noise maker in that band, and they would never gotten anywhere without him. I've always thought that Mick deserved a better band than what he got, especially now with all the current drama he's having with his former bandmates that he carried for years.
I saw Motley Crew 4 or 5 times. It was clear from the first song , I was watching the Mick Mars show.
Yep, saw Motley in 1982 and was blown away by Micks live tone, super clear and awesome distortion. There was what looked a rack 31 band eq boosting specific frequencies. I bought one and oh yeah, the door to tone was born.
Over the next few years all those great guitar tones were born, using eq, graphics and parametrics, to pre boost the front of the amp.
I'm not sure if Mick started that but he was the 1st player I saw with great live tone, prior to Metallica & Stryper who came afterwards using EQ, raising the bar for 80s tone.
soem really killer riffs. he was wasted in crue. wasp with mick mars would have been filthy.
I think he used hot rodded Marshalls and a Soldano ODS
I think it would be awesome if Don and Mick would do a record together!!!! Just for the love of music!!!!🥰💕😍💕🥰🤗🤗🤗🤗😋😋😊😊😊🙂🙂🙂 Just do an album!!!! Don't have to go on tour!!!! Maybe do a video and put on TH-cam!!!! Mick Mars is MOTLEY CRUE!!!!! That was his passion!!!! 🙏 His love!!!! 💕 And the Corporation called Motley Crue!!!! (It's not a ROCK band anymore) Screwed him!!!!😔😞😔😞😔😞😔😥😥😥😥
Got a huge picture of Mick in my living room...met him way back...was very nice to me and my friends...signed everything. Z
Don seems so down to earth. Said what I kinda felt... poor Mick and what a talented guy.
wow, I'd luv'd to hear more Mick stories from him.
Mick's terrific and always has been. Nikki has disgraced the Crue name, I'll just put it like that. Don Dokken is freaking awesome and those classic line-up Dokken records (and his solo record 'Up From The Ashes' from '90) are awesome. I saw Don on that '90-'91 solo tour here in Cleveland at The Agora and it was excellent.
Mick is the greatest! I was lucky enough to meet all of them Mick was the most down to Earth followed by Vince at the time I met them. Nikki and Tommy I just got the feeling they were feeding me bullshit to get through. I could tell Mick was in pain at the time as well as Vince as it was just after his daughter passed. You could also tell even though they just reformed there was still tension.
Dokken and Twisted Sister was my first metal concert. I totally loved Don's vocal.
Nancy sixx is as fake as a 3 dollar bill 😅 have I told you about that time I overdosed and they bought me back to life, wish I had a dollar for every time he's told that story
They are not metal bands they are hard rock bands...
Thanks for the interview Don Dokken and for saying that about Mick Mars. Great interview. ROCK ON Mick Mars.
I really appreciate Don and Mick both. My favorite singer and favorite guitar player of that era. Mick is Motley and Don is Dokken!
Thank you, Don! Very classy.
Great interview!
Absolutely adore Mr Mick Mars! TYVM for this great interview, Mr Dokken! 💋
Mick's got the riffs that kill...
Much respect to Mr Dokken our band HEAVYNESS remembers you!
I TOTALLY AGREE with Don about Mick Mars my love and prayers go out for Mick Mars🤘🤘🤘✌️🖤🤘🤘🤘
Just found your channel tonight. Started with the Don and C.C. talk. Diggin it man! Thanks for the great content,
Thank you ! I truly appreciate it.
Good upload, brother 🤘
Great stuff dude! Thank you for lettin Don just storytell and get this off his chest. Im really impressed with new Dokken stuff and his do or die vibe. Mick ROCKS and Im way let down with the other dudes in Motley for throwin him under the bus.
Never been here before. Nice interview. Heard stuff I've never heard before. Kinda rare. Keep up the good work.
Rocka Rolla is a great album. What is Don talking about!
I agree. It has its charms.
Really love listening to Don tell stories. I just wish he would invite me on tour to sing all his music for him, because at 53 I can still hit every note.😂 nothing but love for Don! And he is right, Mick is so underappreciated!
Don❤❤❤ Mick❤❤❤. Great interview!!! Thanks, Stefan..
Thank you Laurel! Glad you enjoyed it.
Mick is one of the Riff masters ,, Exels at writing cool riffs and hook pieces of songs ! The Man is Brilliant
Dokken is saying what i've always believed .. Nikki Sixx was NOT the musical song writer for Motley Crue , he wrote the lyrics to the songs . Their is no way that guy came up with all those riffs , from the early records . When so many people that knew him have said he didn't know basic chords , or hardly anything about music at the time . Theirs no way he could have the rhythm or even know how to apply them into what Mick was playing . Mick was the musical engine of Motley Crue
Mick didnt even know what instrument he was stealing. That says it all.
@@danielhoward8354 You mean Nikki Sixx not knowing the difference between the bass guitar , and guitar . Yes
I personally think that Rocka Rolla is a good album. It's no Sad Wings or the later stuff, but it's good bluesy hard rock.
Priest themselves were never high on Rocka Rolla, mainly because of the production, but it was a good album for it's time. I've always like it.
It's better and more original than anything Dokken has ever put out. Dokken is very generic in his songwriting and the rhythm guitar on his classics are most often just plain boring 8th note chugchug. He just makes himself a fool by crapping on Rocka Rolla. Rocka Rolla was just different and with a lot of mellow parts, but it was quite experimental music. The first track is in 5/4 - has Dokken ever done anything that isn't 4/4? Run of the mill is one of the greatest tracks JP ever did and there were other good ones too on it.
"That album is crap, don't buy it" -Don Dokken
No Don, it's just you who are limited in so many ways.
Love Don & Mick, great interview bud !
🙏 Thank’s for watching and hanging with us!
Thanks for being a genuine person beyond your music,
I was so happy to see Dokken play at the rockin Derby in scaittichoke NY over 5 years ago,
They were a last minute addition, what a pleasant surprise.
The venue had 2 main stages and a smaller one with over 60 bands playing over 4 days, a class c wrestling attraction and a wrecking derby car arena for entertainment, wicked cool 😎
Ive always said Motley Crue was Mick and Tommys sound , And we know that drummers play to guitars. Im sure Tommy had some beats and Mick helped bring those beats to life, No doubt Mick carried them for a long time
I thought they played to the bass guitar
Great love listening to dons interview and iam ahuge mick Mars fan great interview
That kind of back pain is suicidal pain, pure hell.
Its great to see such loyalty
Motley Ctue would not have happened without Mick Mars. Nikki is a great songwriter, Mick is 1 of THE GOATs in Rock Guitar history.
Don!..love u man. Your music is do great…i go back to mid-80’s till today LOVE U MAN!…thank you for sharing this as Crue is one of favs like Dokkon growing up…mick is amazing and underrated in my opinion too!
Well when Vince , Tommy , Nikki and J5 put out a new Motley record everyone will see it was Mick that was the artist behind the band ..
Plus, J5 looks like a nerd who finally got invited to the cool kids party, when he's on stage with Motley. Guitar all the way up to his damn nipples, moving like a guy who's never danced with a girl in his whole life. Even til the end, I loved Mick's whole stage presence/image with the band. I'm a Les Paul guy, but NOBODY made a Strat sound THAT damn mean in the history of rock n roll!
john 5 is an great guitar player and a great writer. he will play anything faithfully for the love of it. that said he will never bust out a mick mars riff in the studio. it could be great and crunchy and sick but its not going to be mick mars. hes gonna carry that band live with tommy lee but he isnt going to fill those shoes.
Rocka Rolla is fukg gold !
Yes, Don's way off on that one it's getting its deserved praise finally.
@@LarryFleetwood8675 it was my 1st classic priest after I bought Turbo when it was released...I chose it over all the others because I loved the(original) cover
Team Mick all the way!
It's sad how Mick has been treated after all he has given to the band even when you read the dirt you can see how he was treated and it's shit
Mick Mars is from Terre Haute, Indiana like myself. Mick Mars is the only member of Motley Crue that I admire and respect.
Definitely find me in the Mick Mars camp
I agree with Don Dokken 158,000 percent.
Mick Mars is among the greatest...
YEAH!!!!!!
☀️🐺🌙🐺🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🪓🎸🪓
Mick was underated for sure. Backbone of Motley . Thanks Mick for your awesome riffs. Jaming on your all i need tonight. Wild song listen to lyrics.
Love them both ! Can't imagine my life without their contributions !!!
Mick Mars is a great guy and a great musician. He didn't deserve to be treated like this. Don Dokken knows everything about everyone in the music world.
I remember meeting Don at Holiday Inn In Duluth Minnesota my hometown in 1985 when they were here the next night with Krokus. What a show, and Don was cool to all the kids who talked to him outside the hotel; Motley Crue was my favorite band at that time though and Mick Mars was a very underrated guitarist ! Love Mick and Dokken!
Fantastic & funny (hi)story when you met Mick before Crüe!! So cool Don! Long live Mick & Don! I love you both - true rock n rollers with heart =)
I love both Mick and don there both underrated as hell. Also fck Tommy hep C Lee, Nikki I'm a lying junkie Sixx and Vince I'll eat the whole buffet Neil.
I could sit around the camp fire and listen to Don Dokken stories all night.
It was Vince and Mick that stood out. Mick was perfect for Moltey Crue. Mick playing Danger and Too young or Starry Eyes or Too fast or On with the show.
the Motley Crue name-change story is only partly true. It had been the original name of Whitehorse, Mick's band before Vendetta, and I don't doubt he may have reused it again at one point, but the formation of THE motley crue happened when he was already jamming with Vince, Nikki, and Tommy. They were not an evolution of Vendetta.
Was never a Crue fan but I appreciate Mick the more I find out about him, he paid his dues and for his band to do this is wrong.
DON IS GREAT!! MICK TO! THIS GUYS ARE THE BEST FROM THEIR GROUPS!!
Good interview but Rocka Rolla doesn’t suck.
Agree, possibly the most underrated guitar player ever
Ha! I fucking love Don. Great interview. Poor Mick, though. Such a good dude. He deserved better from his bandmates. Love you, Mick!
Still has a landline! If I could sit down and have a beer with a rockstar, it would be Don Dokken.
I have had a bad back for 3+ years. As a pacu RN it pains me continuously. I can't imagine what Mick injured to help drive that band to success. God bless him.
Endured
Don & Mick Album Best Comeback EVERRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR
Mick is one of the most underrated guitarists, period!!! Love his new solo album!!!! It's one of the greatest albums of the decade!!!!!
Stand up for other Guitarists, but blast the one that help made you millions... wow
Mick Mars made those songs for Motley - Hell, he named them!
loe don. sad seeing these guys fade musically and due to poor health. but great spirit don.
Much respect for DD
My fave Priest album is Rocka Rolla
Don's a great guy ❤
You are right about that very underrated, especially when it comes to his rythem guitars, and all those fucking badd ass riffs,he produced,
Love Dokkens solo album in the early 90s. When it came out I was sad to here the group broke up,but at the same time I was happy Don made it on his own. Lynch had a great group to ,don't know why he didn't go far. I do agree with Don though, Nick is underrated. I also see a lot of people agree that Mick got a raw deal from the breakup. Mick put a lot of time and effort into the group's rise to fame, his fellow band mates should have stuck up for him.
Yes he is great guitar player
Wow, just to hate and dislike Dokken, but quite good interview, and honest guy, Mick Mars rules!
Would be very nice to see Mick work with Don a little bit..
Greg Leon is not a fan of Nikki Sixx and just did an interview exposing that Sixx may not have been around during Theater of Pain recording sessions....
Mick does not get the credit he deserves, and the band was always trying to replace him for some reason but Dr. Feelgood and the eponymous album are mostly Mars written riffs.
But Corabi did record a lot of the guitar on the eponymous album and then the follow up reunion with Vince
Mick Mars riff master
He's not underrated if your mother crue fan. He's the one who wrote all the guitar parts.
I am a mother crue fan
Don seems like a well to do and cool dude , Rock god of the 80"s as well !
has any musicians come.forward to support the Crue version of reality? seems like everyone speaking up is on team mick .. as it should be
I have ankeloseing spondylitis I'm 45 now diagnosed by accident when I was 25 I'm on all sort of Dr's drugs to keep it under control some days worst than others hopefully I last as long as Mick mars.
Mick was, for me, the biggest part of why the Crue sounded so good. His guitar was hugely important to their overall sound. Without Mick, I don't really care. It's not the Crue w/o Mick.
I HATE Sixx, Neil & Lee. Despise them. MC were playing 1000 seaters with no audiences before KISS took them out in 2014 in front of big crowds again. Restored their careers for retirement. How does Nikki thank Gene? Publicly talks badly about him. How does Nikki thank the sound of MC, Mick Mars? Kicks him out & publicly talks badly about him, all to get his buddy John 5 in the band. Notice a trend? All power to Mick Mars, the best of the best. Glad you won in court, Mick. Loving these interviews with Don.
Wow what a cool thing to stick up for your buddy and let the world know how much he meant to you.
The lure of more money, makes some people that were once brothers treat each other like dirt… the way they did Mick Mars it’s terrible I would’ve never thought they would’ve done that to Mic… I’m not gonna pay to go see him anymore that’s for sure
Tonght from Theater of Pain is one the best Crue riffs ever. So heavy
I consider Mick to be a lot like Keith Richards in that, he’s not a freakish technical player……But he has that rare gift of consistently creating the most amazing riffs. You can call me ‘wrong’ all you want, but that’s how I feel.
With that said, my opinion of the rest of Motley came crashing down after I read The Heroin Diaries. What I took from it was just how conceited that Nikki sounded. After that, the more I saw/heard/read about Motley, the worse my opinion of them became. I haven’t listened to a single Motley song in a LONG time….l’m gonna guess at least 10 years. To this day, I can no longer stand the sound of Vince’s voice.
This interview explains Stick to your Guns/ Looks that Kill
Don Dokken, such a great guy
Most underrated down stroke player. Simple catchy riffs. Amazing solo on home sweet home. Nikki wrote the tunes but without mick there would be no hooks. Love his style.
Nikki might of had a small .. idea . But it certainly wasn't what Mick was playing on the albums . Nikki didn't have the sense of rhythm at the time , to play the riffs like Mick was playing . If Mick had to greatly modify any idea Nikki showed him , than it wasn't really Nikki writing the tunes .
Nikki has said he doesn't know much about chords, etc so the assumption must be that Mick brought all the flavor and musical color thu his use of inverted chords, heavy chug riffing, tasty solos, etc. Having a hard pounding drummer in Lee..... essentially, the sound of Motley.
HUGE misconception about Nancy Suxx: He was practically the sole LYRIC writer. There is almost always 1 most of the time 2 (Lee and Mars) who are given credit for writing the music
@@Reverendldthe first two albums (TFFL and SATD) have Sixx listed as sole writer (lyrics and music) for the most part. (IMO, i believe Sixx has always taken way more songwriting credit than deserved and Mars (and producers, etc) given much less credit than deserved. Sixx may have brought the bare bones of the song, but they would likely never be what they became, fully fleshed songs, guitar hooks, etc by the time they were pressed to vinyl, without much help from others. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M%C3%B6tley_Cr%C3%BCe_discography
There’s a reason Sixx got Mars’ portrait tattooed on his thigh. He owes everything to that man. Yet here he is, sticking it to him in the end. Really living up to his ungrateful ***hole reputation.
